Designer Explains: how PRO Industrial Designers Copy
Whether we are talking about a remake, a lookalike or distant cousin, Industrial Designers frequently reference and repurpose ideas when designing new products. We'll discuss the different ways Industrial Designers copy and one instance when it's strongly encouraged to steal.
I use the words copy and steal interchangeably. Steal comes from the Picasso quote “ Good Artist’s borrow, Great Artist’s steal” but Picasso wasn’t the first artist to say it. T.S Elliot said “Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal.” (1920), and Igor Stravinsky had his own take (A good composer does not imitate; he steals,”) More recently, Bansky claimed the statement and literally carved the words in stone.

    thanks for the vid. perhaps for the 'ugly' remote, (as a designer (industrial) and mech engineer of over 40 years) I suspect the product was designed by an engineer without design input. I also believe that particular cultural values and acceptances (affordances) are designed subconsciously into the product based on the designers own values. this is what leads me to believe an engineer designed the housing (aesthetics). designers are generally taught to ignore their own influences, engineers are not. the visual and aesthetic complexities of the remote are culturally based as are many designs that stem from China. just a couple of thoughts.

    ahhh I’m unsure if you will see this but as I explore career choices I’ve grown very interested in industrial/product design! I do have a question though, is engineering involved? Or at least knowledge of it? I feel like the school I am considering doesn’t really have a focus on too many of the technical aspects that I see on portfolios.

    • @DesignplusMorna
      @DesignplusMorna 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You probably won’t learn any engineering in your ID program. That is ok because ID brings a different skill set to product development than engineers. Having said that, it is helpful to learn about engineering but this is something you can learn on the job. Depending on what you are designing, there could be a lot of engineering involved in which case you would work with Mechanical and/or Electrical engineers or there could be no engineering involved. When you say “technical aspects”, what are you referring to?

    • @neaa1928
      @neaa1928 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@DesignplusMorna ah so when I say “technical aspects” I mean the math and science that goes behind products! like when I look at portfolios people will have these in depth renders and understandings of whichever product they’ve designed that I know must require knowledge beyond just design and the complexity I’m seeing intimidates me a little. the level of understanding just seems so beyond what’s going to be taught. I appreciate you taking the time to respond to me! the job market and potential future of this field have been weighing very heavily on me but your videos have been very encouraging esp for someone who’s a chronic over thinker! and if you don’t mind me prying what fields have you designed in and how have you been able to branch out to design in those fields if they’re diverse? I guess another question that goes along with this is me wondering just how versatile this field is? I don’t want to box myself in and would love to hear your thoughts as someone who’s been in the game for so long!

    • @DesignplusMorna
      @DesignplusMorna หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can’t speak to specific requirements for getting into an ID program after studying Graphic Design. You would need to look into the specific programs. My advice is : if you want to get a job in ID, go to school for it. If you enjoy thinking in 3D, you will enjoy ID. ID and Graphic Design are complimentary skill sets so it’s great that you are interested in both. It’ll be an advantage for getting a job.

    This video is a fantastic place to start if you're thinking about majoring in Industrial Design! Great work Morna! I'd add the piece of advice I wish I'd had before entering this field is that you'll have much less flexibility on where you can live as an industrial designer than if you were in something like nursing, sales, or accounting. If you're in a field that's in literally every town, you can pretty much throw a dart at a map and work on finding a job in that town. Or you can decide you'd like to move closer to family no matter where your family is located. In ID, especially if you are specialized in a certain industry, you'll probably only have a handful of potential employers, and many of those will likely be concentrated in California, Washington, or New York City. If you don't love the idea of living in major cities in California or in New York City, you'll need to be very flexible about where you live. The result is you'll move nearly every time you'd like a new job. I've had three salaried ID positions since graduating and those have all been in different REGIONS of the country, not just different states. It can start out exciting, but for me has become a major downside to this career especially after getting married. All things to consider when choosing a career that aren't often talked about.

    Thank you so much! I really like how you included the sections about Patents, IP, and 'Copying' not just for the sake of skill-building, but Iterating with Intention and Transforming what's already out there into something new and worthwhile. Bc ain't nothing new under the sun 🌞, but by combining and being mindful about how we connect our References / Inspo we can really evolve our goods + services. Your vids and pacing and edits are really well done, perfect depth and video length plus I like the typeface that you used at 5:12. (What's the typeface? thx) Keep it up! Thank you for making this! I really enjoyed the pacing, appropriate level of detail, and how you delivered the content. Just subscribed and looking forward to learning more about what it's like in the industry 🚀 Quick question: What advice would you give a recent grad who wants to pivot into Industrial Design from a jack-of-all trades design program? Context: I graduated in June 2023 from Stanford with a B.S. Engineering with specialization in Product Design & I've been applying for almost a year now but no luck. At Stanford, the Product Design major was a program within the Mechanical Engineering department, so we did the MechE core sequence, with upper division "Design Thinking" courses from the d.school. The program was mostly Digital, business, UI/UX and Design Research-focused bc of the Pandemic and integration with Silicon Valley, less hands-on/sketching or traditional ID content. The cool thing about the program is we get to experience a variety of design disciplines, but Industrial Design, Architecture, and Transportation design are what I'm most keen on but least experienced in. I hope you have a nice week :)

    excellent explanation Morna. as an industrial designer, the times i’ve designed alone [without referencing other products] i’ve received comments that the concepts seem uninspired. and that’s because they were. take inspiration, especially with a wide net. you’ve only stolen a design or an idea if the end result is the same. appropriation, for the most part, is key to human progression.
