    Happy Saturday, Gents! Our Christoper has eloquently expressed what we are all thinking: your channel and videos are so informatively entertaining - or should that be entertainingly informative? Excellent work today, with great reviews on both pot and mug. I'm afraid today it was coffee for me as French Toast was the order of the morning, it being Saturday. Old habits and all that. Nonetheless, how nice to have a winner no matter the choice in today's challenge - it's about time you gentlemen had a truly winning challenge. Well done. Happy rest of the weekend. Cheers!

    Good morning Gentlemen, Thank You for another great episode. It is always a great pleasure to listen to your commentary. I am an avid tea drinker and thanks to You , I discovered the Thompsons teas. Since I discovered your channel , I have watched every episode you posted. You gentlemen are doing a splendid job about a supermarket teas and coffees. Speaking of the subject, I have a very old proper english tea pot from 1800 made by Henry Watson pottery with the capacity about 1 liter. If brewing in the pot, I add 6 tea bags of thompsons everyday, signature or Irish breakfast tea ad brew for 3 minutes. I measured 1 tea bag of thompsons tea and found to contain about 3.18 grams of tea, which gives me a out 18.30 grams for the pot and gives a nice strong brew. If i brew in the regular size mug I add 1 teabag and brew for 2 to 3 minutes. I found that Thompsons tea bags contain more generous amounts of tea 3.18 grams, than other brands. I find Thompsons teas to be an excellent product in my humble opinion. Thank You again Gentlemen for your great work and please keep your channel going. It is very much appreciated. By the way if it would be possible, would you please rewiev Thompsons Titanic tea. I would like very much to hear your opinion about it. Thank You and take care.

    Good morning, Gents! Happy Wednesday. I must confess I am not a green tea person, though am quite partial to white teas which have become quite popular here in the States over the years. Well done lads, good to see you relaxing and recovering from your supermarket trials. I've been lucky enough to see the original Sabbath line-up 3 times, just wish I could remember them better 😆 Bill Ward, best drummer to have lived IMO, the king of tempo-drops and timing transitions, nobody does it like him. A fashion icon he is not however. Good to hear Ozzy wants to do a final hurrah with Bill, the last time I saw them was in 90's at the Apollo Manchester, Ozzy shambled on stage like a zombie but still roused himself and put on a good show once the crowd got him going. 🤘

      Nige here, yes, we do just leave the bag in the pot, but personally when removing the bag from the mug I don't squeeze it. The bag is flipped out into the 'tea bag bowl', usually leaving residue on the work top that annoys Mrs Nige, as I don't clear it up straight away as I am off to the shed to film.

    So nice to see you gents enjoying a lovely cuppa after so many recent unappealing disappointments. During the summer, I usually make a pot of tea so that I have some left for a refreshing glass of iced tea after enjoying a cup of hot brew. Yesterday's high was 99F degrees and today's high temperature is forecast to be 98F degrees, so iced tea is a must come such stifling afternoons. Conversely, there are cold, blustery winter days when I still make a pot, knowing that the only way to thwart the misery and cold of the season is with multiple back to back cups of First Flush Darjeeling. I agree with Chrisdado: one teaspoon per cup and one for the pot - a tried-and-true formula for one of life's greatest pleasures. This morning was Harney & Sons White Peach, a delectably delicate brew that yields a gorgeous iced tea for the hottest hours of the day. Of course, I don't know why I am moaning about the heat as I'm sat here typing my comment in the luxuriated environs of an air-conditioned terraced house. Perhaps it's knowing that the heat is just on the other side of the wall that flusters one - and I do have that merciless fifteen-foot walk to the garage when I must venture forth into the world. Methinks it's the knowledge of iced tea being my reward upon returning home that makes the journey possible in these diabolical temperatures. As always, thanks for the review and for all that you do for the tea-enjoying community. Cheers!

    • @punktea8142
      @punktea8142 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The amount of tea in the pot really depends on the size of the pot, and or the amount of water you put in. Many years ago a friend made some tea in the pot using that very same formula, but it was not a very big pot. The cup of tea was like tar, not really to my taste! We will get round to iced tea at some point, once the rain stops here.

  • @chrisdado
    @chrisdado 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Perhaps the old teapot adage "one teaspoon per person and one for the pot" may be relevant here if you are using extra water for the pot? Are you chaps using extra water because your pots are to large to submerge the teabags with the same amount of water? Perhaps it may be a more level playing field to use 2 bags in the pot with double the water volume? Food for thought, I accept no responsibility for extra visits to the loo if you hate wasted tea 🤣

    • @punktea8142
      @punktea8142 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We have tried a few combos off camera, and decided one and a half to two mug fulls in the pot. If you think about it, when you go out for a cuppa and get a pot you usually get one and a half to two cups out of the pot.

