The BEST thing you can do in Guatemala | Acatenango Volcano Hike (female & male perspective + Fuego)
Is the Acatenango volcano hike really as hard as everyone says? Is it worth your time and money while you are in Guatemala? Are you even going to get good views in the off-season?! Come with me as we tackle this bucket list activity and go through all the ups and downs associated with this huge hike!
PACKING LIST AND FULL COST BREAKDOWN IS INCLUDED AT THE END OF THE VIDEO!
Since I learnt that you could sleep at the top of a volcano and watch the neighbouring volcano erupt throughout the night, I knew it was something I needed to experience in my lifetime. During our recent visit to Antigua, Guatemala this hike was our PRIORITY.
Coming from Canada where we have lived in, and hiked around, the Rockies for the better part of three years, I felt somewhat capable but still TERRIFIED.
Everything you read online says this is the hardest thing they have ever done. Throughout the video, you can see how my opinion keeps changing as we take a very realistic look into how demanding this hike truly is.
Choosing a company to complete the Acatenango hike with can be overwhelming as there are so many on offer! We visited with Lava Trails and had a great experience so I can safely say they were a great choice!
Completing the Acatenango hike in itself is an amazing feat, but for those wanting more of a challenge or to add to their experience, there is an additional hike to Fuego on offer. This hike takes you as close as possible to Fuego volcano and adds another 3-4 hours of hiking to your day. I chose not to do this hike, but Tristan did it so we show you both sides of this experience. What you can expect if you do add Fuego and what you will experience if you don't. This is also a great male vs. female perfective on the experience! Spoiler alert: Tristan found it a lot easier than I did!
This was one of the best things we have ever done and I will never get over the surreal feeling this experience has left me with.
Acatenango is one for the bucket list for sure!

To get to the top of Standish Mountain you need to ride a chairlift so I'm not sure how a stroller would work in that situation! A chest carrier is probably the best option but I would recommend reaching out to Sunshine Village to see what they recommend. The pathways are mostly loose gravel as well. I hope you're able to find a way to make it work! It's a beautiful place to visit.

It’s absolutely horrific that you can’t drive there anymore , now you have to take a 100$ bus instead of driving your own vehicle for free. Simple solution should have been expanding the road network.

    • @caitlinlaurent
      @caitlinlaurent 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

I disagree, "expanding the road network" would result in such unnecessary destruction in what is one of the most beautiful places and national parks. Yes, not being able to drive and go on your own schedule does suck. We first visited when you could still drive so I get it. BUT we also know exactly how chaotic the traffic was because of the mass tourism and it was a nightmare. There are plenty of different bus companies you can take and the Parks Canada shuttle starts as low as $7 so I would argue there are still affordable options that make this area accessible to everyone.

In short, you don't NEED a car but we did have a car the whole time and for the few weeks we didn't have it (parents were using it!) we felt kinda trapped. If its your first season though I think you would be fine without one for winter as your still excited about banff things and most external things are likely closed. Summer is when you want to be out exploring the most! I hope that helps :)

This video is an emotional one for us but we do talk about some practical things like what travel insurance provider we are using for our upcoming adventures! To learn more about SafetyWing, check it out here tinyurl.com/SafetyWingNomad

How expensive is getting hair done in Canada? I get my bleach regowth done for my blonde hair, and wonder if itts affordable in Canada.

I don't find it very different! I just got mine done and it was approximately $380

They wouldn’t let you have time off? That’s horrible! You should Sue!!!! What was the place called? I’d start an online petition to have them boycotted. That is so unfair! Enjoy your travels you deserve it! Awaiting for more instalments of your fab content. Can’t wait to see where this journey takes you.

Thank you for your support and we are excited to have you following along! Unfortunately, not all businesses in working holiday towns are the best to work for. We were fortunate to get an extra 6 months with the process we went through but in hindsight, it was a learning curve and I'm not sure we would do it again. Oh well, on to bigger and better things now!
