    They're "close" as all preamps should be, the Lang is a tad "softer" and the API a tad more "direct". I'm still amazed by the API sound, there's that forwardness, it's almost like the source is kissing a compressor with slow attack / fast release and a 1K EQ boost. Curious to hear your personal opinion on it and If you have had the time to try the Lang on dynamic mics or mics with different impedance. As always thank you for the video!

    • @MillSounds
      @MillSounds วันที่ผ่านมา

      The new API stuff always has a tendency to add some focus and create some punch in the low mids. You can also tell how the API's are slightly more compressed in the high end when you listen to the shaker and tambourine. The Langs seem to be more vintage style API voiced, slightly bigger low end that's definitely thicker on some things, but also slightly more open on the top than the API's in some situations. They're both in the same ballpark for sure, it's splitting hairs on some things!

  • @SimonChampagne
    @SimonChampagne 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Great review! Lang has a little bump in the low-mids (mud?) and a little less presence... Otherwise seems to react in a very similar way but I preferred the API all around.

    • @MillSounds
      @MillSounds 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hard to say, there's things I liked about both. You loose some of the lo end character than thickness that the Lang OpAmps have when you switch in the API 2520's. On the other hand, there's a nicer clarity and punch in the 2520's, and the high end seems slightly more compressed and sweeter with the API OpAmp.

    The API sounds a bit stiff but more clear and forward. The HA sounds very "saucey" like its swimming in 30% more reverb, with a hump from ~120-300 Hz that pushes the upper mids back. The air got sweet; sort of like how a Kush Clariphonic is kind of (almost) overly-sweet.

    Great song! There's something in your singing, melody choices and vocal production that reminds me of "Morning Phase"-era Beck. And that is most definitely a compliment! Although I do prefer the Gefells, which I find have a beautiful "contained" sound, I'm still very intrigued by the ADKs. A pair of ADKs would be a bit north of 2200 USD after VAT and shipping to Sweden though. About the same as what a pair of Chandler TG type l cost here. Though I'm not hearing them side by side here, my take aways from both the ADKs and Type Ls from listening to demos is that they both have a full bodied sound with highs that aren't hyped or brittle. Maybe the Chandler has more of a bite and "vibe" though. And the versatility of the two different voicings. The ADKs have flexibility when it comes to polar patterns though... You have experience with both. Which would be your choice for general purpose stereo pair? How similar / dissimilar are they to you? Best, /Max

      I specifically listened to the song "Morning Phase" off that album a few times for ideas/inspiration when I was doing parts. Excellent video! First, you're right, those Gefells sound lovely, but those ADKs are a real surprise - I've often been interested or even tempted by their offerings, but the sheer amount of seemingly ever-changing models and confusing naming/numbering schemes always put me off, along with the fact that (being a US based brand) the final cost, after shipping, transport & import duties & taxes, would end up being more than I might pay for similar inspired by/clone mics here in Europe. But... might be time to give them a second look! Second, your story regarding those Gefells is truly something special, and heartfelt. Third, your song is really nice! Sounds like there's a very personal story behind that one, too, not just some demo mumbo-jumbo. Fourth and perhaps most importantly, I always enjoy your videos - you're one of the VERY few audio TH-camrs that exudes a quadfecta of calm, competence, kindness and curiosity. And that's a pretty rare thing, these days. Keep up the great work! Cheers, AF

    • @MillSounds
      @MillSounds 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Just a different design compared to the Gefells. The UM70’s are pretty warm sounding on top, but have a bit of a boost around the 7k area. You can hear that especially clear on the tambourine, the ADK sounds a bit more extended at the very top but the Gefell is a little more focused. I think that’s the best thing about the Gefells, they tend to bring out clarity in a lot of sources without getting overly bright. The ADKs sound a little more flat and extended.

