CarnEvil Arcade Tutorial - Quickest Method to download and get it working on Windows 10 or 11
Greetings my friends!!!!
So I am glad that so many of you have had success with getting the game to work with my original video back in 2020( th-cam.com/video/9G-XoSPzmcA/w-d-xo.html). However, as time as moved forward I have been getting messages about the game not working on Windows 11 systems. Back in 2020 Windows 11 was just being introduced and the version of Mame that I had for the original tutorial was an older version. Now, Windows 11 is becoming the norm and the older version of mame is just not cutting it.
So fast-forward to today, with the help of some fellow youtubers, we have figured out a stable ROM and Mame system that works well with Windows 11 and most Windows 10 systems. If your computer is older and your running Windows 10 you may still want to stick with the original tutorial. Here is the link: th-cam.com/video/9G-XoSPzmcA/w-d-xo.html
However, this video is a bit different from the normal tutorial and or DIY. This video with explain how to run Mame-0230-64bit with preconfigured standalone systems. No need to move files or anything, just down load either preconfigured CarnEvil Mame System and click on the file.
The only additional step will be to calibrate your mouse or lightgun to the actual one you have plugged in...ie just getting the reticle in the right place.

Carnevil Tutorial : How I was able to get this Classic Midway Game to work on MAME.
Thanks for the help. It’s my favorite game
I've been a Mame user for quite a few years now, and I noticed this game not long after I started using the program. I've wanted to play it ever since, and have dedicated a good amount of time and effort into making it happen. All my efforts were feeble, however, and I never got to experience it though I tried and tried. I finally came across your video tonight and I took the steps you suggested, and at last...I just finished playing it for the first time!!! Thank you so much for making this video! The game turned out to be pretty amazing and it was well worth the wait. I can't begin to tell ya how grateful I am. You rule!
@gregc.9035 Your very welcome, I experienced the same frustration as you, so I wanted to make sure others didn't have to have it so hard. Enjoy!
@@Vincent_Serpico Yeah I don't normally make videos, but if i'd have figured this one out I might've made my first one for the very same reason you did. There's something I wanted to let you know about too. On the mame version I've been using..I was having a strange problem using the mouse as a lightgun on Crypt Killer. The crosshairs would follow the mouse perfectly around the screen, but when you moved it to the left of center and pressed fire..it would fire the shot an equal distance to the RIGHT of center. The effect was the same when I moved the mouse to the right. Up and down didn't have that problem though. What was pushing the dagger even deeper for me was that I wasn't able to use my mouse buttons to fire with. Well I decided to try the game out using this mame version, and I now have 2 games that are running as smooth as can be! You never know just how far an idea might branch out for the next guy when you pass along helpful advice. I hope you have the best of luck in everything you do man.
@gregc.9035 I have found that the game is finicky from system to system and sometimes takes tweaking by the user. Many of the questions I receive about something not working on one system works for others.
I just wanted to say thank you! I appreciate all your help. I finally achieved this effect. Than you!
@@HarryMathisonso glad that my tutorial could help you out. I'd love to see a video clip of your display if you want to send it to my email. DocHollidaysGameEmporium@gmail.com.
hello can you help with the Sound stuttering ?
@jorgejulianvargashernandez5070 the sound can be a number of things from a slow processor to a setting set wrong. I can try to trouble shoot a bit. 1st what is your computer set up?
@@Vincent_Serpico my computer is a lenovo idepad 1i with 64 bits windows 11 and processor intel core i3 I have downloaded the game for Windows 11 from the page. The first time I played it, it sounded good. Then I wanted to play again and the problem started.i dowload the preconfigured versin with 2 mouse
@jorgejulianvargashernandez5070 So before I give you some solutions to try I will preamp with this: I have had other users that try to play this game on laptops tell me they have sound issues. Not sure if it has to do with the graphics card and sound cards in them or what. Some say all is well while others have issues. However, since you said that the game worked fine with the sound the 1st time I'm going to guess that a setting has been set wrong maybe by your laptop trying to match the best sound setting automatically for your system. So you can attack this in two ways. 1st check and see if your laptop changes it's sound settings to try and match the game or go into Mame Configure Menu and adjust the setting that works for your system. That may take a bit of trial and error. Generally the higher the number the more processing power that is needed which leads to lagging. Let me know if either of these work, if not I'll try to trouble shoot some more for you.
@@Vincent_Serpico What should I configure video or sound and what should I move or how much should I put?
Works great!! Although i do have a question, would it be possible to have 2 rotary encoders connected to one U-Trak (one set to vertical other set to horizontal) if you twisted both the grounds together?
@DejoyTV I have not tried it, but the theory seems sound. The Utrack should send the x and y axis to which ever it's connected to. If you try it let me know if it works. Thanks!
@@Vincent_Serpico Sweet, Alright will give it a shot! Just ordered a second rotary encoder will have the results by november 1st! 👊🏼

