Paris Brest Paris - Sleep deprivation, heat, people ... I almost didn't make it!
Paris Brest Paris, the most iconic randonneuring event in the world! Even has a dessert named after it, which is clearly the highest honor of all.
Please SUBSCRIBE and LIKE! I'd love for this video to get in front of more people
PBP is really about the people: 8000 participants from all over the worlds, thousands of volunteers from clubs in each of the control towns, and then the thousands of regular people along the route cheering, giving water and food at all hours of the day and night. You were never alone!
This was my second time doing it. I made it both times, and this year I felt stronger. My first time I got to the end, but I had bad saddle sores, numbness in my hands and fingers, pain in my back and legs. I was a mess! This year I felt good for really most of the ride ... except right before the end when I got a case of Sherman's neck that almost made me stop.
It was an incredible experience! I am glad that I did it and that I finished.
Took me a long time to put it together: I was almost done and my computer broke. I had backups of the videos, but not of my edit! I hope you enjoy this video, let me know in the comment!

Freezing in SoCal: Borrego Springs Brevet, from Beaches to the Desert
มุมมอง 2848 หลายเดือนก่อน
#randonneuring #borregosprings #brevet After lots of riding in NorCal, I decided to go south to explore new routes! Today we are riding the Borrego Springs 600km, organized by the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) randonneurs in SoCal. The route went through so many different landscapes: suburbs, beaches, river trails, deserts, and farms. It was a great way to explore all the things that SoCal had to...
Racing the Oregon Timber Trail 300: I almost made it!
มุมมอง 2.1K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
300 miles in the forest of Oregon, from the California Border to Oakridge. This was my first proper bikepacking race, far from civilization: just one resupply point in route, at miles 200. No cozy gas stations every 60 miles, this was really in the backcountry! I ended up scratching (DNF) because of time, but I ended up biking to Oakridge on my own, while doing most of the trails. See what happ...

400km in a day - SF to Hopland & back!

This is a classic San Francisco Randonneurs (SFR) ride, the Hopland 400k! The ride starts right by the Golden Gate Bridge, goes through Marin County into Occidental, then through Sonoma into Hopland. I met Vidas, Jeff, and Kaley, and we stayed together until the end! Overall the route was great, hilly on the outbound part, and more flat on the return via Sonoma. Discover the Hidden Gem: Biking on Ponale Road, Lake Garda
มุมมอง 173ปีที่แล้ว
#lakegarda #ponale #mtb The Ponale Road is one of the must-do rides near Lago di Garda in Italy. The road is an old abandoned military road that climbs on the cliffs near the lake, and has been transformed into a cycling and pedestrian trail. We did it last summer, and it was a pretty hot day! It was amazing to see how many people were out on the bike.

    Thanks for the video! How much water did you carry at the beginning of the race? I am planning to do the Grand Depart July 13th and am trying to figure out how much water I should carry (Thinking 6 Liters)

    • @randosquirrel
      @randosquirrel 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I had a 4 liters. That year riders had a spreadsheet with streams and springs for refill, and I relied on that. Streams were full that year, but I had trouble locating a few of the early springs and I had to skip those. I conserved water a couple of times, and the time I run out was because I skipped a planned refill as I mistakenly thought there was another stream a few miles down the road, but I had misread the sheet. Good luck with the grand depart!! It will be fun!

    Great effort. Thanks for the video. The race starts in 2 weeks and I'm considering it depending on conditions! 110degrees and hungry mosquitoes is NOT ideal conditions! When people think of the Pacific North West, all they think about is rain...but the dry summer season can be brutal and full of fires/drought.

      😂😂 yes. In many of these rides I do think "why am I doing this, exactly?" Sometimes the landscapes make it worth it and I forget the tiredness. Sometimes it's just the craziness of being around so many people doing the same crazy thing, and wanting to finish it.

    You had me with "I almost didn't make it" but you finish in 82hrs! I had same thought that i may not finish on time but for some reason I was 4 hrs early.. 😄.. My 2 buddies who supposed to finish in 82hrs waited for sunrise before crossing the finish line in 85hrs so they see more people at the finish line cheering to all finishers, a highlight to be reckoned with. Congrats to you for finishing strong. 7 months later, I can still remember the excitement, hardship, pain and fun of PBP.. see you in 2027. BTW, great video & im also in K group.. 🙂

    A friend of mine did that ride in 1993 or 94. His name was Sherman Phillips. I think he did it right around the same time you did. 82 hours. His buddy that went with him, Jeffrey, if I remember right did it in 58 hours! Madness! He tried to convince me to do the qualification rides with him, but I declined. It all sounded too tough for me. I think the neck condition is called Shermer's neck, after Michael Shermer, the skeptic magazine editor/RAAM rider. Congratulations for your hard work!

    • @randosquirrel
      @randosquirrel 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you!! 58 hours is fast! You have to be both fast on the bike and really committed to not losing any time at controls... I get too distracted lol. I heard the same about the neck condition. I was pretty surprised that it happened after just 3 days. More neck work for me to avoid this in the future.

    how was the open bike performing?

    • @randosquirrel
      @randosquirrel 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It has been great! it is a very good bike for these kinds of long-distance events. It's lightweight, comfortable, I could use 32mm tires that gave some plushiness to the ride without slowing down much. The geometry is still road-like, so you can get down on the drop (or aerobars) and save some energy from drag. I have been using this bike for gravel events too: I put on a redshift stem, and a set of 650 wheels with 48mm tires, and it can handle pretty rough terrain no problem.

      I rode with a good group that was doing the 300k version of the ride (finishing in Palm Springs), but after that I was alone! Looking back, during the whole way to Borrego Springs at night I was really underfueled, my mental capacity was a bit compromised 😅 The two rides I did in the desert with PCH randonneurs were both fun!
