    Very wise to use the mylar bags. Doing dishes on trail is a pain. The Motts fruit snacks are a great alternative for candy. I used to love Ramen-bombs but with crackers instead of spuds. I greatly admire your efficiency and organization. They allot you more time and lower stress. 😊 This video made me hungry. 😂 Take care Molly ✌️

    I recall one of your first vids and your own prepared foods, seemed heathy. I agree that these above are processed and would be unhealthy for the kidneys/liver over a longer period. I often think of what the astronauts eat to maintain health. You are like them in trying to make the best options for health. Sadly, processed 'foods' lead. How about dried fruits over gummies, something like raisins or prunes, dates, figs. I love watching Captain Jack chomped down on a bar of cheese, as you mentioned for yourself. I have been watching 'woman off grid with a dog' prep dehydrated foods from Thrive Life, how about something like that, has meats, vegs, grains... very cool. Something I often see used are ramen and instant potatoes. Enjoying that you share,

    Interesting! That's a good idea with the bags. I often wondered about the final health outcome of those hiking the trail, as to what they were eating and or as to why they were so run down near the end. That's a lot of stress on the human body and not everyone seems to be able to come out strong in the end. You definitely must be doing something right to still maintain your health and finish strong. I see some people were using homemade freeze dried meals. Have you ever considered that? You have a lot of good information. Thanks for sharing! Oh yeah, the braids look good on you!🤩 Happy Trails! 🥾🌲🏔️🦌🌅🙏

    Add jerky vs meat sticks. Not as processed, more protein and some basic fats. Flexible in that you can add to pasta meals, eat alone and light weight. Cold soak oatmeal [add powdered milk] with dried fruit is great for breakfast. Again, not ultra processed. light weight and minimal sugars. Good informative video.

    Thanks for the informative video. I have 2 questions: 1. Do you find making these hiking-related, post-trail videos helpful in staving off the blues many hikers seem to get after a thru-hike? 2. Did you maintain, gain, or lose weight on your trail diet?

    • @mollyroseoutdoors

      I think making these videos has helped since I get to continue to talk about and share my experiences 😊 I lost about 8-10lbs while on the trail. I wasn’t looking to loose weight, but it was hard to eat enough food to maintain it.

    Interesting. Carb-heavy. Maybe that’s all that’s available, but I’d like to learn if a healthy-fats and healthy-proteins diet, with minimal “unhealthy” carbs, is possible, on the AT. I, kind-of, suspect that isn’t, really, possible, except, maybe, on a, supported, hike. Thanks. 🙂

    • @hope2someday691
      @hope2someday691 4 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I was on a low carb diet for a little over a month (I was in Ketosis). I decided to go for a 30 mile bike ride. I started out at a brisk pace (17 MPH). At 20 miles I completely crashed my system. I almost blacked out. I had to lay on the ground for about a half hour while my body converted fats to carbs. A town was close and I babied my ride there I loaded up on carbs and went home slowly. I felt sick for two days after. Moral of the story, match your carbs to your physical demands or it gets ugly.

    • @SteveinSWVA
      @SteveinSWVA 4 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @ I understand. Thanks. I’ve been there, too. But, hiking seems like the ultimate long, slow, burn. Seems it could, safely, be done, using high-quality fats, and high-quality proteins, mostly. Maybe I’m wrong - I’m not a nutritionist. I was disappointed, but not surprised, to see all the packaged items, in this video. While I’m not anti-carb, I am, pretty much, anti-packaged-food-carbs. Just wondering if there isn’t a healthier way. A non-grain way…

    • @mollyroseoutdoors
      @mollyroseoutdoors ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      It’s possible to eat a less carb heavy diet on a thru hike. A lot more nuts, jerky, peanut butter, protein powder, etc (these things are heavy though). Resupply boxes would probably be key to success with this since you don’t always have all the options available in towns.

