SELLING YACHT JOBS AS A GAP YEAR IS BAD FOR THE SUPER YACHT INDUSTRY
Crew turnover in junior positions is a real problem for the super yacht industry, but should we be surprised?
In this video, I'm taking a look at an article that has been written by a super yacht crew training provider, and demonstrating how (in my opinion) this is contributing to the problem.
The article focuses on how it's a good idea for people to become a yacht crew member during their gap year, but while there may be some benefit for the individual who chooses to do this, I don't think it's helping the superyacht industry in general.
Selling the idea of yacht jobs to people based on money, travel, and with reference to Below Deck just isn't the right way to go about building a professional industry.

WHY DO YACHT CREW LEAVE YACHTING TWICE ??? Don't make the same mistake with your superyacht career
มุมมอง 2.9K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
The decision to start a career working on yachts and superyachts is often very easy. More money, more travel, and a much more exciting lifestyle than your current one. What's not to like? But when a yacht crew member decides to finish their career at sea and move back ashore, they may find it a lot more difficult going in the opposite direction. Less money, less travel, and a much less exciting...
WHY SUPER YACHT DECK CREW NEED A MENTOR | And How Much It Could Cost Them Without One

I had to learn this lesson the hard way, and I don't want the...
HOW TO STEER A SUPERYACHT WITH NO POWER | A complete walkthrough of our emergency steering system
มุมมอง 2.8Kปีที่แล้ว
This week we're taking a look at the emergency steering system, and how to steer a superyacht if the steering pumps stop working or there's a power failure. Being able to steer the yacht without the steering pumps is of critical importance, so if you work on a super yacht (and particularly if you work out on deck), you'll take part in emergency steering drills at least once every 3 months. For ...
UNDOCKING AND DOCKING A SUPERYACHT STERN TO (Including all the radio calls)
มุมมอง 6Kปีที่แล้ว
Last week we went out on a sea trial, so I took the opportunity to give you a full walkthrough of the departure and arrival manoeuvres at our stern to berth. Docking a super yacht stern to is typical here in the Mediterranean, and it is sometimes called Mediterranean mooring. Radio calls in this scenario are really important because the captain can only see one side of the yacht, but there are ...

I love the attention to detail as it is important to get it right. Just a question as I have seen a 3 stage process where you apply oil at the end to maintain the clean teak. Why didn’t you use oil at the end? Or when would you use it?
im a deckhand on large cargo ship bulk container and car carrier im planning to switch to a yatch. what do you think?
The company he’s going on about is called flying fish which is worrying a bit for me
I’m going with this company in may to get my qualifications but I want a life time career not a crap one anyone got any ideas or should I get get my qualifications and do a load of my own research stuff
I’m going on a course in may with a company I’m not sure if it’s worth it I will get my stcw power boat level 1 and 2 and some other bits The company is called flying fish out of the Isle of Wight is it worth it
Can I climb the ranks to become a skipper even as a second or third engineer? Or do I need to start over as a deck hand?

Man My father, Hassan Lammouki, is a 56-year-old Moroccan who has devoted 34 years of his life to the sea as a ship captain and premier officier. He started his career at 22 and has worked across various types of ship technologies and operating systems, including dredging ships and fishing vessels for sardines, shrimp, and white meat fish. His expertise spans a wide range of vessel types and maritime systems, showcasing his adaptability and knowledge in this field. He has worked with two Spanish companies and eight Moroccan ones, including a notable shrimp fishing company owned by Aziz Akhannouch. My father has also worked in Spain on more than three occasions, spending 4-6 months there each time, gaining international experience and refining his skills. He holds a "Livret de Pilotage de Navire", a detailed record that includes all the companies he’s worked with and the duration of his contracts. It reflects his extensive career and professionalism. Now, he’s looking for new international opportunities in Europe, the USA, England, or Australia. Roles like yacht piloting, mini-boat driving, or other maritime positions would be ideal for him. I’m incredibly proud of his dedication, and I just want to help him continue doing what he loves on a global level. If anyone knows of opportunities or has advice, please reach out. Your help would mean so much to us and man a legend like him with all that experience and cruising in the Atlantic ocean and Mediterranean and he talk Spanish and french and also English

