    Its a 1/4 inch drill bit for tapping first and then use the 5/16-18 tap, which is standard. I'm planning on putting out a comprehensive, step by steop, vid for installation because after spending 500+ on this it is nerve racking and there arent really any comprehensive vids out there on this.. stay tuned. it really isn't that hard guys and despite a lot of other videos, not this one, everything doesn't need to be perfect like a lot of people do. there is SOME error. For example, the 1-1/4 hole that goes through the chop and leg. its really hard to get perfect, there is 1/8 inch play all the way around.

    Sadly, I wish someone would do more of these based on buying from a more traditional store. Rob has great videos, and if I could buy planes from him I would. But he makes a point that all the planes that come through his shop are flattened and sharpened and tuned. I wouldn't have a second thought buying from him, and maybe one day I will try one of his other tools since he can't ship to the USA with Planes (or it gets really complicated lol). I did enjoy the video.

    Sorry to hear all the issues you have had. I was having issues as well when setting up with only feeler gauges and no proper dial indicator. The dial indicator was unbelievably helpful for getting things finely, finely tuned and since then I haven’t had any issues, but it hasn’t been that long either. It sounds like yours was a dud. Really hoping mine continues to keep square and doesn’t have any issues in future.

    I just made a comment on an earlier video in which u asked for ideas on the apron. I mentioned the magnet idea and see you’d already implemented it. I like this design quite a bit. I’m sure they’re not cheap but it’ll last a lifetime.

    • @garynelles
      @garynelles 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would have to go back to my receipts to see how much it cost but I don’t think I have any more than about $75 into this apron. I think I spent about $150 on enough waxed canvas, webbing, length adjusters, etc., but that would be enough to make two aprons so I have a bunch of extra stuff left over. For me it wasn’t so much about the cost but about being able to get an apron that was specific for how I worked that would hold the tools that I own. Keep in mind it took a lot of hours to produce because it was a one off product that I’m probably never going to make again. It took a while to design all the individual pockets. The base apron itself was super fast, but it was the pockets that took all the time. Once again, thanks for watching one of my videos!

      @@garynelles ha ha absolutely 👍. Wasn’t intending to come across as some sort of expert esp design of an apron lol. I was just glad to see the magnet idea was thought of before (and probably a fairly common feature for all I know). I’m half way inspired to get some leather and the other parts but I’ll need more than a few instructional vids on sewing leather lol. But I’m sure if someone were to buy your exact apron as she made it, I think it would cost close to $900 (easily). The ones on that site before customizing are $650 I think.

    Not sure if any aprons have this or not but I was thinking of those wrist straps that have a magnet(s) in them for the random screw or other small parts. I do find those handy on occasion and it might be an interesting feature somewhere on the apron in addition to a few pockets. Obviously if you integrate a magnet or two, pretty small, flat would be better, but there are plenty of super strong magnets that are thin and small. I like the simplicity,look of the apron w/out too many pockets but a few would be handy for a pencil, maybe the comb sq. I love the look f the leather of your apron over the carhart type mtl. (Another thot regarding the magnet idea, I might want a few small loops as opposed to full pockets (or in addition to) the loops by themselves might be awkward for holding much but with the small magnet sewn into the fabric just above the loop may make it more functional. Anyway, great video. Cheers

    • @garynelles
      @garynelles 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My apron does have a small rectangular area of magnets on it. It allows me to put drill bits or screws readily at hand. Interestingly enough I have used the magnet area more for a very small engineers square more than anything else

    last year I did something comparable to you. I did some research and found many power tool manufactures who offer the helical cutter heads as an option to straight knife cutter heads are often knock offs from where ever, quality completely unchecked. This doesn’t stop at the cutter heads, take a closer look at the motors, bearings etc, rarely do you see quality motors like Baldor or Lessons on these machines. I found the list of manufactures includes Powermatic. These manufactures are squeezed for profits despite their commercials for high quality blah, blah, blah, they cut corners where they can, when they can. With the expectation the consumers will not notice and if they do notice they can convince the customer there is nothing wrong with their products. At the end of the day, they are hoping, or expecting the consumer will lower their expectations. The old adage of how do you boil a frog applies here (turn the heat up slowly). Back to my experience with my jointer replacement, last year I purchased a brand new Powermatic 8 inch straight knife jointer during the Powermatic 10% off sale to replace my Delta DJ-20, yeah, i know, more on this later. At the same time i ordered a Byrd shelix cutter head from Holbec (great guys). The jointer arrived about 5 days after i placed my order and the Byrd head arrived about 2 months later. I swapped out the heads and saved myself about $600 calibrated the jointer and carried on. Unlike you, I kept my DJ-20 until after my cutter head had been replaced and i was happy with the results, "trust no one", including my ability to swap a cutter head. The Powermatic upgrade makes it my third Byrd head in about 5 years, they make good stuff, you may have to pay a little extra but for me its, worth it. Unfortunately for me, i made a classic mistake, not even a year later i realize i should have purchased the 12 inch jointer instead of the 8 inch jointer for an 8 inch jointer. I suspect i have a do over in my near future with a 12 inch jointer. Now my motivation for replacing my DJ-20, once Delta stopped manufacturing the DJ-XXs raised concerns about a casting failure on my DJ-20, with Delta no longer providing replacement parts for many of their older machines i elected to reduce my exposure to a casting failure on the DJ-20 and swapped it for the Powermatic. BTW i had already gone thru the exercise of the replacing the head to a shelix on the DJ-20 about 4 years ago. If you are a DIYer, like most of us woodworkers are the head replacement is no brainer. There are so many videos out there on how to do this which really helps set you up for success, i really referenced the Wood Whisper video. Apologies for the long winded response

    Hi, Appreciated this build and the detailed description. Especially liked the threaded rod through the middle and the way the eye bolts very safely locked the top in place. Just wondering what the weights of the planer and sander are and how much they can differ before this concept doesn’t work so well?