    Hi Molly! So nice to see your smiling face again : ) This was a fun addition to your thru-hike vids. It was so fun & informative to watch your hike, especially because you aimed the camera in front of you a lot, so I got to see a lot more of the Trail than I get just living nearby (near Harpers Ferry). I'd be curious if you have thought about a video where you describe some of the emotional/mental/spiritual experiences you had & how assimilating back to Life has been, & what lessons you're learned about yourself. Take care & happy trails!!

    At the end you mentioned going into Washington, D.C., which is only a bit over an hour away from Harpers Ferry. You can take a train from Harpers Ferry into DC by using the MARC commuter rail service (the Brunswick Line). I think it takes you to Union Station, which is just a couple of blocks away from the Capitol and is linked by subway to the sights and museums along the Mall, etc. It looks like there is also an Amtrak link to Union Station, as well.

    I bicycled the length of Skyline Drive. I agree there are some awesome views. I biked half then overnighted in Big Meadow campground and did the second half the next day. In my opinion bicycling Skyline Drive or the Blue Ridge Parkway is much better than driving it. I will get to see the Backpacking side of this in 2025 as I will be hiking NOBO in about 5 weeks from today.

    That sounds amazing, Moly Rose! Swimming and a New York visit while hiking the Appalachian Trail? That’s the ultimate trail-life balance! 🏞🗽 Like, 'I’m hiking from Georgia to Maine… but why not swing by the Empire State Building while I’m at it?' 😄 And swimming? History! You hiked by so many historical sites. You hiked within 7 miles of Antietam battlefield, which was the bloodiest day in American history. If you had gone up the hill from AT Conservancy in Harper's Ferry there was a battlefield at Bolivar Heights. Harper's Ferry switched hands at least 8 times during the Civil War and was home to the largest surrender of US troops up until World War II. You did hike directly though the Battle of South Mountain, C&O Canal Towpath and several spots the Continental Army marched during the American Revolution. You hiked over several historical rivers.. Potomac, Shenandoah, James. You hike near Gettysburg, Monterrey Pass, Jefferson's Rock and multiple battles in the strategic Shenandoah Valley. But, the pool, sauna, lakes and hot springs were definitely a better option after so much hiking. Biking the Creeper Trail, too. I hear some people aquablaze in VA. Great insight, Molly.

    Good video. Everyone has some non hiking event, unplanned, I suppose. Totally random - in 2023, due to the extreme high water in Maine, we were diverted over Sugarloaf Mtn in Maine to avoid the flooded Carrabassett. It was Saturday, so the ski lifts were bringing visitors up and down Sugarloaf for sightseeing. My buddy Ranger had never seen or been on a ski lift, so we loaded up the packs and rode down. A highlight for him. Ate lunch at the base before shuttling to The Maine Roadhouse. Random and short but a non hiking event. Philmont

    I'm a bit jealous of that beach scene in the beginning. As a photographer those conditions were sweeeeet!! LOL! Fog and the ocean for long exposure images. Skyline Drive is so beautiful. I lived in Winchester, VA which is very close to Front Royal and loved taking road trips up there. I'm lucky enough to live in the Lehigh Valley area of PA very close to many AT trailheads. I hike it all the time. It's also only about a 2 hour drive to NYC. It's fun to park in New Jersey at Port Imperial and take a ferry across the Hudson River. Interesting that you didn't include eating a half gallon of ice cream in this list! LOL! Fun video, thanks for sharing!

    Very nice you were able to share some additional memorable experiences with your fellow hiking friends and family while thru hiking the Appalachian trail. Great info for any new thru hiker for 2025!

    Well, at least Bandit got a good run on the beach. 😊 Maine is a tough example; so much is too far away from the AT. Post hike would be the better option to explore. There's quite a bit to do close to the Gorham, NH section of the trail. Scenic roads, waterfalls, quick vista trails, theme parks, and amenities. 8:15 <-- the look on your face when you saw the pool. 😁 Idyllic summer refreshment. Great video, take care Molly. ✌️
