I like playing 7 and 8 cmc commanders. There have been games I won without even casting them.

I don't understand the example with Indominous being hit with pongify. Why would you be drawing cards at all in this scenario? Wouldn't it already have been on the battlefield to be a valid target? An instant shouldn't be able to target indominous at all until it's already been on the battlefield and there's been a chance for a secondary player to have priority to play pongify. In which case the ETB would have already resolved? I"m sure I'm missing something but I'm not sure what.

Great video. Modality is something I'm a huge fan of, but even I underrated OTJ's spree mechanic, and I drafted that set heavily.

Whoa, slow down there champ, the rest of the class is still on chapter 1: "No, it *triggers* in your main phase but the beginning phase doesn't happen til *after* that phase I'm begging you please just read the fucking card." I run Forbid in Damia, pretty fun way to become the archenemy :P

To add to the end, EDHRec should be a touching-up step, not where you start when building a deck. Start with scryfall, paste in this search "f:commander is:spell not:vanilla id<=" then type in your commander's color identity. Then use other search terms to find the types of spells you want. Taking the few extra minutes to read every result is worth finding those hidden gems and the exact combination of cards you want. EDHRec is best used as a "Oh, is there a synergy or card I forgot?" Otherwise your deck is going to be filled with unfun, generically powerful cards- Remember: Popular cards are popular not because they're fun, but because they're powerful, and the majority of the playerbas doesn't have the stones to accept losses or the wherewithal not to take the easy route.

Honestly I just play counterspells if I like the art on the card these days.

It might just be my play style or pod, but I’ve developed a real attachment to efficient (single target) removal/control pieces. When it comes to the removal packages, I don’t tend to compromise. I would never replace an “infernal grasp” with a “ravenous chupacabra”, even if I were playing a deck that would synergize with it like a Muldrotha. The same applies to things like counterspells. Replacing a “counterspell” with a “three steps ahead” would never cross my mind. However, I think every other pillar of deck building like wipes, basic synergies, ramp, and draw could bear to lose efficiency for the sake of flexibility. Using “three steps ahead” as the continued example, I would immediately consider it if I was looking to trade out a card like “divination” or “quick study”. What was once mere card draw can now prevent a game-ending spell from resolving. (If I hold up enough mana I could do both with three steps). The trade-off is losing the efficiency of the draw rather than the removal. I’d much rather have a “counterspell” and “three steps ahead” in my hand than “three steps ahead” and “quick study” most of the time. Different pods may value the other pillars more than removal, which is probably skewing my view, as I tend to always wish there was another piece of counter magic or removal in my hand at the end of my games than draw or ramp etc. All in all, I like the idea of sacrificing efficiency for flexibility where appropriate, but there’s a reason commander players get clowned on for not playing enough removal. I’d encourage compromising other areas, like the suggestion of archdruid’s charm over worldly tutor, over making removal less efficient.

One thing that I didn't notice you talkig aboutlose focus is that it is basically uncounterable because of replicate meaning that it would need to be countered 3 times for a single card instead of countered only once, whirlwind denial is also great, not only counter triggers like defabricate, but does counter multiple triggers and if they triggered due to a spell cast, you can counter the spell AND the triggers, summary dismissal is a bit wacky as it cleans the stacks both ways instead of being onesided so you can only use on the opponent's spells and not to protect your spells, which is unfortunate, also more expensive than whirlwind denial, but it notably works around "uncounterable" spells although you can argue that discontinuity is better for that?

Negate is definitely underrated, and don't get me started on test of talents

Counterspell was literally never "too good". Its essentially a purely reactional removal spell. Counter magic in general is almost impossible to be "broken"

Halfway through the video: Just showing cards and saying they're alright by no means makes a case they're better options. When your "better" Counterspell is "just" 1 mana more expensive, it's generally no comparison. Also I cannot overstate just how terrible effects like Remand and Mana Leak are for commander. Counterspells are at their best in the late game, which is right around the time these become incredibly ineffective. Also no idea what monoW counters are doing here. It's a pity, because you do make a lot of good points here, but exaggerating the alternatives like this just completely dilutes the message!

"Both are basic lands." For me the chances of that are hilariously low. It's a 1 in however many colour pips are in my commander's identity, I only run one basic per pip. Not relevant to the argument, just funny to be reminded that oh yeah people actually put those in their decks.

I really found this video to be great and informative and this was actually a topic that I had been ruminating on recently as well! When trying to build more complex decks, I noticed that it's really easy to run out of real estate in your decks when trying to balance between the "veggies" and the cool stuff. Although these modal spells aren't the most efficient, they are certainly great at fulfilling multiple goals.

This channel is so underrated, GJ! The only downside of this video ? only 14 min long :P

Unsubstantiate definitely deserves a modal shoutout: 1U - "Return target spell or creature to its owner’s hand." Answers a commander on board or on the stack, easy casting cost, gets around "can't be countered", and gets around indestructible. You can even bounce your own creature for protection or to recycle ETB effects. And it's 15 cents. Easy include for any budget blue deck.

You always play counterspell in blue, period, no if's no buts, same reason you always play StP in white, tutors in black, etc. The fact you even posted this video shows you have absolutely no idea, 3 seconds in and you speak about leaving UU up being a telltale sign? So? That's never a reason not to play counterspells in MTG. Jesus dude...

I think you forgot [reverse the polarity] from dr who, it's a cryptic command at home. 1 U U Choose one - • Counter all other spells. • Switch each creature’s power and toughness until end of turn. • Creatures can’t be blocked this turn. The mode that makes creatures unblockable is less flexible than cryptic command tapping down your oponents' creatures (since you can only use it offensively not defensively) and you can only pick one mode, but being U cheaper and also countering everything on the stack makes is worth running alongside command, IMO (Haven't made use of the P/T switching option once but i guess if your table has an arcades defender deck it'll be a lifesaver)

It's a top deck setup spell. I only run it in my Melek deck and my Hidetsugu & Kairi deck

Mirage Phalanx makes a copy of itself when it's Soulbound. So been missing a free 4/4 each of your combats.

Bolt Bend doesn't make either the non-counter or even the honorable mentions! The requirement that you have a creature with power 4 or greater is pretty easy to achieve, especially in decks with both Red & Green, and then you have a redirect spell for just 1 red mana! Worse than Deflecting Swat, but much cheaper financially, and still does great work!

3 mana is way too much!
