I joined 17 years later..as a Junior Leader..at 16.5 years old yes I always wanted the Army..but WHY did they get rid of Juniors? It gave vocation to many young lads and girls...

The line astern was done the day after the Argentinian surrender on 15th June 1982, before HMS Hermes and other ships headed North to the UK. I was on HMS Invincible

I did Intelligence Corps basic training in 1987. I then did the 'special' course at Loughborough that they mention. I did 15 years before I became an officer in another Corps.

This film sequence compliments another one that is attributed to the Suez Crisis. Great stuff. The relative size difference between the Wyvern and the Sea Hawk is amazing.

Suez crisis?

I saw this film earlier this year on some site or other. The meet and greet on the platform is members of I think 129 troop and will be Easter 1979, I was 126A troop. There are amongst others Martin Kirby who I talked into joining up and Paddy ???? Paddy was in 40 on the Curry Trail in 81 and on the R&R in Hong Kong he was crazy, when we got back to the UK he disappeared, he had gone AWOL and joined the French Foreign Legion. I saw him 5 years later, he had come back to the UK to clear his name/get a paperwork discharge from the Corp. I don't know what happened to him after that though.

Ah, the good old days. Farnborough in 2024 is about as exciting as watching paint dry with only a handful of aircraft on static display and the bulk of it being nothing but identikit tradeshow booths crowded by self-important marketing and sales types.

Amazing how many of these jobs are now carried out by civilian contractors.

I should show this to my dad, who's 85 now. He spent the 60's and 70's in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was one of the many people who don't get the glory, but ensured that everything functioned. In his case, he was the electronics technician who kept the gadgets running. He was good at it, and kept the same posting for most of his time. Nobody wanted to let him go. He was given a list of what's not working properly, and left to handle it. Years later, though not in the military, I have a similar position. There's no glory in it, but I keep things rolling. The stories he and I swap sound alike. Usually about fixing a mistake made by some bone head.

It is very different these days. Most army officers go to university for a three or four-year degree, sometimes on an army bursary, before going do Sandhurst.

The good old days, when britain was a great country to be proud of.

This reminds me of my experience of officer training in the 1990s before Labour came into power and made it more "progressive." The army was unashamedly elitist then which made it a very effective fighting force despite it's rather stuffy culture. Saying that, the mannerisms of that regimental recruiting officer at 10:25 seemed more in time with World War 1 than then 1980s!
