This is where my love affair with trains and the Boston & Maine began. My parents took me to Hayes Shoe Store just feet from the Fitchburg Main for my first pair of shoes when I was just a year old. A freight train stormed past the store and I began crying hysterically with fright (Maybe that’s why the memories of Guilford & Pan Am still bring me to tears) Stephen Demboske
If I were to grow up with the B&M,and see it through all the lean times, then be made into a respectable company by the late Alan Dustin, only to be trashed by Springfield Terminal, and Guilford, and/or PAN AM, I would cry also. How can there be a New England, without the B&M???
When I was little and went into Hays’ shoe store (with the creaky floors and great leathery smell) and the train just outside would shake the building, it was the scariest and coolest thing to me
Very cool, I grew up on edgel rd in Framingham and the Framingham and Lowell tracks ran just behind my house in the late 80s. It’s a big reason why I love trains so much till this day.
When I went to work there was BL-1 and LB-2 providing service between the Boston Freight Terminal and Lowell and the New Haven had men working yard switchers in Lowell. Later there was service between Providence and Lowell with PL-2 and LP-1.
I enjoyed my first ever locomotive cab ride in west concord on a locomotive across the diamond. Once across, I had to get off. But it was a gp 9 still in new haven colors in 1982

Another victim of the changing economy, the shippers, and Guilford.
