Western New York Reunion - Time Machine to the early LA&L
On May 17th, 2024, the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum in Rush, NY was alive with the sound of two burbling ALCO 539 engines for the first time, both in matching Livonia, Avon, & Lakeville dress. LA&L S-2 #72 had been restored to operation and ran test runs in the early afternoon hours, turning its wheels for the first time on R&GV property since the locomotive was donated to the museum in November, 2023. In the late-afternoon hours, #72 joined sister RS-1 #20, which was donated by the LA&L in 2016, for a special photo charter event coordinated by Timeless Rail Expeditions featuring both units operating together and "side-by-side" for the first time since 2008, along with a photo freight consist and LA&L caboose #2603. #20 and #72 had been primary power in the 1970s and early 1980s on the LA&L before larger "century" series ALCOs took over the job of connecting Livonia and Lakeville to Avon, and eventually Rochester, NY.
Photographers were treated to several runbys and poses throughout the charter, beginning on the museum's incline linking the depot to the shop facility. A meet scene at "switch 6" at the top of the incline took place subsequently, followed by runbys at speed past a set of restored New York Central searchlight signals in the woods along the museum's line to Midway Station. As the rain began to set in, and the passengers consumed a pizza and salad dinner, the evening session began with LA&L #72 on a caboose hop, before LA&L #20 assumed control of the North end of the photo freight train in the fading light with runbys uphill on the incline, with plenty of ALCO smoke. The evening concluded with a special night photo shoot, with lighting provided by Steve Barry, Mike Burkhart, and John Reagan. Special thanks goes out to the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum for working to get #72 operational for the event, as well as each person who attended and helped to support the R&GV Museum's mission to preserve railroad history in New York. We would also like to thank Steve, John, and Mike for providing lighting for the night shoot and working against the rain to give everyone great results.

Great operations video! Glad to see these short lines alive and kicking. Even with the latest new tech locomotives, you can beat the “ rugged character” of these Alcos in a perfectly matched paint job!
What is that sound @18:39
Probably, the wheel flanges squeaking going around the curved leg of the switch .
During WW2 and the early 1950's the W&P used to see 40 trains a day between Pittsburgh and Wheeling. It was down to two trains each way plus local industrial switcher run in the mid 1980's when CSX decided to abandon it west of Washington PA. The decline of the W&P is a classic example of the decline of industry in the Pittsburgh region. 😔
i want to make one of those switch houses my home... there are a few of them in my city,,, i'd be very happy to make a one room house out of it. serve coffee perhaps lol make some home made apple pie, as i do. it's the best lol
I love the banter between engineer and brakeman at about 35:00-38:00. Cool to see them having fun for a small photo/video op next to the station. It looked real nice, made me feel like I was in 1950 and see it in real time.
It was definitely a great time!
Love the horn echo. Any is a good day when you can catch an alco.
Roman said "Nice train Mr. MEAT WHISTLE!"
What about mr pipe whistle?
I know rain sucks while trying to film and photograph, but I applaud you for staying out in it! The shots where it is really dark and coming down just (for me) really make it timeless. Thank you for sharing with us!
Gotta love'em. It's not easy being an ALCOholic.
Great video, thanks to all who made that day possible. Having been there, I highly recommend that you visit this fine operating museum.
That’s just a unique ALCO sound. It brings back fond memories of the RS1 that we had on the New Hope & Ivyland back in the 1970’s.
Great mix!!❤️👍🏻🚂( Talk, Talk…👌🏻❤️) & those old GE gondola cab❤️❤️
Great video well done!
it's good to see LA&L 72 return into operation condition once again, probably the first time seeing the Alco S-2 in action ever since it was retired back in 2021, and then being part of the RGVM. oh and nice job on the video. 🙂👍
LA&L #72 returns. She runs on her own power once more since she was donated in November 2023. WB to operation LA&L #72. She's a nice diesel electric locomotive.
Great Video!
Thanks!
Great video as always. Wish I could be there
My special needs son loves trains 🚆🚂🚃🚄🚅🚇🚈🚉🚊🚝🚞🚋🛤 especially Alco's like those 2!

I just wanna say but they have been running the Bessemer 862 very often now I saw yesterday twice.
I will never see those IC SD70s. Only started railfanning the Bessemer Sub June 9, 2023
Can use some footage from this video for a documentary about BLE 878 I'm working on? (With credit of course)
Yes, as long as you provide credit you are welcome to use it.
@@BessemerLakeErie902 thanks it's very much appreciated
Yea awsome catch catching this race of these 2 trains
Railfan since the nickel plate days especially love the short line videos
Nicely done! Really enjoyed this vid!!!
How come they are not using that GE loco--- the Alco sounds tired, might need some work.
Love those shots of WNYP on that Horseshoe shaped bridge in Oil City. I haven’t seen any videos of that until now. I was hoping they would work that customer when I chased back in April but they didn’t that day.
Gotta love it Alec! Glad I could have been with you for the Virginia Trip! Great job editing & looking forward to the Big Sandy Next summer!
I appreciate you including me in so many of your adventures!
Love, the WNYP, videos and Bessemer

Thumbs Down For use of Music... Copyright Laws Broken with Copyright Music!
This is part of the fair use clause from section 107 of the Copyright Act. I am not making any money off of this, and using the music strictly for entertainment.
You must be a riot at parties.
Imagine only posting mainly train Sim videos rather than seeing ACTUAL trains...
Thumbs down for your hella cringe comment!
Wow, a first?
Awesome Recap Alec! A lot of cool catches for 2023!
Thanks man! I’m glad you enjoyed it! Here’s to many more adventures together!
I see there's a depot in CC, NY! Is there any information about the RR in CC? That I can read online.
Good job driving in the beginning, off the road, right before the train moves.
I thought that was a rash move on the driver’s part, so I made sure to include it in the video.
he,he, driver screwed up the suspension.😆
This is so awesome
Great video...

I like the vehicle in the beginning that drives around the locomotive even off the street 😅
Thumbs up! Love the little bridges! Have a great new week! ✔✔
Train on the diamond sounds like drums... perfect rhythm
Film a railroad crossing tour of Cross Road, Avoca, NY. WARNING! Dead End. If there is a train coming and it's very long, wait for the train to pass.
