MACV-SOG: Lone Survivor. Told by a SOG Veteran
The harrowing true story of Recon Team Alabama. May 3, 1968. In the wake of the Tet Offensive, the three North Vietnamese regiments that had attacked the Imperial Capitol of Hue, sought refuge in Laos. After eluding conventional forces MACV-SOG’s Recon Team Alabama was sent into the enemy sanctuary of Laos on a Top-Secret mission to find them. Only one man would return alive.

My father was a 1-0 on Recon Team Viper out of CCN in 67-68 and back again in 70.My Dad was and still is my hero.We went to many reunions at Ft Bragg and all his surviving team members(there were only a few)said he was the gutsiest team leader they ever had.He was quiet as the breeze at home and I grew up never hearing about anything in Vietnam until I told him at 14 that I was going to follow in his footsteps. He then told me everything I needed to know about being a SF soldier and things I would need to know to be a good guerrilla warfare expert-all things I’d learn at JOTC were half of what my Dad taught me.I spent 15 years with A/1/5 of the 5th SF Grp and I survived in large part because of what my Dad taught me.

Sure enough Dawsons War is a very good book , sometimes humorous , Lt. Dawson had a funny way of looking at the every day snafus that the Army life heaps on to a soldier, the book will keep you on the edge of your seat. Yes even reading about these brothers in arms, you get close to them. The soldiers fought bravely the general officers and politicians lost that war at the cost of many brave men. I enjoyed the book, I was sad that it ended when I got to the last page of the final chapter. Good podcast segment.

Turns out Leopold and I were in the same OCS class, Airborne class, SF Officers course, and we both served in Company E, 7th Group at the same time. He left for Vietnam a few days before I did. We knew each other by sight. When I got to the 5th Special Forces Group, I was told that he had been captured a couple of days earlier on a training patrol during the orientation course I was about to begin. I went off to SOG and don’t think I ever thought about it again. Now, of course, I’m wondering who you are and if you knew this before you posted.

This story is entirely true. I know because one year later I was John's assistant team leader on Recon Team Illinois. Someone suggested the photo of John was doctored. Totally untrue. I know because I took that photo while we were aboard a Huey en route to Dak To for Bright Light duty. John was an incredible hero, worthy of at least the Distinguished Service Cross. He received the Silver Star. Only last week (July 2024) I spoke at John's internment at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery and retold this story to his friends and family -- he had never told them. I always thought he deserved the Medal of Honor. John internalized his thoughts of that mission and seldom said anything about it. He was that kind of guy. Many years later, with lots of of persuasion, I finally got him to tell the story for my book, "SOG: The Secret Wars of Americas Commandos in Vietnam" I CANNOT THANK DAWSON ENOUGH FOR THIS VIDEO. GOD BLESS YOU AND JOHN ALLEN.

Does anyone know who I could get in touch with to find out what “missions” my grandpa took part in Laos? We found out things during his funeral that were never discussed. I’m talking black ops espionage shit. We have photos from Laos labeled “training with special forces”. There are many others, but the story behind them is unreal. Papaw served 20 years, fought all over during WW2, and then in the Korean War. He was set to retire, and they called him back with a promise of money. So, he needed up serving 20 years and some change. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks for your comment. Watched your AR-15 Basic video with interest. As you said the primary reason for malfunctions was the failure to seat the magazine properly. I won’t argue with you about that. If you know anything about MACV-SOG you know the fact that we were pretty good at our job is not up for debate. When I first arrived at SOG I was issued an M-16 and was told not to load more than 18 rounds in the magazine or it would jam up. But it still did. Fortunately, the CAR-15 quickly became available and the problems all but disappeared. I assure you none of us could tell you the muzzle velocity of our weapons or how many milk cartons they would shoot through - well, maybe Sgt. Farrell did. He knew everything. All I can tell you is that when you’re in the middle of Laos with six guys and you pull it up to shoot somebody you should be very confident it’s going to go bang. And that’s not pure BS. Thanks for watching.

That's an interesting observation. It is definitely too bright. John Plaster published that photo in the late 1990's. I don't think it's doctored. His daughter Michelle posted it with his death notice last month. I wanted to put his photo on the thumbnail. Knowing TH-cam has a problem with cigarettes, I tried to Photoshop it out. But I couldn't get his lips and hand to look natural. I can tell you that whenever I was with John he was smoking. I think the reason the cigarette looks so white is because the picture was taken with one of our crappy half-frame cameras. Thanks for your comment and for watching.
