For anyone having trouble getting the mouse to move/shoot this is what you have to do. Go into advanced options and under input options check mouse and uncheck the joystick. Then you have to calibrate the mouse by starting the game and at the "CarnEvil 1.0.3" whatever screen, press F2 and it will take you to the Diagnostic Screen. Navigate using - and =. Here you can calibrate the left gun by highlighting GUN CALIBRATION and pressing F2. Follow the directions, then when it wants to calibrate the right gun, press A three times to go back to the menu. Then simply go down to EXIT, press 9, and you're all set! Also, don't forget to assign buttons for coin insert and start in MAME settings.
Kaluza, fantastic!!, thank you for the update. I'm not sure why some are having that issue, but thank you for figuring it out. I figured it had to be something with the calibration and a combination with the advanced options. I'm going to add this to my description area for anyone else that runs into this issue. Wow your comment saved me. I was trying to figure out why I couldn't shoot and then I read what you wrote and it worked. These are very specific instructions that most people wouldn't even know about. Even just navigating through the diagnostic screen is opaque.
I've been a Mame user for quite a few years now, and I noticed this game not long after I started using the program. I've wanted to play it ever since, and have dedicated a good amount of time and effort into making it happen. All my efforts were feeble, however, and I never got to experience it though I tried and tried. I finally came across your video tonight and I took the steps you suggested, and at last...I just finished playing it for the first time!!! Thank you so much for making this video! The game turned out to be pretty amazing and it was well worth the wait. I can't begin to tell ya how grateful I am. You rule!
@@Vincent_Serpico Yeah I don't normally make videos, but if i'd have figured this one out I might've made my first one for the very same reason you did. There's something I wanted to let you know about too. On the mame version I've been using..I was having a strange problem using the mouse as a lightgun on Crypt Killer. The crosshairs would follow the mouse perfectly around the screen, but when you moved it to the left of center and pressed fire..it would fire the shot an equal distance to the RIGHT of center. The effect was the same when I moved the mouse to the right. Up and down didn't have that problem though. What was pushing the dagger even deeper for me was that I wasn't able to use my mouse buttons to fire with. Well I decided to try the game out using this mame version, and I now have 2 games that are running as smooth as can be! You never know just how far an idea might branch out for the next guy when you pass along helpful advice. I hope you have the best of luck in everything you do man.
@gregc.9035 I have found that the game is finicky from system to system and sometimes takes tweaking by the user. Many of the questions I receive about something not working on one system works for others.
have wondered how to get this game going - no wonder - great guide - got this to work with both my wii lightgun - for those wondering why aiming might be off - the key i found is make sure you go into the service menu (f2 by default) and then use the + and - keys to navigate - goto gun calibration and follow instructions - i turned on freeplay as well - works a bloody treat and straight into launchbox it goes! thanks again

I have been wanting to play carnevil ever since I just recently thought of it because when I was a kid I saw a machine called carnevil at a hotel or waterpark I forgot but they took it down anyway. Anyways I remember being so scared at just the intro. And now I can actually play the game Thank You!

I had this game running in mame 209 and I went to change some settings with the controls and then I had a chd error and now no longer works. Might have to try this.

This was very simple and easy. I've been waiting to play this game for the longest. Now I can. I just added the specific emulator to mame, my chd file, my Carnevil rom and I added to my prebuilt pc retrobat image. It works directly off the image build. 👍👍👍✌✌✌✌

@@dirkdex Glad it is working well for you. I do not know of any wireless light guns that work well. I know ULTIMARC AimTrak Light Gun works well with no delay, but it is wired. As for as any other CHD games, I will have to let you know. I really liked this game and worked forever to find the right combo of emulator, rom, chd, and file placement to get it to work. Wow I've had this running since about 2013. I didn't even know it was supposed to be hard. Maybe I got lucky because it was old and i've never bothered updating it. I think the hardest thing for me from memory was just finding the CHD and getting it to not drop frames on my old PC.
Well I got it up and running on my windows 11 computer. If this verison of mame in the video doesn't work try mame 196. Even if you get it running your still gonna have to calibrate your controller
Finally after years of trial and failure I can play a working version of Carnevil, thanks so much man. I want to build a custom MAME arcade cabinet with many other games and I want to include Carnevil. Have you used this version of MAME to run other games and if so have you run into any problems?

To answer your question, no, I have not used this version of mama for other games, I use it as a stand alone to play Carnevil. However, having said that there should be no reason why other games would not work on it. Just make sure you have the correct rom version. Let me know if I can help you with anything else. Take care.

My game would crash all the time when trying to boot up carnevil. I used my other version of MAME(0.196)to see if it would work and it did! Another TIP is to go to your options menu then "Device Mapping" and change the light gun settings to MOUSE, this way you don't have to uncheck joystick. Hope this helps anyone. Thanks for the video, been trying to play this game forever!! I also used firefox to download all files, just make sure that it downloads as a zip file and the other .CHD file.

