At Normal Prepping, we're a husband and wife team, dedicated to realistic, down-to-earth prepping. After evacuating due to a wildfire, we learned firsthand the importance of practical preparedness. Our mission is to help you build resilience through useful skills like gardening, canning, food storage, and homesteading.
Belinda draws from her experience living in an earthquake zone, along with her passion for gardening and homesteading. She’s well-read on surviving societal collapse and offers practical tips for self-sufficiency.
Wayne brings years of emergency response experience, including HAZMAT and terrorism incidents. He collected anthrax samples after 9/11 and has extensive training from FEMA, Homeland Security, and is a licensed ham radio operator.
Together, we focus on practical prepping that works for everyday life-without the hype.
Our Moto is: Let’s Prepare Together for whatever Life Throws our way!

Emergency Water Storage: Clever Solutions for Storing Water in Your Home
I was homeless and living in a tent for nearly three years. Living without refrigeration which meant no leftovers, one learns to shop differently. Same with disasters. No power. No refrigeration. No leftovers. If money's an issue, spend wisely. Purchase "just add water only" mixes. Choose mixes or products such as the hash browns that have multiple servings and work out how much to use of each serving. I recommend dried refried beans (not at DT, but are at WM). Pancake mixes, powdered milk, powdered eggs and so on. 6 oz cans of meat: tuna, chicken, beef, pork, turkey- one can per person. Yes, more people means bigger cans, but if there are leftovers which can't be kept at 40 degrees F, then you've made too much and wasted it. Yes, ice chests are easy to use, but if there's no ice in the store you're out of luck. For everyone. Give yourself a challenge. Put yourself mentally in a situation (police and military call it mental training)- say for example, a major storm that's taken the power and water out for a week. You have a sterno stove or camping stove (if you don't have one, save and get one.) Obtain water for a week- figure a gallon a day per person, half a gallon for cats and small dogs and a gallon for large dogs per day. Make a menu- for each person, you need 21 meals not including snacks. Now in your challenge, you have no power, no refrigeration. (Millions of people around the world don't.) Calories are one thing, protein is paramount as is fat. It's not as easy as it sounds, but with practice, everyone can do it. Shop at more than one store. Dried fruits are available in stores- buy a little at a time. No, DT instant coffee isn't folgers or maxwell house, but it's caffeine. Pour over coffee from DT comes in flavors- that got me a "little touch of luxury" during that time. Cheap pancake mix makes pancakes that could be mistaken for crepes? Easy- 1/2 cup pancake mix, 1 tb each powdered egg and milk; add enough water to your desired consistency and you're set- nice fluffy pancakes. Ramen soup is a lifesaver. Writing too much- have fun with your challenge.
Thank you! You listed very valuable tips! Well said.
Those hashbrowns are a great buy. I suggest getting more. One box makes 5 servings. It makes A LOT after you rehydrate them.
We are going to get more hashbrowns and also the Goya beans!
@NormalPrepping Awesome!!!
Great video! I will be on the lookout for canned turkey now that I see you have found it at Dollar Tree. The emergency pie is an outstanding idea! I am wondering how it would taste if you add a spoonful of your DT peanut butter to your pie bowl? I find a lot of great deals on crackers at Dollar Tree. The ones around here carry an off-brand Ritz type in regular and a spicy flavor which is much better than I would have thought. They also carry the brand Greta, which are phenomenal. Most of their crackers come in smaller sealed multi-packs within the box, so they are easy to grab and go or put in an MRE. I find crackers to be a good substitute for potato chips as a crispy snack and a great addition to soup or a watery dish, which is easy to run into when you are making a lot of "just add water" meals. DT usually has shelf-stable pepperoni (same is sold often at Dollar General for $1), which is not the best pepperoni ever, but does add a little extra to any ready-to-eat meal. Stuffing is usually cheaper at the grocery store, but you can get it at DT, not as good to eat straight out of the box as other items you have shown, but awesome if you have hot water.
