Did you entertain the thought of Kale Brocks mid length as a performance middy?
It wasn't released I believe when I looked at the ones I was considering, and I doubt it's available here anyway. And as far as I know, Kale Brock's the only one who's reviewed it. Bit like asking Britt Merrick, Jason Stevenson, Matt Biolos or Dann Mann which mid length is best. And they are shapers.
I agree. Most reviews are pros, sponsored riders or the shaper talking about how good it is. Hard to find honest reviews out there!
I have a 7.2 pintail single fin. Works as good as any tri fin.that hybrid looks fun
I did a hard bottom turn and reentry with the M23 twin setup the other day. Reminded me of the way I used to surf when we were all riding 6'10 - 7'00 single fins before twin fins and thrusters turned up.
Mate dont say you bought a mid length when you didnt. A 6 8 m23 is a hybrid. You are like so many other short boarders who pretend to want a mid but are too scared to go there. A mid is over 7 2 if you ask me anything less is a long shortboard.
As you've just pointed out, there are many different opinions as to what a mid length actually is.
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms its really not complicated man. A legit mid has the glide of a longboard. You simply arent getting that feeling on a 6 8. And lets talk about your fin set up mate. How many mid lengths have you seen that are thrusters? Any legit shaper worth their salt would use a box with side plugs for a 2 +1 set up for a real mid length.
@@newoization Isn't that a Mini Mal?
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms yeh man it kind of is yes. Although of course its not the same shape is it? Its definitely closer to a mini mal than a short board. Id say its a cross between a mini mal and a hybrid. Whereas what youre trying to pass off there as a mid length is a hybrid. Thats a cross between a mid length and a short board.
@@newoization You're definitely right. The M23 is a hybrid, which I do point out in the video. But it does get lumped along with a lot of other hybrids in the mid length category. It's definitely become a lot more confusing.
Good choice. Ive had several channel islands and they all surfed well. Id love to try the m23.
I'm happy with the choice so far.
I like my m23 for shoulder high plus. Ci tph is the one for under head high. My mid quiver is album moonstone, js big baron, lost c.k., album vesper, pyzel MLC. Tph is all time for small waves
Wow! That's a quiver of mids. Interesting that CI on its website positions the M23 as more suited to small waves than either the CI Mid or the Mid Twin Pin, having the same wave size recommendations as the TPH. Getting anecdotal feedback that surfers are riding the M23 more in the range of waist to double overhead. Looking forward to trying out M23 in bigger surf.
Ya devon has some awesome reviews with real watersports explaining them all in detail. The tph is very fun in small, weak waves. Super fast floaty feeling and turns quick. I use my m23 for better, bigger waves that are hollow or smaller fast hollow beachbreak waves. Mids dont work well in small waves imo unless they are long board inspired like the tph
@@genomcnerney9673 Yea, watched that for M23. It was good. I tried 2 + 1 recently but not a lot of difference to thruster for me in 1.5ft weak waves. Today put the AMK Keels in for same kinda waves. Worked a treat. Can't see myself owning more than one mid length at this point though, as I'm still keen on short boards even in small waves. Took the Happy Every Day out yesterday in same kinda waves and was happy.
If you want that shortboard feel in a easy package for average surf the album vesper is the funnest easiest shortboard ive ever had. Feels like a mid but rips like a hps Mine is 6'4 im 6'2 200lb
@@genomcnerney9673 Good heads up.

Glad you liked it. Time, effort and surf needed. Will do my best. 😊
Currently visiting my parents in the Far North...this reminds me why I moved to French Polynesia 15 years ago
I do enjoy your content though....Should try more local boards suited to the conditions ?
Love my Ghost and it was the right board for the first surf but had the wrong fins. Could have ridden my Shadow though, which I love in most NZ waves over 4ft. It was the first surf on my Red Tiger. Both weren't helped by recovering from heavy flu and having a badly injured big toe, but still had fun. French Polynesia... ahhh.
This is great news! Ive been considering that exact model the m23 so Im glad to see your perspective. Thanks!
The bot account name makes me suspicious, but if you are human, glad to hear it.
@ haha beep boop. Bwap. Berrrt. (Fax machine noises). Thanks for the vid again, m23 is on my radar.
