Shuso Hossenshiki - Dharma Combat Ceremony at Sokoji
The Shuso Hossen-shiki Dharma Combat Ceremony) was held as part of the 90th Anniversary Commemoration Service of Sokoji Temple in San Francisco.
The Shuso Hossen-shiki is one of the most significant ceremonies in Soto Zen Buddhism. It is a formal ritual that validates the achievements of a trainee monk and recognizes their progress in the path of practice. This ceremony is deeply rooted in the traditions of Soto Zen and is an essential step for those aspiring to take on a leadership role within the monastic community.
Key Significance and Purpose
Recognition of the Shuso
The term "Shuso" refers to the leading trainee in a Zen monastery. This ceremony formally acknowledges their qualification and readiness to assume this role, symbolizing their mastery of the foundational teachings and practices.
Demonstration of Dharma Understanding
During the Shuso Hossen-shiki, the Shuso engages in a public Dharma dialogue (mondo) with senior monks and attendees, responding to challenging questions about the teachings of Buddhism. This exchange showcases the depth of their understanding and the fruits of their rigorous training.
Ceremonial Structure
The ceremony begins with the Shuso delivering a Dharma talk, offering insights into Buddhist teachings.
This is followed by the "Dharma combat," where the Shuso answers questions posed by senior monks in a dynamic and often profound dialogue.
This interaction serves as a spiritual examination, highlighting the Shuso's readiness to guide others in the practice of the Dharma.
Symbolic Importance
In Soto Zen, the Shuso Hossen-shiki is not merely a ritual but a pivotal milestone that marks the culmination of intensive training and the beginning of a deeper commitment to serving the community through the teachings of Zen.

    Remember that your metabolism is different than the other one, what was good for one of a thousand years ago does not mean that it is okay for you too, do not create shock for your system by eating the new and weak things, Zen is not the way of eating, Zen is the way of seeing the world and existence . .

    • @sokojisotozentempleofsanfr306
      @sokojisotozentempleofsanfr306 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Onions, garlic, and other foods that are energizing and stimulate sexual desire are not eaten in the training dojo because they are not necessary for the life of practice. Also, the strong smell of such foods can be a hindrance to the practice.

    What is the main difference between Sokoji and SFZC? Is it like a less "beatnick", Americanized Zen Buddhism?

    • @sokojisotozentempleofsanfr306

      We have largely retained the role of a Japanese-style temple. We do not practice monasticism like Zen centers, but most of our members visit temples to make offerings to their ancestors, to pray, and to participate in cultural and traditional events held at the temple.

    • @sokojisotozentempleofsanfr306
      @sokojisotozentempleofsanfr306 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, cake flour (light flour) refers to flour with low protein content, fine grain particles, and weak gluten properties. This is often mixed with milk and eggs to make sweets.
