Did you try FG? I feel this slouchy material is swallowing you up. Also your natural inclination with makeup, hair, and shoes feels way more Gamine to me! Many FGs have shoulders they feel are broader, but they just don't accommodate width

Omg thank you so much for this!! I always get so thrown off trying to find my style essence because most of the examples and assessments a) rely on stereotypes, and b) rarely think about alt styles within this context. I think a lot of people see alt styles as either costumes or “aesthetics” meant to make a statement (and often conflate them all with Dramatic, for that reason). Consequently, they don’t consider that many of us still want to look as “put together” and conducive to our essences as the non-alt people do.

I'm at the age where I don't necessarily care about trends anymore (I'm 33). My husband and I are planning on having a family soon, and I want to get pieces that still fit my personal style, but still be practical for mom life. One way I can already tell a way to keep it is in my jewelry. I have lots of chokers and gothic jewelry.

This is so so helpful for artists (whether that's new or returning from burnout lol) in creating and designing characters!! Depending on the character, simplifying their design by abstract concepts can help further define them and their backstories. Design choices can be simple or complex too - I have a character who is extremely enthusiastic about jellyfish and so I always have some aquatic theme to her clothes because she would wear a flowy tank top that resembles a jellyfish lol.

I'm glad you emphasized how important fashion history is. I've been working on upgrading my personal style since all the clothes I bought in my early 20s are worn out, but modern trends aren't to my taste so I'm looking into the past for inspiration. "Whimsigoth" has been a rare source of modern inspiration for me because I've dressed similarly since I was a teen, & because it is inspired by the 90s, which was inspired by the 70s and 30s. On the opposite side of the history spectrum I've been obsessed with medieval pouches and belt bags, and 18th century mitts and tie-on pockets. My style will always include black outfits, but I'm finally learning (and able to afford!) to wear more colors. Now that I understand my palette I know what undertones are best so I can choose my best version of any color, including the best shades of black for me. It's been a lot of personal discovery. Green is my "power color" that always gains me compliments. I used to feel like a raw deli ham in white, but now that I know my version of "white" is cream I feel like a fae goddess, or the ghost of a Hollywood starlet. One of my 2025 wardrobe goals is to customize a web-like mohair sweater with iridescent glass pearls, like a cobweb covered in dewdrops. I also want to try embroidery and/or beadwork to emphasize my gothic sensibilities, like patching holes with crimson drops of blood.

Congrats on the crochet! I knit myself all my sweaters and it really does make a difference my sweaters are one of a kind I also make or alter my own wardrobe Heck even changing the buttons on an existing garment can make a difference

When i was 15 it was the first time I dyed my hair: black. During the following years i did fun colors and even back to my natural chestnut color. But for and years years now its black again,and its right for me 🖤

Astrology side note: Weirdly I have a Leo Stellium, Leo Venus, Leo sun, Leo mercury etc. but I never liked Leo recommendations… but when I think about it I am super drawn to things align with my Scorpio moon and my Aquarius 5th house, Libra rising. ( thanks for calling out 5th house never noticed that before!) I almost kinda take my Leo Venus to say - you love the things that YOU love. Fashion to me always links back to how I feel, so I have kinda decided to interpret my Leo Venus as a redirection to self in weird way. I donno if that makes sense? Also I have almost exclusively dated people with strong Scorpio / Libra placements ( again almost like a redirection to my own energies). I don’t know if this is correct reading of the placement but I think it kinda works in a strange metaphorical way lol. Any insight? Am I over thinking it?

people think i have my looks off social media because my styles are an almost standoffish, editorial kind of strange. in truth, i was broke as hell and was forced to cut, dye, alter my clothes in any way or form to make them still wearable and have been wearing the same clothes since middle school, they just transformed or had to be transformed since then. there's something very true about clothes carrying your life story sometimes. i'm still the most proud over a jeans i hand patched during the time i was hospitalised. in the span of three years, it kept transforming - more patches, black dye, more embroidery. just like me.

I lost my personal style when I tried to apply body type & colour season recommendations to the extreme. I love dark, gloomy and mysterious art to the core of my soul, but that was not at all reflected in those classic, light summer looks. Now I'm returning to my dark self, even though it goes against my supposed best colours and lines. Some rules are made to be broken! 🖤

This is great:) I am a magickal practitioner and I gravitate towards the Siren aesthetic. I like comfortable black clothing preferably dresses or skirts. Im trying to transition all my clothing to natural fibers (harder than it seems). I have long dreadlocks, my makeup I tend to do dark but very soft-warm colors and very blended. I wear silver, large jewelry to contrast against the more rustic fabrics I like to wear.

