So many mid lengths. Which one to choose?

- Why would you ride a mid length surfboard? And if you had to choose, which one would you get? I explore the reasons for getting a mid length surfboard and look at the attributes of six high-performance mid lengths/hybrids.
I grabbed myself a 7' Seaside and Beyond in Thunderbolt Red. Great board. I am surfing it as a twin fin using Rob Machaddo Keels. Next level fun :)
That's what it's all about. Finding the board you love.
A good friend of a friend loves his Seaside and Beyond. Not for me, though, but intersting you've gone the Thunderbolt Red route.
Take a look at the Boss Up from Slater Design. It is a stretched out shortboard and rides really well. I demoed one and now saving my pennies also. It’s really fast and maneuverable for a mid length. So much fun to ride.
I have now. Looks good.
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms I've got a 6'10" boss up - goes fantastic - so much glide and turns great off the tail - my normal vol is 30litres short board - 61year old
Hi, love the video !!!!! Appart from my shorties, I ride a Lost Smooth Operator 6´10 about 43L, and its a dely! I found important the fin configuration depending on the waves. When its slopy up to head high, I use the FCS Machado Keel, they hold and project with speed allowing for good turns and cut backs. When its solid, up to double over head, I use a quad set up with FCS accelerator at the front and performance back fins. You have to consider this type of boards for long runners to experience the joy the board offers.
Was conscious I'd left Lost off but they are hard boards to get hold of here for a look. Fins setups so important.
Thanks. Not a board I'm familiar with. Shows you how important fins can be though with your different options for different conditions. Glad you're enjoying it.
I love the detail in this thank you. The Nautilus quad works well in small and large waves. Mine is Futures. It's 7.0 at about 44L
Cheers. Good to hear another positive on the Nautilus in small waves.
Your welcome. The Nautilus came recommended from one of the guys at the local board shop. He really enjoys his.
Really liking my Cape Collective 7'0.... Made in Byron...not sure if available in NZ or around other places. Great board. Also got a CI Mid that I never use. My first mid was a McTavish Carver years ago...fun board
Thanks for the info. Don't believe we have Cape Collective here. Seems like that's the board for you.
Love the video Tui, very insightful and easy to digest. I just picked up a 7’0 45.5L Chilli Mid strength myself. Would love to see more videos!
Thanks. And would love to hear what you think about your Mid Strength after you've ridden it for awhile.
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms will do 👍
"Ahh, I wish I knew this before I bought my first middy. I ride 5'6 shortboards and I delved into mids by getting a mid from a log shaper. He tucked the edge in the tail. It was so tracky. I could crack it, but not snap it. Just got a Firewire Boss Up, it's insane. It snaps at 6.10, I've done frontside, backside airs and blown the tail on it. It goes!"
Sounds like you found a good one.
As a surfboard shaper one thing to pick up here is volume. The majority of these boards come in at 40 Litres. Personally I’m more interested in dimensions not volume. But if you wanted to change volume in any design, minor changes in the boards thickness or foil, nose to tail will have the biggest impact on volume. For example in these designs, 1 or 2 mm changes in thickness would push volume up by about 1.5 to 2 litres. So you don’t necessarily need to increase length. Cheers
Good to have a shaper chime in. I did notice that they were all around the 40l mark. Wasn't looking at the volume when I picked these boards, but the length. For a bigger guy wanting more volume at this length, or somebody wanting just more volume, that's a good tip.
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms you hit the nail on the head staying with a set length. Focusing on performance for the waves you experience day in, day out. For sure you would have noticed the differences in rocker and rails shapers. Great video, nice work 👏
@@john2097 Thanks
Suggest to consider the Boss Up from Firewire in Volcanic lamination.
That's another one I could have taken a look at. Everybody's making them now. I guess even Kelly's coming to accept he's growing old. :-)
I demoed a Boss Up and really enjoyed the board too. I tested the helium construction and it is super responsive! Also like the KS-1 quads with this board too.
