Great makeover for your small budget. When I had to downsize my mom from 1000 sq feet to 200 sq feet. We took pictures of the items that had special memories but passed the actual item on to goodwill so someone else could enjoy it. (Just like you are enjoying your finds!)

But you have inspire me to restore it. Watching you do it will help me definitely. The cabinet lid that brings the machine up is missing. Consider dry walling the ceiling to avoid breathing fiberglass from loose insulation!!!!

After dragging around my grandmas 1938 Singer 15-88 treadle for the last 40 years because it's just kinda cool as an antique, I oiled it up and started using it with its original cracked leather belt. One thing I have found is that is not easy going slow as you can end up going backwards very easily using the treadle. So on starting and initial backstitching you always start it by hand. Thankfully it has a spoked wheel and I end up just using one finger in the spokes to go slow. Not sure how adding a hand crank would affect the treadle usage, which can really fly during straight runs. Also found an extra washer in the tensioner, must have been my grandpa, but it didn't release tension when the foot was lifted. It is a beast though.

Wiss shears are the best. I have 4 pair, including pinking shears.

I bought a hem marker and a set of antique sewing machine feet in a beautiful velvet box on eBay a number of years ago. They packed the small container of chalk with it. The package was delayed and I waited a couple of weeks for it. When it arrived the package had be ripped apart. Customs had thought the “white” substance wasn’t chalk. They destroyed the velvet box looking for more drugs and I was heart broken that the box had been destroyed. Lesson learned.

I wonder if 18th century people made 15th century dresses ... ?

This gown turned out beautifully! I have always been intimidated to make something with all of the fancy embellishments, but your way of breaking it down step by step makes it understandable. I have used both a Simplicity American Duchess pattern (different one) and the book, and agree the book is much better. As I understand it, after historical costumers submit their designs and patterns to one of the big commercial companies, it is out of their hands, and the patterns and construction methods are often "modernized" with very strange construction methods (to me) and poor instructions and sizing. Looking forward to part two!

Amazing work. The details you did were perfect. I love to sew, although I am not as good as you. Life has been difficult this past year and a half. I want to get into sewing again. I made in the past 2 victorian christening gowns. A medieval queen gown. And many costume dresses for my daughters when they were little. It's too bad there are no longer sewing classes in public schools.

Good quality vintage scissors are fantastic BUT they can only be sharpened so many times before they cannot be sharpened again because very time you have them sharpened you loose some metal off the blades. Good quality pinking sheers can often be sharpened but you will need to pay by the "tooth" ( every peak/valley).Old thread, yes can be brittle but it can be used for basting and making pattern markings

The old scissors are just too heavy for some of us with arthritis. I’ve been using a pair of lighter weight Fiskars for about 12 years now with no problems & they cut great for me (garment fabrics). Though I do use a rotary cutter too.

I'm late to the party, and I just love this bedgown! It's true, the usual ones you see are very plain and tend to be too loose fitting for me. The side and back pleats are beautiful and also helpful with adjusting the fit it seems. Thank you for sharing your project journey, I find it more helpful to me than a step by step tutorial. The finished garment is lovely and I would absolutely wear it with jeans!

Check to see if your community has any kind of crafting recyclers. Mine has Who Gives a Scrap, dedicated to recycling donated art and craft supplies and keeping them out of landfills. It's a TREASURE trove!

THE CHALK TOOL WAS SOMETHING I USED AS A YOUNG SEWIST. I CANNOT FIND THEM ANYWHERE. I USE OLD THREAD FOR HAND BASTING.

Also There is a treadle belt cover for the belt so it doesn’t pop out of place when putting the machine up and down

I have been sewing since I was 12 years old and am now almost 74. I actually have most of the vintage tools you are showing and some how I feel very old! If you can’t find the pleat maker you can use a fork with long tines.

be careful with vintage rulers, as an inch wasn't the same size as an inch is today! Which is another reason why it often seems vintage patterns measure out differently.

Thanks for sharing the vintage sewing tools. I have been sewing since the seventh grade, and I own many of the tools that you shared. I don’t sew garments much at this time because I am an avid quilter. The information on the Wiss shears is especially useful. I have a pair that belonged ❤to my mother, so I will have them sharpened.

The day my mother died I swore to myself that i would never darn sox,, render lard and can tomatoes again. So far so good.
