First play: Question that has to be asked of the official is did he try to throw him at the bench? If so, he's gone for flagrant. Definitely the 15. Second play: And I've got ANOTHER late hit there. And the question I have on that one, that looks to be two consecutive plays too. Third: Good no-call, but given what has apparently already gone on in the game... Fourth: Definite DB UC 72 Purple. Could be more than that.
Could you please put what position your working with in video description if possible? I like to pull up particular mechanics/topics as I think about them. I appreciate your videos.
About the 10-minute mark - I believe that was a legal touch signal indicating an eligible receiver.
Does it matter if the downfield block is disengaged BEFORE the pass leaves the QBs hand?
In addition to false start I would also say that the WR is offsides at 5:11
At 17:30, I would have ruled this a Personal Foul (tripping) instead of DPI. More effective.
I was considering becoming a coach in the future. Would it be wise to study these rules before getting a coaching certification?
21:03 Good Dead ball officiating1
Just a reminder that the option for the offended team to have the clock start on the snap applies to both live and dead ball fouls including non-player and unsportsmanlike.
I don’t think that is OPI because the ball wasn’t in the air nor passed the line of scrimmage. Maybe I’m wrong. Am I? Thanks
16:52 looks like this block occurs in the FBZ, isn’t that legal by linemen in the FBZ or does the chase-mode element override the FBZ allowance?
Once the ball leaves the FBZ doesn’t it go away?
Thank You very much, from Spain. Your videos help us to improve our officiating level.
Thank you so much for watching. I am so glad they are helping you. Please keep me updated on your progress throughout the season.
greeting from iowa. Im kinda wondering if if it was something that was said more that the ball itself
Good point but I don't think that was the case. Thank you for watching and commenting.
16:51 idk
I agree. Video is not detailed but looks like a block in the side/shoulder as the defender is turning toward the runner, which is fully allowed.
Great job again 👍🏽
Great stuff as always, Brian! Found this channel doing my pre-season prep, and I know it'll be a staple of weekly/pregame film review going forward. Cheers from VA for a safe and successful season!
Thank you for the kind comments. Best of luck to you and your crew this season.
Brian I have a correction towards your first intentional grounding video/example. Rule 7-5-2 exception: 2C states, the passer is the only player to possess the ball after the snap ends is the only player who can intentional throw into an area not occupied by an eligible receiver. I believe the video illustrated a double handoff which make it illegal for grounding.
You state the rule correctly however we cannot penalize a passer for starting his motion then getting hit and the ball going in a place which isn’t in his control. We have to judge the entire action not just where the ball ends up.
Brian, I don't usually say much on these, but on your IDP at 11:34, the lineman are on the 30 when the pass is released. If I am seeing this correctly, the LOS is the 31. I don't think this should be a foul for Ineligible downfield on a pass. Just one man's opinion. Your information about the clock was spot on.
If that is the case then I was incorrect and it should not have been called. Incorrect call for me!
@@WPIALFootballOfficials I've made the call incorrectly more than I care to admit.
@@briandow2974 I actually noticed that watching it back as well (our crews game). Hard call because the ball goes past the line of scrimmage and typically those middle screens are designed to send OL to second level and catch the ball behind LOS. So when the RB and the ball go beyond LOS it’s natural to think Ineligible Downfield. Tough call but definitely a great one to review with the crew.
@billyb60046 do you then have OPI on the slot receiver at the top of the screen?
@@ab5879 I think the receiver is trying to get past the D so I don’t think this is OPI.
I don’t see how you arrived at a no call on the first aiding the runner clip. (-24 min. Mark) it appears that #8 clearly puts both hands on the back of the QB and begins to push. Seems text book aiding. What am I missing?
I agree with you, by the book this would seem like a penalty. If they were just pushing the pile and maybe made inadvertent contact with the ball carrier, that'd be fine. The narrator seems to think if there's any contact with anyone else besides the ball-carrier, that allows it, which seems on the wrong end of the expectation spectrum.
This is the interpretation that our state has with regards to this foul.
Watching from NY. Thank you for making this informative video.
Glad it was helpful!
Good Video. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Thank You Brian for all your help! Have A Nice Day! John "Dino" Decolati
You are welcome! Best of luck!
Thank you Brian
Welcome!
Another good and informative video! Great job and please continue to share, it’s a great tool if your trying to get better as an official
Thank you for watching! I am glad they are helpful.