What did you use to clean off the paint on the ball?
What is the size of ball please ?

Its Wayne again. Still working on the project. Questions your projector in your video does it have keystone? And who was the manufacturer, the make, any info so I can find it. I like its size and I see them on website but when it gets here its bigger and will not fit in the box. Thank you
@waynesmith3427 Wayne, when I created this project I was not trying to break the bank so the projector i used was a small generic one. You can find them on ebay for around $40.00. The important part is to make sure you either have a usb or micro SD slot so you can loop your video. I suggest one that is 1080dpi, to answer your question about keystone, no, mine did not have that , so it's not really necessary. Here is a ebay number to a similar projector that I had used, but as I said any should work that is small enough. EBAY# 296646915785, hope this helps, let me know.
We only have a 10” globe, would this work?
@allaboutthemagic9617 A 10 inch will work, but you will have to scale everything down a bit, and I'm not sure if your opening will be big enough for a full sized mannequin head. You may need to find something smaller.
Yo it boots up and everything the crosshair works the shooting sound effect works but not the shooting animation and I'm not damaging the enemies how do I fix this
@@junkduelist7171 Have you calibrated the reticle?
Now I know what was inside Marsellus Wallace's briefcase.
did all than, but my sounds still laggy windows 11 BTW
@scorpiux123 there is a sound adjustment in mame, you may need to adjust for your computer if it is not set correctly.
I want 2 of these!!!
Great work ! bravo ! I will try with a pico projector. If you love the haunted manson , I am creating an attraction ' the Haunted Castle ' on my channel, if you wanna have a look :)
Hey bud I have windows 10, did everything you said in the first video and it did not work properly with the mouse, it starts shooting randomly... also wanted to try the mayflash with the wii controllers, so far mame reads them as a mouse but in game they don't seem to display at all also the settings wont let me put the imputs for the buttons, any idea on how to help me out? Childhood game and its been a nightmare to get it working... im feeling like giving up 😢
@@derricksosa6355 As far as the random shooting, did you calibrate your mouse with the game? I have not tried to use the wii controllers, I use a light gun with mine. Watch my video on calibrating your mouse as a light gun and see if that does not solve some of your issues.
@@Vincent_Serpico thanks managed to fix the random shooting problem, now I have lagging for some reason 😅 tried running mame on administrator and somehow made it worse...
Great job on this video, this game would be perfect for VR, gonna have to see if EMUVR could somehow work with this.
@ShaggyMcstabby that would be awesome, let me know if I that happens!
Great tutorial. Very well done.
What brand led lights did you use. I’m looking for well insulated non flammable. Thanks
@gingergeorge8887 I have to be honest and say I'm not sure, it was just a generic brand that fit my need. Ribbon style, self adhesive, sound reactive lights trips, Amazon has a countless selection and most will indicate their safety about usage and whether there is a risk of fire.
It was the voice of actress Eleanor Audley that gave Madame Leota such memorable character. Thanks for featuring it in your wonderful recreation of her. She also did the voice of Maleficent in "Sleeping Beauty" and the evil stepmother in "Cinderella." Where would any of those be without her talent?

