Multiclassing in DC20 from a 5e perspective
12:10 You made another box for saving throws. In the DC20 stat blocks, they just put saves in () after the attribute. Just a suggestion
Thats a good idea! When I first made the blank forms I copied the only thing I had at the time which was the 5e sheet. You are right. Time to get a little further from the 5e one.
A stream for group DC 20 campaign prep would be something I'd enjoy, myself.
I can do a session prep video. I do have older ones where I talk about my prep converting the Pathfinder 2e beginners box.
Are you familiar with Mortal's Playground? A lengthy list of D&D-ish monsters which have already been converted. Seems done well, but I'm somewhat allergic to calculators 😅 How feasible would it be to take that extensive list of stat blocks and apply them to whatever monsters one might want? Perhaps not an option if you're on the task of strictly converting modules.... ?
I think its fine if you need a monster in a hurry to use anything thats available. Mortal did a good job and has been helpful to the community. I did look at some of his. Ultimately, I really enjoy converting stuff, so I have mostly created my own. I am almost done with a Novice Level Halloween one shot that uses Coaches monster stats exclusively. That will be the first time besides the Hunted that I run something without homebrew monsters.
Vampire Spawn, Darkvision could be 12 squares.
Thank you for your comment. In a one to one conversion, 12 spaces equals 60 feet, but DC20 gives out Darkvision in increments of 10 spaces. I should have mentioned that when I chose 10 spaces instead of converting the 60 feet directly.
I would have made the Grapple on the Claw attack an attack enhancement instead. Otherwise not bad! It definitely encouraged me to try something like this myself, next time I'm wishing for a creature. I really want a quicker way to make humanoid NPCs like certain bandits etc, but I guess I'll make do with stuff there is for now haha
Thank you for your comment. The attack enhancement was a good suggestion. For quickly making humanoids, I would edit the ones Dungeon Coach has made.
@@RollWithUsDMs you're probably right, they're a quicker way to get there isn't it. I just started to make some goblins, now I'm thinking maybe I should copy the ones from the hunted oneshot
I have made my own stock goblins, but there are some in the 3rd DC20 Magazine. That will be on sale soon if you are not a patron of Dungeon Coach.
🙂👍🏻
25:46 - I'm trying to overcome this concept myself because I want to DM more someday but for the time being I'm content to be a player. Never mind how things will go once my daughter is born next year.
22:48 - Wasn't where? Where we were? Or where we were trying to get to?
You’re going to have to ask Ali for clarification in discord
@@RollWithUsDMs Thanks. Just did. 🙂

At the pass. You guys were told that the new leader had thrown out all the “half breeds” which is what the granddaughter is.
12:49 - And that was my thought process with Dehku. I was sacrificing myself to keep Achu alive. 🙂
It was very emotional
@@RollWithUsDMs Oh, absolutely. He never even got to say goodbye to his girlfriend, Crysta. And that was *after* already dying once before.
And Starlit gave up his only possession to save his brother.
I love your purple hair Ali 💜💜💜
Thank you!
Awesome. 🙂👍🏻
Thank you Petr!
🙂👍🏻
Thank you for your comment!
I find the Success+5 system exciting. I love how high rolls on the d20 feel better. If an 8 on the die would be a success, it is nice that an 18 on the die is a success with benefits, instead of just being the same as the 8. Rolling high is almost always a nice bonus that feels good. And with help from other players, it gets really fun.
Thank you so much for your comment Steve! We definitely appreciate you as one of our Patrons and it makes me appreciate your view here on TH-cam even more since you could have watched the video without helping us get the view here! And it was your group that got that 45 or so that I mentioned in the video! Again, thank you so very much for your support!
Has anyone found DC20 advantage harder to keep track of?
Thank you for your question. I think that because its not a static “you have advantage or you dont” that it can take some getting used to. Thats also tied to keywords like Exposed and Hindered which also take time to learn what they mean. Now, at this point, I can quickly say, “Advantage because hes exposed, advantage because concealable weapon, and advantage because of an extra AP spent for it. Triple Advantage. It does take a little time to calculate all of the advantage, but I find it as exciting as calculating damage after a hit. Picking up all of those D20s is very satisfying. Thanks again, and keep rolling with us!
37:34 you can also spend 1 MP to regain 1 SP, but, again, not really worth it.
Yeah, I agree. 1 MP > 1 SP. Im also not sure 2 AP is worth 1 SP.
@@RollWithUsDMs I have had chats with Jotto, one of the devs, on discord. He says that 1 SP is generally meant to be worth 2 AP, in terms of what it can do. At least that’s how they try to balance it
When used on a technique or an SP ability that sounds about right. I guess I have mostly seen people spend SP on maneuvers which makes SP feel like less flexible AP. However when you use it on something that requires SP, then it feels like quasi MP.
I know for the Spellblade that I play, I always try to keep one SP for Heroic Parry, so I can see the value of SP.
