I consider Samuel Ramey to be the heir apparent to Norman Treigle. The superlative basso profundo sound that is so amazing. I can recall being enthralled during his performances of Mephistopheles in the “party scene”. I was singing in the chorus at the time with Washington Opera, and he was just magnificent…magnificent!

Wonderful interview and discussion! I heard you several times as Don Giovanni at Covent Garden in 1983, it remains one of the great memories of my musical life, do you recall those performances? You are one of the great basses since WWII as far as I'm concerned. Thank you for all the joy your singing has given me over the years.

Riciarelli clearly has significant mental health issues given both these vignettes and her more recent appearances on Italian TV. As for Shicoff, he was always an EXCELLENT actor - as well as musician - so Cotrubas sounds quite vicious as well.

Lovely videos ! I wan’t to propose a subject , recording of operas , for example , the Lucia with Caballé and Carreras role of Raimondo , or the Norma with Joan , big Luciano and Caballé , role of Oroveso. And also the performace of Mefistòfele in Buenos Aires in 1999 with Armiliato and Gallardo-Domas , wich I attended 😊

She is a very good interviewer. And maestro has a phenomenal memory. Which is one of the most important characteristics for an opera singer.

By listening to you I've opened up and relaxed my throat to sing with ease and comfort. I'm 77yrs old and have kept on studying. Your wife has a wonderful laugh.

My favorite of his roles are Escamillo in CARMEN, and the lead in DON GIOVANNI. Also enjoyed the solo recital he performed benefitting the Arizona Opera Company...Bravo Samuel 🙂👍

In 1995, when I was 20 I went to Salzburg to see Mr. Ramey performing at the Grosses Festspielhause. The day before the concert I was visiting the city and saw Mr. Ramey, walking towards me. I approached him to say hello. He was a bit surprised that a young man had recognized him. He signed an autograph for me: “Best wishes, Sam”. I will never forget his kindness and the beautiful show he gave to us in Salzburg. God bless you, Mr. Ramey.

These are great videos! If I could make a polite request is if you could have one that focuses on Sam's wonderful singing technique. He often talks about his teachers "trout mouth" but I have not heard him say much else. Sam has a great effortless technique, like speaking to some degree and also sings opera and musicals - so it would be great if we could hear more about the "how". Thanks in advance!

Dear Ramey’s! Scott from Brooklyn, NYC here, and can’t emphasize how nourishing it is for my soul to see you both so happy and healthy looking, talking about Sam’s experiences on stage and off. I’m 47, but in the 90’s, when I was a voice student right behind the Met at LaGuardia H.S. Of the Arts, I was lucky & blessed to spend many many nights at the Met over the years enveloped in Sam’s lustrous, other-worldly voice. Sam, you were even kind enough to let a H.S. Opera wannabe come backstage and say hello a couple of times with my teacher, Anna Ext, legendary in her own right. My 15 years old son is in M. Ramey vocal range. One of his favorite scène is from Don Juan with Kurt Mole, the scène in the cemetary.

Yesterday I was wondering, what is Samuel Ramey up to. I was so glad to see you looking so well. I loved seeing you many times in London and your many recordings have played an important part of my life. The bit about recitative resonated with me. There is nothing worse than if they are lumpy and drawn out. But they can be magical in the right hands. I look forward to watching the other videos.
