I love the point about the inner child. I was OBSESSSED with Final Fantasy VII for YEARS. It came out when I was 9-10 and I played it for hundreds of hours over the years. I recently bought a dress because it looked so much like Aeris' dress from the original game. I am 37 years old and this dress makes me so happy. A stranger even stopped me in the grocery store to tell me how beautiful I looked the first time I wore it! Haha
This makes me so happy because that really shows how personal style can really stem from your inner child and I can imagine how giddy you felt when a stranger complimented your Aerith dress!
I always advocate for personally style! People equate them to microtrends or trendy “aesthetics” but I think they’re helpful for presenting yourself to the world and finding pieces you like and aren’t buying because they’re trendy!
I so admire you for rocking the bangs. I love them, but as someone who’s been super experimental with their hair, I know people can be quite vocal when they don’t like a hairstyle, so I appreciate you wearing your hair how you want it. 🖤
Super cute glasses, Melissa! I, too, am grateful for developing a signature style. My birthday just passed (January 10th) and just turned 30; as I got older, I became more comfortable with embracing my Afrogoth/dark aesthetic identity. I feel looking back, I would wear things in accordance with what was provided to me by my parents or the environments I was in (ex. School, jobs, opinions based on what my peers and/or community thought looked good on me) instead of what I wanted to wear. I call my style Ladybug or Widow style because I stick to mainly clothes that have the colors black, red, and white in because of my dark identity and Ladybug is a nickname my mom calls me (unrelated Ladybugs are one of the few bugs/insects that I actually don't hate along with most spiders). I also occasionally wear dark blue, green, purple, and brown alongside black as an accent color on days that I don't want red as an accent color. Filtering my style this way has helped me save money because now I go for patterns, textures, colors, and combos that I know I will wear and be fascinated to combine together. I also try to use my astrological chart to influence my style, too, thanks to your amazing astrology and personal style videos. My big three are Capricorn (most of my chart except for my Saturn, Rising, Pluto, and Jupiter placements), Scorpio (my Pluto and Jupiter), and Aries (my Rising Sign). It's fascinating how my dark aesthetic tastes blend in with my signs and fashion. I don't really look to celebrities as inspirations for style muses, but three eternal ones for me are Siouxsie Sioux, Dita Von Teese, and Kelis. I also love Marley Bloodrose's TH-cam videos, and I want to purchase some of her makeup in the future. Fictional characters that I take inspiration from are Sailor Mars, Sailor Saturn, Ayane from DOA, Marceline the Vampire Queen, the Hex Girls, Master Cyclonis, Numbuh 5/Abigail Lincoln, Wednesday and Morticia Addams, Zoe Aves/Black Cuervo, and most gothic female characters in most media. I am trying to find some celebrity muses that are more connected to my specific astrological placements and am open to suggestions if you or any of the viewers are inclined to offer any suggestions. Wonderful video!
I love all of this! You have such an amazing curation of muses and I think I'll have more insight on astrological muses in future muses but your dark aesthetic sounds like it can also delve into 80s futurism since so animes you mentioned take inspiration from it but honestly you already have an amazing list 🖤also thank you!
@silkymochi Thanks! Now that I think about it, you're right. I always loved the 80's even though I wasn't born then. And I always liked the looks of Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Aeon Flux, laboratories, and geometric patterns (despite having astigmatism and being nearsighted).
