Back on the board after a 25 year break and YouTubing the whole thing.
Are you skating enough?
Pushing yourself to improve and do things outside of your comfort zone is a big part of skateboarding , I think the more comfortable you get with new things you have learned it's very easy to settle and not continue pushing forward, sometimes to the point where you forget what its like to be in unknown territory and when those situations arise you forget how to deal with them.
This is something I look into a little deeper in this video and I hope it sheds some light for others who are struggling to push a little further.
Let me know what you think in the comments section below and even ask me and questions you may have,
Here’s some other videos about how I learned certain tricks and you'll find them here if you want to check them out:

Grinds Over Pool Steps
มุมมอง 22421 วันที่ผ่านมา
Pool coping grinds have got to be one of the most satisfying things to do on a skateboard, that sound never disappoints. In this video I was practicing my backside grinds over the pool steps and by frontside grinds with the hope of eventually getting them over the steps too. I hope you enjoy the video and love that sound as much as I do. Let me know what you think in the comments section below ...
Learning to Smith Stall on a Skateboard Mini Ramp

I've always wanted to learn how to Smith grind, and I think before getting the grind, I need to learn how to get into it. The perfect way is to learn how to Smith stall / Smith stop. So I decided to try to learn, and it turned out to be quite an epic journey. This video details the process and how difficult it turned out to be, I hope you find the process informative and maybe it will help you ...

awesome dude, if you take up jogging and lifting on your off days your stamina will get way better too and you'll be able to skate more often
I wish I had the energy for that too but I need some time for recovery and it just so happen the 12 hour days that I work means my time is pretty well taken already. But one of the main reasons I started skating again was for the exercise. I don’t enjoy regular forms of exercise like running or gyms so I wanted to do something I enjoy so much that it doesn’t feel like exercise.
Yewwwww!!! Killing it! That park looks amazing! Jealous!
@@sshouser31 thanks man 👊🏼 it’s pretty nice, lighting could be better for my old eyes but I can’t complain really 😜
Hardly any skate shops sell them, had to take a punt on some Amazon specials to see if this works.😮
It’s probably a case of not many shops stocking them because not many people ask for them, seems to be a strangely misunderstood thing. They do come included with some bearings but not most.
Definitely not skating enough, but those are realities of life for me between work and family. I'm not going backwards, but also feeling shitty at times going the next time and knowing that I need an extra hour just to get going again... That said, I LOVE skating and the mind-clearing it does for me, and the sense of achievement when I get a new trick or even just a variation and got my heart rate up and worked up a sweat... And walked out of the park with my own two feet! ;)
@@darude I absolutely agree it’s a real tough one trying to fit enough sessions in with a busy life too. But it’s great if you can keep in the right side of it and always walk away feeling like you have had a really good time. My working hours mean that I miss a lot of potential opportunities but that just means I also have to make the time I do get more worthwhile. Learning something new is a great boost to push you on to the next one too. So many times when I’m not skating all I can think about is the next opportunity 😜👍🏻👊🏼
Skating is one of those things that I don't need a timer for. I honestly feel like I can condense half a week of progression into a session, sometimes. That being said, progression is relative. It changes from person to person. What I want out of my skating is a highly personalized thing. So it's possible that someone who skates more hours, does in fact progress more. But they also could be progressing less per hour, at a worse rate, or even not being as efficient as I might be. Because skating does feel taxing, especially on the plantar fascia for me. The muscles also need time to recover and put on mass, when you're jumping onto higher and higher stuff. Sometimes progression is just doing a trick over and over and trying different stupid stuff until you figure out what works, that's almost like a interrogation. Because if someone could just tell you what you're doing wrong, or if you could review the footage, it would make life much easier lol. I hate reviewing footage while I'm in the zone, and most times I refuse to do it, so there's the extra investment of time when you learn going by 'feeling the board under you'. Instead of using a third-person perspective tool. There's also instruction, if you don't know how to practice, then it's exponentially harder. Skaters actually do better with some light coaching, which cuts down on time needed for learning and recovering from injuries. I loved skating growing up, but I never had someone with more experience to coach me. The first time I found out a guy I grew up skating with was teaching kids, it was mind blowing. How come he never actually skated with us?! He was also at the park chasing the pros and getting better lol.
