I am a railroad fan with a bent toward passenger trains and more specifically the California Zephyr which makes a scheduled stop in Fort Morgan, CO. I also have been known to chase Union Pacific steam locomotives here in northern Colorado.
Fort Morgan is on the Brush Sub. of the Powder River Division of the BNSF so many unit coal trains pass thru here as well.

A very late Calif. Zephyr #5 in Ft. Morgan on 05FEB2025
This California Zephyr #5 arrived in Fort Morgan at 1054 MST (5 hrs. & 15 mi. late due to mechanical problems with the power units). An extra engine in the form of C44-9W BNSF #4452 was leading the P42s #15 & 30. The train was stopped with car 7 to the station platform for passenger service to 1 person detraining and 2 new fares stepped onboard while a "fresh air" break and leg stretch was had by the passenger onboard. After about 5 minutes of physical activity the double toot was given as a signal to reboard the train. with all passengers, staff and crew back in the train, the high ball was given and on a clear signal at west Ft. Morgan CP the Zephyr continued its westward run with the next stop being Union Station in Denver.
My thanks to the operating crew, passengers and staff for the greetings today.
Everyone please stay safe!
Temp: 36 F. Feels like 32 F.
Expected high: 55 F.

Hi Mike! Was looking for a smokey the bear hatted drill instructor, when I saw the guy doing push ups. Drop and give me 25!😅
Good afternoon Mike jensen My Name is Damien I heard the bnsf was pulling a broken down amtrak train and if you see mandy Tell Mandy Damien Says Hi and tell her that my youtube channel is lone star railfan and more
Yeah the guy doing push-ups has a good idea. He's not smoking.
Yeah Mike this will be interesting to see a BNSF engine pulling an Amtrak train.
there i meant
hi Mike thanks for the catch of the late #5. glad you were thee. have a great rest of your day. calling for an ice storm here tonight and maybe saturday into sunday. come on spring lol
What was all the air noise Mike. The supply of duct tape and bailing wire, is cut off, just like everything else in fed.gov. '.
Afternoon Mike, trust all is well with you. I saw #5 was stopped yesterday afternoon west of Princeton, IL. It held up the SWC #3. Broke down again at Bishop, IL , which allowed #3 to get by and shortly after 6pm, #5 made in Galesburg. But was still there when it became bedtime for me. So wondering if that's where they pickup the BNSF Unit
Good morning Mike! Thanks for the video and enjoy your day!!!!!
😂 Was that RFK Jr doing his pushups?!
Hi Mike-Nice clear sunny Hump Day-Wow look at all the folks smoking & shaken it on their rare break. Haven't heard "All Aboard" in a long time,on that note thanks for hanging in there for that long duration, stay warm & rest up, Jeb 😊
Not good when Amtrak has to be pulled in by a freight engine, but glad it made it here. Bad snow storms near Donner Pass/Tahoe; will 5 make it to S. F.? Or stop in Reno ? It’s 77 here in a “red flag warning” & 2 grassfires in the area at different locations. TY for getting out!
A lot of noise next door today !
Good afternoon, Mike. Glad to see that the Zephyr #5 made it to Fort Morgan safely. The same thing happened to the #1 Sunset Limited while en route to Tucson. They were having mechanical issues in Texas and had to be towed in by the UP 6353 along with P42 11. Good to see you're doing well.
Good afternoon, Gary; Thanks for stopping by along with the comments. It is rare to have a #5 train with a freight motor attached. I have seen several #6 trains with the same. Sadly, this train left Chicago with a wounded unit. From what I could garner, they fought it all the way to Lincoln, Ne. where BNSF has a major yard with spare units available. Then they had to sit for the opposing freight traffic from there thru here. I thought they may have put a UP motor on at Omaha. That was dispelled when they arrived here. Anyway, have a great afternoon and evening. please take care and stay safe!
The good old California stage coach gave passengers a leg-stretching break after a long ride across the prairie last night !
Hi Mike and thanks for the catch of the very late #5 today. It’s been a while since the train has been this late. Probably not a record though. Enjoy the rest of your Wednesday and stay safe!
Good afternoon, Tom; Thanks for stopping by along with the comments. This one was late leaving Chicago due to the problems. Think it will remain so the rest of the way to Oakland yard. Have a great afternoon and evening. Please take care and stay safe!
Well there! I had almost given up. Thanks for hanging in there for us Mike.
