Hello Brad ! As you know, I've experienced both, the doing it yourself, all along, and for a while, having the 'white glove' treatment. These are different worlds . Having lived both sides, always had a huge respect for the people taking care of everything, while you enjoy the pool at the hotel . People who've never experienced being a roadie, don't realize the amount of work and the commitment it takes, to do it flawlessly, so you can shine , when the time comes . Respect of the people you work with is part of the trade , some 'artists' never get it ! Take care !
All those years and that is how MA reacts? If Dugan has a family Im sure it has not been cake and bliss, not to mention lack of corporate retirement package. I wonder how generous a man not understanding his loyal employee's wish to retire at 70 will be? Anthony is getting long in the tooth as well. How many more Van Halens will come down the pike now that the industry has become a corporate poptart machine? My husbands response to Eddie Van Halen in the early days asking him to come to LA was a simple question. "Are they going to pay my benefits?" He was a smart man! I marvel at peoples choices in life. Every artist must have passion. But, he had a hell of a home studio, all the guitars he wanted, a young wife, family, nice home and security. How many of these cats in Nashville actually own anything other than their instruments? Rent forever. Some make it but the numbers are grim. MA sounds totally self absorbed. I hope he sets Dugan up well. The man has busted his tail for years. Babysitting tanked egos on the short bus alone should pay much more than he will get most likely.
"You're only 70 years old. You don't want to keep setting my shit up? Why?" Michael Anthony sounds like he doesn't have a lot of situational awareness and I agree with Rhonda.
How the hell do you know, or what makes you think Michael won't give him an excellent retirement package? He most likely negotiated that retirement package years ago.. I'm sure Dugan has flown on that Jet more times than he can count, and those buses aren't just Greyhound's. They are palaces on 6 wheels. When they're on tour, Dugan isn't staying at the Motel-6, he's staying at that same hotel Anthony is staying at... sheesh
@@CaptainRon1913 Did you watch the video? It's ridiculous that Dugan even had to explain to Michael Anthony why he wanted to retire at 70. Any f'n idiot would get that.
Good morning Brad, and congrats on 11k+ followers, i remember when you had under 100, look forward to you surpassing 1m in the coming year(s) , always stellar content , thank you!
I salute Kevin! 70 years old out on the road. Hopefully he has tucked a few dollars away over the years for this moment. Also the SHOW must GO ON. Big Wheels Keep on Turning.
Trying to think back over the 40 years or so of Michael Anthony and other than EVH I can't think of a single time anytime MA got any bad press or anyone saying anything bad about him.
1:20 That’s gotta be the story Hagar talks about in his book-when Eddie was all whacked-out and tried to kick the windows out of an airplane while it was in the air! He literally could have killed everyone on board.
I think guys like Anthony have been so rich and rockstar for so long that they forget the normal life of people they employ....maybe it would be better to become a rockstar at 40 than 22, so that you had time to live and struggle for growth.
@badbrad my family is in the business of professional boxing and I saw first hand how out of touch to reality guys like Holyfield were at the time....he didn't understand that you could not hire a staff for 7 dollars a hour to maintain your 30 million dollars estate.
Society in general needs to learn to respect wisdom, intelligence, moral fortitude, humility and skill. The era of the rockstar is probably over, but with the industry changes for independent music opportunities, the internet to get music out cheap, immediate and worldwide…. Perhaps the era of the graybeard has comith. We shall see. I was in a chat with a bunch of thirty something’s yesterday. They were saying a 46 year old was geriatric, old as eff, And washed up. I laughed at them and told them they were in for a rude awakening. Ten years is nothing, and I was old enough to be their father, but looked younger than they did because of their habits 😂
Michael Anthony should take a hint from his longtime roadie and get off the road himself. I've watch several clips of the recent Sammy tour and IMO it sounds rough and stiff, I don't like Aronoff's playing on the VH tunes. Sammy lost a lot of range. How far are you going to tune down? Sometimes it's best just to leave stuff alone.
Kevin has earned a well deserved retirement. Talking about legacy which is what Sammy’s and Michael’s focus is this is the perfect opportunity for Michael to guarantee Kevin has a smooth, lucrative retirement. Kevin should have 0 problems to worry about.
Well the sad truth is a lot of the crew level folks or the musicians for that matter don’t have an alternative…they have to keep working because they are unlikely to have a pension or much savings and Social security may not be enough to scrape by on! If Kevin does have enough I hope he can retire but as you say it’s a hard lifestyle. I have a friend who is a guitar tech, he is 61 and last I heard he was out on the road with Counting Crows so it’s not always easy to turn down the money and keep traveling.
As far as Eddie Flipping out, It happens to all of us.... he couldn't pass Gas after eating a Bean Burrito without lifelong Press, Hopefully the Roadie can enjoy the rest of his Life! Thanks Brad Z
I know guys older who worked in the woods, running saw and skidder. When they retire they just fade away. Hopefully he keeps plowing forward doing something he loves.
@greenman4508 It's the same with ag guys. Hard , dangerous work and some hang in there for decades. Cowboys too. The fade away is real and kinda sad. Seen it.
@ yah, part of why I started playing again, is my wrists don’t work like they used to. Moving round bails around, carrying 80 pound sacks, sharp pains and lack of movement are warning me. If I keep pretending I’m 28 and not almost 50, I won’t be able to do much for the next couple decades. I need to be outside and working, so I’m trying to adapt now so I can keep doing it. Suddenly music is the responsible thing to do, and using my back too much is foolish. 🤔
Hey Bad, I'd be interested in hearing a segment strictly about living on the tour bus...I know that would have to be tough. Like what were the rules (written and unwritten), where did you eat, how did you sleep, etc. How did you survive being packed in there? Thanks...love your content and perspectives.
I saw that on a concert on TH-cam the other day. I felt old. Lighters were much better. The amount of radiation, WiFi, and blue light poisoning made me forget a song was playing
Love Mikey, his vocals made VH not his bass. Mikey (and Sammy for that matter) look and play timeless. But doing this shit at 70? Traveling, hotels, time zone changes, late nights......hell no. I am talking about the performers here. Then consider the crew......only crap. I'm sure that Mikey pays his guy well.....but Father Time waits for no one.
Road dog work isn’t for the faint of heart, and at 70 after 40 plus years this cat earned his retirement. Thanks for covering this Brad
Yes indeed. Thanks for tuning in.
Enjoy your retirement, Kevin!
He's earned it for sure!

