I learned Bislama fluently by living in Vanuatu. I was with someone from France, he didnt speak English and I didnt speak French so we both had to double down and learn Bislama. It was the only way we could communicate.

Bro! Be patient! 1,000 hours is nothing in the grand scheme of language acquisition, especially for a distant language. It’s said English speakers need 1,500 hours of listening comprehensible input. For Chinese, you need at least double of that - 3,000 hours. Don’t give up!

7 minutes in and honestly I hate this video already. Fellow polyglot speaking 5 languages; 4 learned as an adult. The foundational argument is we should learn like a baby does. Step 1: watch TH-cam videos to learn about key structural elements of a language (just like a baby would do???). First, adults learn language WAY faster than babies. It’s possible to become fluent in 6 months. From the age of two, it takes a kid about 3 years. Second, babies don’t study textbooks because THEY CANNOT. Use all the resources. Switch it up a lot. Use a teacher. Use books. Definitely speak. Definitely get comprehensible input. Use flash cards. Read newspapers. Read books. Watch TV. Do it all. Research how governments quickly train their citizens in language to be spies, military, whatever. This guy found a way for himself. Good for him. His way is NOT the proven way that works for most people.

I understand your emotion, but can't agree your opinion at 2:18. Not specific to mandarin, This is a common difficulty for everyone learning their second language. Every language has special pronunciation, usage of words, and culture behind it. Simply saying no Chinese can understand you is a bit conceited. When Chinese people saying 你的发音很标准！, I don't think they are comforting you, but express their real feeling. Your pronunciation is indeed more standard compared to many non-native mandarin speakers.

Thank you, brother. I learned French school and I am trying to learn Spanish in some more organic form. I did sign up for an online course to become more accountable. Luckily, I live in SoCal, and many people speak Spanish to each other but not to me. It helps a bit but not enough. Also teasing ("cheeky") is context dependent in our own native languages. I guess it's better to be safe, but I'd rather have people know that's part of how I express myself, not too serious and always playing. I would have made me giggle had you called me that. It's true.

Don't be upset. This chinese language is no need you learn when you are not for interest. If you are for make money in china, i think you would waste your time. If you are loving this chinese culture. I hope you can do it. I don't know you learn chinese for what goals? However , that native speaker never waste the time for their chinese learners. Because they are very busy in their daily life. The achieve your goal that is attend the chinese school or online class to find your teacher. They will fix your accent and daily conversation. Hi, coming from your last video. At the end of the day people prioritize the information of the message over the way you convey or express that message. People have very different pronunciations and accents and It's very hard to get used to everyone, but trust me, people really appreciate the fact that you can actually pronounce in a standard northern mandarin accent, and even tho you cant understand them, they really do understand you because that's the standard accent for newscasters and officials that you would see at the TV for example.

Don't feel so down, especially with the fact that you got so good alredy with 1.5 years. Even for us (chinese ppl) we need subtitles while we watch something, because the language is highly contextual. Trust me, even for native speakers, you would need sometime to adjust your brain for the simple fact that any person outside of a 100km of you is going to have some kind of different accent/vocabulary/dialect that youre not accustomed. Learning chinese is a constant challenge and process for native speaker. At the end of the day what people value the most is to be able to send the message, and it doesnt matter how choppy the process might be, trust me 😂😂😂

做了很多输入，但没字幕的话，在现实生活中只能听得懂一些简单句子，然后很多音都相似，识别不出来。 感觉我现在练英语听力的状态也差不多😂。 真实的语速真得反应不过来，很多连词介词只能靠脑补，但自己又反应不过来，然后同一个单词在不同语境下的变音也很多，但我输入的比你少吧。 没反馈确实很绝望，怎么说呢，我现在就是干完就拉倒，学个20m就结束😂 而中文作为我的母语，确实很自然，但是呢，我感觉也和时间有关，从小用太多了，大脑自己吸收了。 加油吧，真不行，休息一段时间也行。 感觉学习语言，除了方法和努力，心态也很重要

You need to speak more with Chinese people and stick to Mandarin, because almost all young Chinese people can speak Mandarin. it is a bear; i've been at it off and on for years. only lately I feel like my listening is making progress. the more I do it the better I get- but it's slow. if you can understand something with subtitles, you have to come back to it multiple times and without subs. keep listening to podcasts too. it's gonna be a thousand more hours of just listening on top of whatever else you're doing. (for me too). And as for Chinese all sounding the same- yeah, it's maybe the most homophonic language on earth. but- it comes in lexical chunks, set ways of phrasing things. In context in can be parsed. when you break it down into smaller and smaller pieces it becomes incomprehensible. it is irritating, but it can be overcome. sometimes I can hear three or four minutes of conversation and understand almost everything- it's thrilling. (then I understand almost nothing in the next couple minutes, just to keep me humble). Anyway- if you can complain about how bad your chinese is for 7 minutes, even if haltingly, then it's pretty clear you're making progress. it's just a much longer road than. you anticipated. you are now becoming aware of exactly how much there is you don't know. i've been there too... 你堅持下去，別放棄。持之以恆，每天背字，每天模擬母語者的說法，每天反覆看你喜歡的影片，看到你看膩了。我們倆個，不管多麼難，一年後會突飛猛進！

It's totally normal to feel this way when you're learning a language from a completely different language family. It takes extra time and effort, but you've already come so far! Just keep at it for another 3,000 hours, and you'll reach your language goals.

So when you talk to the locals, you can't understand the words/syllables acousticly? Or do you actually hear and understand the syllables, but can't grasp the meaning? If so, then training your listening skills won't help, of course.

In China, there is a reason why most of the tv programs have subtitles, because Chinese have hearing problems too. As a Chinese, in my childhood, I have much trouble watching tv series (no subs) featuring Beijing accent to some extent that I can only understand probably 20% of them. So don't take this as comfort but I think you are getting there, learning curve is not linear.

我来尝试解释一下吧，因为首先我认为中文是一门非常不严谨的语言，当然每种语言都有它不严谨的地方，比如日语口语当中经常会省略掉助词或者主语。但是中文有一个很独特的地方，它的语序非常不严谨，并且有许多需要意会的表达，比如我打死你和我打不死你，其实是一个意思。我觉得你的困扰来自于对中文文化的不熟悉，毕竟你没有真正地融入中国社会，每天沉浸式地去与当地人交流，所以说你学习的中文，更像是为了应付考试的中文，因为考试中语言都会比较严谨和正确。但是在中文的语境中，当地人会说一些看起来其实是不符合语法规则的表达，甚至是创造一些从字面上根本无法理解的词语，有些甚至对于中国人来说都无法理解的词语。所以说你的困扰我是十分理解的，想要解决这个问题，要么就在你们国家当地多结识中国朋友，要么就亲自来到中国生活一段时间，你的问题自然就会被解决。

I've been listening to English (not listening but watching videos) for about 6 years, but there are still like 50% of things I don't understand when I'm watching American Tv shows like The Suits without subtitles. It's normal. i can speak English with native speakers without trouble, and I can tell my own stories in English, I can share my opinions on different topics but I got to say, it's way impossible to understand everything in English given the fact that I've spent so much time putting sounds into my brain. Sometimes it's not the method that's not working, it's your mindset that goes another way.