I wrote down a style guide for myself. I really need a new closet and your tips really helped! Core colors -black, browns, creams, greens, blues, pinks Core interests -casual, denim, 90s grunge, mushrooms, cozy, indie Inner child exploration -fantasy, supernatural, magical beings, nature, cartoons, animals Future self -will I like this 5 years later, or am I just following trends? The hardest part will be deciding what I should get rid of 😬
That was a good point about mainstream notable people not always having a personal stylist/Glam Team. Dita Von Teese is a living neo-burlesque legend. Just yesterday I watched an early '80s Sandra Bernhard interview clip on Letterman and it was in that time period (around the time he interviewed Iggy Pop) that you could tell that many notable entertainers still purchased their own clothing & dressed how they felt for interview segments & premieres. Also everyone didn't look _EXACTLY_ the same, which I found interesting. Also call me crazy but Sandra in her early career in her own quirky/eccentric way was gorgeous. I had forgotten how hot she was.🔥🖤But this video was interesting. Around two years ago I begun dressing how I feel; more Gothic/Darkly-Inclined and it certainly saves me money as now all I really purchase are Black Rustler jeans (the cheapest) and shirts of my interests: Sisters of Mercy t shirts. The Crow/Brandon Lee shirts. Horror icons (The Shape/Michael Myers). Edgar Alan Poe shirts, Siouxsie and the Banshees t shirts. Plus, of course, black work boots only.🦇🦇🖤🐈⬛
I miss that time where celebrities truly picked their own clothing for most occasions- I think stylists are important in photoshoots or when curating looks for a TV show And love all the references you talk about also always love work boots 🖤
Heh heh, yes: Work boots are oddly timeless. Plus they go _GREAT_ with black jeans.🖤👍You're truly a person of culture for enjoying all of my references. I was recently watching rare on-set behind the scenes crew members VHS recordings of The Crow set in the Winter of 1993 in Wilmington, North Carolina at the abandoned cement factory & side streets wherein the film was shot. Had he lived it would have been interesting to see the career of Brandon possibly become even more of a Goth Icon, Bela Lugosi-style(?). Ya just plain never know.🤔😔You've got it right: Sure, stylists are great for a photo shoot or a movie set but it astounds me that modern day celebs, as in someone in their mid '40s, still uses one for a routine talk show appearance. Boggles the mind when you consider how they probably wished they could dress. Ah well.🦇🎃🐈⬛🖤
I completely agree. Be true to yourself and your personal style will be timeless. I still find myself intrigued by outfits or articles of clothing I see that look good on others that I know wouldn’t work on my body type or with my style. I try to just appreciate it on them and move on. That formula is so helpful. I wrote it down. I’m going to use it on my next closet declutter. Also, I adore your bangs. They look great on you. I’ve had v bangs for about 5 years now and I’m sure people look at me like I’m weird but oh well. Lucky for me I’m completely aloof in public settings so I wouldn’t notice if someone did stare.
When you have a style and love it, you will not make mistakes....so everything you do buy is never wasted. Personally I go for all black, some colors rarely (red, purple, blue and green), mostly gothic metalhead style, lots of velvet, cotton, lace, leather....everything goes with everything, but functional stuff that can be worn at night and at day.. That is the beauty of the style when you have it, choose one and everything will be used always.
One of the things I struggled with was when I found labels for my personal style, I started to box myself in the definition of those labels. My style can be described as half witchy/whimsigoth and half glam metal/boho rock. I kept coming across style blogs saying I "needed" long hair, but I'm a gamine and I both feel and look way better with short messy hair. So I kept overthinking my hair for the longest time. 😆 I would keep growing my hair out only to turn around and compulsively cut it again. One thing that helped me is that I would compare an item while shopping online next to a photo of myself to see if I could visualize myself wearing it. If it seems like a costume on me, then it's a no.
I totally agree with your points here.Unfortunately even in my ripe mature age to find myself buying things that I didn't like much after being bombarded by media. As for bangs I have been criticized for ever and no! that's me!
Oh nauuur! hahaha. I literally finished watching the show for a second time and came across your channel because it was recommended directly from the halloween episode! I loved the style and vibes from that show, its too bad it was just one season. I’m loving your videos and learning some good tips! 😄 @@silkymochi
I leave things in my cart too, most of the time I end up not wanting it anymore, especially if it’s a TikTok ad 😂 loved this video as always 🖤
Yes the leave it in the cart really works! It helped me learn "maybe I don't like it as much as I thought" also thank you 🖤

Closet clear outs can be so fun and its an exciting journey 🖤