Oh yeah its absolutely an individual thing and everyone is different and I didnt mean My comments to be based on comparing yourself to anyone else after all (and quite selfishly my channel is all about Me 😂 ) But I do draw on some observations of some people who get down on themselves about not progressing while at the same time don't put the work in or others who assume that My progress albeit slow has somehow come to me easy. Age and agility also has a huge impact on the speed we can learn and or retain stuff which is what i was touching on in the video. Reviewing footage is one thing but actually making your body do what you want it to even when you know very well what you are doing wrong and what you should be doing, this is where even coaching cant always help. So yeah as with everything there are many many facets to consider and we can only pull from our own experiences and observations but thats why i thought it would be a good talking point.
@@NeilHesterSkateboarding I saw another one of your videos recently about the Dunk highs! I like those shoes, I skate dunks too a lot. And yeah, I like what you said about putting in more work than others and still not progressing sometimes haha. I think I compared myself to my friends growing up, but they'd just been doing it for much longer. I'm 33 now so I stopped skating for like 15 years at some point, and I feel much stronger (but definitely not newer) than I used to be in many ways. But if I'd never stopped, maybe progression would have come to me, perhaps. I really enjoy the pace of my skating now, though. It's better to not be the young guy, you wish you had the youth, but the experience is priceless! And yeah seeing footage doesn't always help! Sometimes you need to level up your skill a little bit, Hahaha. At my age I am pretty strategic about how I conduct business. I've gotten into doing some squats (sets of 25) and stretches before skating, but I don't like doing them in public so I do them at home and I feel like it helps me when trying to do more difficult tricks than I have done before. Of course some food I might eat feels more sluggish while protein foods make me feel like it's all working, as I want it to. Also I drink like 2 glasses of water right before going out to be optimally hydrated (the muscles love this) and skating my best. But don't drink the water too early, it has to be at the door, or you'll be peeing by the time you get to the park lol ...Also, I get burned out on things but I already know that. I have only so much energy before old-man mode kicks in sometimes.
@@haroldcampos9661old man mode ? Oh you just wait, you have no idea what’s coming 😂

I feel someone is having a go at me for only skating 2 hours a week 😂. Neil I struggle on Saturday morning after my 2 hours at Better on Friday evening but I’ve got 9 years on you. Hope to get a few more hours in over the festive period. Let me know if Old guys night is still on over Christmas. If so I’m definitely considering going. Have a good Christmas and see you soon 👊🏻🛹
🤣 it’s only really an observation of my own experience 😉 just like going to a gym the more you do and more often the easier it gets, that goes for recovery and getting going again too. I know it gets harder as you get older but I think it’s still possible to power through and gain from it. The pain puts you off going again so soon but if you go for it you’ll loosen up once you get moving and hugely benefit from it. I won’t be around for OMN I’m out of the country for Christmas but have a good one and I’ll see you again soon 👊🏼

@@PipsClips thanks 👍🏻 it’s definitely a challenge but I’d really like to skate it more and get a bit more comfortable with it, I think it’ll help My vert ramp skating.
Absoluute truth. You cant just expect to pickup its gotta he familiar. Think about how much ams and pros skate to getwhere they are ability wise. Its cool if ypu dont wqnt that. I dont. But to be happy with progressing. . You gotta get uncomfortable the body will follow the mind. I can go on forever. Endless battle. "You never master skateboarding - mark hubbard
@@marissac870 yeah absolutely 👍🏻 you can’t ever learn enough, there’s always something else just around the corner. It does take me way longer to learn things but the reward worth it. @@dillinger1980 Thanks very much 👍🏻
nice skating man! I enjoy your thoughts and approach!