I’m with Belinda, coffee addict here 😂
I consider myself a pretty good prepper, but the "serious" preppers will com after you for the convenience food, YET, if an emergency hits quickly, you need to quick food, because you may have to deal with a lot all at once. Besides, if you have people (kids) with you who are not used to eating anything but canned pasta, you need to put them at ease. People can survive on almost anything, but why? My Dollar Tree pickups include the herring tins as they have a lot of protein. You can find some rare foods so grab them; they may not come back. I have not seen canned turkey there, but I have found seasoned Hereford beef in aseptic pouches. My husband argued with me, and I only got a few. When he saw the price of them in a supermarket out of town, he kicked himself. They are no more, nor are the nut and seed mini bars that another channel kept talking about. I bought a lot,(I've eaten a lot!), but pulled some out after two years and they are still good. A real punch. I wish I had gotten more before they disappeared again. I picked up tall cans of sausages. I have no idea how good they are and only got a few.I have not opened them but surely, someone will like them. I have found the bigger cans of Vienna Sausage bites, and laid in them. I happen to like Vienna sausages. I had chicken ones with me while I was at hospice with my brother and although they fed me well, I needed the extra protein boost. The chicken and tuna salad kits are also in my bag, as I probably told the story of getting stuck with my sister overnight in a hospital with him without my car and my usual supplies. NEVER AGAIN. It does not have to be WWIII to be a real emergency. Good job!
Thanks! You are correct it does not have to be WWIII to be and emergency. That is why we call ourselves Normal Prepping. However if a person is prepared for a basic emergency they are better off if the zombie apocalypse comes along. We were surprised at what we found at Dollar Tree. However as you pointed out, shopping there is like shopping at a garage sale. You have to buy it when we see it. We have already gone back to buy items we found when doing our video on other prepping items we found at Dollar Tree. I am thinking we may also go back and get more chicken and the GOYA beans! I might look for the Vienna sausage too. I don't think I have had those since I was a kid. Thanks again.
@@NormalPrepping Vienna sausages are generally cheaper at grocery stores, but the big can of "Bites" are a good buy at DT. I always had extra and have seen us through water and power outages, bad weather, layoffs, unexpected expenses, unexpected guests, family suddenly moving in, illness and injuries, car trouble, you name it. At the pandemic, I didn't like what I was seeing in that stores, and looked into things more; there is nothing for us in reserve, (and I was vindicated over the floods in North Carolina). I started prepping in earnest. (We were in quarantine at one point and then were ill and between us and family/ friends, we took care of a number of folk. I have always sent food with those who come in family or others, who were in need. If or when it gets really bad, we will see, but so far, I have been feeling goos,(giving up a lot of room and doing it will DT and sales.)
I personally like to use the portable power stations and generator combo. I just use the generator when charging the power station and then swap all power back over to the power station after 100% charged. It saves a lot of gas. If you have a big enough power station you just need the generator a few hours every second or third day for a few hours. Plus you can charge the power stations with solar.
A better choice for candles is the tall votive or prayer candles. They will burn for over 50 hours. I enjoyed the way you took items out of the sack one at a time to increase suspense.
