Woah!
Change the oil and place a new NGK spark plug before anything else.. Good thing you did not crack your head or any bone..
Good advice!
Saw that bike was gonna get it but got a better deal on a jr80 wish the silencer didn’t sell on your though I would’ve bought it mine didn’t come with one and I can’t find one lol
It was a home made silencer but yeah, better than nothing!
@@RustyPhoenixMotors I might have to make one then I guess I also can’t find plastics which sucks but I just plan on getting the drz110 gas tank and plastics and making them work
Who do you have to talk about buying some of these vintage dirt bikes
Me! Lots of those bikes are sold. I still have several left though. What are you looking for?

I have three of the DS80,good fun for all.
Yeah I was hoping to ride it, looks like fun! Probably a little more tame than my CR80. 🤣
@@RustyPhoenixMotors yes only 7hp but can still hurt yourself
The smaller the bike, the more fun they are. They are ALSO more dangerous... ;D
Lol. It doesn’t look terrible… I’ve read a lot of guys don’t like the high fender because it’s not as effective as the low fender, but it looks soooo much better. What’s your thoughts?
I have always liked the look of low fenders more. It depends on the bike. I've seen a couple people do "half" fenders. They use the back half of the low and the front half of the high. I guess do whatever you like best!
This is awesome advice. Wouldn't a heat gun have the same effect as a blow torch? I mean, you said the object is to get the metal warm(ish). A heat gun would certainly do that, no?
Yep! I just like fire. 😁
@@RustyPhoenixMotors It's a guy thing, LOL. I employed said heat gun to excellent effect this afternoon. The paint laid down very nicely. I guess it likes a warm metal surface that isn't filled with contaminants. Neighbor gave me the stink eye watching me (he owns a German vintage auto repair shop and is a body man by trade) until I explained to him why, and emailed the link to this video to him. So, you're teaching the pros now, LOL. Awesome vid, and thank you again for posting it.
@@shopwornbear1171 🤣awesome, thanks!
Good video I found it informative as a guy trying to achieve similar results on the fly and not sure where to start.
Thanks!
That’s not a stock end pipe
Yeah I'm pretty sure it was home made. They did a fervent job on it though.
takes me back! thanks.
You're welcome!
I owned a 1975 Honda Z50 Mini Trail. I rode the thing into the ground. Many happy miles and smiles. 😊❤
You should go see the first video I did on this one... I've never seen a bike so abused as this one! They still go forever.

You repainted it. That aint restoration.
There's a little more than paint going on there...

hi thank you for sharing, any idea where i can find new condition briggs stickers ? thanks
I believe I found this one on Ebay. It was just a hair bigger than the original but it was very close, I'm happy with it.
@@RustyPhoenixMotors ok thank you for the reply
Haha yep them bloody z50 wheels
Right!? People say they're so easy to take apart. I've never had them come off easy... Dreading doing the tires on the TRX70.
Might help if you got someone who can actually ride the bike...
lol, You volunteering?