I stupidly started messing around with the controls before watching this and screwed all the configurations up, lol. I deleted everything and am starting from scratch. Great vid!
How do you make the game run faster? I could barely even play the game because how slow it is.
@scaryhymen What type of computer/processor are you using? What operating system are you using Windows 10 or 11? Usually when someone tells me it's running slow it's because of one of these issues.

WOW, that's so cool! I've been fascinated with Madam Leota since I was a kid (57 now). I've always built things like lit-up coffins and cool spider webs, witch's smoking cauldron over burning coals, but my Golden Grail has always been this. I'm going to attempt it this year but the editing of video is so intimidating! Never been anywhere near that kind of stuff. Got all summer to work on it though. I just love this, it's awesome!

Does the fiber fill rain down fiber? How much did you need for your ceiling for reference?
The stuffing fiber does not fall down, but each panel I put up took between 5-7 bags, really it is going to depend on the size you are trying to cover.

True, that's why I updated them and and made pre configured Mame in my updated video. I left this one up for anyone with older systems.

@Vincent_Serpico I got it to work one singular time. When I first moved ll the files in it launched. But then I exited out to configure the light gun to mouse because I was set on the keyboard. When I re went to launch the gane again, it says now EVERYTIME that I'm missing rom or chd image files for this machine. Even though I HAD IT RUNNING but now it will not. @Vincent_Serpico yes, sme error. Windows11. But I was able to get it to run the first time by using a file downloaded from internet archive that had the carnevil_9.u32, sound102_.u95, and 486_carnevil.u96 files in it. I THINK I unzipped it and put it in a file named carnevil and left the chd files out in the roms folder on its own. Yes... files. I downloaded from a website. 2 chd files which were listed as 3, but only 2 worked. So I threw them both in the roms folder for the hell of it.
i got this to work ONE SINGLE TIME after loading the files where they need to be but after escaping out to change the light gun input to mouse rather than keyboard it has not and WILL NOT load again. I just keep getting the message that im missing rom or chd files. WTF DUDE.

I have not run into that before but it sounds like one of the dip switch settings somehow got turned on. Try starting the game and hit Tab, go to general settings, I believe and scroll down to the dip switches and see if one, specifically 8 has been turned on. If so turn it off and exit. The try to do the calibration again. Let me know if that fixes it, if not I'll try to problem shoot some more for you.

I'll use chicken wire on my next one but I'm thinking of using rope "LED" lights; maybe do a box frame.
That sounds good, I'd be interested in seeing how it turns out.
A few things that may help you and others, especially after I saw the 4/22 update to your comments. the b.l.u.f. is that you need to make sure you get a rom and chd from a rom set version that matches the version of MAME you're running. They should only be downloaded from a site that lists the rom set version. The MAME project is (for good or ill) concerned with getting 100% emulation of every arcade. Which is great, but it means they are constantly updating both the rom dumps (when they get a better or more complete dump of a machine) and MAME itself (to better refine their emulation or accommodate the new rom dumps) When you download from a random ROM site, they frequently will have a set of roms from one particular set (usually a Reference Set like .78, or in your case v1.79) and they won't indicate on their site what version it's from. These roms will work just fine until the MAME project updates their software and the rom becomes useless on all versions moving forward. The people hosting the roms either are unaware they need to publish version information (or that some roms go out of date) or they don't want to take the extra time. By their powers combined, it makes it more than a little rough on people who only care about one system or are unconcerned with minor glitches or missing bits. Fortunately there are places to find 'MAME Sets & Datfiles' that are verified and have version information. Unfortunately it's not kosher to put links to them, but search engines are a thing! Anyhoo, if you want to update to a new version or update your computer and are forced to update to a new version, make sure you get a copy of your rom and chd with a known romset version and download a version of MAME to match. I appreciate the video, more so the follow-up calibration video! Best of luck!