You had to use that older version of MAME (from 2016) bc you had old roms/chds. If you have a current set of roms/chds, you can use the newest version of MAME.

@@Vincent_Serpico -I found the files on internet archive under Mame2003 reference non merged romset. I used it for batocera 37 with mame 0.78 emulator. Not sure if it will run on a stand alone retroarch build 🤔

This game is awesome. Does anyone know how to get 2 players to work using either 2 mice or 1 mouse and 1 gamepad? I can’t seem to get 2 players to work.
I have a question, though my process is not for CarnEvil: can you put in all the necessary game files inside the .zip? Or does this affect the performance of the emulation? For context, I got The House of the Dead 3 working on MAME, but the performance is ridiculously slow, even while having good specs.
Unfortunately, the only way I was able to get carnevil to work was through the process I describe. Although ,I cant say I have ever tried putting all in the zip file. I dont think that will increase performance and honesty knowing what i know about Roms, adding any files that aren't originally with the files may cause it not to work at all. However, if you try it out and it works well, please let me know. I have house of the dead, but had it working on another emulator. I had the same issues with poor performance with Mame.

Well I was hoping this would work. Unfortunately, I just get the screen flash and then back out. Won't load the game. My batocera>share>roms>mame folder has a carnevil folder with the carnevil.chd file in it. Then I have in the same batocera>share>roms>mame folder a carnevil.zip that has the boot.u32 and the sound102.u95. This has made no difference.
i got this to work ONE SINGLE TIME after loading the files where they need to be but after escaping out to change the light gun input to mouse rather than keyboard it has not and WILL NOT load again. I just keep getting the message that im missing rom or chd files. WTF DUDE.

Thanks for the compliment! Yeah, laptops tend not to have the fastest processors or graphics card. I recommend trying it on a desktop if you can and see if the buffering stops. If you continue to have that problem, let me know and I will try to trouble shoot for you. Enjoy!!!

@@jessiv525 I have not tried playing the game on a laptop, so I'm not sure if that is the issue with your calibrating. Are you using the touch pad or a USB mouse?
Hello! Thanks for the guide to get this great game working. I can't seem to get the chd file from your site. Clicking on the site link or opening to a new tab and right-clicking "save link as" produces a FLAC file with seemingly no content. I tried the directions you gave Jesse Lerma, but it leads me to the same point. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

I checked my site and the link seems to be working on my end. Try going to my site DocHollidaysGameEmporium.com then navigate to the Projects Page, then to the Carnevil page and see if that does not make a difference. Let me know.
So that I can try and troubleshoot for you, answer a few questions for me: 1. Just so I'm clear, you go to my carnevil page (dochollidaysgameemporium.com/CarnEvil%20Page%20-%20Doc%20Holliday's%20Game%20Emporium.html) and you are right clicking the text that says CARNEVIL CHD FILE LINK and you are not prompted with an option to download the chd file, correct? 2. What type of system are you currently using? 3. You stated that clicking my link for the chd download does not prompt a chd download to your system. Are you USA based? 4. What type of Internet browser are you using? 5. Lastly, Google seach carnevil chd download and try to download it from another site, let me know if it allows you to get a chd or flac. Super random but Im no tech guy but I was wondering would it be possible to run carnevil on a retried pocket 2? Im assuming it’s a no but I’m just curious
Unfortunately, even though CarnEvil is an older retro game it takes a lot of processing and the average handheld does not have it. Also, I have experimented on a raspberry pi system, but have yet to find an emulator that can run the game successfully. It actually took me quite a while to get the right combination in order to get the game to work on a full size desktop. So unfortunately at this point the answer is probably no, although I can't say that I have tried it on one of those. Sorry

I don't think it will work, I have tried to get this game to work on Mame emulators using retropi, but have had no success. However, if you try it and it works please let me know. I think the game needs more processing power than the handheld possess.
Well, let me see if I can do some trouble shooting for you. Generally if you get that error it means either the rom or chd is in the wrong place. Recheck your file placement, also make sure all files are named the same, and that the extensions are in lower case.
Not sure what is going on with that. Try going to my site directly: dochollidaysgameemporium.com then click on the coin that says Projects and Links, then click on the Carnevil link at the bottom and see if that does not get you to the download. I'm not sure why you are having trouble with the link? I just tested it out and it took me directly to the page? Let me know if you continue to have any issues and I will find another way to get you the chd file.
I got it to work on my low end PC, so it's slow. When I aim the crosshair and shoot, it does absolutely NOTHING. No damage. Is there a way to fix this?
So are you using a mouse to aim and shoot? Or a lightgun? If it is running slow, your computer may not have a fast enough processor and/or graphics card. This can cause problems with game play. However, if you did not set up the mouse with the appropriate settings for your fire button this a lot of the time can be the problem. I have another tutorial on using the mouse as a lightgun and button assignment that should show you what needs to be done. Let me know, if this is not what your problem is and I will try to do some more trouble shooting for you.
@@Vincent_Serpico I'm using a mouse. I can shoot and reload, the sound effects are there. But there are no animations when I shoot enemies. I do absolutely NO damage.
@@glndlbro83 sounds like you may need to calibrate the mouse reticle, if you are aiming and hearing the shoot but not seeing damage, that probably means the shots are off the play area. Recalibrate the mouse using my instructions in the description or the other video and see if that does not correct your issue.
@@Vincent_Serpico Yes it does. Whenever I move the cursor over the levels in the level selection screen at the shooting gallery, the levels are not highlighted.
I have not worked on getting it to work on retro arch, but I just had a subscriber tell me they were able to get it to work. Their name is The Superior 1, you may want to contact them 1st.

