Crinan Canal, Scotland. A passage from Crinan to Ardrishaig. Sailing Scotland [Ep 23]
A lovely passage through the Crinan Canal, Scotland.
Early May 2024
Day 1
From the Sea Lock at Crinan, through locks 15 & 14 and the Crinan Swing Bridge to meet our Canal Pilot, Peter at the Pontoon at Lock 13.
We travelled up through Locks 13, 12, 11, 10 & 9 for our first overnight stop at the Pontoon just after Lock 9.
Day 2
From Lock 9, we travelled down through Locks 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 & 2 to the Ardrishaig Basin where we spent our second night.
Day 3
We were the first boat out at 0830 and off back to Largs Yacht Haven.
We really enjoyed the transit through the Canal, all the staff were very helpful and friendly. We paid and sorted the licence at the office in Crinan when tied up in Lock 15 [Sea Lock].
The canal was quiet with not many boats travelling from Crinan to Ardrishaig and so we had all the locks to ourselves which I imagine makes it easier.
The canal really forces you to slow down and enjoy all the beautiful scenery and surroundings as well as listening to all the wildlife and birdsong.
We found the locks going down [8 to Ardrishaig] very straightforward, where you had to let out the lines. It was slightly more involved going from locks 15 to 9 [but still straightforward] where you feel the turbulence from the locks filling.
The Canal staff radioed ahead to alert the next keeper to raise the bridges or prepare the lock.

Amazing sailing around Ailsa Craig, Scotland. Left Largs Yacht Haven and stayed the night on anchor at Lamlash, Arran before leaving early to sail around the island of Ailsa Craig. What a beautiful and unique place, would love to go back and look ashore. Windy conditions were a challenge with a lot of tacking to get back to Largs. Sula is a Hanse 385 thank you for watching 😊

I have been meaning to spend the night on anchor for some time and this was the first time. Loch Riddon (Loch Ruel) is a beautiful spot and the cool damp weather was a welcome change to the heatwave earlier in the week. Sula is a Hanse 385 (2013). thanks for watching 😊

A beautiful day sailing around Cumbrae in the Clyde on the west coast of Scotland from Largs on Sula, a Hanse 385. We managed to get some nice drone footage of the SCS Flotilla going from Kip around Cumbrae to Holy Loch. We anchored at Millport for a swim and returned back to Largs for dinner.

Wonderful. Still always surreal seeing a yacht in a canal not a narrow boat! What’s the max draft in Crinan.
Thanks Ruaraidh. Crinan Skipper's Guide recommends you contact them in advance if more than 2.2m. Also you will sit slightly lower in the fresh water than sea water.. Sula is 2.1m and had no issues.
Love your videos, I too enjoy the West Coast. Sea Kayaking though. I’d love to buy a boat one day but live further East.

Nice scenery Murray. I did see that Sanda Island was for sale at offers over 2.5 Million would make a nice retreat for someone. I have watched a few channels trying to keep out of the chop at the Mull of Kintyre. Not been around it myself but it looks like to get out of it takes you almost to the traffic separation zone if not in it. I did read somewhere that close-in is an option. As for your presentation, I'm in 😁

I'd love to follow a sailor around this part of thecwest coast of Scotland, but this guy is a bit full of himself. A bit too much eyes sweeping from one side to the other. I'm out.

Hi Paul, I think plenty people do it with 2 crew, you do get help from the canal staff. it was our first trip through and it was certainly very helpful to have a pilot.
What were u doing at 3:45? Can you not just release the sheet why use the whinch?
Hi, at 3.45 I am tightening the main sheet with the winch.
Another beautiful video! Reminds me of my RYA course last June in Largs. Remember seing Sula there. :) How are you satisfied with the self tacking jib? Is there a way to heave to with the system?
Thanks Martin , I really enjoy the self tacker, so easy to sail singlehanded. you can heave-to by wrapping the jib sheet around the mid-ship cleat.

You got a couple of great days, I was just up to Holy Loch this past weekend. The Clyde area offers so many day sail options, such a beautiful place to live. Look forward to seeing you on the water this season.

My Dad was stationed at Holy Loch in the 60's when the US Navy had a submarine base there. Beautiful area, love going back there to visit family!