08:00 Great call and recognition of the helmet coming off the ball carrier. I hope the they also talked to him about continuing to play without a helmet as you could do illegal participation. 08:55 I disagree with you on this play as I have both RB pushing on the QB assisting in forward movement of the QB. However, I defer to your state's interpretation of aiding the runner.
Thank you for your comments and for watching!
At 14:46, it looks like the defender (white) is making a play for the ball with his left hand, not the offense (red). Red receiver continues to drive forward. This looks like OPI to me, if anything. Not DPI as mentioned in the video. Curious if I am missing something. Thanks Brian for these videos, love watching.
He is making a play but he uses his hand as leverage on the WR shoulder not allowing the WR to jump. That’s how I see it. The film isn’t the best so I can also understand your point of view.
At 20:10 in the film, the deep wing has to be focused on the tackle, sideline, and potential fumble. The opposite deep wing or the near LOS should pick up this BSB. I do not think the near deep wing can be expected to get a BSB and miss a potential fumble. It should be a foul but others need to see it.
If the deep wing is further back he/she can see the tackle and the block. That is why I mentioned about not being so close to the action.
@@WPIALFootballOfficials Just one person’s opinion here but I think expecting an official to see a threatened sideline, judge a legal tackle, get the progress spot, and rule on a potential down/fumble and still expect that official to see a BSB two or three yards away from your focus is asking too much. Just my simple opinion. Maybe I’m wrong.
These training videos are so good, I let the ads run. Thanks for all you do, cheers from Virginia!
Awesome! Thank you!
Great stuff, really appreciate the extensive breakdown! For the potential BSB 20:50, a way I like to think of it is: the blocker's arms are like the suspension on an old car. If the car bottoms out going over a bump, sure the suspension might have been engaged, but the force was transferred directly from the body of the car (helmet/shoulder of the blocker) to the ground (player being blocked). If the suspension gives, but takes most of the force of the bump, we're fine, no harm done.
Thank you for watching. I've never heard that analogy, and if it works for you it is a great way to look at BSB.
Thank you so much for posting these each week and each year! I am a newer official who has learned a bunch from your videos! I have a question about the blindside block @20:44. The definition of a blindside block established by the committee is “a block against an opponent other than the runner, who does not see the blocker approaching,” and now results in a 15-yard penalty. The committee also states that the blindside block “involves contact by a blocker against an opponent who, because of physical positioning and focus of concentration, is vulnerable to injury. Unless initiated with open hands, it is a foul for excessive and unnecessary contact when the block is forceful and outside of the free-blocking zone.” Given the above information, I do feel this action by the blocker would warrant a blindside block so long as the defender did not see the blocker approaching. Thoughts? Thank you!
Knowing the rules is great, however, knowing how the apply the rules makes an average officials great. We all strive for consistency and I do not think we could say with 100% certain that the defender did not see it coming especially with the force of the hit in his breastplate. I think it is in our best interest to treat that type of block as legal.
@@WPIALFootballOfficials Gotcha, and yes I agree that we can't know whether the defender saw the blocker coming so I see your reasoning. Thanks!
Thank you Brian, great stuff as the season starts
Thank you for watching.
Play #2, (7:00 -ish) that LT is also off the LOS. He's almost even with the FB. Could have had Illegal Formation also.
I saw 5 in the backfield there too. Could’ve been 3 different flags on the O, Yikes!
This is a terrible angle to tell. The camera angle being in front gives an appearance that the tackle is further away than he is. I'll give the benefit of the doubt to the HL here.
To make this call we would have to see a shot right down the LOS. I will give the wing official the benefit of the doubt on this one that the formation was legal.
Although we already had an ineligible down field, at the least the wing or TE on the left side was either in the backfield (illegal formation) or he was on the line and would have been another ineligible down field.
21:37 the lineman peeling back for the blindside block; I believe the linesman got it. I think the 3rd replay the film goes far enough to show him chunk a flag that direction👍🏽 And thanks for posting these, I wait to see them each week!!
Thanks for the note. I do not keep track of who works the games and the officials who worked the games know who did and didn't throw a flag. These are purely for training purposes and not to point out issues with particular crews or people.
At about 5:53 in the clip, it was mentioned that there cannot be Roughing the Kicker on the quick kick because team K was not in a scrimmage kick formation? Technically, there still can be roughing the kicker. There can be no roughing the snapper, but there still can be roughing the kicker. Please confirm or deny.
There is no roughing the snapper and kicker since they are not lined up in scrimmage kick formation.