Heyy matthew I have been watching your videos from last one and half year I was wondering if an Indian work on Yacht or not??? I am looking forward to take basic stcw courses, so your answer would be very helpful to me.
I have to disagree. In the lower, like upto 200gt. The cost depend a lot were you do it, like a STCW basic cost 600€, you can even get it from the Spanish government for free. GOC Radio 1200€, not 1900€. What really bothers me is that you need to go through the same filter as everybody, so if you are naturally a seaman, it's a loos of time. You also have to mention, my opinion, after YM or Ocean you can get commercialy endorsed, so you can actually work, so investing again in yourself when you are off the boat is a bit less painfull. Back in time all those radar, sling course whatever you had to.learn them onboard, a captain sifned and you are good, while you eere earning days at sea, money plus the "free course", my opnion only, was better. ENG in Spain is free to obatin for actual "people of the sea" like they say here. You video is goodnto get a sneak preview, i think i can call it. I recomend UKSA for training. Have a nice day Capt Mike, Master 3000.
Good day, thank you very much for your training videos! I would like to ask, were I can buy the “sheep” the lamb wool pad you put on the extension pole. Best regards
Thank you so much for this excellent video. The information is incredibly helpful. I am a US citizen, i am in my 20's and i speak 3 languges. I am based in Fort Lauderdale and i am looking to start a career in the yachting industry. I will stay tuned to your channel and i will even recommend it to others as they start their yachting journey.

