I recently bought this and have ridden it in different conditions down in Dunedin. It went great on a small point break with pivot fins which made it loose and playful. It goes really well in big fat or steep waves with the AM2's that are recommended by CI, gets you in early. I love it. Can't wait to hear how you find it in bigger waves.
Cheers for the info. I've got a set of pivots, the AM2's and a set of 2+1's. Will experiment from here on in with fins and update after I've had a range of surfs. I jumped back on my Happy Every Day yesterday in 3ft surf. It was a bit of a shock dropping down the seven liters and I've only had three surfs on the M23--the danger of mid lengths right there. 😃
I like my m23 for shoulder high plus. Ci tph is the one for under head high. My mid quiver is album moonstone, js big baron, lost c.k., album vesper, pyzel MLC. Tph is all time for small waves
Wow! That's a quiver of mids. Interesting that CI on its website positions the M23 as more suited to small waves than either the CI Mid or the Mid Twin Pin, having the same wave size recommendations as the TPH. Getting anecdotal feedback that surfers are riding the M23 more in the range of waist to double overhead. Looking forward to trying out M23 in bigger surf.
Ya devon has some awesome reviews with real watersports explaining them all in detail. The tph is very fun in small, weak waves. Super fast floaty feeling and turns quick. I use my m23 for better, bigger waves that are hollow or smaller fast hollow beachbreak waves. Mids dont work well in small waves imo unless they are long board inspired like the tph
@@genomcnerney9673 Yea, watched that for M23. It was good. I tried 2 + 1 recently but not a lot of difference to thruster for me in 1.5ft weak waves. Today put the AMK Keels in for same kinda waves. Worked a treat. Can't see myself owning more than one mid length at this point though, as I'm still keen on short boards even in small waves. Took the Happy Every Day out yesterday in same kinda waves and was happy.
If you want that shortboard feel in a easy package for average surf the album vesper is the funnest easiest shortboard ive ever had. Feels like a mid but rips like a hps Mine is 6'4 im 6'2 200lb
Great board and a good choice for you. At 6'8 they are the most versatile shape out there. You can ride it as a twin plus trailer in tiny mush then as the waves get progressively bigger go with progressively smaller thruster fins and it keeps performing. In waist to chest high I use large thruster fins then above that mediums.
Congratulations on the M23, I'm curious about your next reviews. It's a board that I've had my eye on for many years. After our conversation about mid length I was saying bad things about epoxy but I ended up buying the Mid 6 7.0 :) second hand and I love it, i feel the thunderbolt diferent than firewire epoxy. The problem is that I no longer use my short boards. I catch a lot of waves and surf like I've never surfed before. Now I am looking to mini Moe, Album Vesper and Pyzel Mid Lenght Crises.
Sounds like you have made a successful transition from short boards to mid length, and you are getting the best out of it. I think the key thing with mid lengths is whether or not you want the traditional egg type, or you want a performance type. It seems to me if you get that sorted, then it's hard to go wrong with any choice. Someone I know recently went with the Boss Up and loves it.
I have had quite a few "mid lengths'...and they can cater to all sorts and conditions. the M23 looks a great board. My go-to good wave mid length (also a "hybrid") is a 6'9 Christenson Osprey. an absolute weapon. can be pushed into as big and heavy conditions as I can handle, but also has a bit of glide and trim for down to small and clean. Check it out. Might suit your style, too
A shape like that at that length, I’d prefer it in a swallow tail for smaller waves under head high. Maybe also try it as a twin + trailer in grovel waves
I made myself a mid length in PU glassed with epoxy and basalt. 6'8" x 20 1/2". Low entry flat middle medium exit rocker. Outline is narrower in nose and tail than say the CI mid. Slight concave to pronounced double through the fins. It has a single fin box and futures boxes at 12". I ride it as a twin with a small trailer with positioning I dailed in with the adjustable box. Pros Heavy - mows through chop, soaks up the bumps. Has momentum and glide and is easy to catch waves Very easy to paddle - can scoot around the line up and out-paddle groms on short boards Handles big stuff - windy take offs Feels awesome on rail Is duck divable Cons Duck diving a 6 wave set gets pretty tiring compared to a short board. Can't whip it around and take off late Not as many turn options as a shortboard in small stuff - I prefer my small wave twin+trailer short board. A bit sketchy in bigger hollow waves.
There's a definition that 6'8" to 7'6" is a mid length to a number of people around the place, with over 7'6" being classed as a long board if it's not a gun.
Good thought. I bought the AM2's for the M23 (and my Happy Every Day) and have been trying them out, but have a set of 2+1's and will give them a shot at some point.
Mate dont say you bought a mid length when you didnt. A 6 8 m23 is a hybrid. You are like so many other short boarders who pretend to want a mid but are too scared to go there. A mid is over 7 2 if you ask me anything less is a long shortboard.
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms its really not complicated man. A legit mid has the glide of a longboard. You simply arent getting that feeling on a 6 8. And lets talk about your fin set up mate. How many mid lengths have you seen that are thrusters? Any legit shaper worth their salt would use a box with side plugs for a 2 +1 set up for a real mid length.
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms yeh man it kind of is yes. Although of course its not the same shape is it? Its definitely closer to a mini mal than a short board. Id say its a cross between a mini mal and a hybrid. Whereas what youre trying to pass off there as a mid length is a hybrid. Thats a cross between a mid length and a short board.
@@newoization You're definitely right. The M23 is a hybrid, which I do point out in the video. But it does get lumped along with a lot of other hybrids in the mid length category. It's definitely become a lot more confusing.
This is great news! Ive been considering that exact model the m23 so Im glad to see your perspective. Thanks!
The bot account name makes me suspicious, but if you are human, glad to hear it.
@ haha beep boop. Bwap. Berrrt. (Fax machine noises). Thanks for the vid again, m23 is on my radar.
Good choice. Ive had several channel islands and they all surfed well. Id love to try the m23.
I'm happy with the choice so far.

Had another 1ft slop surf this AM om M23 with 2+1s. Didn't seem to make a discernible difference from the AM2s.
@ hm interesting. I have a 6ft round tail that loosens up on 2+1 vs AM thruster
@@FluffyAlpaca81 Same with my 6ft RNF96. Definitely looser with 2 + 1 over thruster setup. I'll have another go at it with the M23.

Hope it goes well for you.
