Audio Technica LP-7 and Technics SL-1200mk2 Head to Head Comparison - Robin Trower Daydream
In this video I will be showcasing two turntables head to head against each other! These head to head comparisons are often helpful for folks trying to decide on a new piece of gear. For this one I am using a somewhat stock Audio Technica LP-7 which the only exception being an ebay custom machined Aux weight. It will go head to head against an older (1998) but upgraded Technics SL-1200mk2 featuring a Funk Firm Achromat, KAB Electronics Aux weight, and a rewired tonearm. Both turntables will be using an Audio Technica AT33 PTG/2 Moving Coil cartridge mounted on LP Gear ZuPreme 10g headshells. For this test the Emotiva XPS-1 Phono preamp loaded at 76.175 Ohms. The track used is Daydream by Robin Trower of the recently reissued Twice Removed From Yesterday Album.
Enjoy the music and the comparison!

really good to have you making videos for the channel again! I couldn't hear much of a difference but that's ok - still enjoyed it.
I've got 1200GR with AT33PTG/ii - great pair, maybe best cart for this table. However, I recommend to use better phono preamp with it. I'm using Teac 505-PE, it makes soundstage super wide.
This was taped with an Emotiva XPS1... The new one is a Parasound Zphono XRM with variable loading... Game Changer!
Can’t say I hear a massive difference, Technics seems a bit wider in the sound-stage, but they both sound great. I wasn’t familiar with the album, but I’ll be checking it out. Happy you are back, my vinyl cleaning setup thanks you!
Good to have you back Ben. as I listened to the two TT it became obivious that there was an intermittant change in rotational speed from the beltdrive TT. it was most notable on Trevor's guitar transsistions.
Awesome… the timing is interesting to say the least… I honestly think the LP-7 also sounds a bit thicker…
Greetings, it's good to have him back. I'm sorry for your loss.
Hey Ben, So very sorry for your loss and for life's challenges but I'm glad you're back. Both turntables sounded great and I'm hoping to grab the LP-7 this year and start swapping carts. I'm also a Robin Trower fan. He's one of those O.G. innovators that doesn't get enough respect. One question; You've had the 7 for awhile now; how would you rate the tonearm?
I’ve had it for 3 years and the tonearm is pretty good… honestly I picked up a new Technics SL-100c at Christmas for $899 and it will likely be the permanent fixture amzn.to/4j5mmwV
Ben what was causing the noise on the old motor. Maybe servicing it will fix the problem and you will have a spare good motor.
I think it was the bearing needing oil… plan on repairing it
Hi Ben. So, what I could hear on my system was that the Technics had a little better clarity and resolution. The LP-7 had more low end punch. I agree that Robin Trower is one of the greatest guitar players out there today. You should listen to another great guitarist that’s very underrated. That is Rory Gallagher.
Rory is also great! Thanks for watching!
literally no difference or it's so small you can't even hear it
Well I can understand folks thinking so… a bit more pronounced before TH-cam compression… might want to try through a DAC or very high quality playback device and results could be different
Hey Ben sorry to hear about your mom pasing. I was wondering if everything was ok. I found your page a year or 2 ago and was not sure if you still uploading still. Good to see your back.
Thank you so much!
welcome back always enjoyed your videos
Thank you so much! Happy to be back!
Highly impressed with the way you carried out these comparisons!
Thank you sir! More coming soon!
Please don’t run your system at 120 dBA, even for short periods. You will get tinnitus like me. I’m 70 and it really affects your music listening and your life in general.
I don’t generally but it’s been a quite a bit of prolonged exposure so far unfortunately
Ben, I would love you see you explain VTA setup in detail. I have the gauge, know how to adjust it and where the screws are. I just have no real idea of how to use the gauge and how to know when the adjustments are right. I can't find any detailed TH-cam guide. Basically I know how to raise or lower the tonearm but not if it's too high, low or correct. I have a Pro-Ject RPM 5 Carbon with a Ortofon 2m Black LVB 250. (Though I think any turntable you have with a step by step instructions will help me greatly. Even if you don't make a video it's great to see you back.
@@mm11720 sure thing… I have VTA on the fly on the LP-7 and SL-1200mk2… but the new SL-100c is more traditional… I’ll add it to my list of topics
@BensAudioCave Thanks a ton, no hurry, I think it's close. My main issue is the gauge. To look at it properly the tone arm must be floated flat and you must look at the gauge. It seems if your eye is say a inch too low or high it can still seem floated and at the proper height but is likely off a bit. Seems even a 1/8th of a inch off would radically change the needle rake to the wrong angle on my Ortofon LWB 250. Seems there should be a way to make sure you are looking at the gauge straight on without putting your head in a vice😊
Just had a thought. If I use two vta clear blocks back to back and move my head till I see only one line my eyes should be at the right hight to raise or lower the tone arm. Just a thought if I understand this whole thing to get the rake angle right.