Good afternoon, Thomas; Thanks for stopping by and the comments. The sun was warm, and the winds were light. I did enjoy sitting on the bench in the sunshine all bundled up. Good practice for when the sun does rise on a normal timed train. Have a great afternoon and evening. Please take care and stay safe!
Isn't she pretty; needs us pretty people on to make her prettier.!! It's nice to see her in daylight.Hope you've had a nice day so far & it's been blessed . Thank you for # 5.👋😉💥😎🥰😊
Good afternoon. I guess when you’re that late, getting later doesn’t matter. When there is an added engine especially in the lead, who drives? Would an Amtrak engineer take control? Or the substituting engine driver?
Good afternoon Mike from cloudy 61 mid Tenn. Rainy off and on. Does UP takeover in Denver? Trouble on P42, lead or 2 nd unit if you know. Trouble began in Galesburg it appeared. Where did BNSF takeover? Seems a lot of problems beginning on the older P42s but they must last til the ALC42s are able to takeover. Are they still pairing the ALC42s with P42 on Empire Builder run?
Good morning Mike. #5 gave you plenty of time for an extra cup today. Hope you don't get heat stroke out there in that heat wave 😂 I'm happy I never had that smoking habit. Have a great day and be safe.
Good afternoon, David; Thank you for dropping by along with the comments. I am unsure how to handle this condition. It is still on the chilly side of decent. I'll take it and the sun has some heat to it today. Flannel shirt and jacket are still required. The wind has really picked up scouring the cold out of the valley out here. I am happy that I gave that habit up after way too many years. Don't miss them that much. Moe fun to shoot videos of trains. LOL! Have a great afternoon and evening over there. Please take care and stay safe!
Good heavens that’s a lot of folks who got off and exercised! Mark in Iowa.
I didn’t see Marne videoing! I just got a notification he uploaded this also. Mark.
Sleep-in day for Mike, looks like a nice winter day except for the smoker crowd smelling it up.
Where did they pick up the extra engine? Left Galesburg with the two problematic units, as far as I could tell.
Cool to see a daytime video. Looks cold, take care Mike! -Your fan in San Francisco
Good afternoon and thank you for tuning in from San Francisco. I appreciate it. It was good practice for me as won't be much longer to when the sun will have risen before the Zephyr gets here. It was still on the cold side of chilly this morning. Current temp is 60F. at 1320 MST. Lots of wind moving the cold blob farther east. Have a great Afternoon and evening out there. Please take care and stay safe!
Good afternoon Mike! I guess they’re running late! Of course you have clear weather there! Certainly not here in the Heartland this early afternoon! 21 degrees and awaiting the freezing rain to begin! YUCK! Every school around us is dismissing already at 12:30 local time. Iowa DOT has the salt trucks out treating all state and federal highways! They’re reporting a light glaze is about all for us! The ground is warm yet. I wonder what’s with the BNSF leading number 5 today. I didn’t see it in your description. Unless I’m blind 😂. Have a great Wednesday out your way Sir! I am doing what I can here! Mark in Iowa.
Good afternoon, Mike. So much for that string of on-time arrivals. You've put 3 days worth today. My response y'day didn't make it; must have forgot to hit send button. Guess I was too excited about our temps getting up to 79° y'day. Only at 64° today so far. Rest up this afternoon & prepare for tomorrow's surprises. Stay safe and take care.
Hey Mike glad to see the number 5 this morning better late than never! Lol hope you have a great day! Stay warm! Sam in Sacramento
Good afternoon, Sam; Thanks for dialing in as well as the comments. At least it didn't mess with my coffee drinking time. LOL! Both Marne and I had enough coffee for the day. Have a great afternoon and evening out there. Please take care and stay safe!
Good evening Mike. You will probably get another daytime video of 5 in the morning I see. Issues with one of the engines tonight. Looking forward to seeing your video of 5 again tomorrow!
Good morning, Ken; Thank for stopping by as well as the comments. Yep. Ot seems that the Wednesday edition of the Zephyr has had some big problems. I know it sat in Galesburg for a number of hours last night. It is currently in central Nebraska working its way to Hastings. It will make it here sometime around mid-morning. I'll still be on the platform for its arrival. Have a great Wednesday back there. Please take care and stay safe!