@@wednesdaycrow OK, let me see if I can do some troubleshooting. Did you use all my links to get the files?(ie: ROM an CHD)? Make sure that the version of Mame I have linked has not changed. That link is for an outside site. If they changed it to a newer version for some reason, I did not know. If so, is your computer system older? Make sure all the file names match and that all the extensions are in lower case. MAME does not like CAPS for their file extensions. Make sure your file folder holding your CHD files match your ROM name. They cannot be different. Make sure the ROM is in zip form, you do not need to unzip it and place those files in separately. Check these points and let me know if any of it helped. Otherwise, we can talk some more, I have not had anyone that could not get this to work. Generally, its just a simple overlooked step. Thanks..
@scaryhymen What type of computer/processor are you using? What operating system are you using Windows 10 or 11? Usually when someone tells me it's running slow it's because of one of these issues.

@scaryhymen Unfortunately, your computer is a bit older, I looked up the specs and if I'm right your processor only runs at 2.7ghz which may be the reason that the game plays, but is slow. This game although older does need some processor speed to run smoothly.
I did everything you said in this video, and i have the mame version 0.179, but when i try to enter carnevil it says "The selected machine is missing one or more required ROM or CHD images. Please select a different machine" do you know why this is happening?
Sorry to hear your having trouble with it. Let me see if I can help you out so it will work. Did you download the files from my site? Also, make sure all your files are named the same. (ie: rom, chd, and folder must be named the same (carnevil.zip, carnevil.chd, folder carnevil). Also, make sure all extensions are lower case. Mame does not like capitals for extentions.(ie: rom is carnevil.zip, not carnevil.ZIP, or carnevil.chd, not carnevil.CHD), Lastly, make sure the rom stays zipped and is put into the rom folder that way. Let me know if this helps. If not I'll try to trouble shoot some more for you.
@@Vincent_Serpico so when i go into the roms folder in mame, do i only add the chd file in a foler named (carnevil) and a zipped (compressed) folder that contains both the u32 and the other downloaded file along with it named (carnevil)
@@MrBlueHand When you open your ROM folder, place the zipped rom (carnevil.zip), that zipped rom should contain 2 files, there is no reason to ever unzip the rom. If for some reason, when you downloaded, the rom from my site it automatically unzipped it, it needs to be re-zipped. Next create a folder inside the rom folder, name the new folder carnevil,(just like the rom). Place your chd file into this new folder, make sure the chd file is named carnevil, just like the rom. That should do it. Again, make sure all extensions are in lower case.
@@Vincent_Serpico when i download the rom on the website, it already downloads as a zip file, but i have to extract that zip file to get to the u32 and the u95 files. Is that acceptable for mame?

Did you download the correct version of Mame? Generally, I have found that if you have downloaded the CHD Files and the Rom from the link that I provided and followed the instructions, then generally when someone has a problem it is because they are trying to run it on the wrong version. This only works on the Mame version I have listed. Let me know if this is the case, if not let me know and I will try to problem solve for you.
Look in the description and follow the calibration instructions. See if that does not solve your issue. If not let me know and I'll try to trouble shoot with you.

Did you unzip the chd and put it in the right folder? Also, check your extensions, make sure it says chd, also make sure all extensions are lower case. MAME does not work with UPPER case for some reason. Did you download all files and verify of mame from my site? So I have a folder on my desktop labled mame and inside has all the contents of mame extracted in there. In the roms folder I have folders labled and in order like this "carnevil.chd" - inside the folder I have the file "carnevil.chd" "Files in carnevil ROM" - inside is boot.u32 and sound102.u95 "carnevil.zip" - I left this file zipped as it came from your website

So lets make sure all is correct: In Mame Folder - as you said, has all unpacked files from mame. In that folder we have the ROM Folder: This should have carnevil.zip (the rom) and a folder you created called (carnevil) which has the carnevil.chd file. That is correct, yes? Also, you have checked all extensions to make sure they are lower case and the rom, folder, and chd are all named carnevil. No spaces or extra anything or it will not work. So with all the above completed, you are still getting a chd not found message?
Yo it boots up and everything the crosshair works the shooting sound effect works but not the shooting animation and I'm not damaging the enemies how do I fix this
Check the extension of the chd file you downloaded. I have discovered recently that some browsers convert it into our FLAC file for some reason. Firefox does this for some reason, it is best to use chrome. If that is not the issue. Make sure that all your file extensions are in lower case. MAME for some reason does not function with file extensions that are in caps. Let me know if this was one of the issues. If not I'll try to help you figure out what is going wrong.

