    Can you explain the AE process? Does needle indicate Fstop selected by camera?

    • @MattRyanPhoto55
      @MattRyanPhoto55 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Sure can! So with the shutter priority of this camera it meters through the lens and indicates in the viewfinder what the F-stop should be on the left side with a needle and a series of f-stops, you can simply spin the aperture ring to the indicated f-stop or you can set the aperture ring to the orange/red indicator and the camera will make the adjustment it self automatically. All of this is based on the shutter speed you want, with moving subjects you would choose a higher shutter speed if the desired result is to stop motion, and the camera will use a more open aperture(lower F-stop number), slower shutter speeds the camera will use a more closed aperture(higher F-stop number), etc.. etc.. So yes the needle will indicate which F-stop it is selecting when you half press the shutter release before taking the photo if you need/want to change it. This camera can be full manual and you can just use the exposure metering as a suggestion and select the setting you prefer, or use external metering. It is a great little camera, good glass, and very affordable, it is about the same size roughly as the Olympus OM models so it is very easily carried. Plus it has a very pleasing shutter sound, one of my favorites so far. This camera has now become my goto 35mm for an every day carry in my bag. I have recently been pairing it with my newly acquired Fuji GW690III and they both fit perfectly in my sling bag, where my Nikon F3 (which I cherish) would not be able to fit.

    I'm sure you will enjoy the camera! How are you going with it now? I bought a Minox 35ML on a trip to London in 1990. It became my preferred travel camera.They have super sharp lenses. You will have no problems with the zone focussing, just use the depth of field scale. Some were prone to sticky aperture blade problems and dust inclusion. All in all, a lovely little camera.

    Wow what film stock is that? And how do you set the ISO on that camera 📸 and what is the range compared to the GSN which I have? Thanks

    • @MattRyanPhoto55
      @MattRyanPhoto55 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I was using Lomo 400 which rumor says it is Ultramax but I do not believe that, I have shot tons of Ultramax and it does not look the same. Lomo 800 however is Max 800 which is what Kodak puts into the disposable cameras. ISO is set on the lens, and I tend to set the ISO to over expose by one stop to compensate for the voltage difference in the newer batteries. So example would be a 400 speed film, I set the ISO to 200 has always worked well for me. THe viewfinder on this is pretty good, big, and has a blueish coating to it which makes it seem everything is brighter, I really like it. I would say it is pretty close to the GSN in size and clarity.

    • @erichramone7812
      @erichramone7812 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @MattRyanPhoto55 interesting 🤔 and thank you for the reply. You mentioned the voltage ⚡ change due to the new battery 🔋 old battery difference obviously 5.7 vs 6v, does this actually make an impact on the meter reading? I've read in many places that it doesn't. I don't through a couple rolls of film on my camera and they seemed exposed well. Have you been able to confirm in any way physically that it alters the meter reading? I've installed and serviced low voltage electrical systems and most systems have a design in place to compensate for voltage slight voltage variance. Now I did read that this is a confirmed issue for different older cameras but not the Yashica Electro 35 series. Just was wondering because I want to get it right, I know film has latitude and all that but I try to expose it right 👍. Thanks again for your response.

    • @MattRyanPhoto55
      @MattRyanPhoto55 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@erichramone7812 I don’t have any proof of that with the electro series. It might not care about voltage difference. I just do this on all older cameras that used mercury batteries. I say try the first half of the roll set to box speed and the second half set to overexpose by 1 stop and see what looks best! Since it’s not pushing or pulling it’s an easy test. Thanks!!

    The FA is a great camera but it shows how little experience you have with cameras if you think it's the greatest of all time. Like you weren't even alive back in the day how could you say something like that. Ever tried a Contax? Yashica? Olympus? Leica? The truth is there is no one greatest of all time. They are all great. If you want to put a finer point on it the Pentax K1000 is probably the greatest of all time as the price of it brought in a lot pf people who otherwise would have been priced out of the hobby. And it is a really good camera. They all use optics to project an image onto a film substrate.

