I have always considered myself a bit of a creator, whether it be woodworking in my past life, or a photographer and live video producer in my current business - I have always found myself wanting to create, and I love getting my hands dirty.
I love trying new things and recently purchased a diode laser and 3D printer to feed the creative fire burning inside me, and I have to say, I'm loving it. I want this channel to be an exploration of crafty type hobbies, most things I'm willing to have a go at, and most importantly be willing to learn along the way. I consider myself a "Jack of all trades, master of none" and I'm OK with that. If I can help you move forward with your hobby of craft pursuit, then it's a win/win. Be createful! (that's creative and grateful :))

Excellent tips; thank you.
When you say that you have adjusted the white point to 180. Where is that done, in light burn or photoshop.
that would be photoshop as a levels adjustment layer
Great video, thank you for your insight.
you are most welcome - thank you for tuning in :)
Thanks. I learned some very useful info.
Excellent Bob - glad you found it helpful
I may have missed it, but you are cutting each individual piece by itself?
Yes - that is correct - only in the instance where you might want the tighter fit - however depending on the size of the puzzle would determine if it is a viable alternative - in most cases i expect that it wouldn't 😀
Which laser are you using and what is your power ? I have watched 4 of your videos and you keep saying 25% power, 17% power, but of what power ?
10w Lindsey
Looking forward to watching this after all the great comments. New sub also. 😊
Thank you - I appreciate your support
Light burn will not let me save anything like this to it. Says I am not authorized. Even though I paid for program.
You can email me a screenshot and I can see if I can help you out - mrcraftsmith@gmail.com
I got my numbers csv file over. Everything is set up the way you show. When i hit the test it does not show the numbers.@mrcraftsmith
Hello please send me a copy of this box file
Hi Lloyd - sorry for the delay - here is the file for you to have a play with tinyurl.com/mrcraftsmithbox
Thanks I was thinking along the same lines as you sir. Let's use recycled cardboard. Perfect shape for mailing out slate coasters.
Thanks for tuning in Lloyd - yes coasters was my intended test case for this one :)
LOVE YOUR VIDEO and you style of teaching, easy to follw... my questions is i created my first vertial line and used the grid as you instructed, my first line is on the 10 / 10 mark perfect but when i go to creat the other 38 lines they slightly begin to shift right by the time i hit the 39th line, its off by 30%.. what did i do wrong?
firstly - thank you for your support - apologies for the delay - I'm more than happy to see if i can work out what is going on - perhaps you could do a screen capture showing me the settings and I'm sure I can nut it out - mrcraftsmith@gmail.com
Drh2. Thanks for sharing your design process. I would like to give it a try and would very much appreciate a copy of the Lightburn file.
thanks for tuning in Don - here is the link for the Lightburn Project File tinyurl.com/mrcraftsmithbox - hope you find it helpful
@mrcraftsmith Will you be doing more videos please or have you had to stop altogether please?
Hi there - yes I know it has been too long since my last video - I am working on my schedule to bring out a new series of videos shortly - I will have to admit that my attempt to start this side hustle has been largely unsuccessful due to some limitations I have put on myself - but I haven't given up so - I believe there are good things to come - I appreciate you hanging in there
Hey, very helpful vids. I'm pretty green at this :) This for sharing that knowledge. Can i have a copy of that spreadsheet ? Thx man !
Thanks for your kind words - Here is the link to the spreadsheet - reach out if you have any questions docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xOKHXy0bCvpeaTEiG9E8pXSPUhz7eDGSlfapoRULU0w/edit?usp=sharing
@@mrcraftsmith thx you :)
Tou made tracing so so so much easier. Thank you I have a few of my mom's recipes I want to engrave to keep.
That is awesome - such a great idea to preserve family recipes like that.
Thanks for talking about copyright. We should all respect the rights of the artist to their work.