Let's figure this out together then. 1st did you download the rom, chd, and mame version from my site. 2nd, check your rom, some internet browsers will auto unzip the rom, the rom must be zipped. 3rd, check and make sure all files are named the same, (ie:rom, chd, and the folder you create to place the chd in.) 3rd, make sure all extensions are in lower case,(ie: .zip NOT .ZIP), Mame does not like capitals and will not function. I'm not sure what you are asking? Are you saying that you have an old computer and the version that I have on my website is not working for you? Also, depending on how old your computer is, there could be issues with your graphics card. Also, which version of windows are you running?
@@gerardoodore4757 The 1st issue is that this version of MAME works with a 64bit system not a 32 bit, 2nd your version of windows is pretty outdated, I have not tried to get it to work with windows 7. You may want to upgrade to a 64bit system and to at least windows 10. Sorry, but the program needs a higher processer than you have.
Sorry to hear you are having trouble with it. Let me see if I can help trouble shoot for you. When you say mame crashes, what is it doing exactly? Any error messages or just going to a black screen.
@@Vincent_Serpico Hello! So mame actually crashes if I go into the options menu and change anything, save configuration, and try to return to the "home screen". So, it's not crashing *just* when I try to start carnevil, although it does crash then, too. I think it might have something to do with my audio sample rate being set to 48khz while my computer and preamp are set to 41khz, but every time I try to adjust the MAME audio from 48khz to 41khz and return to menu, it crashes. I've also tried the latest version of MAME but that also crashes any time I try to return to the home screen after changing any settings. I've been told if I run MAME in cmd I could get the exact error message which would help a lot, but I am not sure how to run in cmd? I used the latest version of google chrome to download all the files from your site.
@@SanguineYoru Ok, well from what you described it sounds like it is not the version of mame you downloaded from my site that is the issue, since you tried running another version and had the same result. As you stated it sounds like a setting issue. Now let's figure that out. What are the specifications for the computer you are using? What’s weird is I had this game working on MAME just fine a few years ago on the same computer. I uninstalled it for some reason and got nostalgic for it again (especially around Halloween) and now it crashes. Very frustrating because I *know* it used to work haha
i followed everything and mine doesnt work it says its missing roms or chd but i have them installed its being difficult the files are all there please help
Hey Frosty, sorry your having trouble. I'll try to trouble shoot with you and get you up and running. So to start did you download the files (ie: mame version, rom, and chd) from my site? Also, make sure that all file names match. (ie: rom, chd file, and folder) Make sure your extensions are lower case (example: carnevil.zip, carnevil.chd) Did you keep the rom zipped or did you open it up? Let me know.
@@BADAHAMKARA ok, let me see. Just so I can get a base line...you placed the rom in the rom folder. Created a new folder and named it carnevil and placed the unzipped chd, which is also called carnevil, inside of it. Then took that folder and placed it in the rom folder as well, correct.
@@BADAHAMKARA ok, yes double check, the system is tricky and if even one thing is out of place it tends not to work. I'll check from my end and make sure that none of my downloads have become corrupted. Let me know of you fond a mistake, if not I'll keep trying to help you out.
Should be your Left ALT, but you can go into the MAME settings and change it to whatever works best for you. Are you having some problems? If so let me know.
I have a few followers that have given me some information on how to get it to work on Windows 11, I'm planning on putting up a tutorial on how to get it to work on Windows 11 soon, I'll try to send you some directions a little later on.
@@Vincent_Serpico I just got it working just now. Thanks to some of the comments. I appreciate your work. This game brought back fun memories for me of the 90s when this came out. It's a real treat to play it again. I was able to play it using the version of mame reccomended in the comments section, and also needed to download one additional file as you likely are aware not included on your web page or tutorial.
Is your rom in the rom folder and the chd in a folder within the rom folder named the same? Also, make sure the file extensions are not in caps, mame will not recognize the files if they are...for example(carnevil.zip cant be CARNEVIL.ZIP) Let me know if this solves your problem, otherwise I will try to trouble shoot for you.
@@shm-62u30 oh...sorry probably should have asked that first. Unfortunately, no...the older mame version does not seem to work with it. I have not had a chance to experiment with newer Mame versions. As I said in the video it took me a long time to find the right combination of rom,chd, and compatible mame version that would run the game properly and at the time I was running windows 10. I have had a few people tell me that they were able to get it to work with newer versions of mame. However, I have found that since the game is older that it tends to work better on the older versions and older version of Windows.