      @@doofwop that’s great thanks for your insight and speculation. And by the way I have tried all of those other brands you name dropped, and own them. The K1000 is a great camera, I have one, used it, but it does not come anywhere near the capabilities of the more advanced Nikons or the metering the FA has. I do agree that the K1000 and the AE-1’s are more fitting for GOAT awards based on pricing, availability, ease of use and popularity. Again I have them and I use them. I have a IIIc and had it worked on by a guy who worked at Kodak in Rochester who serviced them when Kodak still existed and fixed their cameras. It is a nice camera in a tight little package. Slick design, seamless operation and heavy in a manner that makes me appreciative. I would say the praise for the photo results here for it is a bit overdone. There are a lot of vintage cameras that yield equal or better results for a lot less money. Like the Balda Baldessa you can find in perfect working order for $25. All the same features with a bigger viewfinder and also German. Not as mechanically nifty but same results.

      @MattRyanPhoto55 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can agree that there are other cameras that take just as or better. I never heard of the Baldessa now I think I am going to have to find one! Thanks for. the tip!

    Fantastic video Matt! I have the small c and am waiting for my first 2 rolls to come back from the lab! I managed to grab a 35mm lens on ebay awhile back so I'm super excited to see how those photos come back especially! Haven't seen too many photos with that lens on the web. Impressed by the quality of the images! What's been your favorite film to use? Subbed to your channel and hope to see more from the retina!

      @@NickedOff thanks! My favorite 35mm color film has to be lomography 400 with Kodak Colorplus a close second. Black and white I have to say Fomo 400 and Ilford HP5 equally. Unfortunately the IIIC has been sold there was just way too good of an offer on it to refuse. However I have a IIa that I am planning to take out soon. Ultimately I loved that IIIC it took amazing photos the lens was incredible. But ergonomics was a big factor it just was not the most comfortable camera to use. The IIa is smaller but it has a top thumb film advance which I prefer over the bottom and feels better in my hands. So it will be getting sent off to be repaired and get a CLA. In the meantime check out my other videos with other cameras. Currently my go to 35mm is my Nikon F3 with a 50mm f/1.8 and my go to medium format is a Bronica ETRSI for 6x4.5 and a Bronica s2a for 6x6. My digital setup is a Sony a7c and lately it has been sporting the new Sony 70-200 f/4 Macro G OSS II lens (amazing lens) more videos coming soon with that lens.

      @@MattRyanPhoto55 Very cool, I can understand your preference with ergonomics. I'd be curious to see what other cameras accept the Schneider Retina-Xenar lenses (DKL mount correct?), because I heard the Voigtlander DKL is different adapter? Or if there is an adapter I would be curious to see these lenses on an e-mount apsc camera

      Thanks! I was more concerned about the Nikon F3, ETRsi, and my 70-200 in my bag, I did not have the waterproof cover on it, and I never leave my gear more than a couple feet from me, even though I am pretty sure I was alone out there it was still giving me some worry walking about 100 feet from my bag lol. Plus getting soaked is not fun but I am glad I walked up there

    I have one of these and I love it. My only wish would be that the meter works in manual mode. Mine doesn’t. I don’t know if later models did? I have the 19 with the 45mm lens, 48mm filter thread. Apparently ca. 1965 according to another comment on this vid. Got it from a camera store in Edinburgh, with full CLA and a return warranty, for £70. They’re built like tanks, hence them keeping their looks I guess. Quite heavy for the size though.

      Lens is fantastic. The end result for a 35mm focal length lens rivals the best of a Leica. As was said back in the day, forget the bells and whistles on the camera box, go for the glass. This one is superb

    Ive been told by so many people, that these cameras are great, or at least the "AI" versions, but if they break, you're buggered. There are no spare parts on the market because when the company went bust, the CEO never liquidated the company and sent everything to the landfill.

    My first medium format film camera was a Yashica D. While I appreciate TLRs, I found that its lens isn't amazing, and I wasn't particularly fond of the slight parallax. I would like a nice SLR system like this one, and it seems much more manageable than something like an RB67. One of the nice things about the Yashica is that TLR systems are relatively compact, especially considering how the leaf shutter affects size and form factor. Great video. Thanks for sharing!
