Former member of the Greek parliament and Minister of Finance Yanis Varoufakis joins host Chris Hedges on this episode of The Chris Hedges Report to explain how capitalism is dead and a new form of capital, the title of his new book, “Technofeudalism,” has arisen and holds power akin to the feudal lords of medieval times.

Fascinating. Makes a good case for self reliance, especially in cultivating your passions outside of the cloud matrix. It requires heavy curation of one’s life experiences, consumer habits and social media feeds. In these times I’ve found some relief in taking the long view of feudalistic cycles across human evolution. That and a strong sense, as a retired educator and non-Luddite (constantly on a tech learning curve), I believe we have made strides in social justice by keeping activism alive through technology. I would’ve liked to hear more from Chris’s and Yanis on what Trump is bringing (or thinks he’s bringing) to the table, in the midst of all of this chaos, economic and otherwise. It feels dangerous. Overall, an illuminating interview. Thank you.

WEB Dubois, Black Reconstruction in America 1860-1880, published in 1935: (italics added by me) "...a new super-dictatorship rose. The dictatorship of property... This was not a petty bourgeois development, following the overthrow of of agrarian feudalism in the South. It was, on the contrary, *a new feudalism based on monopoly*- but not monopoly of the agricultural possibilities of the land so much as of its wealth in raw material, in copper, iron, oil, and coal, *particularly monopoly of the transportation of these commodities* on new public iron roads privately sequestered, and finally, of the manufacture of goods by new machines and privileged technique. *This new feudalism* was destined to crush the small capitalist as ruthlessly as it controlled labor, and even before the panic of 1873 it was beginning to consolidate its power. The copper of Michigan, the coal, steel and oil of Pennsylvania, came under the control, and at the same time the bankers and financiers began to bend the manufacturers and the railroads to their will by their monopoly of investment capital and direction of its distribution. ... Great corporations, through control of new capital, began to establish a super-government. ...they made treaty with the petty bourgeoisie by guarantying them reasonable and certain income from their investments, while they gradually deprived them of real control in industry. And finally, they made treaty with labor by dealing with it as a powerful, determined unit and dividing it up into skilled union labor, with which the new industry shared profit in the shape of a higher wage and other privileges, and a great reservoir of common and foreign labor which it kept at work at low wages with the threat of starvation and with police control."

The lack of Peace and Reconciliation across the board after WW2 has created this situation. Many Jews should have been able to go back home to countries where they were from. Soviets lost 25 million people for God sakes. The perpetrators are the wealthy and and the few. The rest are peace loving people who could care less about your religion.

Good vs evil is not a helpful model of the human predicament. Morality is not real. It comes from developing language wherein we described to each other what we preferred. Later we invented "gods" to represent the values emerging from our described preferences. Good vs evil modeling only preserves the madness.

Great interview, as usual. It would have been good, however, to have also discussed with Yanis Varoufakis his Appendix I on 'The Political Economy of Technofeudalism' (which he wrote for his 'Marxist friends') as this explains (quite correctly, in my view) how technofeudalism rests on the basis of capitalism itself - as outlined by him in terms of Marx's critique of political economy. For, as Yanis Varoufakis clearly shows, technofeudalism is a mode of production which not only arises out of capitalism but also is something which cannot exist without it. Keep up the great work!!!

When you choose between ,cooperation or competition,in world of materialism, and capital, none of both works , it’s just because when you compete,it’s limitless desire, with limited resources, and for majority materialistic ideology, where the successful is who own bigger capital or property, and that means no opportunist every Occasion raises ,use anybody you can to claim up there, GREED .and when you cooperate in the same conditions we mentioned you end up with cartels like you said, human civilization always end up drowning in its own misery!! If you don’t believe!! You are doomed by yourself,as person or as nation. Because no laws can be made to guarantee morality, it seems we can’t save ourselves from ourselves.

This was a brilliant discussion and just what I needed to hear. After listening to you talk about unions Chris and the need for workers to collectively push back, I was wondering what this would even look like given the level of automation occurring that surely must increasingly diminish actual worker numbers and push-back potential. I am old enough to remember when we thought automation would liberate people and create more time for quality of life. Of course, it didn't happen that way. As a 'progressive' Australian, Yanis is someone I've followed for some years. It was fantastic to see him on your show and listen to your always thought provoking and information rich discussion. In the heart of the earth, a treasure sleeps, Fossil fuels, like secrets, buried deep. Once abundant, now they wane, Their scarcity, humanity's bane. Silent whispers of ancient days, Burned for light, heat, and the engine's blaze. But now the wells grow dry and tired, While the world's demand has not retired. The sun and wind, we harness true, Yet their power seems but a meager due. The rivers run, the turbines turn, But the energy gap continues to yearn. Beneath our feet, the coal beds thin, Oil wells echo, an empty din. Gas fields falter, their bounty spent, Leaving us in energy lament. Renewables rise, with promise bright, Yet struggle to match the fossil's might. For the populations ever swell, In energy needs, we're caught in a spell. As the sun sets on the fossil age, We face a turning, unwritten page. Can we adapt, will we find a way, To power the world by the break of day? A question hangs in the smoky air, A challenge for all, to do their share. To innovate, conserve, and care, For the energy future we all share. -GPT4

Varoufakis is obviously wrong. Equality and 'living paycheck to paycheck' is very specifically socialism (hint: China is very specifically many things except purely socialist). What killed capitalism was Joseph Stalin's majik machine (corporatism), curtesy of a certain wizard (Oz, the great and Hoover). BTW Stalin openly stated this at the ECC many years later. The predicted crisis was based on falling birth rates and consumption (perpetual motion) forming a fatal parallax. Why speculate over established facts? These things are well documented. Ironically, the Soviet solution was to simply "pick a known failed system and stick with it." It was 'reflection' and self-honesty that healed the 'federation.' Correct policy followed later.

America is not primarily the oligarchy that everyone on the left has fallen into the habit of calling it. It is primarily a corporatocracy but for some reason, no one seems comfortable with this word. You can have oligarchy - rule by a small number of wealthy individuals - independent of corporate interests. Meanwhile, a corporatocracy will always be associated with wealthy and influential individuals who act for corporate interests and may temporarily head them up. But It is their corporations that have captured the US political class. Wealthy individuals who have influence and prominence will be around under any system.