Water saving ideas: Practice these ideas ahead of time to see how they work for you. Put three squirts of hand soap into an old shampoo bottle and fill the rest with water. This saves one step when washing hands/etc, because you don't have to wet your hands/etc first. Just pour a bit of the soapy water on, lather, and then rinse with clean water. I can take a nice shower with 3 shampoo bottles of water. The first with soapy water to wet & lather my body, the next two bottles with clean water for the rinse-off. I usually have some left over in the soapy bottle and sometimes only need one rinse bottle. For washing dishes, get the dishes as free of debris as possible before starting. Put a teaspoon of dish soap (like dawn) into a spray bottle. Add 3 drops bleach. Fill with water. Spray dirty dishes with this mixture before they dry. If they're dry, let the spray mixture sit a couple minutes and then re-spray. Give The dishes a good rub with a dish brush or rag. The dishes can then be rinsed and wiped dry. (My Gran always said, "the person drying does half the work." What she meant was that rubbing the dishes dry is an important step in being sure they;the super-clean & ready to be immediately stored in a dust-free spot.) Before disaster, experiment with "airing out" clothes. This works better for some people than others. Unless there are visible stains on an outfit after wearing, hang it up on a hook or hanger & leave it out in the open air of the room. Some people can re-use these clothes after they've had 12-36 hours of airing out. Some people can use the same outfits up to 4-10 times before washing. For some people it doesn't work for at all, and clothes need washed with each use. The most water-saving toilet option (besides an outhouse) is a composting toilet. The idea is to try to always keep pee and poop in separate containers, because the wet combo is what causes the worst odors. Some folks have "urine diverting" bucket inserts that funnel urine into a gallon sized container for easy dumping. This is good, because the urine drain can be plugged or covered when not in use to trap the urine smell in the container. In the poop portion of composting toilet, try to dry the poop out as quickly as possible; Some people use a base of dry mulch, coconut husk, wood shavings, etc... add a bit in the bottom of the container before first use & then add a thin layer after every use. This absorbs moisture & eliminates smells. The best compost base is pine horse bedding (pellets): a big bag costs $4 at the feed store & it smells good. The poop container can be dumped weekly or when full... you'll be surprised how little it smells if kept dry. One family of six I've seen on TH-cam only dunp their poop container once a month. It can't be safely used as compost for food crops unless it goes through certain heat stages, though, so never use the dumpings near a garden
Excellent suggestions! Thanks
Love the outtakes at the end 😂
Belinda didn't know I did that 😁
Even if you THINK it might get bad, fuel up and water up and have a PLAN!
Enjoying the video. However, some things you don't really have to pay for. Every 6 months when i go to the dentist I get a new brush and tooth paste and floss. Just put that away. I like the light that it's adjustable I've never seen that. I've bought a few from Harbor Freight and they are good but really no way to adjust other then closing them a little. The pullup to turn on.
You can use your water key on any building with a sprinkler system. Every system has a drain somewhere on the building
Love fire cider, I sent this video to Maddi so she can make it while she’s at school 🙏
That is awsome!
I love this 🙏 also, 2:12 so funny!!
I have a Dollar tree here where I live but they don't have near the things that you guys found I'll say something to them maybe they'll get some of them in or their website maybe
Have a think about your computer email and bank accounts. Use a password manager that way you only have to remember the master password. Keep some cash, preferably in small denominations so you can pay close to a reasonable price if the shop has no change.
Prepping is expensive here, no dollar stores, here you pay premium for practically everything, this is why I build so many things.
Do you have any discount stores there, or are they all full price? We watch your videos and you are very creative. I just assumed you are frugal like most preppers.
@NormalPrepping We have Extra China, it's the cheapest place here, but not cheaper than a dollar store, but I do shop there for stuff like Extension cords, Zip ties and some electrical connectors for small wiring, I have bought a couple of prepping items there like the ones mentioned.
Are you in where??!
@margritpiepes8242 Puerto Rico 🇵🇷, we have a Extra China store that sells cheap, but not cheaper than stores in the mainland.
@ who knew?! I thought they would be everywhere . See that’s a market space I know you guys have Walmart . They have pretty good prices . Maybe you could open a Dollar store👍🏻👍🏻
I love Dollar Tree for preps. All you have to do is go in with an attitude of, "What should I have extra of?" and, "What could come in handy?" I'm afraid the feminine napkins and 'electrical' tape are of poor quality there. Superglue can be used for first aid. It seals cuts. Bigger packages of nitrile gloves should be in preps, as well as body wipes. Health products, and baby/body powder. Fuzzy socks, scarves, socks, parchment paper, and foods. I have not seen the alarms!