I always thought the Strawberry Dress (remember her?) was cute as hell but objectively doesnt fit my style, but three years later i absolutely snapped up a slouchy little black cardigan with oversized strawbs on it. Also I'd been kinda coveting Florence Pugh's grown out buzz cut situation for a year before i finally caved and chopped my hair down to an inch (had been trying to grow it out, but honestly dont really like long hair that much) and honestly i dig that bc while i was inspired by her, i would have hated being compared to her

Great video! Spot on re DIY and one's personal style. I make jewelry and occasionally knit as well. I also take a lot of inspiration from current and vintage sewing patterns (I've been meaning to learn to use a sewing machine). I very much appreciate the advice to tailor (heh) style to one's profession, lifestyle, and climate. So many style guides prescribe a set "recipe" willy-nilly that it feels like the authors don't stop to consider that their readers might not have a car-and-driver sort of existence. Some of us have to run for the bus or the train to get to work; some of us (fine, me) are doing our best to keep up with a baby in the house. And that's before one gets to considerations such as sensory comfort: I recently discovered that I'm autistic, and that very much affects what I'll wear (or not). I cannot abide synthetic fibers, sandpaper textures, or abbreviated bodycon styles. To me they're dreadful and a combination of all three would be my worst sartorial nightmare. In any event this is one reason why autumn and winter are my two favorite seasons, since I then have an excuse to surround myself with beautiful long layers. So far my favorite cold weather inspiration is a traditional Venetian cloak/cape called a tabarro, which looks very striking when the wearer swooshes it about their shoulders. Sorry for the small essay. Again, thank you!

I have added red rose patches to my boring black leather bag and small black handbag and also glued on red glitter stones (strass-steine, I don't know what their called in English). Now they look fancy and dark romantic ❤️🌹

Bringing Astrology into you personal style is so interesting! I've never much related to my Sun Sign (Libra) but as I did more research into the whole of my chart it's so liberating seeing the whole picture. I really appreciate the care that you put into the whole “birth chart in fashion” concept. I work in the metaphysical industry and I even find this stuff to be so confusing when looking on Pinterest. Most of my chart is ruled by Pisces (Sun, Mercury, Venus, Saturn) and it’s in the fifth house. But I have Scorpio and Libra in my first house. And I have a Cancer moon. For a while, I felt like I had to be more Libra in my appearance so I was shunning all of my water placements. Boy, was that a terrible idea.

Thank you so much for making this video. I feel like this can solve many people's problems and help them express themselves in a very unique and curated way. It for sure sparks inspiration within me too. I always bleach my hair to a pretty close to white blonde shade and add different slight hues to it. My hair is part of my overall style and is always incorporated into my outfits - at least from my perspective. The clothes I prefer to wear look way nicer on me when my hair is very light. I tried wearing them with dark hair or my natural hair color (which is a slightly warm (golden) level 7 to 6 with hints of silvery light blonde highlights (not grays). I tried to utilize dark hair with my preferred moody dark aesthetics but I never like how that combo looks on me. For a long time I thought the dark aesthetic would just not work for me, but it was really the combo that didn't work out to my liking. Nowadays I like to combine bright colors with the dark colors I love so much and it works like a charm for me. The light hair is the add on that makes it perfectly suitable for my personal aesthetic and I am now trying to figure out which length and cut I prefer on myself (in combination what I prefer to wear in clothes plus my lifestyle). To me hair is a huge part of my style, so that for now is my biggest challenge. Not only because it takes a while to grow certain hairstyles but also because I've literally tried out so many already and never made it to the point of seeing it in relation to my clothing style. And I just recently learned that it's absolutely not about what I like on other people or which images draw me in, it's purely about myself and the way I perceive myself.

Since finding out I'm "soft autumn" I did a short bleach bath on my black denim jacket that was too dark for me. Then dyed it using black tea. It's giving a grungy or mad max kind of vibe and I highly recommend it. I have also used the tea dye to darken up a floral dress that was too high contrast and it makes me look like an eerie sepia photo! I cut off the puff sleeves too so it looks more like a vest. Bit of trial and error to get it to sit right but I love it!
