Full disclosure - I've never been a big fan of the blanketed use of mini-band work comprising hundreds of repetitions of "feel the burn" type exercises for Glute med. Lucky I didn't close the d...

Really like this video. I am in my junior year in America, the most important year for sports recruiting. Strength training is heavily undervalued in non professional environments. It is crazy how much stronger I was after hitting the weights hard for 2 weeks prior to my aerobic base build. I used to be bad at hill workouts, and I now consider them to not always be super painful.

Hello Alex, been trying out the running overcoming isometrics recently and it’s been helping with speed improvement. I have a question regarding your thoughts on single leg squat iso and producing 5-6 times body weight for elite sprinters. When you calculate that are you using your method of single leg squat iso push, an example, a 100kg athlete puts an additional load of 100kg on the bar, and then it’s equivalent to 3x body weight, so if 200kg in on the bar, then it’s 6x body weight? Is it also the same if instead of using weights you just hit 200kg on the force plate? Or is it the 100kg athlete hitting 500kg on the force plate, then you’re saying he’s 5x body weight? Thank you for putting out great content, helping athletes get better. Just a little bit confused of how you calculate when an athlete is at 5-6x body weight for a single leg squat. Is it 6x when the 100kg athlete sl squat 200kg, or 600kg

Thanks for the question mate. The 5-6xBW load is whats measured on the force plate. Therefore, it is inclusive of the mass of the athlete. When we work out what load the athlete has to use in an Iso-Hold (yielding iso) we must minus body mass off of the total force plate output. Eg. 300 kg measured on the force plate in an iso-push for a 100 kg athlete means a 200kg external load. Hope this make sense.

Was the BFR protocol prior to on track work? If so what was time separating training stimulus’? If opposing, is there any perceived issue with administering this protocol with lower volume for an athlete prior to a team sport training session? Aside from the obvious localized fatigue.

Pretty interesting stuff. You say you are exporting raw data for this analysis. I see you have it in powepivot excel. Is your model also built in power pivot with say a cube model or are you pre-processing somewhere else and creating exported aggregated values for this power pivot?

Nice case study. Thanks for that. I still think more strength can be beneficial for speed. One potential explanation in my opinion could be age: they were quite young. Second explanation: Fatigue and delayed transfer effects. 2 strength sessions a week can produce a lot of fatigue which can last up to 2-4 weeks. It could be the case, that because of the fatigue, the speed numbers didn't go up immediately. Greetings from Vienna.

Typical weekly training plan includes 1 or 2 sessions of long rides on the road (up to 2h), 3 to 4 interval sessions on the wattbike. Intervals are either 6s, 30s or 1 min effort. Usually at between 80-90% of max power output for each duration. He only gets to be on the velodrome 1-3 weeks before the competitions as we don't have one in the country.

On a different note, I am an adolescent aspiring athlete and was wondering whether you would happen to know of any similar case studies (that seek to determine sufficient strength level) that work with pubertal males so that it is more applicable to my case?

Hey Jorge, thanks for reaching out and thanks for watching. A new paper just came out this past month and they found about 1.8 x BW back squat seems to be the appropriate level of strength for speed up to 30m. I have been using 1.7-1.8 x bw back squat with my male team sport athletes. Once an athlete gets to that point the program should shift to a power based program.

My max back squats and deadlift are back as it was before and i am doing the same exercises as before as well. However, it seems that i am having a hard time to grab the rim. What do you think seems to be the problem? Should i changed my program or stick to it?

Great case study. Thank you Joel & Alex. I have very similar tendencies as the mentioned athlete. For me, the limiting factor in performance has always been ‘raw’ force production, but ‘grinding’ type of lifting and yielding ISO’s sucked the life out of me. One thing that checked this need for maximal strength (really maximal tension in the muscles) is EMS (electric muscle stimulation) with maximal contractions (up to 7sets of 7s contractions with 2-3’ rest) at critical joint angles /muscle lengths. Always feel strong after good 8-12 sessions, without it draining and inhibiting my power outputs during the training cycle. I’ve coupled the EMS sessions with assisted jumps (with elastic cords, about 30-40% bodyweight reduction), and RFD is going through the roof from session to session. Might try setting up EMS with overcoming ISO’s as well. Anyway, just sharing my thoughts and experiences. Kind regards.

    • @nateraperformancesolutions9716

Thank you! Yes the 500m was total average volume per week. A variety of sets and reps configurations used and also speeds from 17-22 km/hr used.