Thanks 👍🏻 I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it !
Awesome skills mans !!
Thanks! 👍🏻
Spot on Neil…. Skateboarding is all about repetition! Unfortunately loosing tricks is something that will starts to happens as we get older. I guess we will need to reinvent/adalpt how we skate so that it continues to be fun. I also think that it’s super important to know how to pick our battles to avoid injuries. I wish I could skate more often. At the moment I need at least a couple of days to recover before I can get anywhere near a skate again. 😂😂😂
Cheers Ronaldo 👍🏻 Eventually age will catch up but I’m no where near ready to start slowing down, I’m still improving so I’m still better than I’ve ever been before I just have to remind myself to keep practicing the things I want to keep. I’m not even worried about injuries at the moment because I’ve not had anything happen that’s slowed me down more than a couple of months. So as long as I keep stretching and moving I hope to continue that way. Also part of what I was taking about with making sure to skate several times a week means I don’t need so much recovery time, often I’ll skate 2 or 3 days in a row and I truly believe the more you keep going even if you ache a lot you loosen up pretty quick and the pain goes away until the next day and then you just do it all again just like you would if you were a regular gym user, you just have to push through it. Well that’s what works for me anyway.
Well done for pushing yourself to overcome you fear. The bowl crete sounds lovely, my kind of surface.
Thanks 👍🏻 it’s a continuous process I just have to keep reminding myself to exercise those boundaries and keep pushing them. It’s a pretty good surface there now so I can’t really complain and it’s a good winter refuge when it’s dull and wet outside.
✨Bravo great work and thank you for this video. I'm glad that somebody did this. You're the only one that hit the spot that everyone else is too scared to do, how many steps did you accomplish, Rad man you're Awesome! 😎🤙🍀 Thanks 👌😸🍄
Thank you I’m happy to hear you found it helpful 👍🏻
Excellent review. Their product has a great bang-for-buck reputation in the snow world. I bought an Outdoor Master bike helmet a while back and I rate it, really great product for the price and it performed well in Virginia Tech's (US uni) destruction tests. But one thing that bothered me was the number of quick, low-quality reviews by small channels who all basically said it is the greatest thing ever; just seemed a bit sus. In contrast, I appreciate review depth and cons you give.
Thanks very much. I really want to be honest with my reviews i feel like there's so many that are just saying what the manufacturer wants just so they get more fee stuff, that's really not what I'm about and i also only agree to review things i'm actually interested to know more about myself. I've reviewed a few helmets now and they all have their own little quirks so i feel like there's always something specific to say about each one.
Love this video. Great reflection. I think it’s a bit like golf. No one goes golfing with one club. You wouldn’t want to use the same club as a driver that you would as a putter. I think having multiple sets of wheels in the bag is essential for folks like me and yourself. The wheel that performs best for you on skatelite is unlikely to be the wheel that performs best for you on polished concrete etc. I have 6 wheels in my rotation that I used based on the park I’m riding. The majority of people who skate just don’t care or they don’t understand why they like what they ride or they can’t afford 10 different wheels
Thanks ! Yeah I can see the parallels you are drawing there. Although I personally was keen to find one wheel to rule them all so I didn't have to ever change wheels to suit where i'm skating because its just time wasted i'd rather spend skating. I think I was pretty much there with the spitfires but am always keen to keep my eye on whats out there just in case something better comes along. I've settled on Bones SFT 84B 60mm which are every bit as good as spitfires but with a slightly faster feeling on smooth concrete. The X99's were just too soft for me so i now just keep them in my bag in case of emergency. I'm a firm believer that you can "learn your wheels" and become familiar with their characteristics so you can actually skate just as well with any of the higher tier options with just a little bit of exposure. I proved that to myself by switching over to the bones 84b after initially thinking they were too hard and slippery on wood, now i know exactly how to ride them and i never slip out unless i make a silly mistake. I used to have 2 boards (one for vert and one for boles and mini ramps) but it just became a pain to manage and I got used to riding the mini ramp bowl board on vert ramps too. I think our minds are clever enough to adjust to anything within reason and i prefer sticking to just one setup if i can.
