Interview with authors of The Eighth Wonder of the World: The True Story of Andre the Giant
#wrestling #oldschool #80s
It has been 31 years since the passing of legendary wrestler Andre the Giant (May 19, 1946 - January 28, 1993).
In July 2022 I was fortunate enough to conduct an interview with renowned Canadian authors Pat Laprade and Bertrand Hebert to discuss their tremendous biography of Andre the Giant which had been released in 2020.
Bertrand and Pat have penned multiple wrestling works together documenting such things as the Montreal wrestling scene and the life of Mad Dag Vachon, as well as individual works on the history of Women's professional wrestling and the biography of Pat Patterson, but this may be their greatest project yet.
Bertrand and Pat went through painstaking detail to make sure they accurately documented historical facts and figures, dispel some of the many myths around Andre the Giant (some even created himself!) and most important of all, show the human side of Andre Roussimoff.
Go out of your way to find a copy of this book and hopefully you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!

What If MAGNUM TA's Accident Never Happened?
Strange that the AWA tag team title says American Wrestling Alliance instead of Association.
Born in 76 the 80s was the best years to me
Not a fan of the UWF HW title but boy the Mid-South one was horrid so it was an upgrade. I love the NWA TV one, and to me, it had higher prestige than the U.S. one since it had the stipulation of a time limit and was, of course, defended on TV quite often. I never noticed the Mid-Atlantic has Georgia on it...they must have added that around 1984 Also these world belts love Australia but ehhh, Japan, who? That is weird especially since more wrestlers went to Japan for tours than Australia lol
Johnny B Badd, YIP...ludicrous look but what a perfect opening match character. The entrance and the wrestling skill was perfect to get the crowd lifted. lol, Mr. All that and a bag of chips! Love it, his vignettes were great BTW, in case you two did not know, the song of old MACW show is called Manilla Skies by Seymour Milton. I use that as my warmup song for my workout, such an awesome tune. I love old time funk with that bass, add in some horns and I am sold
My favorite era! Sweet that your wife loves Andre bc of her Grandpa. Wonder if she watched Grand Prix in Quebec or Atlantic Grand Prix, the latter was a long standing touring company in the Maritimes run by Emil Dupree and had one of the few midget ladies divisions. Don Muraco was my favorite heel of all time, hopefully you guys watched those Fuji/Muraco skits and Friday Night Tights appearances.
Fun video, me personally i would have used the later version of mid Atlantic title which i think looks a lot better than the earlier version that you used and i was surprised that you didn’t include certain belts like the USWA unified world championship , NWA junior championship , the American championship and the NWA national title , but like I said earlier this was still a fun video
According to Magnum he did not smarten up his mother to that table fight or attack would occur.
With great respect for Magnum and Dusty, the sight of them wearing fur coats was utterly WTF. Fur coats were meant for woman wear.
The 2nd version Stan Lane with the Educated feet, Bobby Eaton with the Alabama Jam. They were never boring, after they split a piece of WCW was missing.
Magnum could carry all the deadweights in a match from Dusty Rhodes to Bill Mulkey and made them look like they was great😂
Never really got to see Dennis but it could have been a broom as long as you got Beautiful B
DEAD MAN WALKING
Hulk hogan of course
On my Mt Rushmore Happy birthday AA
Absolute legend! My go to for old school matches and promos when I’m in the mood to see some great wrestling 👍
@@WrestlingWithThe80s same here
Well I'll tell you what I know I am a big fan of magnums Ric flair himself Magnum hadn't had his accident Ric flair wouldn't have been a 16 time world champion I think that says it all
I Liked Magnum TA. He Seemed Like Your Friendly, Okay Wrestler. I Had No Idea His Career Would Be Cut Short, By A Devastating Car Accident. Hope To Hear More About Him, & Hope He's Still Alive😊.
Their rivalry with the Rock n roll express (Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson) was like the college football rivalries like Auburn Alabama The Iron Bowl or Georgia Florida The world's largest outdoor cocktail party in Jacksonville Florida
@@Julian-yc4hn great comparison!
Always found it interesting how alot of the 80s guys got their ring names from tv and movies. At the time i didnt like that but now i couldnt imagine it being different.
This is who Rick Rude was inspired by!
