Dutchman's Agates
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 22 พ.ย. 2021
Welcome to my channel!
My name is Martijn, and I was born and raised in the Netherlands.
I'm currently living in North America with my beautiful American wife Dawn,
where I enjoy going out looking and hopefully finding agates, jaspers, petrified wood and other fun rocks that might draw my attention in the future.
I mostly go looking out in Washington state and Oregon, but hope this journey will take me to other states, and even countries.
Join me on my adventures!
P.S. I have another channel called "Dutchman's Nursery" which is all about gardening.

มุมมอง 753หลายเดือนก่อน
Welcome to another video! I've been asked quite a bit what I do with my agates, so today I'd like to show you what I do with them! One day I'd like a vibratory tumbler, and a cabbing machine to face polish agates. Thank you for watching! Tot de volgende keer (Until next time) #Dutchmansagates #agates #rockhounding

Stunning Carnelian Agate in the River! | Washington River Rockhounding
มุมมอง 1K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Welcome to another video! Today I'm checking on the river as it's been a few months, and the water level has dropped a decent amount, it also didn't flow nearly as fast. I found several great pieces, with the cherry on top definitely being a good sized, stunning banded carnelian agate! Thank you for watching! Always love your videos!!! Thank you for always sharing with us. What do you do with all your agates? Do you think you would tumble any of these, and if so would you do a video about that?
Thank you so much, you're very welcome! I do have a video about what I do with my agates: th-cam.com/video/-9MklQpXOPA/w-d-xo.html I'd love to tumble some of them, that'd be a great video! Hopefully some day. 👍
I just found your Joyful Videos 😃 I Love your Enthusiasm, Excitement and Joy😃😁🥰 Do you have a shop? Have a Lovely Day Dear🌞 Happy hunting😍hope you find a shell🐚 for the Mrs. today❤
Aww thank you so much! I do get pretty excited haha. 😂 I've thought about opening a shop, I just need more tools. I'd like to turn some of them into necklaces, face polish others, cut open a few probably. You're not the first to ask, so maybe one day! Thank you for watching. 😄
Beaches are great. Fishing lures and line make it a landmine for pets walking along with their owners😮.
Oh yeah definitely, there sure is a lot in this area. When it's warm out there's a bunch of people here.
Gorgeous!
I watched a video about why it’s washing away.
That'd be interesting to know. Do share thy knowledge if you wish!
I’ve fallen in love with this stone as a relatively new hounder.. for some reason this one grabbed me the most!
I can see why, for me it's how there's many colors, types, banding/no banding and the combination of all these things. They're all unique and different.
Thanks for sharing Martijn! You inspired my wife and I to start rockhounding, we were out on the Oregon Coast at the Siletz River last night and found a few beautiful agates!
That is awesome, those first agates are especially exciting! The Oregon coast is a great place to find them, it's also just so beautiful out there. Keep on hounding!
Carry on and, please, continue to share. I'm 80 y o and need to rest after a rigorous youtube video !!!
Thank you for the lovely comment! Comments like yours definitely motivate me to keep making videos. I'm glad you enjoyed it and I'll see you in the next one!
Thanks for sharing your admirably organized collections. Seems that each piece has its own creation story as found without alteration except by mineral oil that reveals more of its story. Here in north central Texas we are limited to landscaping river rock and our native iron and limonite pigmented clays, sometimes fired. Still, each unique find has its own creation story, clarified by informed collectors like you. Thanks so much for sharing.
Thank you for your great comment! I couldn't have said it better myself. I love how every area has its own unique geography with its own treasures to be found.
thanks

Hello one rock how many doler can sell
I don't currently sell them, but thank you for your interest!
1230 is definitely carnelian agate needs tumbled
Yeah I think so too. It's pretty uncommon for them to be opaque like that here
That one around 9:00 minutes in that you said had quartz pocket pretty sure was agate. Just needed tumbling
Way to go! Beautiful find!
Thank you!
How much are these things worth ? and don't say it depends ... please give a price range
You say don't say it depends but it depends incredibly on the individual agate. It varies from 1-5 dollars per pound for basic chalcedony/carnelian with no banding to up to 1000 dollars per pound for an insanely banded, high quality agate. Location where it was found also plays a massive role, like a Lake Superior Agate or the very rare Fairburn Agates. Color is also a factor - some colors are more rare than others. Then there's also a subjective value to it - one collector might be willing to pay far more than another. I can't imagine the ones I find are worth much, which is completely fine since I have no intention on selling them, that's not my goal of these videos.
@@DutchmansAgates Thanks so much for the reply. You are the only agate channel which answered my question ... so you get a sub :)
Where is this ?
Why do you call it a water line. It's banding in agate, with some of it being non-precious opal. Read about geology and agates so you can learn the real terms of what you see. BTW, getting the host rock out of the agate like you want will make it less valuable, but you do you.
Water line agate is a term used within the hobby. Look it up. This is a hobby, I'm always learning. However, I'm not a geologist, nor am I pretending to be one. These agates don't have any value worth talking about, I'm also not in it to sell them either. So if removing host rock so it reveals more of the chalcedony/agate, why not.
nephrite jade. maybe serpentine. its all over the columbia river area. the gemmy stuff is worth a fair bit....
Those were some good finds. Do you plan to tumble them ?
Some of them yes, I am pretty picky about what I'd tumble. Like the find of the day I wouldn't tumble. It'd lose too much of its character in my opinion.
Yes. If a person wants to find rocks, they should just start looking!
Wow! So much fun!
I like the banded chert at 34:14 and the carnelian.
I absolutely love looking for rocks. Most people don’t have the patience.
It's relaxing also and takes you to beautiful places to top it off.