Absolutely agree :)
Hi Darren, I have an ortur lm3 and there is a sheet about modifying machine parameter. Do I do this in lightburn? Not sure how to do this. Says GBRL for lasergrbl to change value of $131 to 380 and then click write to save. The Y axis travel needs to be 380 not 400. I think maybe that’s why it crashes into the top bar. Hope you can help me please 😬 I’m in Perth and there’s no one here to go to ☹️
Hi Anneliese - shoot me an email with your contact details and we can talk through the issue you are having - mrcraftsmith@gmail.com
Wow 👏 I've seen a ton of videos regarding engraving a photo on a diode and co2 laser not one mentioned the the grayscale dynamic range
Thank you - having a photography background helps with the technical understanding and limitations
great video would it be the same for a 20watt diode
The concept is the same - just do the material test with the 20w to get the optimum power and speed
If the dots are strched, lower the speed
The dot shape is due to the laser beam not speed - I have done tests to confirm and the laser documentation supports the same
@@mrcraftsmith I guess another lense could remedy that, shaped differently
…or even, just tilted
what would offset fill do? that has been a huge time saver for me.
Hi Jeff - yes offset fill has its place dependant on the design being engraved - I have done a video about offset fill as well
Thanks i am new on lightburn , this video give a lot of time saving.
Glad it helped!
Great video as usual. Love how you keep things simple and interesting at the same time.
I appreciate that! Thank you
Waisted 6 coasters today before I could get it right. Wish I’d seen this before. Grr.
The good news is now you know 😀
Can't wait to apply this. Used to be an active Ps and Lr user and you are speaking my language. Subscribed and liked.
Thanks for subscribing and liking, I appreciate it
What you actually did was decreasing the intensity to half in Photoshop. Instead of changing levels in Photoshop you could have lowered max power even further down from 26% to 13% for the same effect. Otherwise, finally a video from someone with a solid analytical approach.
Thanks for the feedback 😀
Identifying the audience and engaging their interest in the process is so important. I had a great gig selling handturned pens to doctors in hospitals until electronic signatures on iPads became the standard on medical records. The pens sold for $50-150 for about an hour's work. Sigh...
What you described is the perfect analogy Bob - understanding your audience is critical
Who cares about copywrite. Burn whatever you want and make as much dough as you can and sell stuff anonymously for cash which is king!
Perfect example of a crap 💩 attitude - well done
Thank you! This is very valuable tip to beginners, like me. So the final craving time went to less than 20%. Need to do timing scales for different sizes for myself and good friend. This saves time a lot!
Glad it was helpful!
You're a diamond, thanks very much for sharing!
Happy to help

Super helpful!! Thank you!!
Thanks :)
Awesome. Thank you!!
I know it's a late reply but thank you :)
This was most informative! Thank you. It made some sense about the dynamic range. How would I get a 0-100 white to black scale that I can try this on my laser? I am sure each laser will have a different range.
this might be the one you are after bit.ly/40xxIBq
This makes a huge difference in time spent in those long engraves! Thank you so much for sharing!
You are welcome :)
Hi, thank you for the instructions. I am thinking of making boxes for my products also. I could try your design, thank you.
sorry for the delay - you might have found the link in other comments, again sorry - thanks for tuning in - here is the link for the Lightburn Project File tinyurl.com/mrcraftsmithbox - hope you find it helpful
Very helpful, thanks
Thanks :)
May be worthwhile for wood.
Wood reacts differently than slate - but yes a similar principle would apply
New here and subbed strait after watching! Great video without all the jargon! Thanks, man; this is a great help.
so sorry for the extra late reply - I'm glad you found it helpful
Great step by step approach. I am about to start up engraving so I was particularly interested in the process of setting up the diode laser, thanks.
Thank you & you're welcome :)
Hi, I am using a 50w co2. What is the recommended setting of power and speed to engrave on plywood. Thank you
Unfortunately I don't have a CO laser so i couldn't really advise - have tou done a material test?
