ST5 tires transformed my Stromer ST3!
In this video I show you the difference between ST3 tires and ST5 tires, instruct you on how to change them, and provide before and after test rides with my review. Are the new tires worth $200? How hard is it to change the tires on a Stromer? I'll cover all of that. NOTE: I apologize the onboard footage is not better.     Do you think the new Angel ST tires on the ST7 have the same wet issues as the ones you have?

      @scucalibre I would think they would be ok based on the tread pattern appearing very similar to the ST5 tires I am riding now. It's also a matter of compound and the higher end variants are softer and better traction overall (including in the wet). 👍

      @@nvanpraag Hey, good to hear from you! I've got 7k miles (11km) on mine, It would have been much more but I moved from a 10km to 75km commute, and then it makes no sense to bike... But still use it for shopping etc. So far so good. Looking forward to those videos!

    Thanks, I need to true a wheel on the bike, I think, because I don't have the key to remove the battery. And I happen to have one of those toilet bolts! (Can you remove the Stromer wheel without removing the battery?)

      Hey @user-lh8ee7pv8m, I did not remove the battery before truing the wheel. It should not affect your ability to use this technique. However, if your bike is off and it thinks it's being stolen, you may need to turn the power on.

    Thanks for the real comments. I am researching and about to test ride the ST3 Pinion w suspension fork. Do you still have this bike? Your being a Bay Area guy… can you give me some feedback on hills and the rear hub? The common wisdom is that rear hubs are not ideal for steep grades. I live in Oakland, CA. Most of the videos and reviews I have been able to find are by folks in the mostly flat parts of Europe. So I have yet to see anyone talk extensively about riding Stromer in the 7-15% grade range. I guess my interest is if there are any serious shutdowns or if it just doesn’t feel right.… but also, even if it’s fine on steep hills, does it impact range in a way that is different than how it impacts range on a mid motor Bosch (I currently ride a Gazelle C380+ with a carbon belt and Enviolo hub). I am older… but reasonably fit. I am not looking for an effortless ride on hills… I just want to know if using a Stromer in the hills will be “all wrong”. Thanks. Maybe, if you still have this bike, this might be a future video suggestion.

      Hey @robertw, great question! I have basically two techniques - one that requires taking the rear wheel off and one that can be done on the road with the wheel on. I'll work up a video!

    I confirm, these tires are much much better. I had two accidents with the Cycle-e ST, both on humid roads. They are dangerous. I recommend everyone to change as soon as possible.

    Thanks for the pluses of riding an E bike. I've had my ST2 since 2015 , and still blown away by the Swiss Watch quality feel of this vehicle. The way you can double click smooth gear changes up or down blows my mind. I sure can't do that on my Bosch motors on my other E bikes. You channel is very informative . I subd and liked.     Hi, could I ask an advice ? I am a bit worried before buying a Stromer about flat tire on rear wheel alone on the road. Do you know if there are tire "flat resistant" that work with a Stromer ? (sorry if my english is not good).

      Hey there! Sorry for the late reply. You could get inserts (from the mountain bike world) that would dramatically decrease the chances of a flat. I have gotten a flat on the road only once and was able to patch the tube without fully removing the rear wheel or tire - a little trick.

      @rasulramazan3341, Thank you for the question. Like the ST5 I think the ST7 is an amazing bike. But to me I believe there's a point of diminishing returns. The ST3 still represents an incredible value as it is most of what an ST5 or 7 is at a much lower price point. I have the money for an ST7 but I'd rather spend it on a more expensive gravel bike or mountain bike that would be considerably lighter/better performing than its lower priced counterparts.

    2 of your 5 points have 1 and the same cause, missing (front) suspension. The adjustable suspension damping significantly improves grip performance, it's not just the tire, it's the combination. You don't have a super light racing bike, but a heavy and speed-hungry ebike. Front suspension is a must-have and not a nice-to-have item, especially on less good roads. Take your mountain bike and put on the best wide road tires ever, increase the preload, adjust the damping until you're happy on the paved road. Then lock your suspension and tell me about your crappy tires...