    Pretty sure your Gefells are mylar capsules, they use mylar since the 90s as for some time back then Thiersch was skinning the Gefell capsules and he had stopped doing pvc for quite a while and only started to offer pvc reskinning a few years ago because the demand was so high. But he claims that there's no measurable difference between mylar and pvc, only that the pvc capsule have a shorter lifespan. I have 6 UM-70 and all are mylar. Modern Gefells are mylar too

    • @MillSounds
      @MillSounds 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'll preface all of this by "I'm not 100% sure" 😆, I've asked a few knowledgeable people about this over the years and gotten mixed information. I've talked directly to Gefell about this (a few years ago) and was told by one of their techs that the M7 mics made in the 90's were still using the original PVC formula up until around the year 2000. The capsules were changed after they changed ownership around then (I think the Neumann family bought them back then?), but they still have some NOS one that they use to repair older models and put in some limited edition M7 mics. I've heard Klaus and Fletcher from Mercenary confirm this on forums. That's what I "think" is the case, but I fully admit it's a mixed bag from a bunch of somewhat "cocky" people at times... I completely agree that the lifespan is a huge issue, it's one of the reasons I've avoided spending the kind of money these older UM-70's are starting to demand. This pair is different, they're sentimental and if they "go" some day, I'll do my best to invest in a good capsule replacement option. Thankfully, having two of them here has been easy to troubleshoot and confirm they're both still in good shape! The ADK's did so well. If I wouldn't have just gotten these UM-70's, I would have a pair of the Munich 7's here...

      @MillSounds 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Both the ADKs and Gefells have a bit of a compressed nature right out of the box, one of the many beautiful things about M7's. ADK did a great job on the Munich 7's, that "thing" is definitely there in them as well.

    • @MillSounds
      @MillSounds 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The V13 and V4 are pretty similar in a lot of ways, so a V4 is going to be your best bet if you're really attached to the V13 sound. If you want a SUPER portable option, look for a used first generation V4 as they're super small (I've got two of them). Other than that, the Chandler is a really small mic, the little shockmount fits inside the box with the mic, and you've got two voicings. Hard to beat that for portability.

      @@buzzcutzaudio It’s incredibly frustrating, as I had a bunch of really cool ideas for some 360 video mixed in ambisonics. I went back and forth almost daily with TH-cam for over a month trying to get my video to work, I got the impression that they didn’t know how to fix it or what was causing the problem. They finally got tired of dealing with me and randomly closed the ticket one day. About two weeks ago, the video randomly started to work on most devices and browsers (Soyuz 013A 360 Ambisonic Recording, featuring "Sylamore Special" th-cam.com/video/ZcK7GSoH5Sc/w-d-xo.html). Give it a play on your system and let me know if it works…

      @@MillSounds That video doesn't work either. I checked it on Chrome, Safari, iphone YT app with airpod pros and wired headphones. No ambisonics. I checked my videos again and now none of them are working - when they did not long ago. I noticed when I play your video on Chrome vs Safari they sound different. It sounds like Chrome is pulling the ambisonic track but it's not rendering it. While Safari seems to revert to the static binaural mix. I recorded the difference if you want me to send that to you. I hope they fix this or Alejandro @ Audiobrewers can code a player.

    Could you tell me please, what song is playing in the video? Spotify can't find it

    I felt like I had to turn up the universal audio one to hear the vocals, but it was just there was so much more fullness to the API. Universal audio felt hollow in comparison. Great song, voice and playing dude too!!

    I think the api sounds the best, mpdi is not as polished and nice, the coils are sounding like mush to me despite my love for tube pres! thanks!

    professional producer/ engineer here. Im monitoring on some very good speakers. the difference in the dimension is huge. you cant hear it but you can feel it in the higher bands. did here some distortion on the hardware at times. plugin doesn't deliver the same energy as hardware. my honest opinion. great video!!!!

    Would love to listen to a comparison between this and the Pulsar Sidecar, just the compressor and maybe the ADDA section to hear how far we've come in terms of authentic color and vibe emulation.
