    I still have my Juno-G and still use it together with my Nord Stage. It's incredible how powerful the Juno-G was, and actually still is today, considering its price at the time. They included basically everything, the only thing that was missing was sample pads and they added them with a software update using the buttons below the screen. It can record audio, it has a full featured sequencer, Live Settings allow to recall live with the push of a button complex setups of 16 sounds that can be split and layered in any way and distributed on external keyboards based on midi channels as well, and you can save a different sequencer song with each Setting... It's just as Roland realized it was too powerful for the price, they've never done anything similar for years in that price range, its successors like the Juno-D or Gi were just synths while this was a powerful and complete workstation with a sequencer with audio recording, sample editing, master keyboard functions, programmable arpeggiator, lots of effects that allowed for complex effect routing (it also had two separate exits and you could route sounds and effects independently) and a very powerful sound synthesis engine. Last but not least, with a very intuitive and easy to use user interface, many concepts are still used in the Fantom today. It had a problem with the screen which broke easily, there's a guy in UK that sells after market screens (he makes them with an Arduino), and you could make them yourself as the project is on GitHub, I bet that you can buy them in the US as well.

    Isn‘t there a USB dongle for the Juno-X and Jupiter-X, where can use your Roland Cloud sub on these machines? Meaning as long as you have an active sub you can download all the sounds to your synth. For some strange Roland reason this dongle is not available for the Fantom imho. At least it was like this a few months ago. This is the reason why I stayed away from the Fantom and ultimately from Roland in general.

    The Juno G was one of my all time favorite board! But the materials Roland used to build was terrible. The first thing that goes out, is the screen and the volume pots or knobs. But Cheers to an amazing board!

    I started programming my own logic pro api (sort off) for this using python. I’m going in deep and control absolutely everything. One thing that’s going absolutely killer is that it will have unlimited banks and encoders and fader pages! All color coded, with custom names and everything. I can’t wait. I’m writing the code as of this moment and I hope to finish before years end.

    Nice review. Picked up a Juno-G in very nice condition (w/replaced screen). I also use it with a fully weighted keyboard (Korg D1) and love the sounds. So many lush and complex pads to complement the Korg piano. I also have a Roland Jupiter Xm, but there is something special about this board.

    uf. fantom 0 or modx+, that is the question. i know both have 3000+ sounds. i know modx+ has like 10000 arps. fantom much, much less. less memory/storage as well. but, from what i see here, that lcd is super snappy. i dont remember modx+ having auch snappy lcd, maybe im remembering lcd from initial modx videos which were years ago. anyways, do you have experience with modx+? it also has much less knobs and sliders, so now im torn. i like fantom with all controls, knobs and faders, pads are also great… but i cant get over them 10000 arps in modx+. and that pearly gates performance preset in modx+/montage m is just divine… id say f it and just go with full fledged fantom or montage m, but for that kind of moneys i can get either one of these plus an mpc, digitakt and a digital piano for the wifey and still have some moneys for a new pc, soundcard and… ok, maybe not all that, but close, lol. thank you coming to my ted talk. subbed. cheers.

    Hello! Great video, thank you! I have a 1M$ question for you please, hopefully you can help me (and many users of the SL as I saw on forums): I struggle to record in sync in Ableton using the SL sequencer. When I launch the sequencer, the midi notes are out of sync. As a plan B, I insert a delay in the preferences settings in Ableton and then use quantize manually in Ableton to compensate afterwards. Could you please let me know if you are in sync when recording using the sequencer like with the Push for example which is perfectly in sync? Or I have to accept that I need to insert a delay anyway and then record using the metronome to be somehow in sync and then use quantize? If you succeed to be in perfect sync in Ableton using the sequencer without inserting a delay compensation in LIVE settings, that would be fantastic if you could share a video? Or at least letting me know how you do it? Thanks again so much for all your videos on the SL, this is great! Love the SL MK3, just this out of sync issue which is killing me:) Thank you!!

    Im wondering how does the fantom 06 sound in person compared to Zenology. I use Zen but I also have an older fantom Xr and even though they have some the same sounds I do notice a better overall sound sonically coming from my Fantom, not a huge difference but I can definitely tell my hardware vs the vst

    • @GammaLensMedia
      @GammaLensMedia 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Personally it sounds almost identical. The only edge Zenology seems to have is ease of reverb presets over the fantom. Honestly I can't quite tell if there's any analog warm when running the fantom 06 into Ableton.

    Nice video bro, I've been watching your videos, both on the Fantam 06 and the SL MK3, because I'm wanting to buy one of them but I'm not sure which one to choose, I understand that they have different proposals despite having a lot of things in common, but I would really like your opinion on what would be the best option for an intermediate user. I normally use Ableton to play with some plugins that I have, another question I have is whether the tones that come with the Fantom 06 are really good and if you use them instead of plugins? I would be very grateful for the answer! Nice job bro, tks!