      Ivo, thank you for your thoughts. Much appreciated! I do agree the Stromer should have a front suspension. It is to date the stiffest, roughest bike I have owned. But... the switch to ST5 tires transformed the bike from nearly intolerable to fully livable. And the grip levels are also massively improved. I would recommend it first thing for ST3 owners. Please see my video dedicated to this switch.

      SO sorry for the massively delayed response! It's a Torx, and a big one - the same as for the front wheel. Not totally sure of the mm size.

    Have you tried Schwalbe Marathon Tour Plus? I really like them on my 2016 Stromer ST2. They’re 26 x 1.75. I adjusted all the OMNI bike setting to super low for speed, torque and agility, just slightly higher on torque. It’s like a whole new machine on assist #3.

    IoBT, I literally did LOL at this! Paid big bucks for updating the 2G display to 3G, and it connected even less. Now Stromer sent an email saying the 3G is going away (Duhh!) so I emailed my dealer...no reply. STROMER = You can buy a better bike, but you can't pay more!

      Hey Green! Yeah, I was really disappointed by the way Stromer handled that cancelation of 3G. Even for the 2018 ST3 is costs like 500 dollars to "upgrade" in order for the connectivity to work. It's unacceptable.

    Thanks for the 30psi hint! My next test ride on the ST3 will be to try out different pressures over the same lap to figure out how that affects comfort and handling. It might save me the EUR 1090 for a suspension fork that btw got several negative critics regarding its cheap mounting (fender touching the tire in tight curves). And the Kinect might be worthwhile after all....

      Hey Adri! Yes, definitely play with the tire pressures and find the level that creates a balance between comfort and efficiency, also within the context of the roads you frequent. One of the best things you can do to improve ride quality AND handling is to replace the tires with ST5 rubber. They are $99/each but WELL worth it. See my video on this if you haven't already.

      @@nvanpraag s Sure will do! I saw most of your videos. A lot of practical stuff on what it is to live with an ST3, as opposed to the marketing bla that most sites and reviews repeat. So my compliments! Don't think I saw the one on the ST5 tires, will check that out. Interesting btw to see 2021 ST5s now at the price point of the 2022 ST3 pinion. Hmmm.... I have Di2 on my Specilalized Epic and Tarmac and love thow that works. And with the Stromers rear hub motor, stress levels are relatively low on the drive train. So why pinion...? Too many options 😅

    I love that you have these videos on the ST3. I just purchased the ST3 (used to have an ST1 years ago) as my commuter vehicle in the Bay Area too. I sold off a standing scooter which just wasn't working out. Appreciate your points about the ST3 being an "intermediate vehicle". It is a misunderstood vehicle on the road. Drivers do seem surprised that you can keep up with them often or even pass them when they get stuck in traffic. Vehicles do cut you off and as much as I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt, often it seems as though they do so deliberately to assert dominance essentially. Also agree with your point about being courteous. I ride my road bike once a week to work cause it's a shorter distance and the rest of the week on the ST3. Helps to put things in perspective. Your final point about how fun it is is so true. It feels quite liberating to be able to go a long distance quickly. I wanted an e-bike because I have to go a longer distance than I can get to quickly on my steel road bike, also so I don't get there all sweaty. I've watched many of your videos. I contemplated trying out the ST5 Pirelli wheels as you recommend but opted to keep the stock wheels and simply put in a Tannus insert in the tires to prevent the chances of a flat. It's barely rained in so long but I'm wondering your thoughts on riding the ST3 in the rain. There's so little online about day to day use with the ST3.

      Hey C! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Of all of my reco's I'd say changing the tires made the biggest difference. And they are much more confidence- inspiring in the rain as well. It's the best 200 dollars you can spend on your Stromer.

    Great video. What kind of chain lube do you use after cleaning & drying the chain?

      Hey John, thank you! I use T9 on all of my bikes. The reason being is it tends to clean the chain in the process of lubing and doesn't collect as much muck as other, more viscous product. It does require re-lubing more often but the trade off is you need to fully clean the chain less often.

    Thanks mate, great video, thinking of swapping them over on my brand new ST3. For me, safety is always paramount. I live in Holland (just outside Amsterdam) thus lots of rain here. Quick question, did not see you put an inner tube in, I guess these tyres are not tubeless ???

