Scallydandling about the books
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 6 ก.ย. 2012
I'm Ros. Reading is a second life that runs alongside my real life. I live in Sussex on the south coast of England but I like to range about a bit in what I read. I enjoy booktube because it is a way to share the world of books with other enthusiastic readers.

I read some great nonfiction in 2024. These are the books that have stuck with me most.
Honourable mentions:
The Dam by David Almond and Levi Pinfold

Delightful historical fiction - The Trouble with Mrs Montgomery Hurst #montgomeryhurst
Since you like memoirs and enjoyed The Tale of Genji, perhaps it would be a good idea to read the Diary of Lady Murasaki or the 'zuihitsu' The Pillow Book by Sei Shonagon (zuihitsu is translated as 'essay' but it is a Japanese genre meaning 'let the pen run' so it combines, from a Western perspective, essay, chronicle, memoir, lists)
I appreciate hearing your reflections on the kinds of books that rose to the top of your reading. Reminders to seize the day: that’s such a good thing! Lots of people are praising Flat Place and I expect that I will too, when I give it a proper chance. I didn’t get far into it before realizing that I wasn’t in the right mood at the time. I am in the mood for a picture book now, so I have requested a copy of Almond’s Dam. I will report back!
Still hoping to read Eve and A Flat Place. Thanks for the reminder.
@@BookishTexan Eve really shifted my understanding.
Congrats on your 5 years. What a great decision you made!! I am so thankful for our great friendship through this platform ❤❤ Even though we say we will be flexible, we still have more plans than most of our friends, at least I do 🤣 I am planning to join the Reading the Globe for six books 😊
@@BernasBookishAdventures we are both planners 😀
A Flat Place was my #1 of the year! I also read and liked Strong Female Character. I need to read the rest, but luckily, already own most of them :)
@@RovingReader A Flat Place was oddly engaging somehow. I think you would like Eve.
Happy fifth birthday! What does it feel like the second time round?
@@heathereads pretty good thanks. But then I don't remember the first much. Happy new year. I am rereading Middlemarch at the moment by the way.
My favorite was Seven Wonders of the World by Bettany Hughes.
@@sherrirabinowitz4618 I love her documentary series on TV.
@@scallydandlingaboutthebooks I do too, she is my favorite Historian. I just got her Helen of Troy book with a gift card from a friend.
@@scallydandlingaboutthebooks I love them too. We have them on PBS and Britbox, I enjoy them a lot.
Very interesting top 5! I also enjoyed I Am I Am I Am and Thunderclap..Eve has been on my TBR for a number of months and you're reminding me why!
@@readandre-read I think you would enjoy Eve.
I have two more for you. The Sinner by Tess Gerritsen is about nuns and I'm re-reading it and Lying Awake by Mark Salzman is a great novella about an enclosed order of nuns.
@@deesouthall7219 I'll look those up!
I've often seen Andrew Miller's books on the library shelves and been intrigued, but you've really convinced me I need to pick this up soon!
@@JentheLibrarianreads I really enjoyed it as you can gather.
Excellent. Thank you for reviewing this.
@@Abuamina001 thank you for watching.
@@scallydandlingaboutthebooks No worries. Have you perchance read "Hadji Murat" by Leo Tolstoy or "Death and the Dervish" by Mesa Selimovic ? Both gems.
@Abuamina001 I read Hadji Murat but many years ago. Thanks for the recommendation of Death and the Dervish. I looked it up and I think you are right, it is one I would find rewarding to read.
Fern Brady’s book made it into my top nonfiction as well. Not one from this year, but I really I read a book about the gender data gap a few years ago called Invisible Women which would sounds like it would compliment Eve. That is now going on my wish list.
@@spreadbookjoy yes I read that and thought of it at times when reading Eve.
I read at least 1 autobiography in 2024, but only 5 nonfiction books altogether. I hit dnf on another and wish I had on 1 of the 5 I finished. My overall favorite nonfiction of the year though would have to either be Willie Nelson's "My Life: It's A Long Story", Anne Bradford's and Barrie Robertson's "Midland Ghosts And Hauntings", or Temple Grandin's "Thinking In Pictures". Those last 2 I fully intend to reread in future.
@@harmonyln7 I must read something by Temple Grandin one day.
Probably my favourite two were. 'Metaphysical Animals' by Clare Mac Haill and Rachael Wiseman, about the philosophical movement of: Iris Murdoch, Philippa Foot, Elizabeth Anscombe, and Mary Midgley. One I read only because I thought it might be suitable for a friend as a gift, it was, I bought another copy for her - 'Cold Kitchen' by Caroline Eden, she's an excellent travel/food writer, very evocative.
@@clarepotter7584 group biographies are so rewarding when they work. Cold Kitchen is a new one on me.
@@scallydandlingaboutthebooks I listened to the audio, who knew I needed to know about the Uzbek winter melon harvest? Or the mother of pearl spoon traditionally used to serve Turkish hosaf.
That's a great top 5. I have Thunderclap and Eve on my list to read.
I have them on my list too!
@@ariannefowler455 both definitely worth your time.