Awesome Neil!
Thanks 👍🏻👊🏼
I wear mine to work , as a "workboot" , at first they are not comfortable ,but once you break it is fine. I like the wear away color under it

@@friscotecsk8s119 cool thanks 🙏🏻 I saw you wearing some Adidas forum Hi in one of your videos didn’t I ? How were they for skating ?
@@NeilHesterSkateboarding I love, love, love the ADIDAS. I have a Wide foot so it will be great to get some Ws. These are already wider than most. Went back to my Vans and hated them need some moon boots.
@@friscotecsk8s119cool that’s good to hear. I have some all black ones I bought a few years ago that I haven’t tried yet.
I really like the look of those. It has that 80’s vibe to it. I wish they made it in different colours as well. I have some Eric Koston high top and even after a couple of months wearing it I still haven’t been able to skate them as it still feels too hard. Nice video… great bags of tricks at the end! 👊🏼
Thanks Ronaldo 👍🏻 I’m sure the other regular SB Dunk HI’s will skate nicely too but I’m not sure I’ll find out anytime soon now that I have all these to get through 🤣 there’s lots of nice colours that come and go so maybe you’ll find something you like in this style. For me once I’ve broken the toes in on these I wear them for 3 or 4 session skating and they finish breaking in much faster so the skating really helps speed up the process.
Hey shout out to Pawnshop Skate co. They are a staple of skating in Covina CA. Donovon Piscopo, John Fitzgerald, Joe Campos (they skate for Hockey) came from there. Great shoe but I don't skate mine, I wear them with a nice pair of chinos or khakis. Great video. Please keep them up.
Cool thanks 👍🏻 they definitely put together a great shoe ! I think when yours are battered from normal wear they’ll be just right for skating so you’ll get a second life out of them 😉
With you on the hi-tops have skated in Converse since the 80's and like the security of the high-top. Used to wear through the toe cap quite quickly though due to knee slides in pools / bowls and even started experimenting with pva glue / epoxy to extend the life of the toe cap back in the 2000's.
Cool 👍🏻 I’ve smooshed shoe goo on lots of toes before but now I just look for something tough enough from the get go. I had some vans highs that actually had some fairly padded ankles but great toes caps that were designed for BMX’ers that I reviewed on the channel some time back and they worked out very well too, much better than any other regular vans I’ve skated in before, they actually had a cupsole too which is probably why I liked them.
heres an interesting tale..... i always had very fast wheels and was a lazy/bad pumper.... i randomly got some very small soft wheels and had to really get good at pumping.... if one wants to improve pumping try ride smaller sofer wheels for a few months then go back to your regular fast wheels. My favourite/usual wheel is spitfire formula 4 56mm. When I was a child in the 80s I just loved the Slimeball wheels graphics, would go and stare at them in the skate shop, so now I have bought a set but I dont actually skate them. One day I might get an 80s set up and put them on it.
Yeah I can sympathise with that, small wheels feel like trying to skate through custard 🤣 pumping efficiency is very much underrated! I was a big fan of the Santa Cruz wheel graphics back in the 80’s too and they never wore off like they do now due to laws on chemical toxicity I believe. I have some 30 something year old bullet 66’s and the graphics still look like new !
@@NeilHesterSkateboarding ahhh the Bullets.... I also liked the 'Ollie' wheels and the Hosoi Rockets. The Schmitt Stix 'street saws' were pretty cool too.... Santa Cruz Speed wheels.
@cameraop8210 👍🏻 the Ollie’s were tracker iirc .
Grind over the steps! That big bucket list trick on so many radars! That's a lovely one there. Has decent transition around it. It probably feels whippier than it looks, though. Great video, Neil!! 🔥
Thanks 👍🏻👊🏼 it’s a nice one to learn on, it’s super steep and pretty much vert in about 3.5 to 4ft depth so dropping in is a real whip/whoosh but you get used to it and the steps aren’t too intimidating. There’s a decent boards width above them to give you enough space to roll through if you are not grinding so overall it’s a good training ground.
