    Hello, I was actually really lucky transferring to the yacht industry.. I had experience as an officer on merchant navy and I got a cousin who knew a captain of my current yacht. He was looking for a deckhand so after an interview I got the job... One month before the season my captain contacted the chief officer that he expected to come for sure, for my luck he wasn't able to join the yacht so I got that position instead... That was pure luck...as many say expect the unexpected..

    Anyone with an unlimited CoC would also have to be mindful of revalidation requirements if they opted to "start at the bottom" on super yachts. Nothing against this in principle as its a good idea to have a sound knowledge of the extra duties involved. I can say from personal experience that e.g. cleaning teak decks is not a job I have ever had or heard of friends having on cargo ships :). Thanks for the previous video on that subject, very helpful.

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht
      @WorkonaSuperyacht  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for pointing this out, woolyimage. I've just double-checked the revalidation requirements for COCs issued by the MCA, which requires 12 months' seagoing service in the last 5 years OR 3 months' seagoing service in the last 6 months. This shouldn't present any issues, but crew must certainly be mindful of getting the timing right.

    So, moving from a cruise ship with 3-4 years background as junior officer on to a yacht, could someone become directly an officer?

      Hello Navigator. I once worked on a yacht that was nearly 4000GT in volume. The second officer had done his cadetship on cruise ships, spent a further 2 years with the company as a junior officer, and then moved straight into the role. That was 7 years ago. There are no guarantees, but it could still happen today.

      @WorkonaSuperyacht Hi! Thank you for taking the time. During my current leave period, I have completed PB2, Tender and deckhand courses. I have applied to probably more than 50 jobs online. I am not sure how commercial seafarers are seen by yacht recruiters. I tried a very professional looking photo for my CV, to show that we can also clean up a bit, and was told that I come across standoffish. I have since changed to a more friendly looking photo haha. In my cover letters I have started mentioning that I will pay for my flight to join. Maybe I should do more to explain my job description and responsibilities as a 2nd officer on commercial ships? I also don't want recruiters and crew to think I will not take direction from someone who does not have OOW. I guess I am finding it difficult to walk that line of showing my experience off, and proving I will absolutely be happy to take direction and want to learn. I am joining the commercial ship again soon, and I am planning to do some Padi courses when I am on leave next time. I also uploaded some drone footage on my instagram page, to show that skill aswell. instagram.com/troopercooper3?igsh=MXE4b2l2NW9wYWFoZg== Thank you for your reply. Hope things are well.

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht
      @WorkonaSuperyacht  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your detailed reply. As a newcomer to the industry, the chances of getting a job on a yacht by applying online through agencies is very small. Gone are the days when your unlimited licence would put you at the front of the queue for a 3rd or 2nd officer job on a large superyacht over 3000GT. There are enough yacht crew with unlimited licences to fill those positions now, which is why you must start as a deckhand. And like any deckhand who is just starting out, this means going to a yachting hub such as Antibes, Palma, or Fort Lauderdale, walking the docks, doing day work, expanding your network, and slowly building your yachting experience so that in time, a yacht might consider you for a permanent deckhand position.
      Regarding PADI courses, diving certification isn't going to improve your chances. Most yachts don't want the liability of taking guests diving, so they normally just contract a local dive centre to take their guests diving if it's requested. For the small minority of yachts that do take their guests diving and need divemasters or dive instructors, they are more likely to want people who have experience working at a dive centre, not people who have just done the courses and got the qualifications. If you want to make yourself more employable through watersports experience then kitesurfing, wakeboarding, and water-skiing would be better.
      I hope this helps, and that it gives you a better understanding of what you need to do in order to get started.

    • @georgecooper5977
      @georgecooper5977 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @WorkonaSuperyacht Thank you very much for your response. I have been applying mostly for Deckhand and Junior Deckhand positions. I understand completely regarding dockwalking and getting to the hubs. I am married, and don't get much time at home as it is, so taking my leave to dock walk is something I was trying to avoid, but you got to do what you got to do right. Considering day workers and deckhands earn more than I do as 2nd Officer I will do whatever I have to. They have no idea how hard I am willing to work haha. Thank you for taking the time. Love your content btw. All the best.

I have little knowledge of the industry but I think it was hinted at in the video that knowing people was important as it is in many walks of life. If you don’t try you’ll never know. I'm tired of all those documents that you've to fullfill on board of big ships, and that sector, in the past years became very stressfull. I'm worried about the requirements imposed by the recruitment agencies regarding ''yacht experience''. Do you really think that the best way to start is to have a step back and start from a deckhand position? Thank you for all your advices and have a good day!

      Hello Alfonso. Your experience on passenger ships may mean that it's possible to move straight into a deck officer role on board a superyacht; however, you should prepare for the fact that you might need to spend a year or two as a deckhand before getting the chance to step up. I'd recommend that you start by contacting a few crew agencies to see what they have available for someone with your level of experience.

    since a certain time that I watch these videos, I remark several things, the motivation that surrounds many things (administrative, study, knowledge of the industry) is very important, unfortunately, one thing is without doubt painful, the physique ( health), which is not something controllable. What do these yachting men become when they are affected by the disease. As usual :) thanks for this great video. i like learn 👍👍👍

    • @WorkonaSuperyacht
      @WorkonaSuperyacht  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Rudi. It's true that working on a superyacht requires you to be fit and healthy. Accordingly, crew members must pass a seafarer's medical every two years. Unfortunately, if you lose your health this career may no longer be an option, which is why it's important to make the most of the opportunity while you can. If you gain qualifications and work your way up the ranks, you may at least have opportunities ashore within the maritime industry, even if you aren't able to work on board a ship.

      That's correct. This is why I suggest looking at vessels over 3000GT when trying to move straight into an officer position on board a yacht. Your Unlimited qualification will be of most value here, and there is a large enough deck team that you won't really need to be driving tenders or helping out with maintenance on deck.