Debilitating Strike does give the equivalent of hamstring and exposed that last longer
Thank you for engaging in the comment section. I will make sure Ali knows that. The one advantage of the maneuver vs debilitating strike is that the maneuver doesnt require stamina and debilitating strike does. Overall though, I agree that Debilitating Strike is better.
Punch your allies into bloodied and then heal them
Thats one way to do it
This could be a whole series. DC20 does ________ better than D&D! Good video!
Thank you! I was thinking about that. Next I was thinking about “DC20 does degrees of success better than Pathfinder 2e”
🙂👍🏻
Thanks Petr
Big thumbs up!
Thank you for engaging with the comments section! We appreciate the support!
The fact that they just cancel out in 5E regardless of how many you have always seemed odd to me. Thanks for putting this out there.
Thank you for the comment! Whenever I play 5e anymore I wish it worked like DC20. But then I wish I were playing DC20 as well.

Wrestling software and art terrifies me Funnel sounds like great fun
I am really excited to run the Funnel. I think DC20 will handle the Novice Level play very well
Thanks for the DM help. Needed in this New TTRPG.
Thank you for your reply. Are there any topics you would like me to cover in a future video?
@@RollWithUsDMs Thanks, would love to hear more about running monsters. I have been thru a couple games and ran a mix of creatures. I was having problems with organizing myself durning Combat. Ive also been trying to get more out of my monsters with reactions and abilities.
I have only run on VTT (Roll20). I use one of the bars for hp, one of the bars for AP. If the monster has legendary AP I use a third bar. I have homebrewed all of my monsters. I try to give them unique abilities either based on Pathfinder 2e abilities like sudden charge or other things that I have seen with other monster stat blocks (like action point enhancements for grapple, power attack, etc). I made an Ochre Jelly. I gave it 16 hp, immunity to lightning and slashing. I gave it a reaction to split if it is hit with slashing or lightning and it has at least 4 hp. I basically modeled it after the 5e Ochre Jelly. I put a DC20 flair on it where when it splits, not only does it get smaller, but the two new jellies have 1 less AP each. So anyway, I look to 5e mostly for inspiration. Sometimes Pathfinder. And I look for ways to add a bit of DC20 flair to my monsters.
I am dealing with a family emergency right now, but when I am able to make videos again, I will put something together elaborating on this. Most likely with examples.
The last item, “Sparkshot” has the following clause in the Critical Failure line: The formula is ruined. Let me explain to clear this up. It should probably read “the batch is ruined” as they have expended the herbs and failed to create anything. They will not lose their ability to craft the item in the future. Thank you kylegraham7380 for pointing this out. I wanted to make sure this info was pinned for everyone.
Can you explain the "formula is ruined" drawback? What prevents the character(s) from simply making a copy of the formula?
Poor word choice I suppose. A clearer way to phrase it would have been “the batch is ruined.” I never intended for them to lose the ability to make it again. Just that they expended the herbs and did not create anything.
Seems mathematically sound (as far as I can tell) When I get around to DMing herbalism I am going to want it to depend a lot of the settings and the biomes within and a character's familiarity with that.
I can definitely see that. For the campaign I made it for they are in Phandalin in the Sword Coast, so its pretty standard. In a broader campaign setting I could definitely see expanding the parameters. Thank you for your comment
It's great to see the community already homebrewing for DC20!
I love it! Homebrewing DC20 is so intuitive. I just finished making an Arcane Archer subclass for my Spellblade player. Captures the feel of the 5e one and fixes many of its shortcomings. Ill be doing more of these videos
Great to see the community embrace a game this early. Love the creativity.
Awe, thanks! I love this game so much. It has revitalized my love of ttrpgs in a way that I couldnt have imagined back in March when I downloaded the Alpha 0.6
Good work! Love seeing more input from the community. :)
Thank you! I have more subclasses that I can do a video on as well as homebrewed spells. I have been converting 5e spells as needed.
Love to see some more DC20 homebrew. The game feels so complete it's easy to forget that the game is in Beta.
I feel the same way. Even in Beta it feels like a step above its competition. I have been homebrewing spell conversions from 5e and I have more subclasses I can do a video on. Look for those in the near future!
Thanks for putting this out there for the community.
I appreciate your comment! I am always trying to help people get into DC20! I may clip out the flanking part too. A lot of people get the flanking rules wrong.
🙂👍🏻
Thank you Petr!
What I like to do for setting up the skill challenge is, instead going around the table one by one, I ask the players to have a group discussion on what they want to do. This lets them figure out the scenario in what they want to attempt and then choose the dice rolls that fit. This really helps with the teamwork aspect that DC20 completely encourages. Admittedly, is really for a group that is comfortable with each other. If they are kind of new or the group discussion doesn’t happen I’ll go back to asking the players individually
Thank you for your comment and good point. Working as a group would lead to more teamwork. I guess I have run The Hunted for so many new people that usually get “headlights in the deers eyes” when I ask them to tell me what they as a group want to do. They just freeze. The other thing that happens often is that people think about how much damage their attacks will do, or how many action points they spend. It is foreign for people to think outside of damage and resources when they first play through a skill challenge.