      Hey Jae, yes, running tubes in the tires. I would definitely recommend switching as I believe they are WAY safer and the ride quality is also a huge improvement. I am able to run higher tire pressure while still maintaining the added cushion which is increasing rolling efficiency as well.

      Hey Michael! The stand I am using is an Ultimate folding work stand, although I wouldn't recommend for the Stromer. It's a GREAT stand for regular bikes but too light duty for the weight of the Stromer. Funny as I shot a quick segment for this video where I am speaking about that but I ended up editing that portion out. When using the stand I usually use it only to hold the rear wheel off the ground and not the entire weight of the bike. It's simply too unstable if I raise the bike in the air and given it was between my Ducati and my car when I was performing this tire swap it wasn't worth the risk :)

      I own a Feedback sports pro elite, which should be strong enough on paper. I did not trust the seatpost fixation to hold the weight. My dealer uses an electrical stand with two or three touch points, reducing the load on the frame. Good idea to just lift one wheel, though. Thanks!

    I just got mi Stromer ST3 (probably from the same place you got yours in Wisconsin). It came with 3 problems: the ring button (+, - and low beam) and the shifter don't work. The right brake is not recognized by the controller (the brake light does not come on). However, they seem to be very nice people and they're taking care of the issues. Did you have any problem at the beginning with yours? I love this bike.

      Rafael, thank you for sharing your experience! No, I didn't have any of those issues with the bike. I did have an issue with the crank (drive side) coming loose. It was not properly torqued at the dealer. Otherwise, yes... I love the bike too. And frankly I am overdue for creating a video about all of the things I like about the bike. I'm sure Stromer would appreciate that considering I have done a video about the 5 things I don't like :)

    I had issues with my ST3 Pirelli tires; several punctures, three in less than a year. My bikeshop, easily the best in Copenhagen, suggested I get Schwalbe Plus MTB instead, and not a problem since. Perhaps Pirelli, as a bike tire manufacturer, is not that hot? Great to see another video from you, Dutch! Keep'em coming!!

      Im not a big fan of pirelli bike tires. My st5 tires are pretty good, but i still slipped sometimes i shouldnt have. I had pirelli mtb tires too, they were garbage, no grip at all. The worst were the schwalbe st2 tires though. those bad boys in the wet guarantees an accident. I said fuck it and i tried regular mtb tires on my bike, so far i tried maxxis ardent, vittoria barzo and mezcal, currently i am running schwalbe g one allround tires. all in 57mm width. The vittorias were the best ones so far, could not complain about the schwalbes so far either. The ardents were great but too loud because of the thread pattern. I run all tires on my st5 now tubeless with inserts as well.

      @@Ropetable I bought Pirelli's when I got my Stromer and instantly regretted it terrible in the rain, 2 flats in 800 kilometers . I then put Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires on my Stromer and threw my Perilli's in the garbage where they belong and never looked back and have never gotten a flat in 4,000+ kilometers and they are great in rain or dry.

      @@webdesign6776 sounds good. The schwalbe tires that came with the original st2 were even worse, one drop of rain and you are on the floor. i slipped twice in an easy corner. Marathon plus are supposed to be indestructible, and its nice to hear they are good in the wet. I am now running schwalbe g-one allround tires tubeless with inserts, and i am happy so far. So far i have never gotten any flat with any bike or tire though despite even using the stromer for mountainbiking, so i guess im lucky.

    Gaadi tubes are quite useful for ebikes. Not sure if you’ve seen them before. No need to remove the wheel at the front or back

      Very interesting concept, however, it does not appear they make them in the size one would need for the ST3 - 27.5" x 2.4. Am I mistaken?

    So I test drove the new ST2 with suspension forks and the carbon fibre belt drive system. I was so impressed I eventually bought it. However, I took one more really quick trip with my new Stromer and I hit a bump and it powered off. The thing is this had happened to me on another previous test ride on a different but similarly equipped ST2 - the shop told me they couldn’t replicate this powering down problem and I had kinda forgotten about it. What it sounded like when I hit the bump was basically a loud “click”, then it powered off - my guess is the battery is separating from the magnetic contact points for a split second, both causing the loud click noise and the system shut off. So long story short I returned my new ST2 the next day. Basically the bumps I hit on my five short test rides were, in my opinion, pretty minor/small, and having the unit shut down twice on five short rides was to me a safety hazard. I was just wondering if anyone else has this issue?