Very cool to see the pops resale mat, fellow Lexington audiophile?
Yessir!
The AT just pummels the 2m black, the clarity and naturalness of the AT is amazing, it sounds like real music in comparison. I’ve ordered one 👍🏻 thanks for sharing this.
Awesome sauce! It’s truly a neutral cart that just is way better than its price suggests…
If Audio Technica would just build Turntables like they do Cartridges and Needles...IMO there TT are cheaply built.
Not really than bad on this one… they rely a lot on hanpin… this is a reasonable table… the arm is pretty good as well
@@DG-ie5ip I think lifts at end of play is a bit misleading... it lifts after it sits in the runout groove for a while...
I like the look of this turntable but that motor looks like a bit cheaply made.
@@northa4021 The motor is just a regular DC motor but it works well and keeps accurate speed.
@@BensAudioCave thanks for the reply, great video by the way. Cheers
Put some grease on that thing and welcome back there Ben
Thanks! Yeah I figured replacing it would be just as easy… I retained the old motor and will likely relube the bearing as keep it as a backup
Hey Ben WELCOME BACK!! It's great to see you again!! I've been looking at the 7 for awhile .Motor issues?? How can it be so cheap on such an expensive (to me) table?
Well honestly the motors on any table are not generally very exotic… I mean it’s been in heavy service for like 3 years and AT did tell me they have had little to no issues… I only did it because I saw it visibly on the waveform when I was transcribing an album… I am particularly sensitive to small imperfections so that’s kind of a fault lolz… I will say it’s been a wonderful table and I have enjoyed the Delrin platter… tune in next week and you will hear it compared against the SL-1200mk2 featured all over this channel… still a good deal… but not so sure that the SL-100C I picked up for $899 at Christmas wasn’t the deal of the decade. I mean heck even at $1099 it’s a steal… as long as you plan on ditching the cart amzn.to/427hh0K
@@BensAudioCave I know, right? why put a $49 conical stylus on $1099 turntable. Even the LP-7 comes with an elliptical.
@@tomkershaw4384well I got in on the Amazon Christmas $899 deal so there’s that… but by this time I have so many carts; the 95c was actually ok because sadly I didn’t have any conical styli

Welcome back Ben! Good to see you again and a Happy New Year. Looking forward to another video.
Thank you, happy new year to you as well!
Beens Back, Yea!
Thanks so much!
To me the only thing that changed was the lower end like bass or bass drum kick
Not a ton of differences here
Ben, do you think Tergikleen is better than Vinyl Vac solution? I really like VV solution, never tried Tergikleen. Thanks!
I’m a tergikleen fan… but it does require a rinse
I think there's little green or grayISH men riding around in flying turntable like discs made of weather balloon materials enabling these Objects to trac & Skate much faster than the speed of Sound but they are Silent.
Out of the 3, which would you say eliminated the clicks and pops most?
I would say the the at33 ptg/2… but the best way to eliminate clicks and pops is thorough cleaning… the 2M black is brutal for surface noise… if you have very noisy albums look into a nude elliptical
Hi! I have the MoFi UltraDeck with the MasterTracker cartridge. Do I need to use a mat, since it has a Dalrin platter and they say that you don’t need a mat for this turntable? Someone is using the Wooden Bull Leather and Cork mat. I’m not sure if I should use one or not. And if so, what adjustments should I make on the tonearm? Thank you!
I do not use a mat on my technics LP-7 which also has a delrin platter… However, I suggest using this clamp amzn.to/41dGIxc

I am a big believer in using magic eraser to and then finish off with my 1970's Discwasher stylus brush.
The old 1970's Discwasher beautiful wooden handle with the mirror on the back stylus brushes are the shizaz! I use mine daily. I have checked my stylus under a jewelers loop after using and that old tech brush is still hands down awesome for cleaning stylus's.
It appears you are picking up polymer leftovers from record sleeves which is commonly known as ghosting from polymer record sleeve's leaching into to said records after a many years of storage. Sometimes the leaching can be so bad it ruins the playability of said records permanently. There area lot of folks opening 15 plus year old albums now because of this. It is one thing to have sealed records but if they are getting damaged what is the point. There is a certain window of polymer sleeves that were being used in said era. I do not know this correct timeline off the top of my head right now.