Great work brother, I happened upon one of these beauties, Briggs & Stratton engines. I'm going to sell this one.
Thanks! They are really cool engines.
I'm working on one right now How did you get the flywheel off?
If I don't have a puller, my trick is to use a little heat, a little PB Blaster, and a soft dead blow (shot filled) hammer. They can be really tricky. Pounding on a flywheel is never a good idea- it can cause cracks and the flywheel can have a nasty come-apart when running if it has any cracks in it.
@@RustyPhoenixMotors Thanks man, got it off!
Glad to hear it! While you're in there, the date code should be stamped on the back of the flywheel. 2 numbers. Mine was 48- for 1948. Kinda fun to see!
@@RustyPhoenixMotors Yes that is neat to see. This engine is dated 1950, 8 yrs older then I am!
Found a 1981 in 2000, was supposed to be seized, but turned out to be the stator rusted to the rotor. Had 1100 km and started first kick after a carb clean. Same bike as this, but in immaculate condition, had points not CDI, was used only in 1981 and was probably cheaper at CDM $ 200 (US $140) Sold for significantly higher 15 years later.
Great story! Love hearing about finds like this.
Maybe a crack in the reed valve ! Also those bikes like a 50:1 gas , oil ratio ! Motorex !
Yep, I run 50:1 in all my 2 strokes. I kinda like the smell of Klotz though... :D
No compression, No sale.
I'm pretty handy and don't mind boring / honing cylinders and putting in new piston / rings... And yes, I knew it had low compression. I'm fine with that. What's not cool is the fact that the dude said it had been sitting for a while, when it was obviously just taken apart. Again, the price was such that I would have bought it anyways.
I just bought one of these yesterday.. It's the same year, where you putting up parts? Mine's missing a few things..
Yes, that was the plan. I have a couple people that claim they're interested in the whole thing, so I want to give them a day or two but if I don't hear anything soon, parts will be up for grabs. What are you looking for?
Kickstart lever, plastics, electrical switches and maybe the harness/lights.@@RustyPhoenixMotors
Hey, I've started parting this out. Had a few local people buy stuff (mostly plastics) but still have electrical stuff and kickstarter. Interested? email me at rustyphoenixmotors@yahoo.com
Some people suck. I bought a Jonda 200x from a shop one day...wasn't allowed to 'test ride' it other than in the parking lot....my froend and I got it home and I jumped it out the back of my pickup, hit the ground rolling and took off and by the time I shifted into 3rd it was obvious why I wasn't allowed to really test it out...the clutch was gone. I called the guy at the shop back and asked if he new about it and he started out with " used bike, no warranty, no return"...I told him I figured that he had known...I told him he was going to order me a clutch and the cover tool for free and he started tapping again and I just calmly stopped him and reminded him that he had three 8x10" windows on the front of his shop and if I wasn't gonna be satisfied I'd just "return" the bike at night thru one of those windows. Suddenly he was on board with supplying the parts. He sucks too.
Jeeeez, that's messed up! To be fair, the price on this bike was great even with a blown motor. I would have bought it anyway. Not sure why the guy felt he had to lie about it's condition.
They lie to pass on the Problems to someone else , they call it to "Pass the buck " sadly 🙄😮😮😮😮😮😮😁 Hope your boy is Patient 😮😮😮😮
He's got a Z50 to ride for a while yet (most of my recent vids are of the build), but yeah... *sigh*
I have the same one great motorcycle. We're sitting for a couple months one Kick start up
This one isn't quite there yet... Takes a few kicks but then I don't hardly ever ride it, it's mostly just garage art.
Is it fair to ask how you went about painting it? It looked like you did some preheating and then used a matte spray paint for the block and a normal gloss spray technique for the shroud. I grew up preparing small Briggs but have never done a restoration until now. Not sure what types of paints to use.
Yes! I *LOVE* rattle cans. There are some easy ways to get a little better finish- my hack is to heat the surface just a little. Takes a little practice to get it just right. I go over my painting "cheat codes" in this video: th-cam.com/video/bquxP3q4BwM/w-d-xo.html
@@RustyPhoenixMotors just the video I needed, thanks!
Glad to hear it. Let me know how it turns out!
Best bike ever I will never get rid of mine So jealous
They're great, but I'm still partial to my Honda's. That said, the one and only bike I've ever bought brand new is a Yamaha!
Man, that's quite a difference! Suttle, and CLEAN!
Thanks!
Very cool, seems like it would come in handy!
Very. Keeps all kinds of dust and fumes out of the air!
Man, that is an incredible view! Looks like fun.
It was!
Dang that thing was BEAT! Love old farm bikes, they always get trashed. Turned out great!
Thanks!
I had the '82 KTM 495 MXC just like yours and man that bike was a beast . Crack the throttle open in 4th or 5th gear at 3/4 and the front end would be clawing at the sky and shooting a roostertail with rocks and dirt flying all over the place . No one wanted to ride around me when I rode that bike . I sure miss it . Wish I never sold it ! Thank you for the video . When you get it dialed in you will see what I mean . Enjoy !!! 😊
They are a blast! Really need to did it back out and do some more with it.
People afraid of big bores it’s not like you have to hold it wide open everywhere you go lol.
Exactly. But... they do go from 0 to psycho *real* quick! 😅
After a year, how has it held up? I'm about to fabricate a tank for a motorcycle and I'm looking for a good way to seal it.
It seems to hold up well. I've used this stuff several times on several different bikes and I really like it. This little Z50 hasn't seen a lot of use yet, I need to look at the chinese carb. Haven't been able to get it to run quite like it should yet.
@@RustyPhoenixMotors -- That's great. Thanks!
I dig the gold on the motor too!
Thanks!
Good job Dad! Something you will both remember forever.
this is sick!!
Thanks!
I was just given 2 350 a 74&78 both have good compression sweet barn find in excited.
You'll love them! My favorite bikes are the '76-'78 XL350's.
that old gas should've been drained out and throwed away when it sets 4 a long time it gets bad no good 😮😮 and the oil.should been changed as well once motor oil gets dirty it has done all its going 2 do 😮😮 yes alot of other engines did use oilers and grease cup the grease cups were 4 the main bearings and the oil cups was 4 the other moving parts U still had 2 grease and oil the engines /that engine is suppose 2 coast long U should left 👈 😊 it where it was set at on the governor they only run at 6OO RPM 😊😊 OMG 11 18 2O23
🤣
Did you see his first attempt?
Are you interested in selling this XT500? I’m looking to find one and am very interested if you are.
Yep, $2,600, clean Utah title.
@@RustyPhoenixMotors I’m definitely interested. I watched your videos, but can you tell me anything more about the oil burning and overall running condition of the bike?
The oil burning cleaned up after a few minutes of running. It did it again after it sat for a couple of months- usually a symptom of dried out valve stem seals. Mostly just annoying, and only noticeable if the bike has sat for a while before starting. Seems to run well, although will likely need a carb clean and a tuneup. Feel free to email me at rustyphoenixmotors@yahoo.com and I can send you pictures or answer more questions. Thanks!
Back in highschool i had an agg class and part of our grade was rebuilding small engines, went out the farm and grandpa gave me one of these to take into school and rebuild. Shoulda seen my teacher's face when i came in with it 🤣 I got it running again and still have it. Haven't started it in years but i bet it'll fire up if I messed with it.
That's way cool!
I had the 250 nice bike
I've had several 250's as well. My favorite was the '76 Centerport. There's just something about blue motorcycles!