@@thaiziono96 thank you for your kind words and I am so glad you are going to take part in Reading the Globe.
Congratulations on your anniversary Ros! Something made of wood is a traditional choice of gift to mark a fifth anniversary… and books are made from trees… so I wish you many books! My 3rd anniversary was at the end of December-leather is traditional for that. But I wasn’t thinking of booktube when I bought myself a new wallet 2 weeks ago. Your edition of Tale of Genji looks longer than the one I had. I didn't read as much because the holiday kept me busy, but I finished a few: The Marvelous Land of Oz, Dragonshadow, and The Passage to India. I did start a handful of books that I didn't finish, but will continue. Touch Me Not, Savage Detectives, Shogun, and The Pillow Book (this one also is about court life in Japan).
@@jackiesliterarycorner is that The Pillow Book written in the same era as Genji? I'll be interested to hear how you find reading that.

Congratulations to your 5th anniversary, Ros! Can't remember booktube without you! Just received Clean from the library and I'm very curious about it. Reading it in the German translation, because it doesn't make sense to me to read a book from a language that is not my native one in another one that isn't mine either.
@ameliareads589 ah you are kind. Definitely makes sense to read the German translation of Clean. I think there may be some people reading it in the original Spanish too.

If you cannot tolerate any type of animal abuse, like myself you may want to reconsider, “Clean”.
@@Sunshinysky432 thanks for the warning. Actually, although I am horrified by animal abuse in real life, I expect fiction to show human behaviour good and bad so I don't avoid books that depict it. If it feels it is used gratuitously I will be disappointed though.
Hey Roz, me and my sister are having a read a book a week challenge, where we have to read at least 1 book per week throughout the year. She's starting off with the Harry Potter series and I've got a couple of things left from 2024 to finish and I started the audiobook of '"Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban", since I've read the physical versions already. I plan to read the Temperence Brennon series as well as continue with the Anne Of Green Gables series among other things. I do like a bit of spontaneous reading, but I'm notorious for planning in advance, so by the time I get round to doing whatever I planned I end up going and reading something random. In 2024, mainly thanks to some stuff being threatened with the recycle bin, I took a deep dive into Anna Jacobs' historical fiction. I've also chosen "The Black Loch" inPeter May, which I've been looking forward to reading since before it came out, so I chose it for when it's my turn to choose something for an in person Scottish crime fiction book group.
@@harmonyln7 reading in tandem with your sister sounds good. Will you try to pick the same book sometimes. I love getting to share books with Tilly my daughter. My sisters would be no good for that!

@@sherrirabinowitz4618 great. Not Pygmalion as I buddyread that with Tilly before but it could be fun to read a Christie more attentively and see how she does it. I see you have just started a channel yourself 😃
@@scallydandlingaboutthebooks Sure, I love Christie. I have read most but not all of her books. I have read all the main detectives. I have some stand alones and three of the Mary Westmacott's. Agatha is great for a re-read, so I am open to any of her books. Yes, I decided to try and see how it goes. I have not had any experience in video, all the shows I have done have been audio only, so it is a very new thing for me.😊
@@sherrirabinowitz4618 I have read a fair few over the years but haven't kept track until recently so sometimes I'm not sure if I have read one or not. And then if one feels familiar I wonder to myself if that's because I have seen a TV adaptation! One that falls in this category is The Murder of Roger Aykroyd and as it is considered one of her very best I'd like to read it to be sure and with a Christie enthusiast would be perfect. But if that will be dull for you I am open to other suggestions for sure.
@@scallydandlingaboutthebooks I understand completely it happened to me with Cards on the Table, I thought I had read it then I was reading Laura Thompson's book on Agatha Christie and she described it, and I realized I only saw the adaption. That is easy enough, we all watch them more then we read them, A problem with Roger Aykroyd, I am reading it right now for the Shedunnit Book Club, our due date is Jan 8th. Great to hear about your reading plans for 2025! I’m trying to be a bit more structured with my reading this year and have joined a few more reading groups, I’m very much a mood reader and hope I’ve still left myself enough reading room for that, time will tell. I’ve signed up as a booktube judge for the first time too, which should be fun!
Thank you. I can over plan my reading and lose the mood element. Judging the BookTube Prize is fascinating but does absorb a lot of reading time. I will try to only do a couple of rounds this year. I hope you find it rewarding too.
Great plans! The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat is a book I read years ago and may re-read for Gareth's project. Time for spontaneity is crucial. This year is going to be the year of less for me so that I have more wiggle room for random reads. I wish you a wonderful year of reading ahead!

What a month you've had, Ros. I was particularly interested in hearing you speak about writers' first novels--Woolf's, Dickens', and Pineiro's firsts. I am planning to read Pickwick Papers this year--one I've never read. I also really loved your video with Tilly on T.J. Klune. It's such a delight to hear you discussing books together. I have T.J. @@BookChatWithPat8668 Woolf's was the most perfectly formed. She revised it several times before publication. But Pickwick is glorious in its imperfection. Because it was serialised one can see how Dickens started by writing linked sketches and gradually shifted to making them instalments in a novel. And yes getting to know you virtually has been one of 2024's happy developments.