Very passionate reply and well said. I think Dugan probably made way more than any Nashville sideman probably ever but it is a very tough gig.
@badbrad sorry I got windy. 😂 At 70 and just retiring from the road, the sacrifices were many. Enough he should be big time compensated.

It's great Michael kept him for 43 years.
That is true!

This is not to slag MA. He's a good dude who probably hates to think about Dugan not being there....

maybe so....
Great memories. God bless him.
Indeed!!!

Yeah man. Hard to imagine someone not realizing how hard those guys work.

Only nobody becomes a rock star at 40

Jackson Browne.ldedicated a song to the hard work roadies perform in his song The Load Out .
I think that is one of the greatest songs of all time....
Great, now that’s in my head for three days 😂. I’m a big JB fan

It does happen.....Thanks Zeke.
Dugie is awesome. Great guy!
He is indeed.
Where’s my whispering Brad? 😉 Seriously, great show man. Keep up the good work.
Sometimes I get a rare moment to speak up...lol Thank you!
Thank you, Brad. Well, I think Mr. Dugan deserves retirement. Michael Anthony will just have to understand at some point.
Yes indeed!
At 70 he should get out and enjoy the rest of his life. Life is short.

b-rad G morning dude!
Dude! Good Morning!
I don’t know if crowds hold their phones out and point them in your face at these gigs still at 70 that must get on your tits!
I think that's a big part of the experience now
I saw that on a concert on TH-cam the other day. I felt old. Lighters were much better. The amount of radiation, WiFi, and blue light poisoning made me forget a song was playing

Time waits for no one and it won’t wait for me
I wonder which color M&M Micheal Anthony hated 😂
I have a friend who is a local union sound and light man. It's a very tough job. At some point, it's too much.
Very true!
You can't keep going forever all things must pass.
Very true!
Sounds like corporate nepotism lol. Hard to imagine being a roadie for 43 years, hope he gets to retire
Must be nice to be rich and famous eh?.....😊
I wish I knew...
@badbrad I hear you bro 😆
