The Tortuga-Man
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 7 ต.ค. 2019
A series of video diaries of work carried out, trips out, for my floating home, "Tortuga" - I will also explore the performance of the boat, a Bayliner 2556 Cierra Commandbridge (flybridge) fitted with Volvo Penta 5.0 GXi 270hp V8 and a DPS-a Duo Prop sterndrive.
Things that Go Bump In The Night !
Overnight of the 5th to 6th August 2023 - a strong North Westerly wind and higher than usual tides, created conditions that resulted in a minor issue with the Razorcrest's mooring.
One of those things that happens in the boating world !
No boats were harmed in the filming of this video ! lol

Excellent job on the video - thanks for sharing!
@@jimkeys7580 thanks Jim
Thanks for the video, I have the same tick noise at idle, figured in was in the valve train. Is there no valve adjustment on these engines? You just tighten the rockers down?
Basically, the adjustment is the pre-load of the hydraulic valve lifter. A bit like setting tappets, rotate the engine so that the valves are closed, and tighten the rocker adjustment until the pushrod can just be rotated with your fingers and there is no up and down movement
@@the-tortuga-man awesome thank you! Ive done it on the 3.0 merc I had. I’ve been looking for a manual to make sure I was doing it correctly but can’t seem to find what I’m looking for.

Hi, do you still have your Bayliner 2556? I have recently aquired one and will have her on a mooring in the Hamble in the Spring 2024 all being well!
Hi Sean. Yes I still have the 2556, it still lives at Town Quay. Great boats, I’m sure you will have a lot of fun with yours!
Yes really looking forward to getting her out into the Solent! I may make the trim tab mod that you did a video on and year after will probably fit a bow thruster. Also love the radar arch you have, did you fit that?
@@seanf42 the trim tab mods definitely made a difference and bow thruster makes docking so much easier in a cross wind. The radar arch was on there when I got it, but I believe it is a genuine Bayliner accessory rather than a generic aftermarket unit. Simple design but stylish I think
had a similar problem with my manifolds on my volvo 280, the gasket on the starboard side failed, and actually got water into the #2 cylinder, thank god the piston was all the way up, so it couldn't fill it and cause hydro lock.... I never liked the 2 piece design, for having faith/trust in a $20 gasket, is certainly not there, so I bought stainless one piece design manifolds, so no more gasket failure, and no more manifold rot!
Thanks for your comment. I must admit that stainless manifolds are on my wish list but the cost is very high here in the UK as almost all of them are made in the USA or Australia and import costs are prohibitive.
@@the-tortuga-manno problem! yes, us Canadians know the sting of high prices as well, taxes/import duties/exchange, 😁 but I look at it from a another point of view, sure they're $$$, but as an avid, year round boater, it gives me peace of mind knowing that the stainless will never rot, no gasket will fail, I won't have a bent connecting rod in the middle of the ocean, and the only maintenance on them, other than occasional flushing, is the anode
@@FoundationElectronics totally agree, a worthwhile investment compared to the cost of an engine rebuild or even just the regular replacement of the cast iron manifolds when they rust through. As I say, close to the top of the wish list, just need the budget to catch up with the wishes!
@@the-tortuga-man good luck! I plan to make a video on the installation of them when I receive them...

Must have been a tremendous shock to find out it was her! So pleased that you, along with the other amazing guys, managed to get her back on the water again and that minimal damage has been done. A real "phew" moment I would imagine! Looking forward to the next episode! 😊

any videos on the 2556 in the future ? cheers love the content
Hi, sorry, life has been pretty crazy lately, but yes there will be some more vids on the 2556 at some point. Thanks for watching
It's really starting to come together! Brilliant work. Got to admit the new parts really show up the rest of the engine! I know it's not a glamour competition but why was she left so long? Yes, any bits of rust that can still be seen are just surface stuff and after the clean up it looked a whole lot better. Those flaps were simple to fit, I'd probably be able to manage that! They're not completely watertight though are they? I wonder how long it is since that poor engine turned over like that 🤔 You've made amazing progress, bet you're really pleased. Looking forward to the next episode 😊
The new parts do show up the rest, although the engine is clean now and will get a final coat of engine paint before it’s finished. No the flaps aren’t intended to be completely watertight, they just prevent “sloshing” back up the exhaust.
@@the-tortuga-man ah right, I can understand that you wouldn't want lots of water sloshing up there! It'll be good to see the engine when it's all finished and looking smart. The engine looks more accessible than that of Tortuga, is that right?
@@heidispawsandfins The engines are actually less accessible, because there are 2 of them, side by side in a space that is only a little bigger than Tortuga. At the moment, the exhaust manifolds are off from both engines in order to give me the space to work round them. Once they go back in, you will see just how tight it is in there
@@the-tortuga-man Ah right, thanks for clarifying. I look forward to seeing them back on! 😊
When you're having to be cameraman, director and star of the show, I am sure you can be forgiven!