Thanks for the tips! Yes! They have surprisingly good merchandise. We were blown away by the alarms! Who would have thought Dollar Tree has alarms that work? We went back and bought more alarms along with the two different lights. We were surprised by how they good they work too.
@@NormalPrepping I hope I find them . I see a number of items on other channels but never find them in my local one, in several that I visit when in neighboring cities. Thanks.
Get a couple 30 inch bow saws and a dozen extra blades. It's lighter, runs on corn beef hash, and when things go wrong they go wrong A LOT more slowly than with power tools. Even folks who don't use tools very often can figure out how to run them safely. They're also a helluvalot cheaper than a chainsaw, and if you pinch the blade in the cut you can leave the blade behind and put on a new one if need be. Throw in a boys axe like a Cold Steel trail boss and you're set for under $100, including the extra blades. Additionally, if you have a couple extra saw frames in the shed you can pass them out to the neighbors. Many hands make light work.
Thanks for the tips!
Can't GMRS radios talk to the family radios?
Yes, they do share some of the same frequencies. I didn't mention that because I was trying to keep it simple.
Boring
I bought a baofeng ham radio now but I don't know what to do with it. I would love to see a a video on it. Glad to find your Channel.
I would like you to get on the air right away and not have to wait for me to do a video on it. I recommend watching this video to show you how to program your Baofeng using CHIRP: th-cam.com/video/7XQNmWS4A9o/w-d-xo.html Just program what you need, for instance if you only use FRS radio then do a search for those frequencies and same goes for GMRS and above do that. I have videos on what those acronym's mean in my playlist. A pro tip: make sure you push the cable hard when you plug it into the radio. It should click. Thanks and good luck!
Great Idea. And had me cracking up at the end when you kept laughing. Its contagious
Thank You! We had a great time doing that video.
I need a teacher like you!
Thank you so much. I put Lifesavers & hard candy butterscotch so good. You are so truly thoughtful what a brilliant idea
Thank You!
Greeshow is a portable water purifier that outdoor enthusiasts deserve
I prefer to use a sock.
lol
You dig a hole or latrine it's what you do. You never poop in plastic it will not break down
Did all you bears get that ????
Thank God I wasn't as bad off as some people during Helene but I did lose power for 3 days. You are right about solar, I had battery powered lights, fans, etc but wound up running around trying to find stores that still had batteries in stock. You go thru batteries so fast. Afterwards I bought a power bank, solar panels, solar charging lights, etc. Hopefully we won't lose power again that long but if we do, we will be ready.
Generator and solar panels complete the trio.
5 gallon bucket and a walmart bag or just dig a hole and cover it up when you're done
What happens when you run out of 'wag bags'?
Use a shopping bag, garbage bag, bread bag etc. and add some kitty litter or sawdust.
A shovel and a cat hole work just fine. No need to buy other stuff.
If your home experiences a power failure, the toilet will still work. But if your water is cut off, then the wag bag and portable toilet will be useful.
Bit confused..... Can you do another Vid as the pants and shirt seemed to get in the way in your demonstration, I did not see anything actually go into the bag, lol
Preserving our poop for future archaeologist.
And for pack thieves lol.
How long do you leave the canned food in there cuz they have dates on them? I think you should can your own food cuz you're shelf life is longer when you do your own canning
We can and also buy canned food for long term storage. We really don't worry that much about the date on canned food. If we open it and it looks or smells bad we will not use it. We have yet to open a can of food that is bad and we have seen many people talk and demonstrate how much longer canned food lasts past the marked date. However we do rotate our long term storage. Just do what makes you feel comfortable. Some people are more sensitive also and that will play a big part in how long you store food.
Well done.
Thank You!
Does each kit come with a lovely Lady instructor !? where do I sign up ? !!! hubba hubba 🙂🙃🙂
Sooooo how will that fix my erectile dysfunction????
Animals ALL ANIMALS even you been pooping here there everywhere and nature loves it, your idea adds to garbage / landfills or the oceans, the only thing I am curious about is the name .... wag bag I'd love to see your dog use it lol