@@SuddenElephant I'll send you the ROM when I get home. The CHD is too big to send. You should be able to get that with no issues. Just Google it and download, that can take a bit.
No, it should not be that way at all. Unless you have a really older system and/or a very basic graphics card. I'd be happy to try and troubleshoot for you. Is your system newer or older? I have found ironically that brand new superfast computers cant run this version of MAME because it is an older version.
@@TheKingofgames86 I have not had issues with the audio in the past and others that have had issues getting it to work did not report to me that the audio was off. However, this game is temperamental. It took a lot of trial and error to find a combination that worked for me. Since the game is older you may have to try an older version of mame rather than the latest version, but obviously not older than the one I have it working on. Try going back about 5 past versions of mame and work your way up. See if the audio works on an older version, if not and the game works, but audio is still an issue, we may have to check your audio settings.
Unfortunately, I have had little luck getting it to work on anything. That's why when I finally found this combination that worked with this version of mame I was satisfied. Sorry I cant offer more. If you you do find a way I'd be grateful for the information.

For anyone having trouble getting the mouse to move/shoot this is what you have to do. Go into advanced options and under input options check mouse and uncheck the joystick. Then you have to calibrate the mouse by starting the game and at the "CarnEvil 1.0.3" whatever screen, press F2 and it will take you to the Diagnostic Screen. Navigate using - and =. Here you can calibrate the left gun by highlighting GUN CALIBRATION and pressing F2. Follow the directions, then when it wants to calibrate the right gun, press A three times to go back to the menu. Then simply go down to EXIT, press 9, and you're all set! Also, don't forget to assign buttons for coin insert and start in MAME settings.

I've been a Mame user for quite a few years now, and I noticed this game not long after I started using the program. I've wanted to play it ever since, and have dedicated a good amount of time and effort into making it happen. All my efforts were feeble, however, and I never got to experience it though I tried and tried. I finally came across your video tonight and I took the steps you suggested, and at last...I just finished playing it for the first time!!! Thank you so much for making this video! @@Vincent_Serpico Yeah I don't normally make videos, but if i'd have figured this one out I might've made my first one for the very same reason you did. There's something I wanted to let you know about too. On the mame version I've been using..I was having a strange problem using the mouse as a lightgun on Crypt Killer. The crosshairs would follow the mouse perfectly around the screen, but when you moved it to the left of center and pressed fire..it would fire the shot an equal distance to the RIGHT of center. The effect was the same when I moved the mouse to the right. Up and down didn't have that problem though. What was pushing the dagger even deeper for me was that I wasn't able to use my mouse buttons to fire with. Well I decided to try the game out using this mame version, and I now have 2 games that are running as smooth as can be! You never know just how far an idea might branch out for the next guy when you pass along helpful advice. I hope you have the best of luck in everything you do man.
@gregc.9035 I have found that the game is finicky from system to system and sometimes takes tweaking by the user. Many of the questions I receive about something not working on one system works for others.
have wondered how to get this game going - no wonder - great guide - got this to work with both my wii lightgun - for those wondering why aiming might be off - the key i found is make sure you go into the service menu (f2 by default) and then use the + and - keys to navigate - goto gun calibration and follow instructions - i turned on freeplay as well - works a bloody treat and straight into launchbox it goes! thanks again

Hello, excellent tutorial, I have managed to emulate it on Android Mame (0.139u1) with good calibration and increasing the speed, it works well for me, but the sound is a disaster... do you have any idea how to solve the sound issue? I had this game running in mame 209 and I went to change some settings with the controls and then I had a chd error and now no longer works. Might have to try this.

This was very simple and easy. I've been waiting to play this game for the longest. Now I can. I just added the specific emulator to mame, my chd file, my Carnevil rom and I added to my prebuilt pc retrobat image. It works directly off the image build. 👍👍👍✌✌✌✌

@@dirkdex Glad it is working well for you. I do not know of any wireless light guns that work well. I know ULTIMARC AimTrak Light Gun works well with no delay, but it is wired. As for as any other CHD games, I will have to let you know. I really liked this game and worked forever to find the right combo of emulator, rom, chd, and file placement to get it to work. Wow I've had this running since about 2013. I didn't even know it was supposed to be hard. Maybe I got lucky because it was old and i've never bothered updating it. I think the hardest thing for me from memory was just finding the CHD and getting it to not drop frames on my old PC.
Well I got it up and running on my windows 11 computer. If this verison of mame in the video doesn't work try mame 196. Even if you get it running your still gonna have to calibrate your controller

Finally after years of trial and failure I can play a working version of Carnevil, thanks so much man. I want to build a custom MAME arcade cabinet with many other games and I want to include Carnevil. Have you used this version of MAME to run other games and if so have you run into any problems?

To answer your question, no, I have not used this version of mama for other games, I use it as a stand alone to play Carnevil. However, having said that there should be no reason why other games would not work on it. Just make sure you have the correct rom version. Let me know if I can help you with anything else. Take care.

My game would crash all the time when trying to boot up carnevil. I used my other version of MAME(0.196)to see if it would work and it did! Another TIP is to go to your options menu then "Device Mapping" and change the light gun settings to MOUSE, this way you don't have to uncheck joystick. Hope this helps anyone. Thanks for the video, been trying to play this game forever!!
I also used firefox to download all files, just make sure that it downloads as a zip file and the other .CHD file.