    Sorry Nige but I'm with Anders on this one for Earl Grey, Its Twinings or upwards. Its just not cheap to make properly. I bought a box of Ahmad Tea loose leaf Earl Gray (no bergamot, lots of lime/grapefruit/orange oil flavours), initially disappointed I had to remind myself I'd only paid £6 for 500g. While not a good tea on its own I've found the fake bergamot flavour makes it an interesting 'pinch-of' additive to other teas. 🙂

  • @Mark723
    @Mark723 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Nice try, Anders; however, methinks Nige is unflappable. Earl Grey is such a subjective tea, as the flavor all depends upon the quality and amount of bergamot used. Nonetheless, never a good sign when one notices that "talcum powder-type wiff" when describing the initial aroma of one's Earl Gray. For me, however, I shall spend the few extra schillings and purchase a box of Twining's Lady Grey, which is such a delicately delicious Earl Grey option. And it makes a wonderful iced tea during the summer months. Sorry, gents - I know I have just sent the two of you into fits and convulsions at the mention of iced tea. Keep in mind, though, when the thermometer reads 100F+ degrees, one needs all the help one can get to endure. Cheers for the review, especially when you two had to endure such an unpleasant tasting contest.

    • @punktea8142
      @punktea8142 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's not just Earl Grey, but all teas are subjective, each to their own, there is no right or wrong. As for iced tea, we keep meaning to look into this, we will at some point, it is just such a dreadful summer in the UK at the moment the motivation is lacking.

    Nige with the Denby Marrakesh 👌class. I think the premium instant coffees all suffer from the same problem. Cheap robusta coffee beans fuelled the standard instant coffee market for decades (and still does for non-premium ones). Then more people learned about arabica beans and their superior flavour and started expecting better instant coffees. Soon we had '100% arabica' premium instants, which mostly failed to capture it's qualities. Now it seems premium instants have reverted back to a perpetual reformulation of blends and labels to sell it. I don't drink instant anymore but when I did I preferred the cheaper, bolder, robusta dominant ones. They were honest, these premiums are expensive and seldom deliver I find.

    Hi Guys, interesting comparison, I have not tasted Aldi, as I don't have one near me. I have tasted Lidl's, which I find to be a decent enough instant coffee and I'm sure there will be many that say there is no such thing. As a pensioner without a car, I mainly shop in Lidl, who are my nearest supermarket, It's a fairly small one but there is a bigger one ten minutes away by bus. I tend to use the one within walking distance and if I buy more than I can carry, which seems to happen all the time now, I get a bus round the corner to ease the load. I will watch your series of comparisons with interest, thanks guys.

They decide its actually 2 products so they can increase their marketing budget, then order that the dust is shaken out of the original blend and sold as a regular tea. The remains of the original blend are then packaged as 'gold'. See, simples! 🤣

    Alright - the visual switch-up for this video is just too much to handle without one's first cup of the morning! At the beginning of the video, I think that Nige should take the two boxes and pretend to do a mock boxing match to portray the Supermarket Battle. This may help capture more of the Millennial and Gex Z viewer markets. Thanks for the reviews and the result, not that I'll be rushing out to purchase either of these products to replace my beloved Twinings. Nonetheless, always a good morning when spent with you two gentlemen. Cheers!

      I know, it’s all too much isn’t it, (Anders here) we should be more Ant & Dec and stay just where we are. If I remember correctly, you’ve come up with several suggestions all of which are excellent but this lowest of low-rent Jake Paul suggestion is the best so far (can’t say that we’ll follow it up 😂). Thanks for the kind words Mark, and yes, stick with the Twinings, you can’t go wrong.

    Gentlemen, I brew my tea for 30 minutes, rather than thirty seconds. I have two bags in a large mug, with a touch of milk, this leaves a very dark brew which puts most people off. Each to their own, I guess, I am currently drinking Lidl's Gold Blend, which has been my stand by for years now. I find it a quite acceptable brew and as a pensioner, I find the price equally acceptable. Needless to say, I won't be trying the new blend new{old}, shape PG Tips, they are rather fortunately, out of my league.

    The very chic brand, Tea Forte, has pyramid-shaped bags (and a cute little leaf dunker), so not sure why PG would have spent fifty million pounds to decide to revert to flat bags. I have used flat bags for my entire life (with the exception of Tea Forte bags when received as gifts). Lipton tea is shite, which is why sane Americans drink Twinings. Thanks for the review; nonetheless, for me, tea is one of those things on which one should spend a bit more as the cost differential is minimal and the enjoyment that much more rewarding.

      I think you're right Chris. Once we move on from Instant coffee, he'll get it. Coffee and aftershave I've seen become more 'extreme' although Java Lava has been around years, but I've taken my eye off the extreme Philadelphia! I did go down a youtube rabbit hole years ago watching extreme ironing. The acceptable side of extreme I think.

