  • The Pink Triangle & Gay Identity in the Shadow of the Holocaust, a thought-provoking event in honor of Pride Month, is led by Professor Jake Newsome, PhD.
Dr. Newsome explores how generations of LGBTQ+ activists and grassroots scholars fought against attempts to purposefully silence the stories of the Nazis’ LGBTQ+ victims. In doing so, they reclaimed the pink triangle, transforming it from a concentration camp badge into a marker of resistance, pride, and community, and redefining what it meant to be gay in a post-Holocaust world.
Jake Newsome is an award-winning scholar of German and American LGBTQ+ history whose research and resources educate global audiences. His forthcoming book Pink Triangle Legacies: Coming Out in the Shadow of the Holocaust (Cornell University Press, Sept. 2022) traces the transformation of the pink triangle from a concentration camp badge in Nazi Germany into a symbol of queer activism, pride, and community beginning in the 1970s. You can find him online at wjakenewsome.com and on social media at @wjnewsome.
This event is part of 3GNY's Event Series - Jewishness, Activism & Belonging: The goal of this 2022-2023 event series is to highlight the diverse intersections of being Jewish and descendants of Holocaust Survivors in the modern post-WW2 era. We will amplify diverse stories - of communities of color, of the queer community, and more - using our platform for progress, conversation and inclusion.
This event is hosted by 3GNY, 3GNJ, & 3G Philly, and is co-sponsored by the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage.
The views and opinions shared by our guest speakers are theirs alone, and do not represent the views of 3GNY or our partner organizations. As an educational organization dedicated to preserving the lessons and legacies of the Holocaust, we strive to engage a diversity of viewpoints and perspectives on how to carry on that legacy.