You had to use that older version of MAME (from 2016) bc you had old roms/chds. If you have a current set of roms/chds, you can use the newest version of MAME.
True, that's why I updated them and and made pre configured Mame in my updated video. I left this one up for anyone with older systems.

have you figured out how to make roms for other arcade games run properly. Two in peticular that I need help with are Star Wars Trilogy Arcade and Brave Fire Fighters.

@@Vincent_Serpico -I found the files on internet archive under Mame2003 reference non merged romset. I used it for batocera 37 with mame 0.78 emulator. Not sure if it will run on a stand alone retroarch build 🤔

The link I provided in my description area has a link to the rom. The rom contains both the boot and the sound file.

This game is awesome. Does anyone know how to get 2 players to work using either 2 mice or 1 mouse and 1 gamepad? I can’t seem to get 2 players to work.
I have a question, though my process is not for CarnEvil: can you put in all the necessary game files inside the .zip? Or does this affect the performance of the emulation?
For context, I got The House of the Dead 3 working on MAME, but the performance is ridiculously slow, even while having good specs.
Unfortunately, the only way I was able to get carnevil to work was through the process I describe. Although ,I cant say I have ever tried putting all in the zip file. I dont think that will increase performance and honesty knowing what i know about Roms, adding any files that aren't originally with the files may cause it not to work at all. However, if you try it out and it works well, please let me know. I have house of the dead, but had it working on another emulator. I had the same issues with poor performance with Mame.

Well I was hoping this would work. Unfortunately, I just get the screen flash and then back out. Won't load the game. My batocera>share>roms>mame folder has a carnevil folder with the carnevil.chd file in it. Then I have in the same batocera>share>roms>mame folder a carnevil.zip that has the boot.u32 and the sound102.u95. This has made no difference.
The game still worked on your PC correct? This was just an attempt to use it with Batocera?
i got this to work ONE SINGLE TIME after loading the files where they need to be but after escaping out to change the light gun input to mouse rather than keyboard it has not and WILL NOT load again. I just keep getting the message that im missing rom or chd files. WTF DUDE.
What operating system are you using?

Thanks for the compliment! Yeah, laptops tend not to have the fastest processors or graphics card. I recommend trying it on a desktop if you can and see if the buffering stops. If you continue to have that problem, let me know and I will try to trouble shoot for you. Enjoy!!!

So that I can try and troubleshoot for you, answer a few questions for me:
1. Just so I'm clear, you go to my carnevil page (dochollidaysgameemporium.com/CarnEvil%20Page%20-%20Doc%20Holliday's%20Game%20Emporium.html) and you are right clicking the text that says CARNEVIL CHD FILE LINK and you are not prompted with an option to download the chd file, correct?
2. What type of system are you currently using?
3. You stated that clicking my link for the chd download does not prompt a chd download to your system. Are you USA based?
4. What type of Internet browser are you using?
5. Lastly, Google seach carnevil chd download and try to download it from another site, let me know if it allows you to get a chd or flac.
Let me know the answers to these questions so I can figure this out for you. Thanks
Super random but Im no tech guy but I was wondering would it be possible to run carnevil on a retried pocket 2? Im assuming it’s a no but I’m just curious
Unfortunately, even though CarnEvil is an older retro game it takes a lot of processing and the average handheld does not have it. Also, I have experimented on a raspberry pi system, but have yet to find an emulator that can run the game successfully. It actually took me quite a while to get the right combination in order to get the game to work on a full size desktop. So unfortunately at this point the answer is probably no, although I can't say that I have tried it on one of those. Sorry

I don't think it will work, I have tried to get this game to work on Mame emulators using retropi, but have had no success. However, if you try it and it works please let me know. I think the game needs more processing power than the handheld possess.

Well, let me see if I can do some trouble shooting for you. Generally if you get that error it means either the rom or chd is in the wrong place. Recheck your file placement, also make sure all files are named the same, and that the extensions are in lower case.
when i try to download the chd file, the link just takes me to a page where it looks like a video will play but never loads then greys out.
Not sure what is going on with that. Try going to my site directly: dochollidaysgameemporium.com
then click on the coin that says Projects and Links, then click on the Carnevil link at the bottom and see if that does not get you to the download. I'm not sure why you are having trouble with the link? I just tested it out and it took me directly to the page? Let me know if you continue to have any issues and I will find another way to get you the chd file.
I got it to work on my low end PC, so it's slow. When I aim the crosshair and shoot, it does absolutely NOTHING. No damage. Is there a way to fix this?
So are you using a mouse to aim and shoot? Or a lightgun? If it is running slow, your computer may not have a fast enough processor and/or graphics card. This can cause problems with game play. However, if you did not set up the mouse with the appropriate settings for your fire button this a lot of the time can be the problem. I have another tutorial on using the mouse as a lightgun and button assignment that should show you what needs to be done. Let me know, if this is not what your problem is and I will try to do some more trouble shooting for you.
@@Vincent_Serpico I'm using a mouse. I can shoot and reload, the sound effects are there. But there are no animations when I shoot enemies. I do absolutely NO damage.
@@glndlbro83 sounds like you may need to calibrate the mouse reticle, if you are aiming and hearing the shoot but not seeing damage, that probably means the shots are off the play area. The game starts, but whenever I fire the game does not pick it up, but the sound of the gun plays.