Hi Mike, thanks for bearing the cold/windy conditions & the coverage of [#5 this Tuesday-have a great evening stay warm, Jeb😊
Good morning, Jeb; I thank you for dialing in as well as the comments. I am hoping the weather guessers are correct about it warming up today. I know it is still winter but that was enough of it over the past couple of days. Looks to be a daylight edition o the Zephyr out here today. Maybe warmer as well. Have a great Wednesday. Please take care and stay safe!
Hi Mike-Thanks for bearing cold&wind
Glad to see the Zephyr is still running!
Good morning, BOBXFILES; Thank you for tuning in as well as the comments. Yep. They are still running. RRoday's #5 has experienced a host of mechanical issues and is around 4 hours late as it crosses Nebraska. Have a great Wednesday. Please take care and stay safe!
Mike, didn't there used to be a "Denver Zephyr, back in the day? #17 or something like that
Good afternoon and thank you for stopping by as well as the question. Yes. Waaaaaay back in the day there was a Denver Zephyr. I never rode it. Didn't go where I needed to travel to with my parents. It was easier for us to drive to Denver, park near Union Station and board the Rock Island Mountain Rocket headed east and return. Have a great evening. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
Good afternoon Mike. It's very cold & cloudy here& I believe I heard it was in the 80's yesterday.Hope your day has been a good one . Have a blessed day & tbank you for # 5. 👋😉
Good afternoon, Carolyn; I thank you for dialing in as well as the comments. I think we are to get a bit warmer tomorrow. It was wicked cold this morning. Even my camera told me it was cold. LOL! Still on the cool side of cold here. At least the wind has eased off. Hope that you have a great evening down there. Please take care, stay warm, and safe! 🥶🤓🥶👋👍👌🐧🌨❄❄
BRRR!!🥶
Good afternoon, Pamela; Thank=s for dropping by and the comment. The TH-cam chat wants to translate that. LOL 😂😂! Yep. The wind chill was on the really cold side of chilly this morning. It is still chilly. Have a great afternoon and evening. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
@@MikeinmorganThanks, Mike. 😊
A whole lot of stuff. And it looks like you know he could have had a moving company haha! Have a great day.
Good afternoon, Robert; I thank you for tunning in as well as the comments. Yep. That was a couple rooms full of stuff. And then some. I didn't watch hoe they shoehorned it all into the car they had. Have a great afternoon and evening. Please take care, stay warm, and safe back there!
Mornin" Mike. We got up to 71 degrees yesterday over here in GJ. What a difference!
Good afternoon and thanks for dropping by as well as the comments. Don't the Rockies make a great wind break?? 🤣 I noticed that Laramie is warmer than Cheyenne today. Enjoy your heat over there. Please take care and stay safe!
Good morning Mike from 60 WARM mid Tenn. Thunderstorms tomorrow you can bet! Sounds cold and windy there for sure. That lady detraining had enough baggage for a dozen people it appeared even with babe in arms. Stay warm and use lots of that coffee as antifreeze.
Good morning, Ben; Thanks for dialing in along with the comments. Yep. Glad there was another adult to help move everything to the car. Hope they got the child seat strapped in and that tot into the warmth of the car quickly. Same for whatever was in the pet carrier. I'll send some of this Arctic air back your way. I wasn't done with the warm air when this moved in yesterday. Denver will be in the 50s and 60s again today as will a lot of the front range. Laramie as 31 F while Cheyenne was 14 F this morning. Should be the other way around up there. Anyway, have a great Tuesday back there. Please take care and stay safe!
Good morning Mike! Today,we will hit 86° in Phoenix 🌵👋
Good morning, BBQRando; I thank you for stopping by along with the comments. I could sure use some of that 86 F. up here. Or maybe I could funnel some of this 14 F. your way. LOL! Have a great Tuesday down there. Please take care and stay safe!
Good morning Mike ! I think the detraining lady had a tot in one hand and s cell phone in the other ! whatever did people do before we had cell phones?
Good morning, Norman; I thank you for tuning in as well as the comments. She definitely had her hands full. I was taken by the lack of socks and shoes on her child. The cell phones as we know them today are assisting in the dumbing down of America. Yes. I carry one and do not use all the tripe included. The next one will be a flip phone without all the features. Jitterbug has several for the older generation. Anyway, have a great Tuesday. Please take care and stay safe!
good morning Mike thanks for being out in the cold to catch #5 this morning. hope you get your coffee and warm up.