I had a Seaside for a short while. It was Helium and felt good. Imagine the Boss Up would go well. Looks like it's the replacement for the hole left by the Mid6, maybe more like the Mid6 Mini.
Thanks for this vid bro, I’m a kiwi who lives in Tas my go to bard is 5;10 fire wi mashup, 6;2 FRK + for bigger days and want a PU mid length next to round out the quiver. Want one that can Handel big stuff on west coast.
Glad it was useful. There are some boards in the video you might like to consider. And obviously others I never covered off on, like the Lost Full Strength for example.
My 7'4" HI Moe would have been a progressive short board back in the day, but now its a mid length groveler. How did that happen. Great all around board.
🙂Good to hear.
Hello, I've been following your search for the perfect board. I'm in a bit of the same situation. I'm 47 years old and weigh 86kg. I bought the Big Baron 6.8 38L but it was a mistake, and it's a very specific board, it turns very well but has no rocker and can only be used in twin configuration. I live in Portugal and surf mostly hollow waves were i live and I ended up buying the Al Merrick Big Happy 6.4 and I'm happy, it's good for paddling and turns very well, it's a high performance board but with volume on the front. Of the boards you presented, I would go for the mid strength or M13. I believe that the Harley Ingleby Mini Moe is a good board but only in windless seas. The fish boards like seaside are another style of surf and i am a PU guy i have selled all my epoxy boards
Thanks for the info. Glad you found the Al Merrick works for you. Yes, both Mid Strength and M23 look like good boards. Interesting your comment on Mini Moe. Worth noting. Cheers.
Hi,I had a 7' seaside and beyond and never really gelled with it. I then purchased a 6'8 big Barron and found it a lot more fun but likes a fatter wave as there is very little rocker.Recently I bought a Chili 7' full strength and love it I have only ridden it in larger waves but can highly recommend
@user-vl2su1uj4o Trial and error can be expensive, right. Glad you got to the board that works for you. Interested to know how you find the Chilli Full Strength when you get it out in small waves.
@@StephenCreighton-i5f I agree with you big baron likes large walls. Before Big Baron i was interest in the full strenght even before the annoncement. If you ride the full little was give us a feedback.
@@StephenCreighton-i5f Hi Stephen do you have more feed back about the Full Strength? thank you
Get the Seaside and beyond (maybe in Vocanic for the durability)
Definitely a popular choices, particularly with older surfers.
I am a little off-topic, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Jim Banks Revolution, with his Future Form bottom? Our local shaper has made a test board with similar bottom contours for us all to try. Lots have tested it, including myself, and it's messed with all our brains. Im not yet sold and still in the research stage, but it took off like no other board I have ridden. He could well be onto something. We are surfing punching, hollow beach breaks.
Looks like a really interesting board. Can't get them here so I can't handle, and I've never seen one. Not a mid-length as such. That extended vee seems to find favour with some shapers, Chris Christenson being one. Not much of a twin finner, myself. Remember being out at Uluwatu in the early eighties with Jim Banks. He was destroying it and riding twin fins then, too, from memory.
Many thanks for your thoughts. Appreciate it's off-topic to your video. I thought you would have some insight with your experience, so thanks again.
Be intereseted to know how your research turns out for you.
I have a revolution and it's fast and turns well but it's a short board for me at 6 6. The Christenson Flat Tracker 2 has a similar lower stringer but not nearly as scooped.
@@blinksurf many thanks for your thoughts.
I haven't watched it yet but the tolhurst mid 6 is an out standing board it would be the most tuned up mid length around. And it can handle real waves as well.
The Mid6 was the first mid-length that really caught my eye. Seemed like the one for me until the Mid6 Mini came out. Unfortunately, Harley Engleby only does FCS to sell his model of fins and I'm a Futures guy, so that's one less sale.
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms I completely understand I'm a FCS guy so I won't buying a firewire board now
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms maybe the s boss then ?? It looks pretty nice . To many mid lengths are just for cruising even the model that DHD do maybe worth a look as well ??
Apparently the Boss Up isn't as high performance as the Mid6. Seems to sit between the CI M23 and the Mid.