    • @GammaLensMedia
      @GammaLensMedia 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a difficult one to answer. The SLMKIII is very multi purpose. It has a ton of advantages when it comes to multi instrument control. It's definitely great bang for your buck. But it has a big learning curve initially to setup. The fantom 0 separates itself because it has sounds built into it. It's versatile but not quite like the MKIII. It's a great peice of equipment to get started in the Analog gear world. If you're interested in analog equipment and having Roland's sounds I'd go with the fantom. If you love the digital space and like sequencing then I'd go with the slmkiii. It's a good midi controller all around in my opinion.

  • @gretareinarsson7461
    @gretareinarsson7461 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Interesting. So if I want to connect multiple external synths into the Fantom and into DAW, how would that work?

    • @GammaLensMedia
      @GammaLensMedia 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a tough one. You can send midi out on channels 1-16. Then, route your external synths back into an audio interface that your DAW can receive audio (and / or mixer) depending on how many inputs you have. Brief description, but it will take time to make sure it functions properly.

    They don't give discounts on the software, because they don't make any money on the hardware. The hardware is just to get you into the eco system, but all the profit comes from the software. For the big Fantom that might be another story, but the smaller ones, they make 0 profit on.

    • @GammaLensMedia
      @GammaLensMedia 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is true. I wish they integrated with Zenology when making presets just a little bit better.

  • @Inverse_Midas

    I remember owning a fantom x back around 2005, and updating the available memory on the synth was dead easy. It used PC ram sticks, so you just popped the cover off and installed. Just check that you read the Roland memory upgrade document for correct RAM voltage and speed. I suspect like most tech, the RAM is soldered on to the board at the factory on the 0 series. I love my fantom 06, but the amount of storage they give it is really terrible. Its ok for patches sure, but for those lush sample packs, some of them you’d be lucky to get three of the bigger ones installed. Why don’t Roland allow users to install to external usb flash drive? I suspect they want to drive sales towards the main fantom synth and not the 0 series!

      Yeah it definitely seems like they're really limited on the 0 series just to drive sales to the flagship. I believe the Juno Gi allowed a usb stick for additional space. The fantom 0 is good but definitely missing some key specs!

      Lol, it's ok. Just make sure when you're in roland Cloud manager, you're downloading the fantom 0 series expansions. It's should sort in the top left hand corner.

    I have a juno g with a dud sceen. My boy started learning and is using it. Found an aftermarket screen dor $100. Should i fix it or put it towards a keyboard with a hammer action?

    • @GammaLensMedia
      @GammaLensMedia 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honestly that's a tough one. If you're wanting him to learn piano, hammer action is very good. However, the capabilities of sound in the Juno G are really good as well. Honestly I'd fix the screen see if there is interest in playing before buying something with hammer action. If he's really interested then you can advance from there.

      Juno-G is no good for learning to play. Its keyboard is springy and with smaller keys than normal. In fact you (or your kid) can hurt your fingers trying to play or learn how to play like it is a piano. On the other hand, it could be very useful for learning ins and outs of music production but a working display is a must ($200) and learning curve is very steep for beginners, plus it is old, slow and incompatible with modern DAW setups which are common these days.

      @alicaramba7680 Thanks for the advice. He seems more interested in the sounds it makes than anything production related. He is progressing fast though. I've ordered an aftermarket screen quite cheap but it's not a 5 minute job. I'll have to invest in a proper electric piano I think.

      @@ivana6141if he is interested in the sounds, you need a synthesizer so he can start learning how to create sounds himself, something that he would never learn on an electric piano. The Juno is also a very powerful synthesizer. However, to start playing with the sounds and learning sound synthesis, he needs the screen, and since you already bought it, I would repair it. Download the manual and give it to him, it's essential to learn what he can do with the instrument. After some time, you will notice if he is not interested in music production or synthesizers and just wants to learn classical or jazz or whatever needs a piano keyboard, and in that case you can invest in an electric piano and sell the Juno, or even better buy an electric piano and keep the Juno. You have a very powerful instrument and it would be a pity to sell it if he starts playing with a band or gets interested in music production, although for music production he would probably use a computer.

    If you make a pattern with step sequencer ..You can assign different roots in real time like Keystep Pro ...from keys?

    • @GammaLensMedia

      You can change the pattern notes in real time in the step sequencer. You can also adjust those "scales" in scales modes highlighted pads.

    Thank you for your video. It was very clarifying. I have one question, if you can answer me, please: on the modx there is a fader to usb level (daw level), next to the master volume fader. Furthermore, there is a volume knob for the Analog inputs from the back panel. This is amazing for playing live with two keyboards and virtual instruments from a laptop. That let all de control of volume in your hands. So, here is the question: how is this scenario on the Fantom 0? To summarize the question: is it simple to control the volume of the usb and analog inputs on the fly, in live situations, on Fantom-0, like it is on the modx? Thank you!

      @GammaLensMedia 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honestly, I've never used the fantom 0 in a live scenario. The output knob on the top left will control the total output volume from the board. However, I'm not sure about the vst volume. You can, in theory, assign the faders as well to a cc number. If you're using Ableton Live, the volume can be assigned a cc number as well. Top left-hand side "MIDI" button. You could probability make a template to corelate with the midi cc assigned to those faders. If that makes sense.
