Living in the NE of England retired with time to enjoy a great hobby .Just fun building and flying RC planes with a little extra modelling thrown in. Tips and tricks I've picked up over the years and new ones I've just discovered
Sometimes things go wrong, lets put it right part one.
Well that didn't work time to try something different.

I have been avoiding building this swop meet bargin for some time. I think I can now do the kit justice thanks to some brave experimentation from a fellow modeller in producing the iconic lozange pattern.

With the upper wing nearing completion it's time to think about the cabane.
Mock up of the "Flair" Fokker DR1.

Now that the bulk of the upper wing has been built time to check how it's going to go together. I'm tempted to depart from the Flair cabane set up but still some head scratching to go before a final decision is made.

hi mark I don't blame you for wanting to change the covering, we're all different in different ways, if this is something that you want to do then that's rite for you , anyway cheers for the video and all your projects, 👍
Thank you 😊 onwards and upwards to the next challenge.
nice!
Ooooh ..Silk screen that lozenge pattern on the fabric would be a fantastic look. I think that's how they did it back then, printed the pattern on the fabric then applied.
If only, my daughter could do it if she had access to screen printing equipment (degree in surface design) oh well never mind ☺️.
Really looking forward to your covering solution. Good luck
😮 😱 !
Hi Mark those metallic paints often need to be applied onto a gloss black under coat. It creates the depth in the paint with the gloss surface providing the shine. The metallic paints are then misted on quite lightly.
@@richw0123 I was told so perhaps my yourself note taken for next try.
Mark that’s too bad about the covering. I have ordered the covering for my clipped wing cub build Jeff in LA USA
Trying to take the positive from the experience, chance to try a different technique so it's a win really ☺️.
I'm building a Ben Buckle Matador now. I find the wingtip construction fiddly. It does not seem well thought out to me. If I made another I would simplify it.
What is the issue? Is it the tapered spars?
I've just stumbled in this video of what 8 think might be a similar full wing movement solution to the one you are looking at doing and we're puzzling over a while back, it may not be the solution you need but it's certainly interesting Anyway, here's the link and I hope you find it useful th-cam.com/video/aUz6F1nOLIA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0yk_FaL3ahPyFgh8
Perfect conditions, with the wind turbines still and forlorn LOL LOL LOL.
That little bi plane was a ripper 🤙🤙🤙
It's a crazy little plane solid balsa wings with almost no shape to them.
Happy days mark really enjoyed that box reveal, great score ,I just received my new build today for next year from the wife, well I brought it ,and told her thanks Darling for my present, she is not happy ,ya can never have enough planes 😂😂😂
Great thinking well done 👏.
That appeared to fly perfectly straight out of your hand and climb away beautifully. The wind sounded a little gusty but the model did not seem to mind. I hope to have mine finished for an early Spring maiden. SC12 glow up front.
Sure you will love your model she looks great in the air, I added 1/8" packing to the leading edge of the wing. Clear skies and fair winds to you.
@@MarkCroucherRC4fun Many thanks.
Nice selection of planes and great flying.
We had some fun.
What model is that e-glider?
@@alfredvink Just asked Roy it's called the Amethyst 2 produced by Pichler
@@MarkCroucherRC4funThanks Mark.
Mark you really brought this pilot to life. Jeff in LA USA
Cheers Jeff
Wow Mark great complete Flair kit. Looking forward to seeing you build it up and seeing your scheme. Thank you for encouraging me to finish my clipped wing cub build. Jeff in LA USA
Think it's going to be a great project, I love building and it's even better if I can encourage and support others in giving it a go.
Mark sure looks like you’ll had a great day flying around the patch. Jeff in LA USA
Everyone had a ball.
woah woah what was that sticker at the back of the plane
On the little Biplane, yes as expected it's what you would find on a late 1930s German plane. I personally don't have an issue with the symbol on a historical model Im rather less sympathetic if someone marches through the streets today with it.
Well said mark
Lovely flying.
We had fun 😊
Will definetly follow this build Mark🤠👍🛩️🇿🇦
That Flair Kit is a treat Mark, thanks for showing us. So sad that great precision Balsa Kits like this are no longer made. cheers Paul
It's a real shame, I was very fortunate to snatch this one up.
Very true regarding kits now day s ya can get em but ya pay though the teeth for em or if ya lucky there around
wow thats a nice kit!!!
It's such a shame that they are no longer available.
So nice to see some one building thier own planes. The sea of ARFs at the field every week is just so boring.
Its not for everyone but it's an important part of the hobby for me.
There’s a German company producing lozenge covering film, but it is extremely expensive. Search for bespannfolie-lozenge to have a look.
Yes, those isometric drawings are a real plus . Can't wait for the build videos 🎉
I could look at plans like this all day long.
I was going to mention Cliff Harvey's method of printing the lozenge pattern on tissue and putting in on top of Doculam, but I see Cliff beat me to it!
To steal an idea from one person is plagiarism to steal from many is research 😂
Nice video Mark, looking forward to your progress serving as the inspiration for my D7 restoration 😉
Stay tuned
I'm way across the Pond, Flair has always been highly thought of here. I nicked one for $65 off of Ebay. I can't wait to watch your build. I'm using Spoonflower covering. Cheap and easy. Watch the TH-cam video how to. Engine a .70, .80 or .90. I'm not sure what the best would be. Advice is a Welcome. The problem I notice is, Americans are Lazy. Foaming Electric what we Fly now days. I love building. The Flair kits are Outstanding, having all the little bits like hinges and tank etc. That comes in the kit. I have the Ben Buckle DVIII also. That ones gonna be Modded like crazy. A upgraded balsa covered wing. Thanks again for another enjoyable video!!!!
Thanks for the kind comments, I have a Flair D7 with a 90 4 stroke up front, rarely get past half throttle but no lumps of lead up front.
Hello Mark Croucher, So this is your new project? Another very nice model. I hope you enjoy putting it together! I would like to know how much wingspan and weight the model has. Greetings from Lübeck Germany
Wingspan is 1550mm weight 3.3/3.8 kg. Stay tuned
Okay Thanks!
What a thorough kit Mark, excellent, I was going to say you could print a lozenge pattern onto tissue paper which is a technique used a lot by freeflight modellers. You could tissue over doculum. Anyway you've sorted it now so Jonathan's technique will be interesting to see, cheers
I'm SORRY, but I have to correct you on the Flair DR1, It was most definitely a kit in it's own right at 1/4 scale. I built and still fly one. Looking on some other sites I think it was model part number 1031. Yes it followed the same build style as the Baronette and was/is a cartoon scale. I can however be made (as you have been doing) to look much better. I have powered mine with a Super Tigre 2500 / a EME35 petrol (to much really) and when it gets it's next make over in the new year a DLE30 petrol.
Think you misunderstood me while there is a 1/4 scale DR1 by Flair this is not build from a kit but has been build from the plans. A practical stand off scale design.
A very interesting video, showing a brilliant Bargain from a swap meet. any chance of putting a link so we could all see Jonathan's work ?
I'll post a couple of photos with his permission.
I can't wait to see the D.7 build. I have one too.
Looks like a great kit. Too bad they are out of business. I will have to see how fit they build any WWII kits. That is more my style. Wishing you and your family a blessed Thanksgiving from this of us across the pond. I don’t think it’s a holiday for you, but you can live vicariously through us. Crack on!!
Another fun project, at least you are starting it next year 😊
That's the plan! 😅
@ Tomorrow then 😂