    Good morning, Gents. Thank you for the explanation of "gold" teas. As Granddad always said: "A day you learn something is a day that's not wasted." How nice that you've finally gotten to enjoy a decent cuppa in ages. And thank you for teaching us the pronunciation of Lidl, as here in the States we pronounce the name brand with a long "I" as opposed to the short "I." I know you know of what I speak as we of a certain generation learned phonics well before a later generation discovered it and got hooked. We Yanks tend to default to long-vowel pronunciation of European words, especially name brands, as we think it lends an air of sophistication to such words, and we always think of anything European as being sophistication incarnate. That is a challenge with any side-by-side taste comparison: the overlap contamination. How about a simple water cracker? Good ol' Carr's should do the trick between samplings. Or, there's always a reverse comparison after one has rinsed out one's mouth of previous samplings - this way, the contamination is equal, and if a cross contamination to the process is present, at least it affects both samples. Nonetheless, you've given us decision and saved many a household on their weekly grocery allowance. Well done, Nig, on reaching a quick decision, which always lends more weight to that decision: it must be definitive if it's quick . Please tell me I have misunderstood that your next video will be the last. I have come to enjoy our weekly outings and find them to be the highlight of the day. With whom shall I share a lovely twice-weekly cuppa (Remember that Typhoo television advert...?)? Will my morning cup become a mourning cup (As the kids say these days: do you see what I did there...?)? This morning's brew was a simple, yet dependable, Twinings Irish Breakfast. I can now face the day thanks to Twinings and the Punk Tea Gents, who always lend an air of sophistication to anyone's day. Cheers!

      Anders here, hello to you in the states there. A few things to unpack here. I think as a nation, the UK has taken a punt on Lidl being pronounced as we do. I've just had a quick look and apparently it should be pronounced Leedle. Ho hum. I don't know why we don't cleanse the palate, like you say a cracker or a quick swig of water would do the trick. And yes, you have misunderstood. We're not going anywhere! I think we were saying it's the end of the Lidl v Aldi or is it!? And just to finish off, a Twinings Irish breakfast tea! You just can't go wrong there. Thank you for the kind words, once again proving that tea drinkers are the best.

    So glad you chaps took this on, and yes I agree fully. Here's another curve ball for you, bear with me.. Unilever, the previous PG brand owners made no secret that despite the brands market dominance, were not making enough money from PG sales. 2022 arrives and they sell cheap to Liptons. In my search for a PG replacement I managed to get a box of Liptons Yellow Label bags last week (no easy task today in the UK, even though Liptons is a European company). If you can see where I'm heading, you're right. The new PG bags are Lipton's regular tea in a bigger bag, the flavour, lack of brightness and malty nothingness is near identical. PG was always an Assam/Kenyan/Ceylon blend, it got worse over the years as Unilever lowered the percentage of the more expensive Ceylon tea which lends it the slightly fruity and bright notes, but it remained a blend of the 3 teas. Lipton's plantations are almost exclusively Kenyan, and this reflects in the flavour. Its no coincidence IMO that Liptons own brand regular teabags have vanished from UK wholesalers.. I'm pointing my finger at you Liptons 😝👺

    Good morning Gentleman, First of all thank You for the fabulous job you doing and for the great channel about the tea. I am a tea drinker and was looking for a long time to find a channel, that would be doing reviews of teas and coffees in an understandable and interesting ways. Happily, I found You. Please keep doing this great work. I hope more people will subscribe to your channel. I encourage every one to do so. As of the afore mentioned PG tips, i agree with You wholeheartedly, why do they have to sort of improve what was already very good tea. These big conglomerates, when they gooble up smaller tea firms, always ruin the original products by so call new and improved. I drink a lot of tea and noticed if something is new and improved usually is never better. Thank you again for your great job. Best regards from USA. Ps. If You would be kind enough to review at some point and time Ahmad and Dilmah teas that would be much appreciated.

    Absolutely agree, the new one is a different tea, and the old pyramid bags much better. It is possible that they actually improve with age; some teas do. Before PG changed, I got a box of PG tips that was fantastic, and I noticed on the side it said that it was only from Kenya. I have compared them all and the new PG is noticeably worse than both the Kenyan and the more Assamy pyramid bags. Thank you for your videos!

    The smile I had seeing that you two made a video about this! I truly do feel vindicated haha. You really explained what has been bothering me so much about the new version by saying bass versus high notes. It's not just that it's a different (and I think much worse) flavor, it's that it's a completely different profile. It totally misses the point of the pyramid version. If you buy PG Tips, you're likely looking for a good functional tea that you can sip throughout the day, something smooth and not too punchy. You're not looking for a harsher, malty (and chemical tasting) tea. So Unilever spent 50 million to make the opposite of what people liked about PG Tips for decades. Wonderful episode, gents. Many thanks from across the pond. :)