Sorry about the minor issues with the camera focus on a couple of occasions in this vid.
O.....M......G! The state of those starter motors and THREE hours to get the buggers out! 😱 What patience you have! I must admit I had to laugh when you said that overhauling them would not be possible!! 😂 The new name SO suits that boat and a great idea for your personal reasons. x
Getting ready for the season shipmate. I know the feeling
You got rid of your Bayliner?
No the Bayliner is still with me, this is a new project
It was mentioned in the video that videos of the different boats would be obviously separate to the viewer.
Wow. Quite the project!
OMG.....what a sorry state! So much rust and is there anything that's not seized?! Is the condition of the engine better or worse than you expected? (Or have you not dug deep enough to know yet?) Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing the next installment 🙂 x
It looks bad but the core of the engine appears to be ok. No water seems to have actually got inside it so fairly confident that it will all be ok. Biggest hurdle is getting the starters out and getting them replaced. Next episode in a couple of days now!
Well a great start! I think I'd want a bit of bleach around her too! Didn't realise that you can get bleach which is kind on nature, is it widely available? The inside after the clean looks SO much better 🙂 Hope the rest of the inside will be as easy to sort! She's really starting to look like a boat that someone cares about. Just the work to the hull and props makes it look amazing! Well done, especially doing it when temperatures haven't been kind x
So the "bio bleach" is an american product that is specifically designed to kill algae and other surface growth and bleach the hull, but it is painted on in a gel. Once it is sprayed off with water, it chemically neutralises it and prevents it from damaging anything else in the environment - not very easily available here, but thanks to Amazon, its amazing what you can get !
@@the-tortuga-man that sounds brilliant! Thanks for expanding on how it works, I'm sure that many boat owners would love to get their hands on that. Is it just for use on boat surfaces (fibreglass etc) or can it be used on other outdoor surfaces to get rid of algae etc like say decking or paths? It's always the case, a fantastic product......but it's American and not readily available in the UK 🙄
this is the product I used ..... th-cam.com/video/ao7sIcA1Gtg/w-d-xo.html
I don't know what a sacrificial anode is, but just based on the name alone I feel I want a set!
I am sure I have some spares if you really want a set ! lol
@@the-tortuga-man so what are they?!! I haven't got the same feeling as Raceway fortunately!! 😂
OK, heres the sciencey bit ! - So, if you put 2 pieces of metal in water, and those 2 pieces are different, like stainless steel and aluminium, then chemically, you have created a battery, and electrical current (very very minute current) will flow between one metal and the other. This is called a Galvanic Reaction. The softer of the 2 metals (in this case the aluminium of the outdrives), will partially dissolve as it has become the Anode in a circuit. Still with me? In order to reduce the effect of this dissolving, another metal, even softer than the aluminium is introduced instead, and so sacrifices itself and gets dissolved instead. The Sacrificial anodes slowly dissolve away and so need to be replaced over time. In this case, the anodes were made of zinc. (For the really techy people, its not actually about the hard or soft metals, its about where each metal sits on the anodic table - with things like gold being at the very top of the table, and zinc being almost at the bottom.)
If you want the really tech explanation, try this.... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanic_corrosion
@@the-tortuga-man yep, totally with you and really interesting. This is the same thing as the zinc blocks put on metal hulls to prevent the hull from rusting, the zinc oxidises first! Loved chemistry 😂

Wow, brilliant! That must have been so wonderful to get her back out on the water doing what she does best! Love the different camera angles too! I'm guessing that you're happy with how that went? Worth all that hard graft eh? 😁
Thank you, yes it went well, not quite the top end performance I have achieved previously, but then there is a lot of fouling growth underneath as she hasn't been out properly for such a long time. Will be coming out of the water for the annual scrub sometime soon I hope
@@the-tortuga-man ah good to hear. So she is coming out then? Full anti-fouling job or will the bottom still have the same ability to work from the last time?
@@heidispawsandfins Hopefully, will just need a scrub and polish, nothing more drastic than that, so out the water, pressure wash and re-launch all on the same day
@@the-tortuga-man fantastic 😁
did you repower that with the volvo engine?
Hi, the original engine was the Volvo 5.0 carbureted unit, but a previous owner re-powered it around 2008 with the multipoint fuel injected 5.0 GXi-J engine with the high rise exhausts, hence the higher “bump” engine hatch
Excellent work Sven, well done.

Wow, that really was a HUGE job! So pleased that you were able to get everything sorted and to get her to come 'alive' again! She sounds sweet. Well done 😊 Everyone needs a trusty blue toothbrush!!
Thank you - been a long slog but finally got there - running a little rough and not idling properly yet, but some fine tuning and will be sorted !
Can't believe that this was a year ago! Will she need her bottom cleaning again this year?
Yes there is a lot of “salad” growing on the underside, but this is mainly due to lack of movement, the antifoul is designed to shed the growth as the boat moves through the water. Hopefully, when the engine is running I will get out and that will give her a clean. If it’s too bad though, she will be coming out the water for a scrub
@@the-tortuga-man nothing like a nice clean bottom eh?

How much does something like this cost to do?
Hi, thanks for your question. The biggest cost here was the bow thruster unit itself. Brand new, the size that I used will retail at between £800 to £900 - I was able to get a great bargain on a used unit for less than £200. The additional equipment such as the battery, cables, and the fibreglass tube came in at another £200 approximately. The work took approximately 20 hours total to complete - also factor in the cost of having the boat lifted out the water as well. If I had paid for this to be done by a marine engineering company/boat yard, it would easily have cost £2000-£2500 to complete. I hope that helps
Well it certainly looked a whole lot better after all that work! Could you have not used a sand pad on a low setting on a drill instead of paper on a block? You say that you've going to vacuum it out, but will that actually get ALL the fine particles out? Look forward to finding out! Waiting for the next one 🙂
Thanks for the question - Whilst the sandpad and drill would have been faster, I wanted to avoid any possibility of gouging the surfaces. Also, with the amount the boat was rocking and bouncing, it could have been difficult to keep it under control. As for vaccuming out the cylinders, they have been sprayed with spray oil, wiped, then brake cleaner, wiped, and will go through this process a couple more times before the vacumming, so fairly confident that should remove everything. The video is only 10 minutes long, but there was over 5 hours work there, mainly cleaning in between the steps. Thanks for watching
@@the-tortuga-man thanks for answering, all helps with gaining knowledge! Nothing like bright corrosion free metal for your efforts! I can see how the bouncing of the boat could have caused damage rather than being helpful! I must confess, the noise of the boat and then your comment about it being rather windy did give me a chuckle! 🙂