Epic footage
One of the best days I've had there.
A shape like that at that length, I’d prefer it in a swallow tail for smaller waves under head high. Maybe also try it as a twin + trailer in grovel waves
Had another 1ft slop surf this AM om M23 with 2+1s. Didn't seem to make a discernible difference from the AM2s.
@ hm interesting. I have a 6ft round tail that loosens up on 2+1 vs AM thruster
@@FluffyAlpaca81 Same with my 6ft RNF96. Definitely looser with 2 + 1 over thruster setup. I'll have another go at it with the M23.
Just went from 5"10 rocket fish to a 6"6 twinzers, i ride Akila Aipa Twins and got the canards from Ames fins.
Hope it goes well for you.
JS El Baron looks awesome. My friend owns one, such a well balanced board.
Yes, another good looking high performance mid.
I recently bought this and have ridden it in different conditions down in Dunedin. It went great on a small point break with pivot fins which made it loose and playful. It goes really well in big fat or steep waves with the AM2's that are recommended by CI, gets you in early. I love it. Can't wait to hear how you find it in bigger waves.
Cheers for the info. I've got a set of pivots, the AM2's and a set of 2+1's. Will experiment from here on in with fins and update after I've had a range of surfs. I jumped back on my Happy Every Day yesterday in 3ft surf. It was a bit of a shock dropping down the seven liters and I've only had three surfs on the M23--the danger of mid lengths right there. 😃
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms very dangerous, particularly the performance middies ;)
Ive looked at the M23, but Since i got my 7'6" Lost Crowd Killer ive never looked back.
So many good boards out there.
kool man..all you young uns are surfing Mid lengths nowadays
Oh to be young... 😆
Great board and a good choice for you. At 6'8 they are the most versatile shape out there. You can ride it as a twin plus trailer in tiny mush then as the waves get progressively bigger go with progressively smaller thruster fins and it keeps performing. In waist to chest high I use large thruster fins then above that mediums.
Only had it in mush so far. AM2's only so far but will play with fins from here on in.
I just turned 44 and purchased a 6'2. I'm on my way!
I still ride a 6'2" HPSB for 4 - 6+. Love that board.
I made myself a mid length in PU glassed with epoxy and basalt. 6'8" x 20 1/2". Low entry flat middle medium exit rocker. Outline is narrower in nose and tail than say the CI mid. Slight concave to pronounced double through the fins. It has a single fin box and futures boxes at 12". I ride it as a twin with a small trailer with positioning I dailed in with the adjustable box. Pros Heavy - mows through chop, soaks up the bumps. Has momentum and glide and is easy to catch waves Very easy to paddle - can scoot around the line up and out-paddle groms on short boards Handles big stuff - windy take offs Feels awesome on rail Is duck divable Cons Duck diving a 6 wave set gets pretty tiring compared to a short board. Can't whip it around and take off late Not as many turn options as a shortboard in small stuff - I prefer my small wave twin+trailer short board. A bit sketchy in bigger hollow waves.
All the pros and cons there. I ride my RNF96 as a twin + 1 in small stuff. Goes great.
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms Yes. When my current small wave 2+1 dies I'm going to get a Lost Pisces - (next step evolution from the RNF96)
I have had quite a few "mid lengths'...and they can cater to all sorts and conditions. the M23 looks a great board. My go-to good wave mid length (also a "hybrid") is a 6'9 Christenson Osprey. an absolute weapon. can be pushed into as big and heavy conditions as I can handle, but also has a bit of glide and trim for down to small and clean. Check it out. Might suit your style, too
There are so many now. Christenson certainly has his fans.
6'8" a midlength , in 20 years definitions sure have changed.
I know. Who' have thought there'd be mini mid lengths. 🙂
7 0 and up ?
There's a definition that 6'8" to 7'6" is a mid length to a number of people around the place, with over 7'6" being classed as a long board if it's not a gun.
P.s I could see this being a good step up in pumping south piha sessions like 4-6foot / overhead when there is a lot of water moving?
Yea, I want to give it a shot in some bigger surf to see how it goes.
@ I’d say it will go epic - easier to get into the throaty stuff plus a nice long rail to work with. But let us know!
