    I think Raisin in the Sun is a great book. I read both the book and play version, just amazing. Thank you Ros, I am so enjoying buddy reading A Murder is Announced with you. (I wouldn't call myself an expert just a fan. I read all the Poirot's, Miss Marple's, Tommy and Tuppence, Battle's and Harley Quin's. I still have some stand alones to read.) I think it is a wonderful mystery with fun characters and a look at the transition of the UK from after WW2 to the 50's, they are entering the modern world and their reactions to it are very interesting.

    As an actor I prefer watching to reading plays, but I did re-read my book of Oscar Wilde plays and Noel Coward plays. I love both Wilde and Coward and to read their plays are a joy. I read the poems of Emily Bronte, (I did read them in College but I didn't remember them.) I read Virginia Woolf's poems, and that is it this year, I want to read some more of Elizabeth Barrett Browning this year. I am going to do a buddy read of Thirst by Mary Oliver later this year.

      @@BooksandRadioPlays I agree, plays are best appreciated in performance. But I find it interesting to read them, see what the playwright is doing and think how they would work on stage. I haven't read Coward for years and should. I love Woolf's prose but haven't really explored her poetry. What did you think of it?

    I agree 100% with you, Rose, that to experience the real magic of poetry one should read it in the original form. I shouldn't say this because I translate, and publish, Japanese Classical poetry to contemporary Spanish, but I often face my own work and think that it is so much more beautiful, meaningful and moving in the original form ❤

      @@MarcelaChandía I think translating poetry must be one of the most challenging activities for a translator. How do you balance meaning and capturing a sense of the poetic style? Do you prioritise making it work as poetry in the new language?

    • @MarcelaChandía
      @MarcelaChandía 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@scallydandlingaboutthebooks Japanese and Spanish are similar in their sound but quite different in every other aspect. Since Japanese poetry relies on mora's count to transmit rhythm, it is very difficult to reflect in one language the 'music' of the other. If you add that one Japanese concept could mean a whole Spanish sentence, it is even more complex. So, I try to translate the meaning, the sentiment more than anything

    I'm IN! Fantastic initiative, exactly what I have been looking for and one of my main personal motivations of reading: learning about parts of the world I don't know much about! I'll try to get hold of these books in spanish, which is in the language I most comfortably read. BTW, have you read "Hurracain Season" from Mexican author Fernanda Melchor? Not sure how well it gets translated to english (with all its mexican/local lingo), but HIGHLY recommended. A masterpiece in my opinion (could have made it into this list perhaps :P). Thank you for a delighful video! Greetings from Uruguay.

    I've been reading up about translations of The Iliad. Did you have a preference between the two translations? I'm leaning towards reading Wilson when I get around to The Iliad.

      @@danieljackson3367 I was very impressed by Wilson. Her version really flows and makes the text feel like something that would work as an oral performance. Fagles was very readable and poetic though.

    What a list!! I just finished Boysie Singh last week and really enjoyed it! I am adding so many of these to my TBR, but I think The Night Alphabet has to go at the top of the list 🤩 Yay for Soldier Sailor. Such an incredible book 🧡