The main way to test cartridges is to keep the cantilever material and stylus diamond profile equal across all designs tested. If you compare a cheaper cartridge with lesser quality cantilever and stylus profile with a more expensive one with with higher quality cantilever and stylus profile then the results will be skewed. Test all cartridges with nude tapered boron cantilevers and micro-linear styluses, then you can determine which design sounds better.
molti dicono che il miglior sistema è quello dell'accessorio technics che da anche l'overhang a 52mm
This test was a bit impossible to tell, I think some people might be imagining some things. The Acrylic to me sounded slightly more open...BUT, unless you are playing the same cut over and over for each mat instead of just going through the music which is changing from one mat to the other, it would be nearly impossible to hear the differences because you have nothing to compare any of the mats with that is consistent. With that being said, I have the stock rubber mat, a cork mat, and a Hudson HiFi Acrylic mat, and at home, I could immediately hear the difference that made the Acrylic mat just stand out from the others by a wide margin. But, in your video presentation that difference that I got at home I can barely tell anything on this video. A lot of that might have to do with I have just regular TH-cam, which is not the best sound format to be trying to critically listen to music, whereas some of you might be listening with TH-cam Music Premium thus can hear more subtleties than I can. But again, I keep going back to not hearing the same cut being played over and over for each mat, and for me that presents a problem.
I was trying to make it enjoyable… I do have all the videos for each mat… I did capture the audio at 24/96 FLAC but TH-cam doesn’t let that happen… it’s more like a 192 mp3 on highest quality… still when played through a DAC and the system which you would be using the turntable with; the differences are there… it’s just a guide and for fun…
I was going to buy the 2m Black, but now I’m thinking maybe I should go for the AT33PTG/II😊
The original Technics thin slipmat that came with SL-1200mk7 does a pretty decent job. It's not like cheap sloppy slipmat, it's not particularly bendy and it controls the static pretty well. I mean, it sometimes wants to cling onto record but the record itself remains mostly free of static when lifted unlike Technics 6mm thick rubber mat which caused quite heavy static crackling.
Ben, i don't know why you have been missing in action, but if you can return, that would be great. i hope you are well and just are on a hiatus from this endeavor for constructive reasons. c'mon back.
I lost my mom a while back and kind of buried myself in work... Then I dug back out but have been spending time with my wife and honestly not had the time lately... Thank you for your kind words. :)
@@BensAudioCave Ben, whenever you get the time and will to do this, I can wait. you are missed. i know what it's like to lose a special person, my wife passed in early 93 and I STILL miss her dearly. be happy.
All sounds the same to me. I think it's placebo effect.
This is why we have a divide in hifi. Some people just can’t pick apart the differences and thats fine, some people can and thats also fine. No two people are the same. We have to consider, just because one person can’t hear any difference, it doesn’t mean that it’s the final answer. Sadly this exists and this is where phrases like “placebo” and “snake oil” sometimes come from. The different mats in this video will deal with platter and record resonances differently. Some will allow/prevent the record from moving up and down, some will allow the record to vibrate more than others. Sound smearing will occur at particular frequencies and thats what we hear, it’s subtle but it exists. Some alter how much static is created. If your system is revealing you will hear all this very easily, it’s difficult over youtube. I must admit, the differences are very small in this video but in real life I can tell it will be a lot more obvious. 😄
I'm surprised by the performance difference here. Noticeable jumps in resolution.
At33ptg hands down better. More musical, sweet sound, don't know how to describe it...but pleasant to my ears
This is exactly the demo I needed!! To my ears, the differences were extremely subtle... in fact I kept jumping down to read the comments, I'd hear a "cut," guess which material we were on now, scroll up... and I don't think I was right once. 😂 It's reassuring because the test suggests that maybe I can squeeze a tiny bit more coloration of the sound out of my system with a particular material... but no matter what I use, it's not going to "ruin" the sound. I don't need to go donate plasma to get the latest, greatest material for my turntable.
Hi Ben 👋 I know life has a habit of getting in the way sometimes, but I can see I’m not alone in missing your videos. They were truly excellent. Fantastic comparisons that were recorded well enough to actually tell a difference. Hope you’re doing well, Ben. 🔊✌️🎶
Amazing
I don’t hear any differences. I’ve tried numerous mats. I just like them for their aesthetics.
I was swayed to the 2M black when it came to a cartridge for my rebuilt Transcriptor Hydraulic Reference, SME3009s2 combo. There was no way I was fitting anything square on the end of that arm, on that turntable :).
There is less than 1% difference between mats. Lol.
Thanks a lot! We don't want any fat and ugly sound 🙂 I have the SL-1200GR and being a newbie on the compliance thing, I need to check some recent purchases and certainly before the next purchase. I watched the Italian TH-cam dude take a wack at explaining this and had to check out before the end, but with one and a half of these tutorials under my belt, I think I got it.
Don't use only the original Technics plastic gauge but also the Stevenson protractor because the plastic one does well its job only in ideal position/ distance of tonearm from spindle. When you move the height of tonearm base up and down the tonearm moves slightly to right or left from ideal position so paper protractor let you to check and compensate. Then mind attention: all checks and settings must be done with antiskating set to zero to protect the cantilever and stylus. After alignments reset again the antiskating. For best sound set always the antiskating a little lower then tracking force.