@@edawg654 Will do.
Purchasing an Album Vesper as a bit of a treat. Where did you source the PU M23? I can only see the Torqs available online? Cheers!
Interested in your take on the Album. I custom ordered the PU M23 because only Torqs available everywhere.
@ which shop does custom CI?
@@edawg654 Order it from whoever sells CI. I did it through Backdoor. They may even have PU at the mo.
Congratulations on the M23, I'm curious about your next reviews. It's a board that I've had my eye on for many years. After our conversation about mid length I was saying bad things about epoxy but I ended up buying the Mid 6 7.0 :) second hand and I love it, i feel the thunderbolt diferent than firewire epoxy. The problem is that I no longer use my short boards. I catch a lot of waves and surf like I've never surfed before. Now I am looking to mini Moe, Album Vesper and Pyzel Mid Lenght Crises.
Sounds like you have made a successful transition from short boards to mid length, and you are getting the best out of it. I think the key thing with mid lengths is whether or not you want the traditional egg type, or you want a performance type. It seems to me if you get that sorted, then it's hard to go wrong with any choice. Someone I know recently went with the Boss Up and loves it.
Love your videos and really inspiring. Hope you don’t mind me asking, what is your age please?
Glad you like the videos. I'm 66.
Inspiring
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms epic. so inspiring. love your vibe
Try a 2+1 fin setup to loosen the board up a bit for those small days ...
Good thought. I bought the AM2's for the M23 (and my Happy Every Day) and have been trying them out, but have a set of 2+1's and will give them a shot at some point.
Great Interview. Really appreciated the discussion of how to keep surfing into ones 60, 70s (and beyond).
Thanks for the feedback. Surfing into old age is a focus of mine.
Hi Tui, I was surprised to see you do these videos! We chatted out at South Piha about my baby blue mid 6 - 7ft in the car park. Its been a good all round board. I'm now looking at the 6'4 in thunderbolt black now that my fitness is better. I had a great session at Te Arai last week where it was pumping and caught lodes of waves. I like the mid 6 - very driveable board and the thin rails allow it to cut into the face. One thing about thunderbolt is that the boards are tough and mine has only small compressions. That can't underestimated. I'll see you out there in your 6'8 and really nice professional video. All the best Ken
Hey, Ken. Good to hear you are liking your Mid 6. I got a 6'8" and have had three surfs on it in very small waves. Will do a video on it in the not too distant future. See you in the surf!
Awesome video as always 😁 from your list I’d probably would go for the HI mid 6 or the m23. I also heard a lot of good stuff about the dhd interceptor.
Cherers. I'm waiting for my mid-length to turn up right now. I'll do a video when it does on which I chose and why.
Beautiful place !
Awesome reviews bro, relevant n knowledgeable appreciate your mahi

Beautiful. Cheers from the other side of the world in Lisboa.
Thanks. Enjoyed your city, too. Didn't get any good surf while I was there, though.
Nice concise explanation
Hope you found it useful.
Loved the discussion Imo I tend to ride the following based on conditions: Mushy Waves (small/med/big) - Fishes (I like quads)/Eggs/Everyday mids/Twin mids Punchy/Hollow waves (small) - Grovelers, Fishes Punchy/Hollow waves (medium/big) - Thruster shortboards I always struggled with "higher performance" mids with more rocker and more pulled in outlines. For small or mushy waves they weren't as maneuverable, harder to duck dive, and didn't paddle as good as fishes. They didn't have as good glide for small waves as everyday or twin mids. For larger waves, I could see more of a use case for them but then again if the waves are good I'd rather just be on a shortboard or a step up if its actually huge. The one place I could seem them being extremely fun is a clean lined up point break, but I feel like any board would go well in those conditions
I have a range of boards for different conditions like you, but different boards and types, obviously. I've just bought a higher performance mid. Still waiting for it to come. It's meant to work better in small waves rather than bigger surf--I'd ride one of my high performance shortboard thrusters anyway when the waves are over 4ft.
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms right on, looking forward to a future video on your thoughts on it! I always had a challenge with those boards in small waves
#rideverything ! Great video! As for categorizing depends on one's height and the length of their smaller and bigger boards...if it falls in the middle and has a rounded nose it's a mid-length (or fun board).