Glad you did an insight into this mechanic. I'm hoping we get some more official rules for it in the future
Thank you for your comment! I love skill challenges. They are a great way to handle areas of the game in a cinematic way.
Awesome. 🙂👍🏻
I wonder what you think about the idea of classless characters in DC20
I have not really given it too much thought, but the first thing that comes to mind is that you could probably build a custom class (or no set class) by having the player pick 2 level one features from any class. At level 2, pick 2 more features, up to level 2, from any class, and spend your talent. You get the flavor feature of any class you have two features from. I think this could work, but I would need to test it. DC20 is very modular though, which is great!
I think some part of why I love this game so much is how open it is to the homebrewing. Because the levels and subclasses aren't defined so much, it can be adapted to apply to one's own campaigns and be "Player Centered". It isn't so interesting to me what subclasses others choose as how a DM and player are free to apply discretion and go ahead to fit future advancement to the PC according to the campaign and that PC.
Thank you for your well thought out comment! As a DM I have appreciated how close to 5e the game is (while fixing every problem that I can think with that system). That allowed me to jump in and run DC20 very easily. It also made creating monsters pretty easy. The by 5 system is really cool to homebrew around too. Would you like to see my homebrew system for crafting with Herbalism? My players really wanted to do that so I made it for them. I am the type of DM who tries to find a way for the players to do the cool thing. So anyway, my absolute favorite thing is probably the way that DC20 allows for big epic moments when players (and me) pour a lot into the thing they are doing. It allows for amazing storytelling in and out of combat!
Wow. Awesome. 🙂👍🏻
Thank you Petr! Appreciate you as always!
I have added a clause to the Wildfire Spirit that it is manifest until the druid finishes a long rest. That feels fair and more balanced. I changed the wording on the Hunter Ranger’s cooking ability to say: Critical Success = +2 portions created (this was suggested by a viewer.
liking the wildfire druid, was always my fav subclass for them, loved running around with my little fire otter
Thank you for your comment! Wildfire was the last one I made and one of the most complex, but hopefully it turned out epic! I am also glad that I removed the clause of it only lasting for an hour. He should be able to keep his pet around. Although, maybe for balance he needs to pay the mana once per day to sustain it…hmmm. Thoughts?
Also, how about trying to preserve the skin and use the other organs?
I could see that with a survival check. My players have already thought outside the box and I created an entire system for them to use herbalism to make tinctures and the like.
Would love to see these subclasses available for download. My PC's are at level 5 and I've basically just 'converted' the 5e subclasses and several spells.
Are you a part of the Dungeon Coaches Discord? If you are, ping me at Gary @ Roll With Us DMs and Ill shoot you a PM with the breakdown.
Nice work! I just extended the amount of sessions my players got to be level 1 and 2 so I could wait for Coach to release subclasses, but it's taking a while
Thank you for your comment! I am running Lost Mines of Phandelver and I knew I wanted to give the full Lost Mines experience as well as the full up to level 5 DC20 experience. I also love homebrewing stuff 😁
I think you should change the text for the critical success on the ranger cooking skill for it cook for 2 extra people, this way it can accommodate better with the total result of the roll as well
I like that. It is a cleaner wording and is exactly what I was going for. Thank you! 😊
🙂👍🏻
Hi Petr. I am thinking about doing a video on best bets for spell casters. Would you like to see that?
@@RollWithUsDMs Sure. I am looking forward to watching it. 👍🏻
I agree that there are things about GMing it... even the liveplays demonstrating it don't really coach GMs in what they should be doing to make it effective or prepare for it, something missing I think, even if it is perhaps a subtle element. Otherwise analysis is technical, or tending to immediately venture into homebrewing or adapting it to fit what some GMs already wanted to do before even learning DC20 rules
Thank you for your detailed comment. You are correct that capturing what a GM does is not the easiest to encapsulate. I think I will go over the issues that I have seen players have and how to coach your players through learning to overcome things like analysis paralysis and thinking outside the box on skill challenges on the next GM Toolkit video. Anything else you would like to see?
@@RollWithUsDMs How about the summoning of a new work schedule which allows me to join online campaigns? ... I think maybe something about managing the downside of, or adapting one's GMing to, unlimited creativity of the sort being encouraged in things like skill checks where less justifiable sorts of skills are used for the players to pain pictures of how things resolve which may be so bad to break immersion for some. Or maybe I'm worrying too much? Or maybe it's this head cold I have...
StartPlaying.Games has allowed me to justify gaming more since it is contributing to the household. I love that Skill Challenges let players get creative. And you are right that guiding players through a skill challenge and making sense of what they want to do while figuring out which check they should roll is a complex topic. Maybe I can get a few players on a livestream and run them through a few skill challenges to demonstrate how to run them. If not a livestream, I think some extra tips would be helpful. Thank you again! I hope you feel better.
👍
