    They're a root vege crop so they don't like compaction. As others have said your soil is way too heavy and was compacted in that box when you were digging out. It needs to be well fed and friable soil. You also dont need to go up that high- half that height would have done better.. Add more organics to aerate the soil.Also use indeterminate varieties and cover up with mix of soil and straw as they grow, allow about 2 inches of the plants to be above the soiline. You should only do this mounding process 3-4 times then let the potatoes grow on. Keep adding your boards as they grow up so theyre still getting the best of the sunshine. If all else fails then try this method in the box -> Ruth Stout method.

    All that lovely soil too! I shudder to think what my first serious potato growing is going to look like with mulch! It's all fun.

    In my experience, potato’s just like to grow where the seed potato was planted. They don’t like to go up the stem too much. I actually found that out the hard way but you live and you learn

    I won't call that a "failure"! No! This shows a hopeful and courageous man. But Nature's whims and fancies are beyond our control. Well, I had two failures like these. I persevered, friend! The third trial was a booming success. So, don't lose hope. And yes, your dirt looked a slight bit dry. Potatoes like it very moist (though not soggy) and they thrive in direct sunlight - buried deep, of course. I liked your enthusiasm and your hard work. Try once again. Do!

    That is sad. That is a sad harvest. What did you do wrong and what could be done better I only saw three vines as you were digging it out. So you only had three plants that lived.

    When growing potatoes, do you completely cover the green plant when adding more soil, or just enough so the leaves are just above the soil?

    • @lenty2000
      @lenty2000 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    the soil is too thick , mix sand vermiculite and pearlite and add it into the soil in batches. Grow your potatoes a layer at a time for total success. Then plant on top of it as a new later while you enjoy your previous batch

    FAIL First Attempt In Learning I would recommend a few things here: *Try using marine treated wood for the box framework *Install a water hose(with little holes 1/16th" for the 32" from top to bottom of hose) that comes from the bottom to the top of box dead center for watering the box even a soaker hose will work too. *Use potatoes with eyes on them for seeder potatoes in the (eyes planted on top of tater). *Use fertilized soil for the first two layers at least then you can use other soil further on top, but I use fertilized soil bottom to top. I commend you trying this, See if this will help you out for your next round of trying. Good luck!

    I know that potatoes are basically roots and roots need dirt, water and air. It looks to me like your wooden box may inhibit air to the roots. I'm thinking a soft sided planter pot or just old fashioned mounds. Awesome job though, lessons Learned. God Bless

    Thanks foor sharing your failure!! From youtubers "Hollis & Nancy's Homstead" i heard that this potato-tower-growing-thing only works with ' indetermined(seed)potatoes' . Check his explanation here: th-cam.com/video/n9s4feiZqLo/w-d-xo.html . i just see that you posted this some years ago ... and of course i don't know if you tried a third time. With Hollis;s explanation you want to try again.. for sure. Succes :)