@@Vincent_Serpico Yes it does. Whenever I move the cursor over the levels in the level selection screen at the shooting gallery, the levels are not highlighted.

I have not worked on getting it to work on retro arch, but I just had a subscriber tell me they were able to get it to work. Their name is The Superior 1, you may want to contact them 1st.

So It works for me now but whenever I shoot It shoots way off to the left and not where im actually aiming. Does anyone knw what to do about this?

Your using the the version of mame I have listed in my tutorial right? If not the game won't work.

@@wednesdaycrow OK, let me see if I can do some troubleshooting. Did you use all my links to get the files?(ie: ROM an CHD)? Make sure that the version of Mame I have linked has not changed. That link is for an outside site. If they changed it to a newer version for some reason, I did not know. If so, is your computer system older? Make sure all the file names match and that all the extensions are in lower case. MAME does not like CAPS for their file extensions. Make sure your file folder holding your CHD files match your ROM name. They cannot be different. Make sure the ROM is in zip form, you do not need to unzip it and place those files in separately. Check these points and let me know if any of it helped. Otherwise, we can talk some more, I have not had anyone that could not get this to work. Generally, its just a simple overlooked step. Thanks..
Interestingly my MAME crashes every time i try to open the game so that's my only problem that's keeping me away from playing.

@scaryhymen Unfortunately, your computer is a bit older, I looked up the specs and if I'm right your processor only runs at 2.7ghz which may be the reason that the game plays, but is slow. This game although older does need some processor speed to run smoothly.

I did everything you said in this video, and i have the mame version 0.179, but when i try to enter carnevil it says "The selected machine is missing one or more required ROM or CHD images. Please select a different machine" do you know why this is happening?
Sorry to hear your having trouble with it. Let me see if I can help you out so it will work. Did you download the files from my site? Also, make sure all your files are named the same. (ie: rom, chd, and folder must be named the same (carnevil.zip, carnevil.chd, folder carnevil). Also, make sure all extensions are lower case. Mame does not like capitals for extentions.(ie: rom is carnevil.zip, not carnevil.ZIP, or carnevil.chd, not carnevil.CHD), Lastly, make sure the rom stays zipped and is put into the rom folder that way. Let me know if this helps. If not I'll try to trouble shoot some more for you.
@@Vincent_Serpico so when i go into the roms folder in mame, do i only add the chd file in a foler named (carnevil) and a zipped (compressed) folder that contains both the u32 and the other downloaded file along with it named (carnevil)
@@MrBlueHand When you open your ROM folder, place the zipped rom (carnevil.zip), that zipped rom should contain 2 files, there is no reason to ever unzip the rom. If for some reason, when you downloaded, the rom from my site it automatically unzipped it, it needs to be re-zipped. Next create a folder inside the rom folder, name the new folder carnevil,(just like the rom). Place your chd file into this new folder, make sure the chd file is named carnevil, just like the rom. That should do it. Again, make sure all extensions are in lower case.

Did you download the correct version of Mame? Generally, I have found that if you have downloaded the CHD Files and the Rom from the link that I provided and followed the instructions, then generally when someone has a problem it is because they are trying to run it on the wrong version. This only works on the Mame version I have listed. Let me know if this is the case, if not let me know and I will try to problem solve for you.

Did you unzip the chd and put it in the right folder? Also, check your extensions, make sure it says chd, also make sure all extensions are lower case. MAME does not work with UPPER case for some reason. Did you download all files and verify of mame from my site? I know it's a lot of questions, but I definitely want to help u getting this game going.
@@Vincent_Serpico all files were downloaded directly from your site by way of the chrome browser. So I have a folder on my desktop labled mame and inside has all the contents of mame extracted in there. In the roms folder I have folders labled and in order like this
"carnevil.chd" - inside the folder I have the file "carnevil.chd"
"Files in carnevil ROM" - inside is boot.u32 and sound102.u95
"carnevil.zip" - I left this file zipped as it came from your website

So lets make sure all is correct:
In Mame Folder - as you said, has all unpacked files from mame.
In that folder we have the ROM Folder:
This should have carnevil.zip (the rom) and a folder you created called (carnevil) which has the carnevil.chd file.
That is correct, yes?
Also, you have checked all extensions to make sure they are lower case and the rom, folder, and chd are all named carnevil. No spaces or extra anything or it will not work.
So with all the above completed, you are still getting a chd not found message?