      Hey Gustavo! Yes, I would still get the ST3. The ST5 is just too expensive (out of principle) for a super commuter e-bike in my mind. The newest ST5 variant that includes ABS brakes is interesting but is even more expensive. I will wait until that technology "trickles down" to the ST3 and other models.

    The comment about taking the battery out I would argue against. The battery door is closed and sealed off very well but only when the battery is inside. When the battery is taken out that door won't be shut and sealed but will leave an open gap. So it's best imho to keep the battery in, it won't get wet because otherwise the bike wouldn't be fit to drive in the rain anyways. When the battery is taken out there is a risk for water to get inside the housing compartment and the electronics underneath. Of course you can tape it off perhaps but then that's the same as leaving the battery in and have the door shut and sealed. Disclaimer: I also own a Stromer (and ST2S to be exact).

      Hey there! A couple of points of clarification needed. First, I am simply following Stromer's reco to remove the battery. I imagine to to reduce the chances of a short occurring while washing (which can't happen if there's no battery, hence no current). Lastly, my battery door closes the same whether there's a battery in place or not, but I imagine some Stromers could be different. Thank you for the comments and thank you for watching!

    I have some points to add: 1. Crank needs reguarly tightening 2. Bottom plate deforms, 2nd in warranty 3. The freehub is crap, makes a horrible sound.

      Hey Flip! Yeah, I have to say to have had my crank loosen twice. Using a torque wrench, I tightened the living daylights out of it and it seems to be good now. I've yet to have issues with the freehub and bottom plate. Thank you for your addition thoughts.

    for that kind of money you could buy any number of high end e bikes outfitted with top of the line motor , batteries , components tires , wheel sets , suspension, etc, and still have some money left over for some nice riding gear.

    Roflmao. WTF? Eight to ten grand and you get a bike with an uncomfortable ride that you have to spend more to correct. These are vanity bikes for those with no sense of value...

      Hey a2audrey, I appreciate your comments. I've really have enjoyed my Stromer yet I do feel I've provided a fairly objective take on the ST3 and the brand. I would agree Stromer does not make the list when talking best bang for the buck in the eBike world. Like any other expensive bike, one experiences diminishing returns above the $5k dollar mark, however it's not to say you don't get additional value for your additional money. Design, build quality, power (both motor and battery), and sophisticated electronics are just a few. At the end of the day it's about personal choice and what brand and model feels right to you. People don't a Porsche because it's the best value... they buy it because it offers a unique experience that is not replicated by a less expensive car. It's the intangibles that make the difference. And Stromer is really the Porsche of eBikes, for better and worse.

    Hello Dutchbiker. I assume you’re Dutch. Today I had a test ride on both Stromer ST3 and a Klever X Speed Pinion back to back on the same route. I was impressed by both. I like the ergonomics of the ST3. However I reached a higher top speed on the Klever. It was a great experience. Ergonomics: Stromer. Battery: Stromer Speed: Klever Maintenance: Klever

      @@nvanpraag you just need to stick a pointed paper but on the base more in height, from the back of the bike you will have better access with the hand and better central

    I installed a suspension dropper post 2 in 1 on my st5, it is more comfortable than the spring suspended seatpost, allows to drop or adjust the seatpost when descending or changing ride position with a lever. To top it all of it looks much nicer

      @@alainpuyo4796 Yes, im talking about the coast suspension dropper post. If you go for pure comfort a kinekt or bodyfloat might be slightly more comfortable, but also a bit bouncy. the dropper fits the st5 frame size, no problem at all. you will still need a bikeshop to install it, and its not that easy to install it. i would say only do it if you want the bike to feel more like a real bike, and prefer a bit stiffer seatpost that still absorbs all bumps and is aesthetically more pleasing. but if its more about just commuting, the kinekt or bodyfloat are way easier and cheaper to install and probably more comfortable in a pure pain relief way. You can think of the kinekt or bodyfloat as a thick padded saddle, and the coast suspension dropper as a thin pro saddle, that is still comfortable, and even more so for racing.
