    Have you come across any good examples of "form follows function"?

      One product that comes to mind is the new trend of contour dresses. It will have two colors, usually a vibrant, base primary color & the torso of the dress will have a slimming black colorblock along the waist. It streamlines the female figure into an illusory hourglass shape by the contrast of its base color & the black color block on the waste.
      The design attempts to flatter female form exponentially with its emphasis of curves. I don’t know if the example fits perfectly but it reminded me a bit of it.

    Hey Morna, I just want to say that as a User-Centred Design student, your videos are so helpful to me, as we are not taught enough Industrial Design history and principles, unfortunately. I can even say that I've learned more about ID history and theory than I did in Design School. Thank you for putting so much efforts in your videos! 💓

    As an artist myself, I believe the Form Follows Function quote is the most important rule when creating characters from imagination.

    Enjoyed watching this, i visited my physical therapist, and could observe that all the chairs were designed with the purpose of keeping the back straight. I thought this was a good example of form follows function.

    Really glad that to discover this beautiful channel, I like how you’re delivering the info & examples in sort of spontaneous or less complex ways, this really shows how well informed you’re about design, thank you & btw for me I would choose the traditional Arabic Coffee set which is in my opinion showcase the form follows function beautifully, it contains small coffee cups “size of espresso shot cups” and coffee boiling pot with slightly long arched tip to pour the coffee without any splashing because it gets narrower to the end so coffee pours dynamically perfect each time ! 🐚

    5:43 I cannot understand how the makers of digital photo frames could miss the mark on the form follows function principle by so much. Their function is to display multiple still photos of varying aspect ratios in two orientations. While their fixed rectangular form is more suited to individual photos with a single orientation or fixed, horizontal only content such as video or computer apps. A more geometrically suitable shape for still photos would be square. It is the only shape that can contain all still photo aspect ratios and both orientations in the same size per aspect ratio. Think analog slide projection screen.

    Really video. Thanks a lot. I have one question for you. Do you think the famous Marshmallow sofa 1956 by George Nelson and Irving Harper follows this rule? The round cushions came before the idea of the sofa and Herman Miller stopped production after some issues of stability and cost of production. Form not follow function in this case? Love to hear from you. Best wishes

    The Table Noir cutlery designed for restaurant Barr in collaboration with Snøhetta is a product that has form and function into the considerations in the Design.
    The cutlery has a stonewashed sruface inspired by the Barley structure if you look at in a microscope, but it also have functional purpose since the patina that it will get when its used just will make it continue look as it original is ment to - so it will have a longer lifetime.
    The cut in the handle is an enlarged barley structure to create a connection to the overall aesthetics at Restaurant Barr but it also helps your thump to hold the handle better.
    It can be seen here where you also can read about the designstory and thoughts to form and function:

    Interesting examples, thanks!
    Here is a question I have: I was looking for "function follows form", and most of the videos, like yours, are inverted: "form follows function".
    Why is that? Are they actually two different techniques? Or would it be just a preference to name it?
    Well, another example is a baby's milk bottle, the one that changes its color in order to aware of the hot temperature of the milk. As I understand, the function is, first, to prevent, then, the form to prevent results in a changing color milk bottle.
    What do you think, Morna?

    I feel like a moron, lol. I understand what "form" "follows" and "function" mean. Put together, I drew a blank. I understood the concept but, I felt lost. I un-confidently understand it now. But, cannot invent any yet?

    • @DesignplusMorna
      @DesignplusMorna  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, no! .. don't feel like a moron. The phrase "form follows function" was first coined by the architect Louis Sullivan. One of his student's Frank Lloyd Wright, massaged it a bit by saying "Form and function are one." I mention this because sometimes it's the combination of words that sound funny together, especially the word "follows". Beyond the words, what lies at the heart of this concept is the relationship between the form of an object and it's purpose (or function).
      Personally, I find it easier to think of the "Form follows Function" concept as a question - "How does the form of an object show it's purpose?".
      For some reason, asking myself this question makes it easier to describe the relationship between form and function.

    Shouldn’t it be “function follows form”?
    Since function depends on form, the statement should be the opposite

    Is that a watering can tho? The end should force the water to sprinkle over the plant, not like pouring water like tea. 😂 The spiral eraser is also not a good design. It rolls over. Rectangular erasers have beveled edges to actually erase small areas.
    That spiraling building? How do you go from the first floor to the fourth floor? Would you spend time and effort going through 2nd and 3rd floors? Oh the pretense of these so called 'designers' and ' architects'

    • @DesignplusMorna
      @DesignplusMorna  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many watering cans pour like a tea pot. "Sprinkling over a plant" does not define a watering can. Erasers with beveled edges work for some time and then the bevel is worn down. That is the purpose of the spiraled bevel edge. Keep in mind the building is an art gallery. The purpose is to pass through the building to see the art work. Typically the building houses one show by an artist or one cohesive show, so if a visitor wants to see the show, it makes sense to pass through all floors. For example, if a visitor went from the first floor to the fourth floor they would miss a chunk of the show. Imagine going to a movie and having them skip to the 45 min mark. It doesn't make sense. This building is not like an office building or mall where one might go to a floor for a specific destination.

    • @robertanthonybermudez5545
      @robertanthonybermudez5545 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DesignplusMorna many poorly designed watering cans pour water like that. Garden and agricultural watering systems work efficiently by sprinkling only the needed amount.
      Erasers with beveled edges can be used in a way to maintain their bevels.