Hello Dutchman, my husband & I are curious as to what you do with the treasures you find. In best regards, T&T from Tennessee.
Hey there Tish & hubby, currently I clean them, give them an acid bath if needed (citric acid and/or Iron Out), rub them in some mineral oil and then display them in glass jars infront of a window. Once I have a cabbing machine I'd like to face polish some of them, and tumble others. All a work in progress!
Do you know what the white coating on a lot of agates is?
It's most likely opal, from what I read. It could also be opaque chalcedony, which makes sense to me.
@@DutchmansAgates I wish I knew how to get it off. I have found many agates that would be so much cooler if they weren't partially covered by it.
@@Rufferto12 It'd have to be ground off somehow, either through a tumbler or a cabbing machine would be my go to's.
All you need is like a zip lock baggie half filled with water. The sand would go to the bottom. Easy to use easy to put in trash when you’re done.
That's a good idea, thank you for sharing.
I havent been to the river in months, I need to make it back out while they're still low before the rains return (and flush more material into the banks and I go back and rockhound again xDD). Amazing finds!
Thank you! Yeah, I'd definitely get another trip in before the river gets too crazy. As I'm sure you know, it does get so high and more importantly; fast flowing.
Do you have a favorite in today's video? 🔥💎🔥
Very cool! Would love to see a video of what you do with the agates that you find. Polish or cut for pendants, etc.?
Sure, I can definitely do that. It's neither of those things though, I wish I had a cab king 'cause I'd like to face polish some of the agates I find.
What a day you had! I'd be stoked too!
You ever test the hardness of the stones
I haven't yet, when there's doubt I should, just to confirm.
Wow!!!!! So many beauties ♥️
I went there today. I a a total newbies. Very little gravel. I may have been in wrong place. I started at was the state park. Is there a better place to start?
If you look at Damon Point on Google Maps, you generally walk the bottom of the Point, not the top, if that helps at all. The gravel "travels", sometimes it's in one spot sometimes another. I usually walk the whole length of it finding where it's at today. It's quite a walk, between 2-3 miles to the end. Hopefully you have better luck next time!
I love going along watching you and the reactions to what you find!
Rock hounding is fun and better with dogs alongside.
Hey Ixd love to buy from u
Thank you for the interest. I'm not currently selling my agates yet, maybe in future as I get too big of a collection!
Do you just collect or have a store??? Do you live in Oregon or Washington State by chance my husband and I would like to meet you
Just collect currently, I've thought about opening a store once I get a saw and cab machine. I live in WA state. It'd be fun to do a meet and greet in the future sometime, if you see me on a beach somewhere feel free to come up and say hi!
Where in Wa
We live in the Port Townsend area
wow what a time there ... :) Here in Bulgaria is 40 degrees Celsius
This was a surprise storm honestly, but I love it. Our temperatures were pretty mild, thankfully. 40 degrees Celsius is no good!
Beautiful finds brother! Thanks for sharing your adventures!
Thank you for watching!
Wow, nice finds! What beach are on on? Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm and love for the natural world and, of course, agates.
Thank you, it's so much fun! The hobby takes you to beautiful places, a nice bonus for sure. This is Damon Point, by Ocean Shores.
Une très belle récolte, Bravo! Cela vaut la peine de braver le climat maussade.
Je suis d'accord, je pense que c'est du beau temps pour ça. Cela rend le tournage difficile!
I live in Oregon and am going to the coast next weekend. I love beach agate hunting!!!!!
Good luck and have fun!
I love agates, but poppy jasper has got to have my heart. I go down to Damon Point in Ocean Shores often, and if you catch the low tide and go all the way out where no one really goes you find some good finds. Lots of Jasper, a few agates mostly tiny ones(found a VERY good banded one once), and my favorite Poppy Jasper❤ A lot of stuff down in Washington but I plan on traveling to Oregon sometime.
I think it is
Whats it mean to hage bands? Is that good?
Yeah, the bands make it an agate, as opposed to it's base rock which is either chalcedony or carnelian.
I really want to vo rock hunting now. I miss it
Definitely, get out there if you're able! If not, people like us making these videos hopefully satisfy the rockhounding itch a little bit as well.
Are you being careful of the tide? Hate for you to get your feet wet :-) 3:45 and already 4 tide warnings... you must not have grown up on the ocean is all I can figure. Just bustin your chops though... all in good fun ;)
I always try to be careful and aware of where the tide's at. In that particular timestamp I'm not close to the ocean. I've always lived close to the ocean, pretty much anywhere in the Netherlands you're no more than 2 away from the coast. But you're right, I didn't grow up in a house with the beach right out the front door. How I wish.
“I wish I had some water..” 🤣 says the guy standing next to the ocean. ✌️😅
True!!! It was so faarrrr though, haha. 😂
@@DutchmansAgates 😂✌️ have a great weekends