Check the extension of the chd file you downloaded. I have discovered recently that some browsers convert it into our FLAC file for some reason. Firefox does this for some reason, it is best to use chrome. If that is not the issue. Make sure that all your file extensions are in lower case. MAME for some reason does not function with file extensions that are in caps. Let me know if this was one of the issues. If not I'll try to help you figure out what is going wrong.

Let's figure this out together then. 1st did you download the rom, chd, and mame version from my site. 2nd, check your rom, some internet browsers will auto unzip the rom, the rom must be zipped. 3rd, check and make sure all files are named the same, (ie:rom, chd, and the folder you create to place the chd in.) 3rd, make sure all extensions are in lower case,(ie: .zip NOT .ZIP), Mame does not like capitals and will not function. Check these things and then let me know. If one of these are not the issue, I have a few other ideas, that are common mistakes. Thanks

I'm not sure what you are asking? Are you saying that you have an old computer and the version that I have on my website is not working for you? Also, depending on how old your computer is, there could be issues with your graphics card. Also, which version of windows are you running?

@@gerardoodore4757 The 1st issue is that this version of MAME works with a 64bit system not a 32 bit, 2nd your version of windows is pretty outdated, I have not tried to get it to work with windows 7. You may want to upgrade to a 64bit system and to at least windows 10. Sorry, but the program needs a higher processer than you have.

@scorpiux123 there is a sound adjustment in mame, you may need to adjust for your computer if it is not set correctly.

@@Vincent_Serpico Hello! So mame actually crashes if I go into the options menu and change anything, save configuration, and try to return to the "home screen". So, it's not crashing *just* when I try to start carnevil, although it does crash then, too.
I think it might have something to do with my audio sample rate being set to 48khz while my computer and preamp are set to 41khz, but every time I try to adjust the MAME audio from 48khz to 41khz and return to menu, it crashes. I've also tried the latest version of MAME but that also crashes any time I try to return to the home screen after changing any settings.
I've been told if I run MAME in cmd I could get the exact error message which would help a lot, but I am not sure how to run in cmd?
I used the latest version of google chrome to download all the files from your site.
@@SanguineYoru Ok, well from what you described it sounds like it is not the version of mame you downloaded from my site that is the issue, since you tried running another version and had the same result. As you stated it sounds like a setting issue. Now let's figure that out. What are the specifications for the computer you are using? What’s weird is I had this game working on MAME just fine a few years ago on the same computer. I uninstalled it for some reason and got nostalgic for it again (especially around Halloween) and now it crashes. Very frustrating because I *know* it used to work haha

@@BADAHAMKARA ok, let me see. Just so I can get a base line...you placed the rom in the rom folder. Created a new folder and named it carnevil and placed the unzipped chd, which is also called carnevil, inside of it. Then took that folder and placed it in the rom folder as well, correct.

What is the button for reloading the bullets?
If you have not calibrated and/or changed the set up. The default for reload should be your "ALT" key on your keyboard.

@@Vincent_Serpico I just got it working just now. Thanks to some of the comments. I appreciate your work. This game brought back fun memories for me of the 90s when this came out. It's a real treat to play it again. I was able to play it using the version of mame reccomended in the comments section, and also needed to download one additional file as you likely are aware not included on your web page or tutorial.

Is your rom in the rom folder and the chd in a folder within the rom folder named the same? Also, make sure the file extensions are not in caps, mame will not recognize the files if they are...for example(carnevil.zip cant be CARNEVIL.ZIP) Let me know if this solves your problem, otherwise I will try to trouble shoot for you.

@@shm-62u30 oh...sorry probably should have asked that first. Unfortunately, no...the older mame version does not seem to work with it. I have not had a chance to experiment with newer Mame versions. As I said in the video it took me a long time to find the right combination of rom,chd, and compatible mame version that would run the game properly and at the time I was running windows 10. I have had a few people tell me that they were able to get it to work with newer versions of mame. However, I have found that since the game is older that it tends to work better on the older versions and older version of Windows.

No, it should not be that way at all. Unless you have a really older system and/or a very basic graphics card. I'd be happy to try and troubleshoot for you. Is your system newer or older? I have found ironically that brand new superfast computers cant run this version of MAME because it is an older version.

I actually got it to work on the latest version of mame but both versions have audio problems
@@TheKingofgames86 I have not had issues with the audio in the past and others that have had issues getting it to work did not report to me that the audio was off. However, this game is temperamental. It took a lot of trial and error to find a combination that worked for me. Since the game is older you may have to try an older version of mame rather than the latest version, but obviously not older than the one I have it working on. Try going back about 5 past versions of mame and work your way up. See if the audio works on an older version, if not and the game works, but audio is still an issue, we may have to check your audio settings.

There a way to make this work for Retroarch? I'm trying to set up the game within retroarch for convience, but no luck so far.
Unfortunately, I have had little luck getting it to work on anything. That's why when I finally found this combination that worked with this version of mame I was satisfied. Sorry I cant offer more. If you you do find a way I'd be grateful for the information.