WWE needs to have a tv championship 💯
One of the most charismatic most popular rising Superheroes Superstar
Absolutely!
McMahon considered any wrestling history that wasn’t his as not wrestling history, which is sad but hopefully hhh realizes the error of this
Agree, would be nice to see old footage and title lineages.
Smooth transitioning Spime Buster Arn the best at it
Absolutely!
Jesse Ventura seconds later, “what a move there by Arn Anderson, beautiful” Still in my eyes this one was the best spinebuster ever. It was executed and sold perfectly with great height. Should have gotten the 3 count to be honest
He hit it so beautifully all the time. This one and the one to Taker at WM18 always stand out in my mind. His DDT was a thing of beauty as well.
@@WrestlingWithThe80s Yes I remember watching it live and it was the buzz of the night for me. If Naitch had gotten the win for that breaking the streak I would have accepted it. JR also made it better “it’s Arn Anderson with a spine buster where the hell did he come from”
Now thats how you do a spinebuster
@@TedsTakesWrestling it’s an absolute work of art! So was his DDT.
@@WrestlingWithThe80s 💯💯💯
86-88 were my favorite years. 89 wcw started getting weard
They were at their peak in those years. It was Muta and Flair that kept me interested in ‘89.
I’m very grateful to Eric Bischoff for having the idea for the NWA/WCW World TV Championship
And regarding how short his career was, Mr. Terry Allen still accomplished a lot...
Indeed he did 👍
NWA was definitely was going to hang the world title on Magnum T.A. The perfect Babyface. Magnum would've held the title longer than Ronnie Garvin. Magnum T.A's trajectory would've been legendary
Flair started his reigns in 1981, while Hogan didn't begin his reigns until 1984. Hogan did have the single longest run during his first title reign. More than double Flair's longest reign.
BEST BELT...EVER!! ON RED LEATHER AS PRESENTED TO OLE DUSTY....THE BEST VERSION..EVER
I stopped watching wrestling for a time. A friend got me to give it another watch. As soon as the Rock was on screen, I thought “that’s my guy, he has a special charisma”. My initial introduction to wrestling, and it was Magnum TA who made me feel that. Would have been an all time great. Microphone work was great. In-ring work was even better
Love this 👍
Brett!! Edit: Dam I didn’t know the answer was at the end already 😂😂😂😂
🤣🤣 I appreciate the enthusiasm!
Everyone talks about Mankind and The Undertaker in the Hell in a Cell true fans remember Magnum T.A vs Tully Blanchard in the cage on a "I Quit" match, that was the true first ever Hell in a Cell
It was so good! Will be doing a video on it very soon 👍
@WrestlingWithThe80s truly I can't wait, and Thank you
@@heeljoe7221 thank you for the support!
You showed Terry and Tully both wearing belts, standing next to each other as if they were Tag Team Champs and it made me think about the Andersons and I enjoyed the Andersons better than the Road Warriors. The R.W. were awesome when you first saw them but if you loved 'Wrestling' the Road Warriors were boring but try to imagine Tully + Magnum as a TagcTeam - if anyone could imagine Tully turning babyface. But with Magnum's Intensity and Tully's toughness they'd be so much fun to watch as a team. Oh well, stuff to dream about.
Never thought of that but yeah they would have been great together!
When Nikita koloff won the belt that's when they premiered it with the black strap
As great as Magnum T. A. was; I personally feel that the late David Von Erich would’ve made a more credible world champion than M.T.A. My opinion of course.
SOLIE IS GOD
Yes he would have a great world heavyweight champion
Magnum TA is a top tier Hall of Famer. As good as anyone who ever wrestled.
David should have been checked out by a doctor . Kevin talked him into going to see a doctor about the pain and getting sick at his stomach .The doctor was going to check David out , but he freaked out and said he would tear the place apart if he didn't get out of the stirrups .Its a shame he didn't get checked out (He had an intestinal Infection .David's intestines ruptured and poison leaked out and killed him unfortunately .There are a lot of what ifs (Well what if he would have taken care of himself (Maybe he would still be alive today .What a sad day Feb.10 1984 was for his family ,friends ,fans 😢
He is dead and end of story
I would have loved to see Magnum TA turn heel on Dusty Rhodes in 87 and take Ole Andersons place in the 4 horsemen