Good morning, Ken; Thanks for dialing in and the comments. The wind chill was a big thing this morning as I was looking directly into the wind. My glasses kept fogging up. LOL! Anyway, have a great Tuesday back there. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
Morning Mike. Good to see Mandy in control of things. Pretty strange weather. The almost daily up and down temps I don't understand. Looks like high 40's today. Still hoping for more moisture though. Everyone have a great day and stay safe.
Good morning, David; I thank you for dropping by and the comments. Laramie was 31 F. while Cheyenne was 14 F. a while ago. We are on the western edge of that really big arctic air mass. It can retreat to the polar areas anytime but sounds as though we will get another wave this weekend. It is strange weather. Anyway, hope it stays mostly away from you up there. Please take care and stay safe!
Good Tuesday morning Mike! Sunny with a few wispy clouds and 6 degrees here in the Heartland! Good heavens! May get to 32 degrees here today I hope! What a difference! Freezing rain forecast tomorrow 😖. Oh well, it’s officially winter yet! Nice to see Mandy again! Have a great day out your way Sir! I’m doing alright staying warm so far. Mark in Iowa.
Good morning, Mark; Thank you for stopping by as well as the comments. Yep. You are getting the brunt of that air mass from the Arctic. we are getting just the western edge of it. Might see the 30s tomorrow out here. The wind chill was the deciding factor this morning. My fingers had gone numb even with the heat packs in the mittens. Back to "normal" now. Have a great Tuesday back there. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
Good morning Mike jensen My Name is Damien I hope next time you Tell Mandy that my youtube channel is Lone star Railfan and more and don't after that The next time she comes Tell Mandy Damien Says Hi
Good morning, Damien; Thank you for dropping by and the comments. I will pass that on if I see her next week. She does check this channel when she has time to do so. Please take care and stay safe!
Good Moring Mike have a great day. take a nap and get ready for another early morning God Bless you
Good morning, Kenny; Thank you for dropping by along with the comments. I may do the nap this afternoon. Still working on bringing the body temperature back to "normal". The furnace is getting a workout this year. May have to fire up the humidifier again as the static electricity is nailing me. Might help with the sense if warmth too. Anyway, have a great Tuesday back there. Please take care, stay warm, and safe!
He was a bit slack of boarding
Yep. He was.
Morning Mike, a Sth Australian on the Morgan platform, its still 30 deg Celsius tonight here, 🍺🍺🇦🇺
Good evening, Robo; Thank you for dialing in and the comments from Australia. We could use some of that 30 c. here. we will get another blast of Arctic air near the end of the week. Have a great evening down under. Please take care, stay cool, and safe!
Good morning. With your cold winter weather, mumbling a wrong engine number is clearly permitted by me and I’d almost expect the engine numbers to be random. LOL! I think there was also a little critter - cat or small dog - also exiting the train.
Good evening, Paul; Thanks for dropping by and the comments. This cold air moved in here yesterday as they had mid-60s in Denver and we struggled to make 30 F. here. Same today. More of this Arctic air this weekend. I too would have liked to have known what was in the pet carrier that came off the train this morning. That carrier and the mom and tot all went together. There's always something on the platform. Hope that you have a great evening over there. Please take care and stay safe!
That's cool you give the necessary information to people. I'm sure everyone appreciates it. Thanks for sharing the video Mike, you have a restful night!
Good morning, Ken; Thank you for dropping by along with the comments. Many have not traveled by rail much and this was a first-time ride for that couple. Some things I am aware of and some I am not. Oh well. Have a great Tuesday. Please take care and stay safe!
Why does someone read the numbers of the engines?
Good evening, Roger; Thank you for dropping by and the question. I say the engine numbers as a double check to myself as I audit the videos before posting. It is habit I generated a long time ago and have not given up. Have a great evening. Please take care and stay safe!
When I worked at Amtrak the OAK crew went all the way to Lovelock before the SLC crew took over and there were constant problems with the SLC crews dying on the law before making it to Lovelock which usually required a fresh crew being flown to Winnemucca and carryalled to wherever the train was
Again, thank you for dialing in and the comments / info. Having studied the track profile west from SLC, it seemed there was at least one crew change between there and Reno. Just unsure where. That has happened out here with a stranded crew between here and McCook. A crew was flown to McCook and taxied west from there to near the Colo/Neb state line. Again, I appreciate the info. My turn on the west side may come later this year and I'll get to experience that run. Please take care and stay safe!
