Spending The Night In An Abandoned TITAN I Nuclear Missile Silo
Hidden in a remote field in Deer Trail, Colorado lies a marvelous piece of history. In the year 1960, during the cold war, the United States contracted the Martin Company to construct the first sets Titan I ICBM base. At their peak, 54 of these $44.5 million apiece silos were operational at one time. They contained Nuclear warheads that were capable of accurately hitting a target over 5,000 nautical miles away in just 33 minutes at 18,030 MPH. A typical silo configuration consisted of 3 launchers, a powerhouse, a control center, antenna control, and air intake/exhaust facilities, complete with their own water and power supplies. Each silo is 44 feet in diameter and 160 feet deep. The walls ranged from 2 to 3 feet thick, giving them the appropriate title of "super-hardened" bases.
The rockets themselves were over 100 feet tall and were lifted out of the silo, exposing them briefly before launch. Before this could be done though, the crew would have to prepare for 15 minutes, most of the time waiting for the fuel to fill from the external storage tanks. This would later be optimized in the TITAN II ICBM's by keeping the propellant stored in the rocket itself. The propellant used was liquid oxygen/kerosene. Throughout the history of the TITAN I ICBM's, they build around 160 rockets. There were a total of 70 launches, with a success rate of only 75.71%

Noteworthy Information:
- Everything in this video has been verified to be accurate in accordance to the original design documents
- At 3AM we actually ran into another group of explorers. Scared us half to death. They were nice enough but didn't stick around very long
- We actually had to return to this location 3 times on this trip to obtain all the footage. The owners are known to call the police, so be careful
- The entrance we took was not the original. The giant diesel tank you see at the beginning was dug up many years ago and the original entrance has been sealed
- The last thing to operate in this place was the elevator, which was used an estimated 20 years ago to haul the last salvageable equipment out
- Silo No 2 seems to be inaccessible due to flooding. One day I hope to go back here more prepared to see if I can get the rest on film, though I suspect it will look the same as the others
- For light, I brought a full-sized car battery and stuffed it in my backpack with an inverter and work light. Inconvenient, but effective
- If you decide to explore a similar place, please be safe. This place in particular is incredibly dangerous. Between tendinous and the huge sudden drops, something really bad could potentially happen. I actually knocked my head against a hose right next to a 40-foot drop, so watch yourself.
- This video took a lot of time and effort to make. A lot of them I found online really didn't do it justice. I genuinely hope you enjoy it and learn something. if you'd like to see more, consider subscribing. Thanks!

Today we revisit the abandoned Jamestown Mall, just a few weeks after 2 separate fires were started inside the Dillards and Macys. The mall was opened in 1973. It operated for 42 years until they welded and boarded their doors shut in 2013. Plans have been discussed about demolishing the mall, but those plans have been silent for 3 years now.

Cairo IL - The Saddest Town In America

Cairo IL is the southernmost city in Illinois with a dark history. In 1909, William James and Henry Salzner were lynched publicly in the town, among several others. At this time, Cairo contained 5% of Illinoi's black population. Considering the size of the town, and the fact its total population was at 13,000, this is unbelievable. The construction that once helped establish the town would end ...