I take it your coping repair is holding up. 👊🏻🛹
The whole bowl has just been totally redone , I’ve not been yet to try it out but word is that it’s great 👍🏻 maybe my slam video made a difference 🤔🤣
@ afraid of a lawsuit 😂.
@marcelboogaard3809 🤣
Awesome explanation
Thanks I’m happy to hear you found it useful 👍🏻
that place looks awesome!
👍I think its going to be a pretty good winter refuge, last year i didn't get much pool skating in over the winter but maybe i will this year.
What’s the other bowl like? This place looks great. A 2 hour drive from Southampton. Very doable 👊🛹❤️
The shallow end is about 4.5ft with a nice transition, the deep end is about 7 or 8 ft and a little bit of vert so it feels big and you need to go really fast so the two ends aren't very well matched in my humble opinion. I dont really ride it as I like the pool so much, sometimes i ride the shallow end like a miniramp for a bit, theres also a nice super wide mini ramp like the one at Pitt St in Portsmouth if you know the one i mean. Overall its well worth a visit but time it well because it can get quite infested with scooter kids, luckily they aren't allowed in the pool :)
@ I am at Pitt Street quite often. Great park with my favourite curb for board slides. Thinking about going to XC next Monday if the weather is wet. Fingers crossed for a quiet one!
@ cool 👍🏻 Tuesday night is skateboards only and there’s a decent crew of older guys riding the pool. Sunday mornings is good for a pool session too.
Looking good Neil, you've got those shallow end RnR, just need the commitment to stay on. Anyone remember / skate the Hemel skatepark (with pool, halfpipe and moguls) that was on this site back in the 70's? Very protective locals I recall lol
Thanks, *spolier*: I have actually got a couple of rock n rolls since, you're right though, as ever it was mostly commitment and you have to do it all a lot faster because of how tight it is. I wasn't around for what was there before as i came from much further south about 20 years ago and only started skating again 7 years ago after over 25 years off the board.
@@NeilHesterSkateboarding Yes, knew you were too young which is why I asked if 'anyone' remembered. On the site there was a skate-park, then the ski dryslope expanded (I learned to snowboard on it, but had to argue with the manager to let me on the slope!) Hoped there might be some old timers still out there! lol
I've been looking everywhere for the smiths stabilisers but cant find them in stock anywhere in the uk anymore ☹️
Unfortunately I think they are discontinued, however I don’t think I could recommend them as a good option now. I tried them again and promptly fell on my wrist causing a lot of pain. In the years I’ve been wearing the Flexmeter ones that has not happened once. Every time I go down on my wrist I just get back up and carry on.

Thanks 👊 They are coming along .
I have a similar approach,... when i first learnt rock n roll, i did like 20x getting the board to just rock and puposefully running off safely, then I did like 20x where I rocked then I lifted the board and turned and when I was about 45 degrees away from the coping I'd safley run off, then when I felt comfortable I committed and rode off. I dont Hail Mary any tricks either, thats how the board gets caught under my feet in a position where I have no control over and I risk getting injured. I break down a trick into the smallest pieces and take it right to the end where the landing is the last little stage.
Sounds very similar, Just feels way safer doesn't it. Although My "20x" is more like 100x 😜
@@NeilHesterSkateboarding yes, lower the risk of injury, especially for older skateboarders, when i was a teen i didnt really plan or strategise or break tricks down i just used to try them, while theres many things i wont do now (like skating stairs) ive actually had more sucsess this time round as a 45 yr old skater and feel a better skater by being more calculated.