Hi send me if you any link can I apply I have worked experience 8years on yatch
Nice video. Matthew what do you think if I am a carpenter on a cruise ship. I am working for 3 years. Can i hope to get a job as a carpenter on yacths? Also, what is the year limit for entering to yacht industry as carpenter? Thanks man u do a nice job.
What do you think about going to a maritime college? 4 years and you will be out with a 3rd mate USCG license of unlimited tonnage? If get my license in that I know I can work in cargo ships but my question is am I eligible to work in supper yachts?
Curious to know why you chose a banana for a snack while looking for a job on a boat.
Thank you for the video! If it is possible, can you prepare a video about gelcoat repair, painting and fairing?
awesome video. really insightful.
Thank you!
Alot cheaper than a university degree, and you'll definitely get a much higher starting salary (doing something you presumably like)
Thank you
I don’t know anything about yachts or foreign ships and licenses, but I find 60 months to be truly unbelievable. I’m the US we have to have sea time and even working 180 days a year on a commercial ship that almost never stops it takes many many years to get the 1080 days underway to upgrade from an AB to a 3rd mates license. Judging by the fact that at least the yachts I see are moored considerably more then they are underway, it seem like it would basically be impossible to accumulate the sea time working on one?
There are a couple of reasons why it takes less time to get yacht CoCs. The first is that the majority of positions aren't rotational, especially in the junior ranks. This means that a crew member working towards a yacht OOW CoC will be on board for about 300 days per year. In addition, you only need 3 years of on board service and 250 days of sea service (plus 115 days of sea service, yard service, or stand by service) to be eligible for a yacht OOW CoC. As you say, this is significantly less than the 1080 days of sea service that is required for an unlimited (commercial) OOW CoC. Moving forward from yacht OOW to yacht Master, the service requirements are again less than in the commercial sector.
@@WorkonaSuperyacht Thanks that’s very interesting. It’s a lot worse then 1080 days to go from an OS to master unlimited here in the US. More like 5,000 days. A day here is a minimum of 8 hours underway! That is unless you went to a merchant marine academy and came out in 4 years with a 3rd mate or engineers unlimited tonnage/horsepower license. With weather delays, delays in port for unloading/loading, maintenance/repairs, and inspections your lucky to actually get 120 days a year of actual sea time working full time on a ship. I’ve been working most of my life at sea and I’m not even halfway to a masters license (other then my 100 ton chicken shit masters) as I figure it’s a minimum of a 30 year process. I’ve come to the conclusion that I won’t live long enough to get mine.
Great video! I wonder why did u wrap 2 rounds before figure 8 at 8:40?
Nice content! Is it possible to request more videos about topics which I'd like to learn?
@workonaSuperyacht I have one question am 23 years old and I finish the college of merchant ship more than 500 tons and I have already the 3 officer degree from the cyprus flag ,and am thinking to continue in yachts , if I will go I will be as OOW ?
I came across your channel a couple of years ago, having landed myself a season of work on a yacht, both as crew and as the on-board wildlife guide (I have a background in zoology and ecology, specialising in marine mammals). I was feeling like I needed a change, as I had just completed my undergraduate study. Your videos gave me so much insight into what was going to be required of me onboard, and I carried that knowledge forward. I completed the season, and loved it, but I chose to go back to university rather than continue immediately in the industry, to complete a masters degree, as I thought I could always go back to yachting, but I might not always feel like I could go and study more, and I knew that working at sea was going to be a part of me now moving forward. Since, I have taken ad-hoc opportunities to crew on yachts for short periods as and when they come up, and have taken opportunities to work onboard research vessels also, in line with my studies, and have completed yacht-work related qualifications in my spare time, and I am now doing a PhD. My end goal, and I can say that if it weren't for these videos I might have never ended up in this position, is to complete my PhD programme and then transition to setting up my own cruise company, based where I have experience of sailing, and sharing the natural world with guests. Thanks Matthew, your videos have been excellent for me 👍 To clarify, I can attest that it was a very different yacht to the one pictured that I worked on, and it was a seasonal position that was advertised - had it not been, there was very little chance that I would have been taken on. Both I and the employer were aware of the situation and the terms of me taking the position though!😅
I'll send this to my officer friends who want to become yachtie. Love the contents!
Thank you! I really appreciate you sharing it with others.
A good video to raise awareness. I want to add something: like you said it’s a well know fact, none of HOD wants to go to the circle process hiring-training-losing. What about the others people involved in the « well running yacht » management company/brokers/owners ? Everybody should be focus on the same line from each part of yachting industry. Most of a lot of yacht need a permanent crew onboard, a full time position, rotational position, sometimes some additional crew.
What a bore
Hello @Fumbuzi. Thanks for your feedback.
why is crew turnover in yachting industry among junior crew a problem?
In my opinion, there are two main reasons: New crew are coming into the industry with the wrong expectations; Even for those who are well prepared and know what to expect, the lifestyle just isn't a good fit for them.
Well seems like i am screwed. No hospitality background, and no experience on the sea. I would have been down to do all the courses, even planning to go to Antibes. I dont know if its possible to enter the industry with those credentials Rip i guess Thanks for the video matthew
No, you're not screwed. If you don't have any transferrable skills right now, go and get some. I made a whole video about that here: th-cam.com/video/CTFYzlqaNZk/w-d-xo.html I'm encouraging new crew to take a long term view rather than treating yachting as something to hop into for a year or less. If you look at yachting as a career, it's not unreasonable to suggest that you spend time gaining relevant experience and skills in preparation for joining the industry. After all, you might spend many years at university in preparation for some careers. I hope this clears up any confusion about what I'm saying in the video. My whole channel is dedicated to helping yacht crew build successful careers in this industry. If you're serious about a career in yachting then I encourage you to go for it.
Probably one of the best videos you’ve done. Excellent presentation and content.
Thank you!
You are so right Matthew, the Industry needs to be 'professional' and rid itself of the 'Below Deck' image, yacht crew are there to work and not on a paid holiday. Long term articles such as that are destructive, what Captain, Chief Officer, Chief Stew is going to employ anyone that has been on that training after a negative experience with 'gap year' paid tourist, who thinks they are on a summer long party rather than being a professional mariner.