Are you NOT supposed to be in there? Why 2am??
Fun fact; the cost of these silos to build in 1060 was supposed to be $29 million dollars. It went over budget to $51 million per silo. $1000000 in 1960 is equal to almost 11 million dollars in 2024 . A launch facility would today have cost $569 million dollars. They were in use for at most 5 years. Shocking? Yep.
If I had the money, I would buy the property and restore it as close as possibly with the addition of living quarters and a kitchen.
I recently saw a video that showed a new co-op store that opened in Cairo ladt spring. Business is good and hope is restored in that town!
The liberal Chicago money didn't make it to the bottom of the state.
There are no New CLear Missles.
Amazing video. Great drone work in the intro. Thanks so much for sharing that super sketchy, super creepy facility with us!
There’s one near me that had an incidental detonation inside the silo but I’m pretty sure they cemented it off and there’s a house like 30 feet from the entrance but I’m still really tempted in checking it out
Well done!
I went to that school, back in the 90's and it's sad how things have changed.
Great video! I grew up at this mall and visited it last in 2014 before it closed. They just had another fire on April 19, 2023 and they're hoping to fasttrack the demolition because it was so dangerous for the 2 firefighters that were hospitalized. I'll be driving by soon for one last dash cam video from the street and once it's finally demolished. Update: Got a little footage of demo and will check back from time to time.
How is it possible for the ppl that still live there, to continúe their life? Not stores to buy basic things, not schools, not hospital, nothing.....
Drove by this yesterday and wondered what it was. Thanks for the video!
This is a great video - love the music. Cairo does have pretty areas as well. St Mary's Park, Magnolia Manor, Cairo Public Library, just to name a few. Pray it comes back!
It's a shame they don't make that a historical place I wonder how long that raccoons got like how many years in prison
I heard that lots of people getting caught but that was like 4-5 years ago. Seems like I’ve seen a lot of people post videos about this one recently. Do you think the land owner has chilled out a bit?
I wouldn’t say he’s “chilled out” but I went here recently at 2am and it was chill to explore. Probably don’t do it during the day
@@liamelder1972 how did it go. i see this is 3 weeks ago i'm trying to go soon so have any tips. I've done ella research too just want personal storys.
@@brandondude1259 it honestly went very smooth, that being you must show up after 12am and walk about a mile in. I have given the spot’s location to a select group of my close friends who have checked it out on their own time without me and had no problems exploring and dealing with the owner. As for where I parked, I parked at the intersection of the county road and the dirt road that leads up the silo area you should see a collection of big power line holders right off the road near this intersection and that’s where I snuck my car into (Infiniti m56 to give you an idea of what can get down there off the road, don’t go too far just about 50-100 yards off the road ), on the walk up be sure to be silent and not show any light whatsoever. As for where the actual entrance was I was able to get an idea from looking a various videos that visit the site but you’ll know you found it when you arrive at a giant pit in the middle of the silo area where they dug into the ground to retrieve heavy equipment, at the bottom you’ll see a ton of tumble weeds that collect at your entrance clear the ones from the right side and you’ll find a dig out hole you can scooch into (a decent sized person can fit in it probably). From there let you extensive knowledge of titan 1’s guide you and be sure to have an idea of how the layout works but overall I can say that this relatively low risk as long as you a diligent and show up at the right time. If you need anything else lmk, I will say that launcher #2 is the most dry from what I can tell at the time I visited.
@@liamelder1972hey I wanted to go explore to take pictures. How do people go without getting caught? Where do I even park at
Where is that bridge at 4:14?
Honestly I am not sure. I came down route 3 from St. Louis and it was just on the way. Maybe 10 miles north of Cairo?

Great video. I want to visit myself.
Hi sir, I enjoyed this a lot. I moved to St. Louis after graduating from the Univ of Illinois in 1980. That first parking lot you parked into and got kicked out of was Council Towers apartments for seniors. I lived right across the way in those twin "tower" 12 story apartment buildings for my first year there. At 1:07. Called Grand Towers. Now part of StL University called Marchetti Towers I think. Dorms. I enjoyed this. Brought back memories. TY sir
Looks like a war zone between sorties!
What went wrong with this building income ? Love the video guys wish i could see it whe. It was up and running in The past
Thank you! Glad you like it. It's actually an interesting story. My buddy worked in construction, and this is what he told me. When this was operating as a normal apartment, it was bought out by some other company. It was very run down at this point, and people didn't want to pay rent since everything was broken. Well this new company didn't want to fix anything if nobody was paying rent. So it was this viscous circle where nobody paid and nothing got done. Eventually the new company just cut their losses and basically moved on. People stayed there until it was so run down, it wasn't possible. That's why you see jerryrigged wires and more stuff than you'd expect for an abandoned place. It was still lived in for years after, until everything in it was so run down, they were forced to leave. Didn't bother taking much with them since all their stuff was run down as well. Just moved on I guess. Very odd situation, but cool location none the less. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the reply so cool and what was the restaurant on top about ? Thank you for ur time just a cool werid looking building at the sane time cant believe pepole lived there and on top was a restaurant thats nuts but cool
@@davedsilva61987 I don't know too much about the restaurant. It had some other office buildings at the bottom but I don't know what they were for. There's actually reports online of a bowling alley in the basement, but that definitely was not the case. No basement at all actually. But, there's an active little grocery store attached at the bottom. I suspect that used to be the bowling alley, just based on the shape of it, but I could be wrong. I might need to go in and visit to get more info. I'll let you know if I do.
Never thought I would see this in my life time. I remember a time before malls. So sad
After 2 years without a new video, I guess this channel's dead ?
Late response, sorry. I actually have been getting the itch to go out again. I have 2 filmed videos but they are unedited. Hopefully soon I will find the time to get back into it. Hopefully this summer

Thanks for the tour... But, I gotta say = kinda NUTS @ 10:48 shutting that door unless you already knew about, and verified, an open way to egress out of there. I know we are all bulletproof, right? At the very minimum, I'd be wearing a N100 filter regulator and eye protection for any rust coming down. I'd definitely would go in if I'm around there again... I'm an avid cave and technical wreck scuba diver... We get ded if we get hung in a ship wreck such as the Doria, etc... Word to the wise.. Get yourself a light you do not have to tether to a remote batter... It would really be a bad day if a light's power line snagged and you lost your balance.. Very bright headlamps are easy to find, and cheap compared to what I use under water... Regardless... Thanks for the tour! Be safe!
nice editing