@ same here 👍🏻
As always Neil this is highly relatable, i feel like I'm on the same journey with my skating but just a step or two behind you. I also have the FOF. I often miss the coping when I'm doing frontside slashes, just bump the wheel... Takes me about 5 attempts to get a frontside grind. Used to have frontside axle stalls but took a heavy slam and haven't been able to work up the guts to get them back. Ive been doing the fakie smith stall lately same way you do it, but can't do it every time, gotta work up to it. We also ride a very similar setup, have the same amount of hair, and my middle name is Neil. 😅
@@mistersooty so I think we can blame the hair and the name 😂👊🏼 But yeah I think all we can do is repeat, repeat, repeat and try and get comfortable while attempting to make slight adjustments. Sooner or later things begin to stick 👍🏻 👊🏼
yep, im about 50 steps behind Neil, but i have a very similar lineal small step by step approach and im working my way up!
That was really interesting. And, more to the point, as an engineer, it all makes sense. Thank you very much.
@@daved3494 Thanks, I’m happy to hear you find it interesting. Lots of people seem to struggle with the idea but it makes sense to me too 👍🏻
Amazing video Neil, the progress you made over just these two sessions is awesome.
@@KieranClarkSkates Thanks Kieran 👍🏻
My 54mm wide cut X99s chipped on the third session, pretty disappointing, sticking with F4 from now on.
I’ve seen that happen with a lot of dual durometer style and softer wheels F4’s are pretty hard to beat 👍🏻
Is it true to size?
Yeah they feel like it to me.
the grinds in the deep end were gnarly, love the sound!
@@cameraop8210 thanks 👍🏻 that sound is hard to beat ☺️
G'day Neil, looking forward to seeing how you progress with this. I appreciate the methodical approach. I just started on the BS air journey following the Mitchie approach too. His tip to 'sit back' when landing has helped, but I've got a long way to go before I'm getting them anywhere near the coping! Funny story - as you say it's best to be alone initially so you can focus and get in some repetition. Therefore for my first session I chose the most out of the way vert ramp that - as far as I know - gets next to no use. Indeed I had the ramp to myself for an hour until a van drives down the bikepath and pulls up next to the ramp. Out get about 5 or 6 skaters including Tom Schaar and Kieran Wooley, and a few other Santa Cruz riders (and photographers) who started shredding every inch of the ramp. So yeah took that as a cue to end the session and enjoy the show.
Cool, thats something you’ll never forget !
You’ve got the lines, you’ve got the speed, you’ve got the skill. It’s all in your head. You should be doing 5050s every time. Forgot how nice CP is. Will have to come down soon. But I want to see a smith in that shallow end from you 👍🏻
@@seankelly6082 Thanks 😉 yeah as you know the mind often overrules our desires and you just have to chip away at it to get that moment which instills enough confidence to follow through. I have a lot of ups and down (I’m sure we all do) for no apparent some days things just don’t work out but too much away time definitely doesn’t help. Smiths will be a way off as I can’t even front 5050 it yet I’ve not got the trust to lean back enough as yet , more mind games 🤣 but yeah shout me if you’re up for a session anytime 👍🏻
Lovely camera Neil. Don’t bring it to the Old Guys Night. You’ll see every wrinkle of us old buggers😂.
🤣 that’s too funny 😜
How many Trucks you go through a year? (:
1 set every 2 or 3 years so far, I don’t like to change them and I like the grooves the wear in . Once you get down to the axle they don’t wear so fast because the axle is hard steel rather than the aluminium alloy of the hangers which is soft.
The soft shell helmets (non-certified) had caused a serious incident at Tony Hawk's indoor skate spot in the past.
Great to come up to date. Completely with you re the height thing Neil. Wow on the camera, shudder to think what you spent on that + lenses, certainly nice shots. You looked solid and took it to the coping, nice. Thanks.
Thanks 👍🏻 I’ve grown a fairly disturbing collection of cameras and lenses so didn’t need to spend more on lenses this time around but it think I’ll stop there for a while at least 🤣 I think it takes great images and I’ll try and use it more when I have the luxury of time to set it up and some skating worth showcasing 😉
