I agree with your words about size and am so grateful for knowing how to do alterations. I just wish other people didn’t remember that I use to do that for a side hustle when I 1st started teaching and needed extra income. Was so long ago but the skills come in handy.

I have done some sewing for cash, mostly to raise funds for charity. I don't mind doing minor alterations for people I love, but I won't do big stuff because it's too stressful. If it's my own clothes and I mess up, oh well. But I'd hate to mess up someone's wedding dress.

Just bought a skirt at resale shop for a dollar. Can't wait to get it to my machine tomorrow. Thanks for this timely post. I'm short so I'm constantly hemming pants.

I'm glad it will be helpful to you! The pull-on skirt I altered in this video was thrifted. I love going to thrift stores!

I saw a dress at a thrift store that i absolutely loved the fabric design and texture but it was a 1x and i am a suze 1 or 3, even fit in 14 in kids. Well i bought it anyway ,looked up videos to resize to fit me and everything i found said such things could only be sized down by 2 sizes. I am proud to say that i proved that info to be FALSE! Since then i have made it a point to search through extremely large for me clothing because i CAN make anything that is too big for me actually fit me perfectly and use the remainder of the fabric for a skirt, halter top, or whatever i can make with whatever is leftover. In fact a 2x dress, i cut the sleeves off and created a skirt with ine skeeve and matching halter top with the other sleeve while i made a fitted maxi dress with the body of the dress and a hair wrap to match as well. One dress two totally different style outfits. And the wildest part is that i paid 2 while dollars fir the one dress. I did get a few odd looks as i was in the plus size section. I am pretty much self taught sewing since i have no one really to ask questions or have show me things. My mom does know a great deal with lots of experience. Only i have no, and maybe i should be ashamed of myself, of course i dont think so, but within minutes of being in each others presence i have to just leave , get away from her judgemental, lewd, unnecessary slur as i gave ZERO tolerance fororetty much everything she is about . Its truly heartbreaking its been this way since only 4 years ago , prior to that period we were extrenely close and she was nothing like how she is now. Im baffled by the fact that she is not the same , neither is my dad, i omg what am i doing? Way off topic ,so very sorry. Bye

Refashioning clothes is such a great idea and a wonderful skill to have! You could do videos about that! People love to watch them. I'm sorry about the situation with your parents, it's so hard when people we love change, isn't it?

Just bought a pair of pants online that I need to alter, the waist fits perfectly, but the hips make me look like an oompa loompa. I’ve also got sweaters I want to shorten, and I just bought a sewing machine that came with a twin needle, so I’ll have to try that out.

LOL at the oompa loompa line. :-) I've had that happen too! You can take them in at the side seams.. Put the pants on inside out and pinch the excess fabric at the outer side seam until the fit is what you want. You can pin the new seamline or just mark it with a pen.

Do you alter your own clothing? If so, what alterations do you typically make? In addition to fixing the waistband on my jeans, as shown on this video, I often shorten skirts and pants, and I usually need to take in dresses and blouses at the shoulder and at the waist.

I’ve altered some things, usually making my skirt waists smaller after I’ve lost weight. I’ve also been altering my tee shirts to make them more comfortable (like making the neck a little bigger so it doesn’t strangle me) and more feminine (like changing the length and sleeves).

@@aubreyjanuary9809 Yes, I've done those things too. Especially on the t-shirts and other knit shirts. Sometimes they're too boxy and it's nice to give them some shape.