@@WPIALFootballOfficials Thank you for the great video. I do want to say that while roughing the snapper does require a legal scrimmage kick formation, roughing the kicker does not hold any such restrictions. 9-4-5, 2-32-8
@@WPIALFootballOfficials Great video but 9-4-5 doesn't include A having to be in scrimmage kick formation for roughing the passer. Which rule requires it?
R's contact/block with K was first inbounds and forced OOB. Not enough to flag for PF from my angle. Enforcement spot was end of the kick. Should have been enforced end of the RUN. (ALL P/F enforced as dead ball fouls)
It may have been inbounds however it was well past the time he scored. It was unnecessary and a flag for a PF is supported in that instance. Thank you for catching the enforcement slip up.
What focal length is being used for this?
Emphasizing clock awareness and good clock mechanics, aside from proper forward progress spots, what could be more crucial to the purity of the game than that? Everything else is judgement.
Thank you for the comment
Thank you for doing these training videos, Brian. Much appreciated even in Nebraska. I will comment on the holding call (play begins at the 10:55 mark). You voiced support for the call. Though our view from the bird's nest video is limited, I wonder if the defender's own momentum caused him to stumble. There was very little initial engagement, I don't see any significant turning of the the defender's shoulders, and he did not go all the way to the ground as I think he would have if illegally grabbed and thrown.. In the reality of the game, that center needs to get the hands of the defender off in order to execute the screen blocking. I feel this flag was unmerited. Curious of others' impressions. No, I am not a former offensive lineman. :)
Why does there have to be a turn of the shoulder? The OL throwing him, made him stumble and took him out of the play. There was an inside grab and not a push. We cannot allow OL to get an advantage on this type of action.
Great job. Love your analysis. Makes is all better
Thank you for the comment. I am glad you learn something from the videos.
I love these videos and training aids.... I'm not a western Pa guy (District 11) but nonetheless they're great and educational.
And on the first play you were talking about 4th down situational mechanics, the play wouldn't have counted as it was an illegal formation. They had 5 players in the back field.
@@jettacopI am not sure I agree with you. The player at the LOS at the bottom is back but I think he still would qualify as being on the LOS (breaking the center’s backside).
Play two looks like it could be an illegal shift. The QB goes in motion just after the TE puts his hand down to get set. Not sure he was quite set when the QB was in motion.
There is a brief moment where the player is set prior to the qb moving. We as officials want quality calls that affect the game. Every call we make we should be comfortable calling the winning TD back in the biggest game of the year in our area. I would not call an illegal shift in this case.
@@WPIALFootballOfficials Was there one second before the snap? I think I would have an illegal shift unless you're confident there was the one second.
On the touchdown play with the dead ball foul, even if it had been a live ball foul and A scored, A has options to enforce on the the try or succeeding kickoff under 8-2-2.
Thank you for correcting me
On goal line mechanics does the short wing have the outside guy of the formation and does trips change the key? I believe Brian said in the video that the short wing had the 2 inside guys. Just a clarification.
Technically yes but you’re going to let the play dictate your coverage especially since no one is pressed.
At the 22:00 play you’re talking about the RB passing the ball forward to the QB…. Are you saying this is illegal? They are behind the LOS and it is the first pass during the down… by my understanding, legal. Please elaborate
No that is not what I was saying. The call was the passer was across the LOS when throwing the forward pass which was not the case.
@@WPIALFootballOfficials oh ok… thank you for the clarification
Thanks for doing this video Brian, gives us a lot of things to think about heading into the season
Thank you for watching.
Out of curiosity, why is the home team wearing white?
That is a good question to which I do not have an answer.
Around 20:13 on your video for that touchdown, you noted another 2/3 seconds went off. Is that still on the Field Judge to check the clock when they are motioning for the TD but in addition to that, they are trying to clear the play and no extra curricular action. Or does it fall on one of the other officials to assist during that play to get that time right? I know you have the side judge to assist you on clearing the play so the right answer is probably to let him clear that why you are watching the clock
The entire crew is responsible for the clock but the Field Judge is primary. That person should be keeping it on his/her wrist and checking it with the game clock after each play late in the half game. So even if there is cleanup needed with the players, a simple check with the watch and the GC can be made after the players or situation is handled. Even a quick glance to the clock as they are crossing the GL will give you a reference point too prior to cleaning up.
Glad to see you back! I’ll be waiting for the next training video to drop, and thank you for making them👍🏽
Thank you for watching.
Happy to see you back for another season!
Thank you. Glad to be back and thank you for watching.