Cheers. Love the concept, but what if you have only one or two boards?
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms Unimaginable. 😂
😭
For me coming from shortboard land, I tend to prefer "performance mid's" or whatever that means. Currently been riding: 6'8 Chilli Mid Strength as a quad - honestly an amazing board goes in anything just about from shin gutless to double overhead. For one year I kept coming back to it calling it the "Secret Sauce". I then got the 6'4 Chilli Middy as a quad - the small brother of the Mid Strength, love this board and ended up being on it more instead .... During this time I got a 6'9 Stacey Ohlson Twin - this is a performance mid length and it literally goes from the smallest waves to as big as I am prepared to ride .... I like this even better than the Chilli boards. I got addicted to it and rode it everywhere. I liked coming to the beach with two boards. Rode the shorter board for an hour or so and when feeling tired I swapped it for this board to extend the surf. I liked it so much I got myself a 6'5 Stacey Ohlson Twin recently. This feels like an everything board. I might eye out some bigger boards now above 7 foot to add something to the quiver to teeny tiny days ... A key thing for me is the width, too wide and I was struggling to handle / duck dive the board in bigger or rather wilder surf with lots of water moving around .... That's why I keep coming back to the Stacey Ohlson twin ....
Lots of great info there. Thanks.
Really liking my Cape Collective 7'0.... Made in Byron...not sure if available in NZ or around other places. Great board. Also got a CI Mid that I never use. My first mid was a McTavish Carver years ago...fun board
Thanks for the info. Don't believe we have Cape Collective here. Seems like that's the board for you.

That guy who blatantly dropped in on you what an absolute clown even better we all got to see his face while doing it . Awesome video by the way ripping uncle 🤙🤙

My experience with Channel Islands shortboards is that they’re typically pretty high performance and sensitive/reactive boards. Not the easiest to surf.
The CI happy Every Day is certainly performance oriented with its attributes, but I personally didn't find it hard to surf. I've yet to try it in a range of wave sizes and conditions, but it does seems to ft into that slot of the daily driver. I'll know more a couple of months from now.
Pops is ripping. Those conditions at my end would be a great day.🤙
:-) Conditions were lovely - offshore, with peaks up and down the beach. Waves were small and gutless, unfortunately.
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms but for us beautiful you guys are blessed 🙌
what is it a 6'1 ? ...I got the 6'2 version..its pretty versatile, im closer to 85 kgs and my 6'2 Happy Everyday is 37 litres ,,,I can surf it in small or big and it has the volume to still catch all wave sizes even when in a 4'3 steamer. Even though looks like a meat axe it still moves around like a performance shortboard......Id love to try a JS daily driver and move down one or two litres into an easy rider Monsta 10 or Xero gravity but not in a rush as dont expect life changing difference. I can surf the Happy everyday from 0.5 feet to overhead and a bit,,,,,,,,if gets bigger I got an old sweetspot 2.0 6'8 to use as a step up. Actually what were your 4 other daily driver options ?
Stock 6'1" x 2 5/8 x 20.5 at 35.1l. The other options were the Pyzel Mini Ghost, Lost Uber Driver XL, JS Xero Gravity and the Sharpeye Inferno 72. I also liked the look of the Xero Gravity, but it seems a touch more high performance and I was after a standard daily driver.
2:10 what a jerk…annoys the shit out of me why ppl cant just follow the frikin rules
🎉🎉 happy every day compet the shadow xl? the happy every day need good amount of wave friends tells me
My Shadow XL is really for 4 - 8ft. The CI Happy Every Day is meant to be for 2 - 6ft. A bit of a cross over, but really different boards for different conditions. More likely to ride my Shadow in 6ft, but won't really know until I try the CI HED in surf that size.
I hope I still surf like you when I'm 60!!! I watched your twinnie vid, What has been your favorite twin+trailer board? I've hated twin fins every time I've tried them but I have been considering giving them another go on a 2+1 setup
I only have one set: Futures Fins T1 Honeycomb Twin Fin 2 + 1. Neutral template, Medium, Fiberglass/Honeycomb. Very happy with them. Always use with the trailer for stability.