Great vid, love the plane, love the commentary even though I thought it was Vic and Bob for several minutes!!
😂 😂 "And away"
@@MarkCroucherRC4fun vic and bob are my heroes. Gone fishing is another gem!!
Thanks for you excellent video's. I am building the large Dancing Wings DR1 and had to make the tail supports (missing from kit). I used aluminium tube with a core of carbon tube. At the ends this was then inserted into sections of a larger internal diameter aluminium tube.A 'double' section was cut, flattened in the middle, and drilled for 2 screws to fit under the bottom. I compressed the ali tube sections at the ends to make a flat for fixing to the underneath & tail and inserted a small section of carbon tube into the tailplane for the fixing to pass through. At the ends the ali support and carbon tube was drilled through and 1mm carbon solid pegs inserted (probably not necessary as I also used epoxy). This gave me rigidity and light weight. It's amazing how many different ways there are of resolving issues and your posts a brilliant at providing good ideas. Thanks very much from the South of France.
Thanks for sharing your solution. We can always learn from others.
Ya doing a great job on this mark 💯 percent mate enjoying all ya vids thanks🤙🤙🤙
Thank you 😊
Looking good Mark🤠👍🛩️🇿🇦
Thanks 👍
Always interesting to see how other modelers solve these issues. Cheers!
It's never a waste of effort to do good alignment fixtures. Well done. I like the overlap method to get the length exactly right.
Thanks 👍
The Gauge is Pure Genius. I enjoy your videos. There's a German TH-cam page that shows you how the applied the Sleek Camo Pattern. Till the Next one!!!!
If you could point me in the direction of the "German" chap that would be great. 😊
Mark your inclination gauge works great. How did set the gauge distances between the wings? Jeff balsa dusty in LA USA
Sorry if I didn't make it clear, on some grey board I traced the upper surface of the lower wing and the under surface of the middle wing. I was then able to slide them in place between the two wings and taped them together. This provided the template for the upper wing angle and gap.
Not sure the weight of the cabanes is much of an issue with that massive engine lol
😂 I was thinking more about visual weight rather than actual weight.
@@MarkCroucherRC4funit looks pretty awesome and a superb job to be very proud of to my uneducated eyes but I guess it's the old adage of an artist is his own worst critic
I've just bought a Matador kit. I was planning to use the hardest stringers for the wing spars?
That's what I did, before you get stuck in check all the wood and try to put it in order from hardest to softest.