    • @garynelles
      @garynelles 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I know the Dewalt 735 is about 90 lbs but offhand I don’t know about the sander. It’s fairly light. I would estimate less than 40 lbs. This design will work fine for any weight difference because when you are using one machine or the other all the weight is vertical. However, the top will be more challenging to flip the greater the weight difference is. I hope that helps.

    When dovetailing, I like to angle the board so the cut is always vertical. The Benchcrafted stuff is lovely, but it's quite expensive in the UK and I think the Veritas twin screw and tail vice will suit my needs better. I've had a twin screw for so long now, I'd hate to be without one. The Veritas chain vice will be a nice upgrade.

      I’ve known a few people with the Veritas twin screw chain drive vice and nobody has had good luck with it. I’m not super familiar with it but something inside always loosens off and then the two handles hit each other and you can’t properly tighten it with enough pressure either. Google some reviews about it before buying one. I would hate to see you regret it after the fact. I know my neighbour wishes he didn’t have it. Yes Benchcrafted vises are great. I love mine. They are likely a little less expensive for us here in North America but they are still pricey. I figured I would have and use it for 30 years so I just bought them. So far no regrets. Happy woodworking Mikey!

    I built my first real bench back in 2010. It's done very well for itself, but I never really finished it before putting it to use. It's a Holtzappfel, or a Roubo with twin screw and a knock down base. I used cheap 2x4s, and unfortunately the parts are starting to twist and pull themselves apart. I'm planning on building a decent replacement, using hardwoods and nicer vice hardware. I'm enjoying getting inspiration from this video series.

      Any bench is better than no bench at all. I love my Roubo. Definitely use hardwood for your next bench. You won’t regret it. Thank you for another comment…. Keep them coming!

      @@garynelles over in the UK, sycamore can be pretty affordable. I understand it's similar to soft American maple, so perfect for this kind of thing. The other alternative is using oak beams. They're also produced up here for architectural uses, so also reasonably cheap if you don't mind air dried to a higher moisture content.

    • @garynelles
      @garynelles 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would personally avoid air dried lumber for a bench if it’s greater than 2” thick but that’s just me. I would be concerned that it would still move around and my bench top may not stay flat all year long.

    My old workshop (read: shed) had a failed roof over the winter, which has caused the whole structure to succumb to damp. Until I can save up some pennies to tear it down and build a new one, I'll happily work wood vicariously through you! It's not the only reason I'm still watching, I appreciate your measured, methodical and precise approach. These are excellent comfy videos for weeknight viewing. 😊

    any thoughts on elongating the hole in the tenon in the lateral direction? I'm concerned with my chances of getting the hole perfectly aligned with the hole in the leg and the axis of the mortise.

    Gary, I never used a spokeshave either. What would use this flat bottom vs. a curved version of spokeshave? Thank you, Scott

    • @garynelles
      @garynelles 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s my understanding that the round bottom spokeshaves are intended to do inside curves, but it seems like most people just use a flat bottom one and have the blade protrude out the bottom more so that they can do an inside curve. I’ve used it a little bit more since releasing the video and they’re pretty easy to use. You get the feel of it very quickly. You should give it a try Scott. Thanks for watching. I appreciate it.

    Did you flatten you 1000-4000 and 8000 only once for that 1 hour sharpening session?

    • @garynelles
      @garynelles 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don’t recall exactly what I did in that video but currently when I sharpen my chisels I do 2 or 3 at a time. I start by flattening the water stones then I sharpen the widest one first and work towards sharpening the narrowest one last. The whole time I work the whole surface of the water stones to reduce the amount of dishing out that may occur. Although in an ideal world you want the edge straight, it doesn’t have to perfectly straight. They can be slightly imperfect and the chisel will still cut just fine so you can get away without constantly flattening the water stones for sharpening chisels. Plane irons on the other hand require the stones to be perfectly flat for top performance. Thanks for watching, I hope it helped!

    Measuring at the end of the calipers at the "knife" edge cuts into the shaving. Take a shaving and: 1. Cut it into four pieces. 2. Put the pieces together (alternate surfaces) and take a measurement, but not at the edge; use the wide part of the jaws. 3. Divide by four. I bet it is more than one-half of one thousand.

    • @garynelles
      @garynelles 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Although I see your point, I don’t necessarily agree 100% with you because the callipers still have a flat spot at the end that is 1/32 of an inch wide so it’s not a knife edge cutting in. It’s just simply less surface area between the jaws compared to deeper in the jaws so yes, it may be possible to compress the shaving somewhat. Regardless of whether or not, we agree or disagree I did what you said, and measured four layers to be 0.0025” so one shaving is 0.000625” thick. Your comment is highlighting a very good point that we need to be aware of the methods in which we test and report data. If we do multiples of something the error can compound or multiply several times over. Also, if we squeeze the callipers harder they will give us a smaller measurement. Thanks for your comment David. It helps keep all of us on our toes and thinking.
